4.5 stars (4/10 hearts). This was my first read by Danielle Grandinetti, and I enjoyed it. The blizzard reminded me of
Little Town on the Prairie
and the plot kept me guessing. I liked the understated friends-to-more romance and the slight Christmas vibes, and I loved how Evangeline's kindness was celebrated. Despite its shortness this novella introduced me to many interesting characters and piqued my curiosity in the other books by this author—I look forwards to reading the rest of them!

The Robber and the Witness is part of The Christmas Cabin series, though it can be read as a standalone. It is the perfect novella with light Christmas vibes written by Danielle Grandinetti. This was a quick and easy read.
Evangeline is waiting for Gideon, her escort and brother’s best friend, to take her to Manitowish Waters. When her kind heart gets her into trouble, a man asks her to watch his bags and then disappears. When the sheriffs arrive and question people about a robbery, they discover that the bag belongs to the man who committed it. After things are sorted out, Evangeline and Gideon are on their way by train when a blizzard causes the train to stop. That is when things take a turn. With faith elements intertwined throughout the story, this made for the perfect read. Though a short read, this book had me hooked, and I cannot wait to read the next Danielle Grandinetti story.

This was a wonderful clean Christian romance that was perfect for reminding me all about the hope and peace that remembering and focusing on Christ’s birth can do! Forgiveness, courage, and charity were also highlighted in this little gem. The story was short and sweet, perfect for a quick evening read. I received an ARC copy and this is my review.

Poor Evangeline Whitaker! Back in 1931 in a train station in Minnesota, there was no loud speaker such as we have in airports nowadays blaring over the air. “Do not watch the bags of strangers!” Danielle Grandinetti’s female main character in The Robber and the Witness is just too kind for her own good. Her brother Evan says so. The fact that she is stuck literally holding the bag when two policemen come to investigate says so. The only one who doesn’t say so is Deputy Gideon Lundgren, Evangeline’s brother’s best friend and appointed guardian for a Christmas visit to Gideon’s friends’.
I loved the way Gideon smoothly assesses Evangeline’s situation and need and comes to her aid based on his knowledge of her past personality and his friendship with her brother. He is willing to give her the shadow of a doubt she needs in a sticky situation, and provides a great safety net for her. He provides confident leadership.
The train ride in the snowy Christmas atmosphere would have been magical if there weren’t the very real possibility of their being followed. Gideon is very good at assessing people, situations, taking charge, and giving commands to help protect not just Evangeline but the whole group of train passengers.
Evangeline is very brave, stoic, and willing to follow GIdeon’s lead. But…Is she naive, or is she just willing to see the best in people? When her soft heart rises up yet again… will it be the death of her and Gideon and maybe more?!

Gideon and Evangeline made for a very sweet reminder that childhood friends can easily become more. Evangeline is on her own for Christmas this year as her brother has to leave town for work. Not wanting her to be alone, he sends for their childhood friend, and Deputy of a nearby town, to collect her and keep watch over her.
Evangeline is filled with the sweetest nature. She is always willing to help people and be there for them. But when a stranger leaves his travelling sack next to her at the train station, she soon realizes again that her helpful ways always get her in trouble.
One of the central themes in this book was absolutely about how it's ok to be a good person, but also how being kind can at times put you in difficult situations. Just because others take advantage of that goodness from time to time, doesn't mean those that are kind are weak or naive. She truly loves to help others and ultimately that's how the entire issue gets solved as well. But I enjoyed her sweet nature and how she was always thinking about others before herself.
The budding romance between Gideon and Evangeline was quite enjoyable as well. They grew up together with Gideon and her brother being best friends. But they haven't seen one another in many years. This brings out all the feelings that both of them had from when they were younger and makes it even more intense. All the small hand holding and arms around shoulders make both of them realize their feelings for one another are stronger than either of them realized.
I enjoyed the mild suspense of the mystery in this one as well as the romantic elements. Plus I got to see some of my favorite characters from this series show up at the end, and that's always a wonderful treat!

A stranger approaches her with a request and she, as a kind person accepts. This act of goodness makes her become an involuntary witness and participant of a robbery. The Robber and the Witness is the fourth book in the "Christmas Cabin Historical Romance Novellas" series, in which each can be read as a stand alone. It is a perfect "Christmas in July" read!
This quick read will actually have you shivering from cold, as you follow Gideon, Evangeline, and the rest of the train passengers trek through falling snow and deep snow drifts across the Minnesota state line into Wisconsin. Brr!
I like the sweet camaraderie between Evangeline and Gideon, who have known each other from childhood and are meeting up now as adults. It's sweet how protective Gideon is of Eva, especially with potential danger lurking.
If you enjoy a sweet historical romance, with a touch of faith, be sure to pick up your own copy.

Say hello to one of your new favorite authors! I love this one. She writes amazing historical fiction novels that you don’t want to miss out on. I have not met a single character in her novels that I haven’t loved reading about or getting to know. Of course, I love to hate the villains. But even they are written well.
This is part of a series. The Christmas Cabin series, to be exact. Each book can be read as a stand-alone novel, but of course, I advocate reading them all as a series and in order.
Faith is woven throughout the story. I love books like that. They don’t have questionable issues. You don’t have to worry about what will pop up on the next page because nothing that requires censoring is going to pop up!
Now for the story.
Evangeline is being escorted by her brother’s best friend to Manitowish Waters. Gideon is charged with her safety as a bodyguard of sorts. But the plot moves along as some man asks her to watch his bags, bags that turn out to belong to a robber!
Evangeline had a crush on Gideon as a child. Gideon saw her as his best friend’s annoying little sister. Will their views change as they see each other as adults? When Evengeline is in danger, Gideon is there to keep her safe.
Loved the dynamics of the two of them. I don’t want to give away too much of the story, though. It’s a breath of fresh air and a cool breeze at that as you get some Christmas in July.

Her childhood friend (and her brother's friend) Gideon is only meant to be taking her back to his town for the Christmas season since her brother can't be with her, but things get complicated when a robber asks her to watch his bag while she's waiting at the railway station for Gideon's arrival. She would be able to identify him, and she now unwittingly has stolen goods in her possession. Add in a snow storm that's threatening to stop the trains, and it's not exactly the recipe for a wonderful Christmas. But Evangeline and Gideon are seeing each other again for the first time in years - could this be the opportunity they each separately hoped for to extend their friendship to more?
A relatively short but hope-filled Christmas read, though one I'd be happy to read any season of the year. I love Evangeline's readiness to be kind to anyone and everyone (yet without being completely naive). Her brother's desire to protect her is understandable but over the top, and I'm glad Gideon manages to balance protection and support of her caring attitude better. As much as I loved Evangeline and Gideon’s story, the pace of the book dragged for me, and not just because they were snowed in. I kept waiting for the plot to thicken, for the twist, the unexpected. But it never seemed to get there, at least for this reader.
Still, this was a sweet story, with likeable characters, and a happy enough ending.

This story had me shivering at the descriptions of the snowbound train and the icy trek to the next station while the snow blew in earnest. Gideon took responsibility to see Eva safely to her destination, try to discover who the robber was, and herd train passengers to a warm, dry place.
I appreciate the attention to detail and the atmosphere depicted in the story. Themes of trust, being guided by God, forgiveness, and justice were aptly shown. With a dose of danger and a sweet romance, this was an engaging, wintery story.

Another thrilling, historical fiction, Christmas novella, by Danielle Grandinetti. With Christmas drawing near, Gideon is just going to escort, his friend Evan’s sister, Evangeline, to the town where he lives, so that she doesn’t have to spend Christmas alone while Evan is away on business, but little do they know that a blizzard and a desperate man will plunge them into a fight for their lives. If you are reading this review then I highly recommend you read this book to see what happens next. You might just enjoy it as much as I did.

Her older brother had to travel without her, asked his friend (Gideon) to meet her and arrange for her to be taken care of over Christmas. His train was delayed and thus the rest of the reason for the story happened.

With just the right mixture of romance, suspense and faith, this story is about Evangeline, a young woman whose brother is headed off on a business trip while she is going to stay with strangers for Christmas. The good part for her is that her chaperone on the train trip is her childhood friend Gideon. Traveling in winter is never easy but when Evangeline does a good deed for a man in the train station, little does she know that she invited danger to follow her on the trip. With a raging snow storm, train tracks blocked by snow and innocent people to consider, Evangeline and Gideon try to protect others while drawing the danger to themselves. This is a fast-paced quick read with lots to love about it, especially the characters and their interactions. The plot is believable and immersive and drew me quickly into the adventure and the season of joy. Great Christmas in July (or Christmas anytime) read!

The Robber and The Witness by Danielle Grandinetti is the latest novella in her Christmas Cabin series. In this case, much of the action revolves around trains rather than the cabin. The cabin is the ultimate destination for Evangeline Whitaker, who will be spending Christmas away from her brother Evan for the first time. However, business takes Evan to New York, and he can’t bring Evangeline with him.
Evan feels confident that he can count on their childhood friend Gideon to keep her safe, and he certainly is able to do so. After all, he’s a deputy in Manitowish, WI, and he’s taking her to the sheriff’s and his wife’s cabin for a cozy Christmas. Things go sideways when Evangeline kindly says yes to a stranger who asks her to watch his bag while he uses the privy. This means she’s one of very few witnesses who saw this man…a man desperate enough to steal a logging company’s payroll.
I thought that this was a fun twist on the Christmas Cabin series. I’m one of those people who romanticize train journeys….like the sleeping quarters would be lush and comfortable. I’m sure the one I could afford would be much like second class traveling arrangements in the 1930s! That’s how Gideon and Evangeline are supposed to be getting to Manatowish. “Supposed to be” being the point. A huge snowstorm has hit the area, and though the robber doesn’t appear to have gotten on the train, they worry that he may find a way on regardless. From this point, there is a lot of action and Gideon faces the moral dilemma of choosing Evangeline’s safety or that of the many other passengers (including babies and young children).
As with Grandinetti’s other 1930s novels and novellas, I loved The Robber and The Witness. Her descriptions of battling blizzard-like conditions on foot made me feel that biting cold (while it’s currently 95 degrees F here!) and the sharp pain of ice-like snow blowing in my face. I’m not a fan… Of course, they find relief when they reach the cabin. What happens with the robber? You’ll have to read to find out! The next novella is going to be about Evan, Evangeline’s brother, and I can’t wait! I loved Evangeline and Gabriel’s happy ending! If you’re a fan of the genre, you’ll fly through this page-turning novella!

Sweet story
I loved this story as Eva's kindness gets her in trouble at Christmas. But she uses the opportunity to share the goodness in her heart. What Eva's brother always considered her greatest flaw is exactly what Gideon sees as her strength. And he's not about to allow her kind, caring heart to get her in trouble, not when he's finally back in her life.
Sweet easy Christmas read of first love, second chances, and true generosity of spirit.

This is a great novella! Gideon is a deputy, Evangeline is very kind which sometimes gets her into trouble. They are childhood friends. When a man asks Evangeline to watch his bag for him she agrees. Unbeknownst to her he is a thief and now she has the stolen money. Gideon helps Evangeline escape when they realize they are being followed. I loved this story! Gideon is very sweet and protective. Evangeline is strong and kind. Good Christian content. I reccommend!

The story takes place in a train station and on a train, ooo romantic, except there's a snow storm. The storm plus the possibility of the robber catching up keeps the suspense level up. But there is Christmas goodwill and cheer and of course romance in the end.

From the moment I began the book, I became completely engrossed. It follows the story of Evangeline, a young woman who is being escorted by her brother’s best friend. Through her unquestioning kindness, she places them in a tight situation when she agrees to watch the belongings of a man whom they later find out is a thief.
The romance is sweet, the story captivating, and Christmas joy shines clear and bright. The message deeply touched my heart. Even if things don’t go the way we expect them to, we should always be willing to help those in need.

I have to say, Danielle Grandinetti has become one of those authors whose books I genuinely look forward to reading. I will always read her new releases. Every time I pick up one of her stories, I know I’m in for a great mix of mystery, suspense, romance, and heart, and The Robber and the Witness was no exception. She has a way of transporting readers back in time.
The mystery kept me guessing, and every time I thought I had everything figured out, the story surprised me.
I really enjoyed the characters. Their relationship developed naturally, and I loved that the romance complemented the suspense instead of taking over the story. The historical setting was beautifully woven in and made everything feel so vivid.
One of my favorite things about Danielle Grandinetti’s books is how she creates just the right amount of tension while still giving you characters you can truly connect with. This story had me invested from start to finish, and I couldn’t wait to see how everything would come together.

I NEVER miss a new story from Danielle. She has quickly become one of my most favorite authors and I love her stories. One of my favorite series of hers is the Christmas Cabin series and the latest installment in that series is so so good. It has one of my favorite tropes which is older brother’s best friend and it was sweet seeing Evangeline and Gideon reunited at Christmas. I loved the added danger of the snowstorm and how Gideon protected Evangeline throughout the story. The premise with the payroll robbery set the story up nicely and the story had a few surprises as the story unfolded. Another fabulous read for me from a favorite!
