Gail Carriger's The Parasol Protectorate has a special place in my heart. I still remember walking into a bookstore and seeing the cover of Soulless. It stopped me in my tracks. I had no idea what I was getting myself into. I didn't know what steampunk was. I didn't know the term "comedy of manners," even though my mom had always loved stories like that. I wasn't familiar with all the Victorian customs and etiquette, but little by little, I fell in love with this world.
The science, the humor, the characters, the fashion, and the mystery all pulled me in. And what surprised me most was the thoughtful queer representation woven throughout the series. It never felt forced. It just felt like a natural part of this wonderfully strange world.
This is one of those series I always find myself coming back to. It has a grip on me that never really lets go. Reading the manga omnibus reminded me why I fell in love with these characters in the first place, and now I want to go back and collect all of the original mass market paperbacks.
If you've never picked up this series, do yourself a favor and give it a chance. You're in for a treat. Gail Carriger is a top-tier storyteller, and it shows on every page.

This graphic novel is an action-packed, loyal adaptation of the first three books of Carriger’s Soulless series. It’s funny, flirty, and somewhat suspenseful. The omnibus is a fun read for fans of the original historical paranormal romance, and it will also appeal to regular manga readers.

If you liked the original Soulless series, you’ll love this manga omnibus. If you haven’t read the books, dive right into this enjoyable omnibus!
Summary: this manga is an adaptation of the first three books in the Soulless series by Gail Carriger (the original series has 5 books but the last 2 were never adapted). It’s a steampunk story set in Victorian England. The book follows the story of Alexia, who is a preternatural and has the ability to turn vampires and werewolves human when she touches them. She’s good friends with a vampire and catches the eye of the alpha of the local werewolf pack. The stories follow her adventures as she has to solve scientific and supernatural mysteries.
First off, the story is hilarious and enjoyable with a fun cast of characters that develops into a found family around Alexia. This book is also very queer. While Alexia is in a hetero relationship, there are many gay and lesbian characters throughout the book, which just adds to the joy.
The art itself is lovely. It’s mostly done in black and white with a few pages at the beginning of each novel’s adaptation done in color. The action is easy to follow across the pages and each character has a distinct design, helping to tell them apart. I also enjoy the little drawings and comments that sometimes appear in to corners of a panel to show what a character is thinking on the inside.
The manga is a pretty faithful adaptation of the written books. There are a few minor scenes which were edited out or glossed over but that just leaves the manga to focus on the most important bits of the story. I feel like the manga really captured the essence of Soulless while also enhancing it with visuals.
I do wish the last two books in the series were adapted, as the omnibus ends kind of in the middle of Alexia’s story. Thankfully, one can read the books to learn more about the capabilities of the mysterious soul-stealer mentioned at the end of omnibus.

This omnibus collects the three manga adaptations of the Parasol Protectorate, the delightful steampunk paranormal romance series by Gail Carriger. Each manga volume covers a complete book in the series, Soulless, Changeless, and Blameless. The last two books don’t have manga adaptations, so the story doesn’t finish here. The original manga volumes are out of print, so this is the only way to get to read them, and I understand it’s a limited, print only edition.
I’ve read the entire Parasol Protectorate series, but it’s been closer to twenty years and the story wasn’t entirely fresh in my mind. Set in alt-Victorian London that has vampires and werewolves with a unique magical system, it follows Alexia Tarabotti who is preternatural. She’s a unique individual in the world of supernaturals who can counter them and make them mortal again. She’s feared by supernaturals and hunted by humans who want to make her into a weapon. And of course, there’s a romance with a cranky werewolf.
The adaptation did the main story justice, and it’s fast-paced and exciting. It has necessarily left out some things, the little whimsies that make the series so likeable. It wasn’t completely without though, and what it lacked it more than made up in the art. It was delightful to see the characters and the world to come alive. For a romance with some bedroom scenes, this was fairly clean.
The art took some liberties too, mostly in outfits and in Alexia’s decency. Poor woman practically poured out of her corset. I wasn’t entirely happy with how Conall was drawn, I wanted him burlier, but I absolutely loved Lord Akeldama. There are also several colour pages and character portraits, as well as short extras at the end of each volume. All in all, I’d say this is an excellent addition to the wonderful world of Parasol Protectorate. I wish the last two volumes were adapted too, to make it complete, and that it was available as an ebook too.

This is a fun graphical interpretation of the first three books in the Parasol Protectorate series. Those who enjoyed the series will likely have a good time with this manga-type adaptation - it stays pretty true to the series. Those who haven't read the books may get lost at times but the story isn't overly complex so it shouldn't be too problematic.Story: Alexia Terabotti is called a soulless - one touch and she turns werewolves and vampires into mortals/ghosts are exorcised. It makes her a rare oddity that 1880s London just doesn't know what do about. When she is randomly attacked at a party by a crazed vampire, she is suddenly drawn fully into England's paranormal underworld. But Alexia is no simpering miss - let the werewolves and vampires beware!
So yes, this is a fun romp with amusing plays on manners and Victorian society. It never takes itself too seriously and is an enjoyable steampunkish type of story. There is mystery, lots of spicy romance, and amusing characters/situations. Alexia is the droll observer to the zaniness around her.
The artwork has all the manga conventions - with a lot of exaggerated expressions and over-the-top paneling. It is very pretty - though I wish there had been more of an effort to draw the costumes/hair historically appropriate rather than as the Victorian caricatures we see so much in Japanese manga. It does make the story seem a bit young, though of course this is an adult novel. But otherwise, it's hard to go wrong here.
In all, I did enjoy this omnibus - this is thick with a lot of content and should be especially fun for fans of the series. Reviewed from an advance reader copy provided by the publisher.

What a lovely manga! I already adored the fiction books, but this was just the icing on the cake. There were many humorous panes that made me appreciate the translation that much more. I only wanted a few more color pages and the next omnibus.

Delightful. It was fun and an excellent read inbetween books. There were some inconsistencies in plot points but it was overall a fun time. Thinking about reading the series its based on.

3.5-had a good time but structurally some things didn’t make sense. Not the books fault but I also took a long break from reading it so no longer feel the draw

Beautiful Lady Alexia Tarabotti finds herself continuously under attack and in need of saving from the handsome werewolf alpha and head of the supernatural agency, Captain Conall Maccon. Alexia weaves herself in and out of trouble while investigating other supernatural creatures, including vampires, determined to figure out why everyone is so fascinated with her. This series has lots of witty banter, charming characters, and plenty of romance. Some nudity as werewolves shape shift and suggested nudity throughout. Readers who enjoy paranormal romance and vampire romps with comedic timing may appreciate this as well.
