A lesbian romance with a psychic twist about finding the confidence to believe in yourself.
At fifty, Brooklyn thought her dating days were behind her. After a disastrous divorce and a string of confidence-crushing rejections, she's perfectly content with her successful business.
But when her well-meaning friends drag her to a gypsy fair for her birthday, everything changes. One tarot reading and one mysterious cup of tea later, Brooklyn's routine Excel seminar in Christchurch becomes anything but routine.
Something's different. The way women are looking at her, the things she's suddenly aware of that she never noticed before.
For the first time in years, Brooklyn starts to realise she might not be as invisible as she thought.
In 2016, Donna Jay published her first sapphic romance. Since then, she has published eighteen more books, three of which made the number one spot in lesbian fiction.
Her stories feature resilient women, thought-provoking storylines, have plenty of heat, and are all set against the stunning backdrop of her home country, New Zealand.
She also writes sweet romances under the name Diana Jayne.
When she’s not writing, Donna can be found with her nose stuck in a book, or her backside glued to the sofa, binge-watching post-apocalyptic movies.
I’m not usually one for supernatural stories but this one was cute and interesting.
Which one of us hasn’t wanted to be able to read minds? To have a potion to make that happen is what gets this story started. To an extent, it helps the character connect with another.
It’s a funny, entertaining read with some hot love scenes as well.
Absolutely five stars! This novella completely captured me with its creativity, humor and just the right amount of steam.
What made this such a fun read began when Brooklyn’s friends booked a reading for her at the Gypsy Fair. The card she drew signified transformation and rebirth. She was told that, “Endings, in life, not death, are necessary for growth.”
Suddenly Brooklyn was hearing what others were saying in their minds, things that were directed at her. A lot of outcomes could result from this and she didn’t necessarily like them all. At a conference where she was teaching Excel software to a group of people from all over New Zealand, the thoughts were streaming, some being very inappropriate, some arousing and others that she shouldn’t be hearing.
Emboldened by the security of thoughts from what she was hearing gave Brooklyn confidence to enjoy her time at the conference. This is a definite must-read if you want to find out how she found growth through her experience.
Thank you, Donna, for the arc. Reading this was such a pleasure!
This is both cute and sexy. It combines several themes that could be overdone, but they're not. Lots of teasing and flirting, followed by an intense session with some gentle bondage. Several aspects could have been explored further in a longer book, but there are enough details to become charmed by the characters.
This could be the start of a series ... or a one-night stand.
well i actually forgot i was reading a novella.... i was pulled into the storyline early on and i was kept there right to the end....
we first meet brooklyn at a fair where her friends have treated her to seeing a gypsy to tell her fortune... she isnt keen after all at her age why should she believe anything now.... and after drinking the tea she was given by the gypsy she thought no more of it...
but its whilst she is giving her demonstration of excel that things start to go awry. and the fun begins in more ways than one....
i read this book in one sitting i was totally hooked... i need to go and see this gypsy and have some tea .... what a gift...
A quick and fast paced novella that takes place in New Zealand. It is always fun for me to read books centered in far flung places and this book does not disappoint. Older woman/ younger woman trope that is done very well. A bit of paranormal spice makes the story pop with unexpected laughs and undercurrents. Nicely written characters that feel real and could be your co-workers one day. The story moves seamlessly from one scene to another and has the right amount of loving to satisfy everyone. I enjoyed the read. Donna Jay is a fun writer.
OMG I don't think I'm ever going to be able to look at an Excel spreadsheet the same way again.....!
Sometimes everyone needs a little push out of their comfort zone. In the case of fifty-year-old, Brooklyn, her comfort zone is running her successful business and not even contemplating the idea of dating, not after her disastrous divorce. However, her world is turned upside down when her friends force her to have a tarot reading done at a local gypsy fair.
Unspoken Desires is a quick, spicy read with a non-traditional ending that will have you chuckling from start to finish. I really enjoyed this read an am grateful to the author for providing me with an ARC copy of the book. I am leaving this review voluntatrily.
There are so many reasons why I love this story! The first of which is—it’s just fun to read! I lost myself in the characters, settings, and story line. It’s light-hearted fun, and it was just what I needed at this moment in time. Nope, no spoilers here.
Her characters are delightful. Her dialogue and narrative are well balanced, oh, and be ready to laugh until you cry. I did. I just love how this made me feel—happy doesn’t cover it. It’s like after a big holiday meal and you’re full but still want dessert. No worries, she brings the spice as well.
I guarantee this is going to be on my “re-read” list forever. This will make a perfect early Christmas present for my friends too! Just Brilliant! Just sayin’.
I was able to read this early as an ARC and I just devoured it! Donna Jay just has a way of writing that sucks you in with the characters and the world building.
Brooklyn was so relatable in a way that just made every situation so entertaining! I was rooting for her through every new adventure or mischief from the fair at the start to the very end. I literally have gone through a situation similar (ish) -you’ll see (spoilers) this was so beautifully written and had humor and spice to match!
Loved it!

Brooklyn's friends pay to have her fortune read, which she is not thrilled with. The Gypsy woman tells her change is coming, and when Brooklyn complains she can't read people, she offers her a special tea to help.
Brooklyn heads to a conference a few days later.... and finds herself reading the somewhat explicit thoughts of anyone who's interested in her. The tea worked!
The only problem is it's a group lecture and a lot of the students find her hot. As does the organizer. Who sadly is not her type.
Ivy, on the other hand, thinks Brooklyn is hot and would happily do her. Which she picks up on in detail.
Good, erotic short. I kinda felt a bit bad for Irene, even if she's a bit of a a**hole.
ARC Review - Thank you to the author for providing me with a free copy of the book to read and review.
This was such a fun short read, I devoured it in one sitting! I loved the tropes and the idea of hearing when someone else likes you and how it played out throughout the story! It was very well written and the spice was spicy!
I almost wished this book was longer but I think it had a good, strong ending that felt true to the characters.
Donna Jay usually puts a little humor in her stories…but I laughed more in this story than any of her others! Brooklyn’s journey begins when her friends take her to see a gypsy on her fiftieth birthday to have her fortune told. This is a hard book to review and I don’t want to drop any spoilers, so y’all need to read this! I absolutely love this book and I know you will too!
What a fun story! I felt lucky to be one of the arc readers & really enjoyed this one. With equal amounts of interesting characters, a quirky twist, some wicked hot & steamy bits & little titbits about New Zealand it makes for a great read. Well written and hard to put down meant I finished in one sitting. Definitely recommended.
Overall this was a good, quick read! I enjoy when a book starts off with a little bit of humor. This also didn’t have the traditional ending where the characters live happily ever after. I enjoyed the mind reading aspect when typically I stay away from magic/fairy tale style books. It was nice having an older character (Brooklyn 50) to fall in love with!
Honestly- I'm never disappointed in Jay's books. She's yet again given me a reread to enjoy again and again. Brooklyn was one of a kind and her story had everything I want- Humor, steam, a bit of thrill and air of mystery, it was hard to see it end so I'm only complaining it was so short when I wanted so much more.
I was one of the arc readers for this book and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It's a quick read with laughs and spice. I devoured it in a couple of hours. I won't give any details but it's a must read ❤️🔥
This is a great short read book. The story of Brooklyn and Ivy is well written, with great main and secondary characters. Ms Jay always gives great descriptions of places in New Zealand. Well worth the read.
As always, I loved this book by Donna Jay. She never disappoints. It was full of humour, little tidbits about NZ, and of course the steam this author does so well. I want more of these characters and seriously hope to see them again!
This short story is a tale of believing in yourself at an older age. But you can put it on every age. It's a lovely story with Quirky Characters lots a inuendo and humor.
A gorgeous little novella. All feel good. Like most Donna Jay novels I love the New Zealand setting. Having a 50y old lesbian as MC is also a major plus. Loved it.
Loved the characters of Brooklyn and Ivy. Gypsy was awesome. The whole Irene thing will have you laughing. If you want a cute short story give this one a try.
Funny, fresh, and a quick read. A very entertaining and hot novella with a beautiful message. Going to a Gipsy Fair will always remind me of this possibility. Maybe I should go to a reading sometime 🤔 Although, maybe not 😆 It's not the traditional HEA, but it had such a beautiful and positive ending that I considered it one. In any case, Excel is far more interesting than I thought, at least when Brooklyn teaches it. Thanks so much to Donna Jay for the ARC. I would love to meet Brooklyn again!
I loved this novella from the start! Donna Jay has a way of writing sexy but funny romances that have a depth to them that leaves you wanting more, which this novella did. Excel sheets to bed sheets, a gypsy fair and some interesting and sexy thoughts all wrapped up with great characters, a must read. Thanks Donna Jay for the ARC.
This was such a lovely quick lighthearted read. It had everything I have come to expect form Donna Jay but less intense and with far more humour injected into it. I am not usually a fan of novellas but this was just perfect, it was as long as it needed to be to explore Brooklyns insecurities and her climb out of her own head to eventually gain the confidence to believe she could be desired by someone else after her failed marriage.
