절창

그런 그의 신작 장편소설 『절창』은 누구보다 드넓은 문학적 영토를 지닌 구병모의 그 어떤 작품을 좋아하는 독자라도 만족시킬 만한 작품이라 할 만하다. 제목인 ‘절창切創’은 ‘베인 상처’라는 뜻으로, 상처에 접촉하는 것으로 상대의 마음을 읽는 한 여성의 이야기를 담고 있다. 언어로 쉽사리 정의 내릴 수 없는 기이한 사랑 이야기이기도 한 이 소설은 오독을 전제하지 않고는 읽을 수 없는 타인이라는 영원한 텍스트를 독해하고자 하는 행위, 그리고 그 행위의 가능성과 불가능성에 대한 깊은 성찰로 나아간다.

Gu Byeong-mo is a South Korean writer. She made her literary debut in 2009 when her novel Wizard Bakery won the 2nd Changbi Prize for Young Adult Fiction. Her 2015 short story collection Geugeosi namaneun anigireul received the Today's Writer Award and Hwang Sun-won New Writers' Award.

🗡️I understand why this book is so widely talked about!🗡️

From the start, this book pulls readers in with its shocking opening and a striking supernatural ability. Not to mention the intensely ambiguous relationship between Owen and the girl that feels like a constant tug-of-war! The fast shifts in point of view are intriguing, and the central imagery of cuts and wounds are memorable.

That said, the story ultimately didn’t fully convince me. While the rapid succession of events keeps the tension high, it also leaves very little space to reflect as a reader. The novel sometimes felt like a series of sharp turns without any weight. I felt like there was a big distance between me and the story, that sometimes I could not relate with what was happening.

책속에서 책을 이야기하고 읽기와 이해하기를 설명하고. 독자와 작가를 설명해주는 책. 관계와 상처. 이해와 오해 사이의 한끝 차이. 많은 비유와 은유가 넘쳐나고 여러 고전물의 인용구가 나오며 책에 대한 고민을 하게 하는 심오한 책. 이 책의 줄거리 보다는 작가가 묘사하는 방식이 더 흥미로웠던 책이었다.

A decent read! I especially loved the early chapters because I found myself questioning what it is to “read”. I was slightly disappointed towards the ending, but it was well executed nonetheless.
Though I have to say, the relationship between the two main characters made me a bit uncomfortable because of the unbalanced power dynamic. I was a bit confused why people seemed to rave about the mmc and call it true love. A twisted obsession may be a better description, lol.
