It should be a crime ending stories at such good points because I really want more?! Honestly, at first, I was a bit bored because it felt a little pretentious watching Dominic and Ashley (or Juliet, as Dominic calls him) play these games of chess, both literally and psychologically. Their dynamic didn't immediately hook me, and even their physical relationship felt like fireworks: burning brightly, but sizzling out just as fast.
When Juliet said, "I love you," I immediately thought, Nah, that can't be true, bruh. I just couldn't believe him. But compared to Juliet's confession, Dominic's "I love you" felt much more genuine. Twisted and obsessive as it was, I never doubted that Dominic truly meant it.
Then came the reveal that Juliet had been manipulating Dominic all along, using him as nothing more than a stepping stone to get what he wanted. That was the moment the novel finally clicked for me. I knew things were about to get much more interesting, and I was so right.
I can't really say this novel is too dark, but it is definitely twisted. Rather than dwelling on every act of violence or suffering, ZIG goes straight to the point and keeps the story moving. Personally, I didn't mind that at all. I was actually enjoying myself watching Dominic do everything he did to Juliet. It was... exhilarating, to watch the eventual destruction.
Ironically, my biggest complaint is that it ended so soon, right when it was getting so good. I wanted more. I wanted to know what would happen after Juliet realized that he couldn't really do anything with his body anymore. I wanted to see the depthless pit of despair he would have to endure while living with Dominic, and, more importantly, how he would cope with it. That aftermath interested me even more than the climax itself, and I couldn't help wishing the novel had explored it further instead of ending where it did.
Now I'm lowkey debating whether I should jump straight into Lick Me Up If You Can just so I can at least get a glimpse of what happened after the ending... because I really want to know what happens next! (˶˃⤙˂˶)
3.5 stars. First ZIG novel that I read, although I am familiar with the type of stories they write. Many say that this is the most unhealthy relationship out of all the Kiss Me/If You Can universe, and while they're definitely right, I really wished the execution gave me more.
The story is not for everyone. We have an alpha that won't stop at anything to get what he wants, used to always be at the top of the pyramid, and then we have a gamma that is more than what he actually shows initially.
The twist was great, although it's easy to see it coming, but it still doesn't disappoint. There's an eerie feeling through most of the novel, where you can feel that it won't end up in the best way. The thrill of sensing that something isn't right was well done.
Now, my problem comes down to the length of the novel, it is too short for this type of story and I wished it had more space for the big events to sink in, and a slower pace to make the punches hit harder. It's the one thing that didn't allow me to feel fully satisfied, because the plot definitely could've be arranged for a longer execution.
I also wished this had side stories, because after that final chapter, I really wanted more, it ended in the middle of the climax and I just really wanted the aftermath and more of their story, considering that the rest of the stories is about their legacy.
Overall, a gritty and dark BL novel that excells in the characterization of the MCs and the spiral that everything came down to.
