My god, I am so obsessed! 黄金笼/Gold Cage's writing is solid, consistent, and impeccable. Every scene is vividly detailed, that even the intimate passages convey a sense of poetry and intensity that really fucked me up. And despite the heavy and taboo themes, the author (夜很贫瘠) crafted every relationship, plot point, and characterization with raw precision. I went in intrigued by the unapologetic tags and warnings, and I emerged completely captivated by how engaging and delicious this story has been for me! I also didn't anticipate some of the events here. It was that good to me!
First, Mu Hanxiao... MY, MY, MY! At first, I didn't really care for him because I was so invested in Mu Yu, but Hanxiao-gege, you unapologetically twisted gong! Groomed from childhood to be the perfect pillar of the Mu family, he bears immense pressure with flawless composure, except when facing Mu Yu. His obsession, jealousy, and desire for Mu Yu are terrifying and enthralling all at once. The contrast between his public omnipotence and private vulnerability is insane. He is so sexy! I cannot express this more loudly but, HE IS SO SEXY, especially with the latter parts and whenever Mu Yu is watching him while gardening!
And Mu Yu—my Helkin—is really exquisite. He is passionate, emotional, and intensely alive. Quick to jealousy, quick to pain, yet resilient, he endures the cage Mu Hanxiao builds around him, often willingly, often desperately. The narrative's portrayal of obsession, unspoken longing, and emotional captivity elevates their relationship beyond mere eroticism. He is such a pitiful child. I love him.

The central relationship between Mu Hanxiao and Mu Yu is intentionally complex and unsettling. The narrative fully embraces the power imbalance, blood ties, and age gap without attempting to soften or excuse them. I really love how 夜很贫瘠 leans into moral ambiguity, demanding that the reader confront discomfort and obsession head-on.
Anyway, maybe also one of the reasons why I am obsessed is because of how I was surprised with the doomed yuri?! The yuri to my yaoi?! Oh my precious, precious women! I love Lan Mo so much. Liu Shuyan will have to repent for the rest of her life, huhu. I hope Momo is now happy wherever she is. And the side characters! I love each and everyone! They're all so important and lovable to my Mu Yu!
Adding to those, the supporting characters, side plots, complex rivalries, and moral reckonings, are seamlessly integrated. And the resolutions are satisfying in a way that they complement rather than distract from the main narrative. It's all perfectly paced and satisfying, especially for a book with only 48 chapters. Every moment reinforces their golden cage.
The writing is really immense, I cannot move on. I feel like I've highlighted and annotated so much on this book. Even moments of pure longing, jealousy, and obsession feel tactile. Mu Yu's private sorrow, Hanxiao's obsessive love, and the interplay of power, desire, and control make the story not just erotically charged but emotionally devastating. Moreover, that end provided a really cathartic culmination to years of tension, longing, and conflict, reinforcing the metaphor of the title as both physical and emotional. This was really so good to me! I was reaching flow state while reading, haha!

devuelvanme a mi lesbiana😭
ok me gustó la mayor parte, solo que me impaciente un poco (mucho) con Mu Yu, osea, lo entiendo, pero yo siempre quise a Mu Hanxiao aunque lo haya confinado y nonconeado, es más, que se repita; pues Mu Yu con sus traumas bien presentes, vv suelta yo tmb quiero comida para perros
todo el lore familiar me tuvo ahí, tremendo chismee, y que rabia sentí con tantas cosas ajajjajahajaka (la liu esa, que bueno que se quedó sola)
esto tenía para mucho más, pero lo acepto

4.5 stars. This is now one of my favorite readings of the year. It reminded me of old school BL in many aspects, which are exactly the type of stories I love the most. I was looking for a dark novel to read and this gave me what I expected and more. There are others I've read that are darker, but I think this level fits the story well, making it over the top at times but very entertaining and without making it seem ridiculous. It's just very intriguing from beginning to end.
The plot is about Mu Yu, the illegitimate son from a powerful family that never fully accepted him. He's coming back to the country years later to attend his oldest brother's wedding, Mu Hanxiao, someone he has tried to leave in the past and now will have to confront.
So the main element of this story is incest. Both MCs share the same father, although they were treated differently while growing up. The circumstances made the family drama very gripping and I liked the pacing and good timing it had to drop surprise after surprise.
Now onto the MCs. Mu Yu facing up agaisnt injustice and showing resiliance were some of my favorite aspects of him. About Mu Hanxiao, he's character that slowly reveals to the reader so I was fully into that from the start. Although he is a very closed off person, it was actually easy to tell what was going on inside his head and the fact that he tried to put up a front made it better when things started going crazier.
Another thing I loved was the mystery surrounding the MCs' past together. I was also at the edge of my seat the whole time because of their behaviour when it came to one another, especially Mu Hanxiao. Their interactions were explosive and the constant push and pull was full of chemistry. I loved how provocative was Mu Yu at times and that it made Mu Hanxiao's obsession flare up.
Then we have the side couple which basically made me feel heartbroken. My senses were going off the rails because of the lesbian pairing and I guessed right from the start what was going on, but it didn't hurt less. I even wished they had their own novel because their story was very emotionally charged. The two women were fantastic as side characters and although I wished for , I still appreciated them a lot.
Back to the main couple, I thought that the progression between them was well done. Maybe with a few more chapters, especially towards the end, it could've been perfect but I believe it worked anyway because of the subtlety of Mu Hanxiao's desires and hints through the whole novel.
Ultimately, I liked how things were resolved and I think the ending suited the narrative and no matter how unhealthy those two were together, I was always rooting for them.
