Saxon barbarians harry Britain from the east. In the North, the Pictish threat looms. From the West, Hibernians send raiders from the land that shall one day be called Ireland. Aurelianus, newly anointed king, must defend Britain against all of these threats, whilst also dealing with the growing rebellion amongst his own people. For there are stories of another, more worthy king. One anointed by the old Celtic gods – whom the Christians refer to as the Devil Spawn...' An exciting new miniseries from acclaimed Artist and Writer, Liam Sharp. Epic brutality comes to the Spawn Universe.
Liam Sharp comes out swinging here. He handled the story, art, and colors himself, and the result is brutal, mythic, and absolutely gorgeous. The atmosphere is thick and cinematic—nobody builds mood like Sharp. This first issue sets a dark, compelling tone for the series, and I’m fully on board to see where it goes next. That art is next level stuff…
Aurelianus' Roman kingdom of Brittania faces an onslaught from many directions: northern Picts, eastern Saxons, and western Hibernians. Though his Christian General and his Pagan Druid would dissuade his next move, Aurelianus seeks a pact with the devil while preaching the will of the Lord.
This is some cool art. So far, as a fan of mythologies, ancient histories, and fantasy, this is a promising start amplified by the art. The situation echoes Robert E. Howard's 'Worms of the Earth", with Rome on the other side of the conflict, and in that it doesn't necessarily give off anything new. Yet. Liam Sharp/Liam McCormack-Sharp also has already given us a foray into some of this mythology through his Brave and the Bold run, where the art was also pretty cool.
Alright, first things first, this book is a visual feast. There is tremendous detail from the characters to the settings. I cannot stress how good this book looks. The story is a bit slow and dry with a lot of build up and introducing the world and story. I did appreciate the glossary in the back to help understand some of the language. This has some serious potential to be great and I will eagerly await issue two to see how it develops.
Sharp scripts and masterfully does the artwork for this Old English style 5th century set dark adventure that finds King Aurelianus on a quest through a haunted landscape to make a pact with the devil spawn for the future of Britain.
