This was just what I needed to get out of my reading slump! It harkened back to my childhood days of checking out collections of classic ghost stories and legends of the unknown from the school library, where I would devour those titillating tales like my life depended on it (it often felt that way). The stories in this collection felt classic, like I ones I remember older brothers of my grade school friends telling us at dusk under the streetlights, but still exciting and new, as the high of learning of a new supernatural terror I’ve been chasing since I was a kid has been satisfied in this without relying on cheap shock factors like gore or sex or over the top disgust. In some ways, I think this book uncovered the fact that the feeling of fear for the supernatural I felt as a kid just has an extra layer of complexity as an adult, and it’s often sadness- for the situation, the people, the world in which things like this happen. Some of these tales were slow burns, quietly devastating like “Angelita Unearthed”, and some made me squirm in my seat from the start, like “The Sum of Our Parts”; I took my time with this because I truly didn’t want it to end. The stories that lingered for me were Haunting House, Angelita Unearthed, Wanderlust, and Northwest Passage, but almost all of them had me hooked from page to page. If I could give 4.5 stars, I would have.
This collection of short stories includes several I have read in other publications. The three standouts for me are: The Daemon Lover written by Shirley Jackson, Tomatoes And The Full Moon by Yoko Ogawa, and Angelita Unearthed by Mariana Enriquez. All three stories create an unsettling, eerie feeling, while also captivating the reader. Highly recommended to those who enjoy ghost stories with some suspenseful twists and turns.
A really great collection of several different varieties of ghost stories, this also served as my long-overdue introduction to Robert Aickman, who I will hopefully be reading more from soon. His was one of a handful of stories here that genuinely creeped me out. A great way to while away a lazy Halloween afternoon.
Great short story collection and really cool idea of A24 to put this together. The two standout stories to me were “Wanderlust” by my favorite author Brian Evenson and “Northwest Passage” by Barbara Roden. The cover of this paperback is great too!
Really enjoyed this! An eclectic set of ghost stories by a pretty big variety of different authors. No two of these felt similar to each other, which was refreshing. A great, quick fall read
