Cyborg samurai Catherine LeBlanc pulls out the big guns—literally—when aliens unleash an apocalyptic weapon in the seventh book of this cyberpunk adventure.
The Antithesis want nothing more than to consume other worlds, altering their environments and birthing armies of monsters to continue their spread across the galaxy. Their next target is Earth, but with hundreds of Samurai protecting their home, it will be no easy victory. Taking root on Mars and its moons, the Antithesis have concocted a plan for the ultimate cosmic transform Phobos into a living satellite and hurtle it toward Earth.
Phobos has been terraformed into a breeding ground, creating an army capable of flooding the entire solar system. As the giant alien nest nears, the threat becomes increasingly apparent. If the Martian moon collides with Earth, the loss of life will be catastrophic and the Antithesis will be free to turn humanity’s home into a new hive for the enemy.
With Armageddon fast approaching, Catherine LeBlanc and her fellow Samurai only have a matter of days to prepare their counterstrike. To prevent the planet from turning into a wasteland, they will need to assemble international forces and meet their extraterrestrial foes on the battlefield. But even their combined firepower might not be enough to defend against what lies ahead . . .
The seventh volume of the hit LitRPG sci-fi series—with more than 23 million views on Royal Road—now available in paperback, ebook, and audiobook!
A bird that likes comfy and happy things, and also knives. Once ate a god’s eye and awakened the ability to see all that is good in the world. Known to steal shiny ideas and baubles. Currently forbidden from writing his own bios.
Yay! More Stray Cat Strut! Catherine is someone who was imbued with the power of being able to purchase super high tech weapons and armor by a bunch of aliens. The price is she has to kill a bunch of other evil aliens to get the points to do so. Here, she's forced to deal with an entire moon coming at her homeworld and the fact that all of the plans to stop the horror are contradicting one another. I liked it even if Cat is not doing much for a lot of the book but buying ammo.
Highly entertaining read, solid one volume arc with a nice mix of tension, action, and (at times crude) humor. The new samurai get their moments to shine as well. In other words, nothing surprising this far into the series.
Cat reluctantly becomes the locus for the Samurai around the world to stop the Antithesis ship made from a moon of Mars. She battles the invaders on earth and, via a big gun, shooting them across space. She also furthers her goals of making New Montreal more livable.
There's barely any action, the series' one strong suit. The main character is kind of boring, as are her interactions with other characters. The big crisis was dealt with off-screen. Much lower quality than expected from this author.
There were maybe three good scenes in the whole book, which is the only reason I've given it more than one star.
My advice: read the first book in this series, then quit.
The journey of Stray Cat continues, showing us a better glimpse of the person under the samurai. The world building continues to grow, and so do the cat puns.
The ending of this book made me think of a book written by Terry Pratchett - you think you are reading a fun book and suddenly it grips you by the throat and makes you tear up. That good.
If you liked the rest of the series, you’ll like this one. I just wish there was a bit more action/fighting in this compared to the past couple books in the series
