Created and performed by Brian Quijada and Nygel D. Robinson, and directed by David Mendizábal – Mexodus is a “dazzling showcase not just for what music can be, but also for the ecstasy of making it.” (The New York Times)
Mexodus tells the fictional story of Henry, a fugitive slave who escapes Texas by crossing the Rio Grande into Mexico, and Carlos, a doctor-turned-sharecropper who helps him along the way. It’s inspired by the little-known history of the southbound Underground Railroad—where thousands of enslaved people fled south to freedom.
And listen…I had NEVER heard about this part of history before. 🤯 Once I finished, I immediately went down a rabbit hole because…how is this not something we were taught?! I needed to know more.
The production itself? Whew. Absolutely incredible.
Nygel D. Robinson and Brian Quijada did their thing. The storytelling, the music, the rhythm—it had me completely locked in from beginning to end. It honestly felt like I was experiencing a live Broadway show…something in the spirit of Hamilton, but just for my ears. 🎧✨
I would 1000% go see this live if it ever came to Houston. No hesitation.
This wasn’t just a listen—it was an experience. Powerful, eye-opening, and unforgettable.
Mexodus is the telling of the story of a fugitive slave who escapes across the border from Texas to Mexico, and is rescued by a doctor turned sharecropper who helps him get to freedom. It’s the untold story of the southern trail of the Underground Railroad, where thousands of slaves escaped across the Rio Grande. And it is told hauntingly and with great care by Nygel D. Robinson and Brian Quijada, who sing and play music which was looped live in studio. This recorded version of their two man off broadway musical is incredibly powerful and worth a listen if you couldn’t make it to the show in person.
