He disappears for a living. She was raised to smile, not to question. But she knows a performance when she sees one. And she's daring him to drop his.
I've been many men. Covert ops medic. Disowned heir. The ghost who walked out of Louisiana and never looked back. I keep the names clean, the accents controlled, and the real me buried where no one's looking.
One night in Louisiana. My sister's best friend Evie, all grown up and nothing like I remembered. She made it happen, but I didn't see it. I was too busy memorizing the way she came apart in my hands.
I called her a mistake. Six weeks later she's in my apartment, calling my bluff, and every man who looks at her triggers something in me I have no right to feel.
She catches my accent slipping before I hear it. I catch the exact moment her breath changes. We've been reading each other like case files, but somewhere around day three, I stopped noting her patterns and started craving them.
The closer I get to Evie, the more the silence costs. The last time I told the whole truth, I lost my family. She makes me want to tell it again.

I was so curious to see how this story was going to unfold and it was great. It had me on the edge of my seat the whole time. And honestly in my head when Remy was speaking I heard Gambits voice. Overall, excellent story and so excited to see what happens next!

Shadowed Secrets: Saint is the 5th book in the Nightfall Syndicate series by Emery Rowan. This book includes tropes such as best friend's brother, secret identity, and a morally gray hero who doesn't just cross the line; he erases it. If you love dark romantic suspense where nothing stays buried, scroll up and one-click now. Saint contains dark themes, cursing, graphic violence, somnophilia, conditioning, possessive behaviour, and a fight against trafficking. This book includes triggers similar to those in Haunting Adeline and The Ritual, so please check the full list in the book.
Once again, Emery Rowan returns to the shadows with Shadowed Secrets: Saint, book 5 in her steamy Nightfall Syndicate series.
In this 5th installment, Saint excels at disguise but carries a troubled history. Evie meets him with the same uncompromising force he needs, not another problem to solve. With layered characters, threads of medieval intrigue, emotional complexity, and forbidden attraction, it promises an unputdownable story that begs for your attention.
The resonance of Rowan's latest work comes through in how it balances a familiar setup with strong emotional weight. Rowan, a loner and ace at vanishing, walks a tightrope between trust and desire, and while this sounds like a cliché in romantic suspense land, Rowan writes with such skill that the characters become delightful patterns of behaviour. The tension of the plot is so good that I found myself invested in every glance and unspoken word between Saint and Evie.
This is mainly because of Saint. Rowan is quite simply terrific at making him obnoxious in a compelling way. Rowan turns to this unstable identity—covert-ops medic, disowned heir, ghost of Louisiana—to examine loss and the weight of secrecy in an authentically raw way. It's easy to sympathize with his need to keep the real him hidden away "where no one's looking," and that heightens the suspense in the novel.
Evie is a masterclass in quiet strength. She is a character forged in the flames of social conditions who matches Saint's impenetrable personality with just as much defiance and an underlying weakness. Saint is not just an instant physical attraction; the chemistry crackles because they both carry open wounds alongside scars and recognize the cracks in each other's armour.
One of Rowan's strengths is pacing and tension. The romance slowly builds while secrets and mysteries are drip-fed to the reader just enough to keep them engaged, without veering into confusing territory. It packs seasoned no-nonsense banter rife with emotional undercurrents.
When Saint acknowledges that (spoiler alert!) "I called her a mistake," and six weeks later Evie calls him out on it, readers’ investment in the couple’s evolving dynamic is finally fulfilled. The humid, claustrophobic Louisiana scenery bleeds through the pages with its own ambiance, and that setting becomes a character unto itself.
Shadowed Secrets: Saint presents a man who "loses" his family for telling the truth, which may leave readers familiar with these types of novels feeling a bit of déjà vu, and it also features several plot revelations. While this may be rewarding in its emotional impact, many authors rely on dutiful tropes of loyalty & treachery. Also, if you are looking for a standalone story rather than one within an overall series arc, it’s true that this particular book has its own events and resolution, but some of the secondary characters are heavily implied to be tied back to the rest of the series.
However, if you like series where installments flesh out the central story of something bigger at work, this was written with that in mind; it is rewarding. Shadowed Secrets: Saint is a thrilling combination of suspense and romance that packs an emotional punch, interspersed with well-placed moments to keep you on the edge. This book is perfect for readers who love lengthy characters wrangling their pasts and deep, dark buried secrets gradually unfurling over time, entwining them in equal measures of bond and threat. Sure, it's sometimes treading well-worn ground, but Emery imbues it with evocative writing, and Saint and Evie’s chemistry makes it worth taking.
Rowan's latest is a hard-hitting follow-up for Nightfall Syndicate fans, but it's also an enticing entry point into a dark world of secrets at play at every turn, where the heart-beating ticking time bomb means that even moments matter.
By the end of Saint, you’ll be asking: What secrets would you gamble exposing just to let some in? What price would you be willing to pay?
Shadowed Secrets: Saint introduces a dark, high-intensity romantic suspense world centered around the Nightfall Syndicate a brotherhood of elite operatives who operate in morally gray territory where protection, violence, and emotional vulnerability collide.
Emery Rowan immediately establishes a strong tonal identity: this is not a traditional romance, but a blend of danger, obsession, and emotional fracture. The concept of “monsters who hunt other monsters” sets a compelling foundation for readers who enjoy antihero driven narratives with heightened emotional stakes.
The strength of the book lies in its atmosphere. The Syndicate itself feels like a tightly controlled, shadow-drenched world where every character carries visible emotional scars beneath their professional precision. This creates a strong sense of cohesion and sets up multiple storylines with clear potential for expansion.
Each operative is framed with distinct psychological and emotional traits, particularly the tension between control and emotional collapse when they encounter their romantic counterparts. This push and pull dynamic is a key driver of engagement and gives the story its emotional intensity.
The romantic element leans heavily into possessive, high heat dynamics, which will strongly appeal to readers of dark romance and romantic suspense. The idea of emotional healing through dangerous connection is central, reinforcing the theme that vulnerability exists even in the most controlled, hardened individuals.
Overall, Shadowed Secrets: Saint presents a strong foundation for a dark romance series with clear branding potential, compelling character archetypes, and a tone that fits well within the romantic suspense and antihero subgenre.
This is the story about Evangeline "Evie" Blanchard and Remy "Saint" Black (or so we thought his name was). Saint is the medic of the Nightfall Syndicate. Everyone knew him as Remy. But when his gramms faked a heartattack to get him home after years, he didn't knew that it would become his 'downfall'. Evie, his sister's best friend, finds him in a bar, they end up in bed! But then their lives intertwine. The human traffic investigation and the mysterious donors from the parties Evie had to organize as the perfect daughter of the Senator are somehow connected. Evie always knew something wasn't right, but when daddy told her it wasn't her business, she did what she was told. Even if it didn't felt right! With Darcy, the loud sister of Remy, and Evie living in Remy's house, the control is slipping within Remy. Will there be a happy ending of will the truth hurt them both more then they would think? Will they ever be truely honest with each other or will the shame and hurtof the past overrule their new found love?
It's yet again a great story in the series of the Nightfall Syndicate. Each book becomes better and better! Great job Emery! Waiting for Xander's story!.

Remy & Evie have had a a long history between them. Sure, she had a crush on him for the longest time & he never really knew about it but when she shows back up in his life, it throws him off.
Because her showing up coincides with him finding a connection between her father & a trafficking ring.
And these two are also having deal with their feelings for one another on top of the fact that Remy has done things behind her back & kept things from her.
But she ends up helping him & his team find more links that involve her father. But that ultimately leads to her being taken & then having to try & find a way out.
Remy does everything in his power to help her & protect her further & eventually truly gives into their feelings for one another.
The two of them were definitely very stubborn & had strong walls built up due to the many years of family trauma.
And they worked so well together too.
Really enjoyed reading this book & am excited to see what happens next.
There are so many secrets in this book that I don’t know where to start. Remy is a complex character and his sister inadvertently just blew the lid with his business partners, which left him in a bit of a quandary. He left his family eight years ago and forged a life without them until he didn’t! Evie, His sister’s best friend, I feel is his Achilles heal as he tries to keep his distance but fails. That said she was just waiting and wanting him to make a move. Once I understood what Remy was up to during his midnight visits to Evie this really confirmed my opinion that he was one messed up man! Throw in the suspense relating to how much Evie is involved in her father’s business dealings this story really keeps you on your toes and is heartbreaking too. This story draws you in and keeps you there until you can breathe a sigh of relief at the end. Well written story and definitely recommended.

A page-turning action packed dark romance, with suspense, danger, violence, fighting against trafficking, kidnapping, murder, mercenaries, intrigue, secrets, sister's best friend, forced proximity, steam, some great twists, a touch of humor, a love story and a great HEA. The Nightfall Syndicate are a brilliant group with wonderful banter and love for each other.
Remy "Saint" Athur LeBlanc III is a member of the Nightfall Syndicate team working in the shadows with a security business as cover (as Ghost, Frost, Reaper, Shadow, Blade, Nitro, Saint, and Chaos). The team each have their own skills, all ex-military, and Saint also has plenty of secrets having left his family eight years before.
Evie is Remy's sister's best friend and when Darcy decides to move in to Remy's place for the summer she invites Evie to join her. She's the daughter of a senator and works as her father's personal assistant, but there are things going on that she's unaware of and Remy and his team are investigating. Not helped by the pair having had a one night stand which neither can forget with her now staying three doors down from him.

5 ⭐ 3🌶️ Thank you Emery! Book 5 of the Nightfall Syndicate, and I am hooked just as much as I have been on the past books. This becomes a family affair of sorts. And of course, we get to welcome a new lady into the Syndicate for just a bit. Gotta love Saint (Remy) and Evie from the very beginning. Spice was present in just the first few chapters, and we LOVE that. The sister, Darcy was just as much part of the story, and I belive a solid supporting character. Nothing like falling for someone, while you are investigating their father, and that someone happens to be your sister's BFF. Really could not put this down once I started reading it. Somehow I have missed books 3 & 4, which I will absolutely be reading sooner rather than later. Looks like we'll be getting book 6 in September, so I've got plenty of time to get the whole Nightfall Syndicate read.
Shadowed Secrets: Saint is an exciting addition to the Nightfall Syndicate series. This fifth book follows Remy and Evie as they navigate family secrets, dangerous conspiracies, and a growing attraction that neither can ignore. Remy is a complex, morally gray hero with a hidden past, while Evie, a senator's daughter, finds herself caught in truths she never expected to uncover. The story is packed with suspense, action, and emotional twists. I enjoyed the chemistry between Remy and Evie, as well as the layers of secrets that kept me guessing until the end. The combination of romance, danger, and the Nightfall Syndicate's fight against evil made this a page-turner. While some parts felt intense, the well-developed characters and gripping storyline made it hard to put down. A great read for fans of dark romantic suspense.
Performing In Different Ways If possible, I would give this book 6*! Both Evie and Remy are formed to hide behind different personalities. Evie from a very early age by her father through praise tied to pride tied to performing in the way he wanted her to, to be an asset in his political career as a senator. That way she knows that Remy is performing in the same way her father does, only he learned to after discovering a terrible family secret that had him leave his Louisiana heritage after being disowned by his grandfather. She is his sister’s best friend and when he comes back to New Orleans eight years later, lured by a sickly grandmother, they meet again. The first chapters of the book show us the hot romance between Evangeline and Remington and how they circle around one another, before getting where they want to go. Then things change as more family secrets are coming to light and Evie uses her talents to uncover her father’s illegal actions, which she unwittingly helped build. All NFS agents are included in finding and releasing a group of trafficked humans, which has far reaching consequences. They realize that there are more layers to the organization guilty of these crimes than the one they stopped. Dark, exhilarating, suspense, human trafficking as a red thread through the series. Full of action, morally grey characters, exceptionally strong women and a story that kept me at the tip of my chair. I received a copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Sometimes a book just must be read because the description is very interesting and draws you in. This is one of those books. I was excited to see if the actual story could live up to the description, this book exceeded it. Remy and Evie reconnect after long time . Their past relationship is nothing compared to what their present has the potential to be. Well built walls fall because Emery refuses to buy into Remy’s representatives. They can be their authentic selves with each other. This is a must read for the captivating details.
This review contains my thoughts and feelings about this book.
Slight tangent. The story itself is good, and I liked following Evie’s story, though I thought she overshadowed Saint in the first half, the storyline itself is quite a bit slower than the previous books in this series and took a while to get back into the overarching plot of the series. I felt there is some jerky continuity throughout that broke the flow – perhaps just a different style. The ending is strong with a continued soft cliffhanger. Shadowed Secrets Saint is a fast-paced dark romantic suspense packed with chemistry, danger, and emotional tension. Saint was an intriguing hero whose hidden past and morally gray choices kept me invested, while Evie brought the perfect mix of determination and heart.
The secret identity aspect added an extra layer of suspense, and I enjoyed watching their relationship develop as truths slowly came to light. The story delivers plenty of action, emotion, and steam, making it hard to put down.
A compelling read for fans of protective heroes, dark romance, and suspense-filled love stories.
'The closer I get to Evie, the more the silence costs. The last time I told the whole truth, I lost my family. She makes me want to tell it again.'
The characters were very complex and compelling and complicated and absolutely perfect together. Plot was intriguing and intense and exciting and well paced. World building was excellent and solidly drawn. All in all a great addition to the series. Thoroughly enjoyed and highly recommend.

She see's what he is trying so hard to hide and he doesn't know what to do about that. When his personal/past life mixes with his current/work life everything changes for him. If he can let her in will they both survive, only time will tell. She is there for her best friend but being in his space isn't so bad. I would love to read more.

This next book in the Nightfall Syndicate series intense as much as it is intriguing. Evie has been helping her father with his campaign not knowing what secrets he kept. Reuniting with Saint who was adopted a different personality, leaves her confused yet elated. This mix of emotions and plot surprises were page turning. I can't wait for the next one.

"You've been Darcy's brother my whole life, the one who was always there, always more than I let myself say out loud. I told myself it was a kid thing. I kept it in amber and called it small. The night in the bar cracked it open, and what came out wasn't a kid's and wasn't small. Then it took me the last few months to believe I got to keep it. The field only confirmed what I already knew. There's no version of this where I don't love you."
Evie is definitely one of my favorites so far in this series! She is head strong and super smart. She is the perfect match for Remy. I was so captivated by the story that I couldn’t put it down. It kept my attention and kept me wanting more. I love a good dark romance that is not only spicy but suspenseful and this book delivered both!
