Every thought is a move. Every smile a snare.

Adam Sinclair is the kind of man who makes you feel seen—until you realize he’s been watching you all along. Charming, intelligent, and disarmingly attentive, he’s also a master manipulator who collects secrets like currency and uses them with surgical precision. To Adam, people are pieces on a board, and he’s already planned the checkmate before they know they’re playing.

Cyra never intended to cross his path. She’s already piecing herself together after a lifetime of emotional bruises, determined to keep her footing. But one act of kindness draws her into Adam’s orbit, and what begins as connection slowly twists into control. He knows exactly which wounds to press, which dreams to feed, and which fears to exploit.

As the walls close in, Cyra isn’t the only one caught in Adam’s game. Friends, lovers, and strangers become pawns in a high-stakes match where loyalty is fragile and betrayal inevitable. The deeper the entanglement, the more dangerous the truths he hides. Especially the ones buried in his past.

In The Archivist, nothing is as it seems. Narratives shift, reality warps, and every revelation forces you to question who and what you can trust. This is not just a story about a predator and his prey. It’s about the quiet moments where control slips, the dangerous comfort of familiarity, and the razor-thin line between protection and possession.

Step inside Adam’s meticulously crafted world where love is a lure, power is the prize, and the fall is always harder than the start.

For those who know pain’s a little easier with a laugh.

Grit, survival, and sharp-edged wit—those are the backbone of every story Robin writes. From the rugged resilience of The Agrarian Idealist to the high-stakes tension of The Syndicate Executive, the raw emotion of The Appalachian Entrepreneur, and the deep, unshakable love in The Whiskey Gentleman, she doesn’t just tell stories—she makes you feel them.

Her characters don’t come out unscathed. Neither do her readers. Because real life isn’t neat, survival isn’t pretty, and love—the kind that actually matters—isn’t about perfection. It’s about staying. Fighting. Choosing.

When she’s not pulling readers into worlds filled with grit, fire, and second chances, she’s perfecting the art of slow-roasted BBQ ribs, drinking coffee strong enough to fight back, and making sure her gardens—and her words—never stop growing.

She believes in second chances, finding light in the darkest places, and telling the stories that don’t just entertain—they refuse to be forgotten

The Archivist
~ Robin Alden Howard

This book is a dark, haunting, and unforgettable journey - and one that comes with trigger warnings readers should take seriously.

From the very first chapter, I found myself wondering: Where has this story been all my life? I don’t know what shadowed corner of the closet Robin Alden Howard calls home, but I need more of it.

Adam Sinclair, heir to old money and a renowned neuropsychologist, spends his days buried in the archives of serial killers - rewriting their histories to suit his own vision. Despite his carefully crafted control, he believes a wife will provide balance.

Cyra Nikolas, a journalist haunted by unsolved crimes from her college days. She’s convinced certain cases labeled “suicide” hide a darker truth. When her investigation uncovers a link that crosses Adam’s path, he decides she’s the one. What begins as a whirlwind romance quickly escalates into engagement, marriage - and what he believes is ownership.

But will long-buried secrets destroy them both? Or will the truth finally bring closure to the questions that have lingered for years?

Howard has created a masterclass in character-driven psychological suspense. Adam is layered with contradictions - serene and calculated on the surface, yet pulsing with a need for superiority. Cyra, though composed in her professional life, carries vulnerability and emotional depth that make her impossible not to root for. Together, they form a dynamic that is both magnetic and chilling.

What truly elevates The Archivist is Howard’s command of atmosphere. Vivid imagery immerses you immediately into the story, while emotionally charged descriptions ensure you feel every heartbeat, every shadow. The use of multiple POVs is brilliantly executed - not just offering another perspective, but immersing you in both sides of each chilling exchange. Pacing is relentless, just one more page turns into one more chapter resulting in a finished story. It's almost like the old Lay's chip slogan – you can't have just one (or something like that).

I devoured this book in one sitting (with the exception of a forced dinner break -thank you, my darling husband - and one Twix bar). It consumed me completely.

The Archivist by Robin Alden Howard is available for pre-order now on Amazon, with an official release date of October 1, 2025.

P.S. I don’t know what kind of spell Howard wove into these pages, but it works. The second I finished, I immediately launched into a full recap to my very reluctant, but indulgent husband - who, bless him, doesn’t do scary, murdery, or psychological thrillers. He may not sleep tonight, but I’ll be sleeping like a baby.

I would like to thank Robin Alden Howard for the opportunity to Alpha/Beta/ARC The Archivist. As always, all opinions and reviews are of my own volition. I have not been promised any compensation, current or future, by the author or publisher for a fair and honest review.

Let's start this one off with mind blown! 🤯 I was not prepared for how dark but compelling this book was. To me, Adam seems like a huge narcissis. He delves deep into the world of serial killers to satisfy his own version of what they should be. Or he should be as one.
Cyra, a journalist likes to dig deep and she's got a feeling that the listed "suicides" aren't actually a suicide at all.
Put the two of them together, and omgosh, this get really deep, dark, and the twists just keep you turning the page

This was a really deep and dark read. But boy was it a good one

This story is based around Adam and Cyra. A Journalist and a Neurospecialist. Two very different jobs, two very different people who are thrown together to create a dark, twisted and gripping psychological thriller.

Adam is an intriguing character with a dark twisted personality and an excessive need for control.
Cyra is head strong, inquisitive and needs control in her own way. Throw them together and what do you get? The perfect recipe for a toxic relationship.

I've never read one of Robins books before and at first i wasn't sure i would enjoy it, but i was pleasantly surprised to find the writing style made the story shine, it all fit perfectly, although at time felt a bit repetitive, that's what the story needed, it was about how Adam saw himself and how others saw him and even if you feel it's too much repetition, please stay with it because it all makes sense, I promise. Adam holds himself in a way that conditions how others see and feel about him.

Azai is the MVP in this story and even though he's only mentioned a handful of times throughout the book, he turns out to be the strongest person and the character we all needed.

This book is definitely hard to stomach at some points, but it's what brings the story to life and adding the casefiles of serial killers from the real world that everyone knows and disecting them made a bold statement in terms of creating Adams character. A seemingly normal, well respected man on the surface and a monster behind closed doors.

I do wish Cyra had been able to figure things out sooner, but i also know what a controlling relationship looks like and the self doubt that sneaks in.

I'd love to see more into Adam's past and the things he witnessed that made him turn out the way he did and the story implied that there were a lot of learned behaviours hiding in the shadows.

So, with that in mind, i'll leave you with this... Do you ever really know a person? Do you ever know what they are truly capable of? They are out there and they look like you and me, but what really goes on in the dark?

As always please check the TW because this is not for the faint hearted.

This book grabs you by the throat, offering no gentle easing into its dark currents. I was instantly plunged into the chilling psyche of its main character, whose complete detachment from reality was a constant, terrifying enigma. Every page became a tightrope walk as I waited, breath bated, for the inevitable fracture, a moment of weakness that seemed as thought it would never break through their controlled exterior. There were moments when this story disoriented me, leaving me feeling as though I didn't know what was happening, leaving only a heightened sense of dread and uncertainty. The book peels back layers to reveal how evil can be ingrained from a young age, a truly unsettling exploration. The climax was a breathless, visceral experience; the sheer urgency left me sweaty, my heart hammering as I desperately longed for the truth to be revealed to the other characters. This isn't just a story; it's an unsettling journey into the depths of the human psyche. Please read any content warnings before you dive into this dark, powerful read. this was an incredible read.

"The Archivist" by Robin Alden Howard

sᴛᴏʀʏ: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

sᴘɪᴄᴇ:

I have to start by saying this was my first read by this author so I went in blind. I didn't know what to expect. But I dived right in.

Overall, this was a really interesting, read with a twisted and thick storyline that had me feeling a mix of emotions. This book at every page takes a turn and has you questioning what is going on.

This book at times was very hard to follow and understand, and I had to put it down a couple of times. This is the only reason I gave it 4 stars.

Bottomline: It was a very thick plotted book from the main character and his history to the other characters, to the ending. If you like murder mysteries with a little tiny bit of romance, then this is the book for you. Make sure you read your trigger warnings.

*spoiler discusses one of the content warnings*

This book, I don't even know where to begin...
Wow.

If you are a fan of true crime, psychological thrillers, or a legit unhinged MC. You need to read this!!

This is a new to me author & I am now forever hooked.

Adam is truly deranged.
His mind had me reeled in from the very beginning.
His detachment from reality was a wild ride that I struggled to stay strapped in for, but I'm so glad I was.
It was dark, unsettling, and intense.
The plot? Truly gripping. You never knew what the next page held.
The writing style matched the themes of the book perfectly.

*The content warnings need to be read, especially as there is s3xual coercion by the MC to his victims, whilst he is married. This can be perceived as cheating, although Adam sees it as part of his ritual.

My favourite part of the book? The research done about other serial k!llers to add to the depth of Adam's ego & insanity.

This is absolutely one of my favourite reads of the year. A must read for any true crime, thriller fans!!

If you enjoy dark and unsettling novels, this one is worth the read. The plot is intense and gripping, and I felt the author’s writing style matched the shadowy tone of the story well. It was a fairly quick read overall..while a few sections dragged, the pacing always picked back up and kept me engaged.

Adam Sinclair is written in a way that’s both disturbing and fascinating. His need for control drives everything he does. He thrives on letting women think they’re in charge until he strips that power away. That twisted dynamic gives the book its chilling edge and sets an uneasy tone that lingers throughout.

The ending surprised me. I didn’t expect it to wrap up the way it did, but it felt fitting, just, and true to the narrative.

This book is a good fit for readers who enjoy true-crime documentaries, psychological thrillers, or character studies that lean heavily into dark themes.

This book doesn’t shy away from
uncomfortable truths, and that
made the story stick with me
long after I closed the book. It’s
not a light read — there are
moments of violence and
manipulation that are hard to
stomach — but that’s also what
gives the novel its power. There
is lots of serial killer murder
facts throughout that made the
book even more intriguing.

Overall, The Archivist is
disturbing, layered, and
thought-provoking. It left me
questioning how well we ever
really know the people around
us, and how far someone might
go to preserve the story they
want others to believe.

This was by far the best psychological thriller I’ve read in a hot minute. I devoured every word of it. It was definitely dark, graphic and intense. The pacing of the story was decent. The multiple POVs were executed well. I really like Adam and Cyra characters. Highly recommend checking triggers warning before you read. As some of the material is extremely dark.

Robin Alden Howard’s The Archivist is a darkly elegant descent into obsession, control, and manipulation—a psychological thriller that blurs the line between love and power with unnerving precision. Written with taut, deliberate prose and an almost clinical attention to human behavior, this novel is as cerebral as it is emotional, the kind of story that makes you question every smile, every motive, and every subtle shift in tone.

At the center of the novel is Adam Sinclair, one of the most chillingly believable antagonists in recent psychological fiction. He’s not a monster in the shadows—he’s the charming man who seems too attentive, too perceptive, too good at saying exactly what you need to hear. Howard captures his voice with a quiet menace, turning charm into weaponry and affection into strategy. Adam doesn’t just manipulate people; he studies them, anticipates them, and uses their secrets as chess pieces in a game they don’t even know they’re playing.

Opposite him is Cyra, a woman whose fragility hides a core of strength and determination. Recovering from her own emotional scars, she becomes both the latest target of Adam’s influence and the unexpected variable in his carefully controlled world. Their relationship unfolds with excruciating tension—what begins as a spark of connection slowly curdles into psychological warfare. Howard excels at depicting how manipulation operates not through grand gestures, but through subtle erosion—each conversation, each glance, each calculated kindness.

As the story unfolds, the narrative itself becomes part of the manipulation. Perspectives blur, timelines fracture, and the reader is never entirely certain who to trust. Every revelation feels like another trap being sprung, every moment of intimacy another step toward entrapment. The effect is both haunting and exhilarating, a constant push and pull between empathy and revulsion.

Thematically, The Archivist explores the insidious nature of control—the way abusers use knowledge as power, how love can be weaponized, and how survival sometimes means reclaiming your own narrative. The writing style mirrors this theme perfectly: elegant but razor-sharp, methodical yet emotional. It’s psychological warfare rendered in prose.

The archivist 4.25/5

This book follows Adam and Cyra as the main characters and I am not going to lie but halfway through the book I was quite frustrated.

Adam's character is intriguing in the way that he carries himself and the acts that he commits. His actions are a direct reflection of him being a sociopath but as the story goes on I started to question if that was true. He lacks empathy for the people he comes across and uses them for his benefit before discarding them. He plays the role that most women crave which is a man who cares enough but leaves them wanting more.

Cyra on the other hand is an inquisitive young lady who has been troubled by a murder case that occurred during her college days. She is know for the good work she does as a journalist and tries her best to help. She crosses paths with Adam when trying to investigate the murders and then things spiral from there.

My frustration in the middle of the story was that I felt as if things were getting a bit repetitive and that Adam's character was almost bland. But as I kept reading I started getting more and more intrigued by Adam and now I want to know more about his life before he became what he is now.

Overall an interesting story. The pacing was not bad at all but I have a few questions and almost wish I had a prequel diving into Adam's life.

I believe that few things are more compelling than attempting to figure out the inner workings of the human mind. Robin Alden Howard's fascination with this multi-faceted, complex topic shines through in The Archivist, a dark, artistic, gorgeously twisted, and highly original novel of seduction, obsession, and control.

This is not a light-hearted read. Those who have endured traumatic situations--especially involving manipulation--may want to approach this book with trepidation. Trigger warning aside, the author delves into the deepest recesses of the mind, exploring the dark corners of control and obsession. The pacing is great (short chapters that hit the brain like promotional movie trailers) and the smart, elegant writing kept me completely engaged.

Alden-Howard is an author to watch, and The Archivist belongs on the TBR list of all those who enjoy exploring the dark side of the human mind.

The Archivist is a masterfully constructed psychological thriller that succeeds by turning the spotlight onto its central villain. Rather than relying on simple plot twists, the novel meticulously builds suspense through the sheer intellectual power and unsettling obsession of a truly brilliant—and terrifying—figure of darkness. The story is structured as a thrilling game of wits, exploring themes of constant watching and control as the reader is invited to unravel the villain's motives alongside the main character. It’s a dark, relentlessly paced read, highly engaging, and ultimately delivers a chilling, satisfying conclusion that resonates long after the final chapter.

Received this book from the author through Book Funnel or Story Origin.

This is a short sampling of the longer one by the same name.
I can imagine the longer one will be quite a page turner, since this one was quite gripping and somewhat disturbing.

The Archivist: Special White Space Edition, my first read from author Robin Alden Howard. I don't know what to make of this book but it held my attention & I read it in a single setting. Good, well-written mystery. The characters likable & attention holding. The plot and the sub-plot were both well-developed. In ways it reminded me of Sheila Lowe's Claudia Rose's Forensic Handwriting Series in the way they slowly solved the mystery. I'll definitely be reading more in this series. "I received a complementary Kindle copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review." The gifting of this book did not affect my opinion of it. I look forward to reading more from this author.
