This story is filled with feelings, deceit, a crush, a Christmas loving family, skiing, love, drama, and more. I found it difficult to close my e-reader and get some sleep. I love books that take me away from everyday life.
Piper is a graphic designer and is obsessed with coffee and hazelnut creamer. It seems as if someone has been helping themselves with her creamer. She spots Lucas coming into the break room. He’s usually holed up in his office by this time, but she’s not complaining. Piper has a little crush on him. As she’s filling her coffee with her creamer, she gets lost in her thoughts. She hears someone saying “Paige.” Who is Paige? Lucas is talking to her, she has overfilled her mug and creamer is everywhere. Lucas asks her to order some more creamer since there isn’t any more. Well, crush or no crush, she lets him have it. She corrects him on her name and informs him that the hazelnut creamer is hers and not for everyone to use. After she’s finished ranting, he apologizes and tells her he had no idea it was hers. She should have put her name on it. Well, her initials are on the lid. He has the audacity to reach in and grab another container of creamer. Piper informs him that it belongs to Christy. “He inspects the bottle. ‘I don’t see a name.’” “Did you put any creamer in the refrigerator?” “No.” He returns the bottle to the fridge. Now Piper is put off by his inattentiveness and thinks about how they’ve “worked in the same building for three years and even assisted with a few of his projects.
Lucas has an industrial sized container of creamer for Piper the next day and he wants her to join him for lunch. She’s wondering why he wants to take her to lunch. “I want to ask you something, but it requires a bit of explanation.” He invites her to Marco’s…she’s not turning that down. It’s an upscale steakhouse that she’s been wanting to visit.
Lucas doesn’t beat around the bush; he wants Piper to “join me for the Christmas holiday with my family. As my girlfriend.” Piper is lost in her thoughts of could this be real and did she hear what he asked her correctly? It seems as if Lucas had a girlfriend and had already informed his family, he was bringing her. He doesn’t want to have to explain everything about the breakup, especially at Christmas. Lucas is offering her “an all-expense paid holiday at a ski resort.” He’s also ready to “book a day at the spa, give you a shopping spree in town, whatever you want.” Piper has some questions about how long the trip will be and what she will need to do. The trip will be for nine days, family game nights, hanging out, food, Christmas movies, and more. Piper will also need to pretend they’re in love. The trip will be to “Steamboat Springs that has a ski resort.” There will be other things to do such as snowshoeing, hiking, and many other things to do. After talking with her girlfriend, Christy, she decides to go along with the plan. Maybe the pretend relationship will become real relationship.
Now, Lucas is not known for his attentiveness or thoughtfulness at all. His family takes to Piper right away and is warm and welcoming He’s gung ho on competing with his brother, Mac and tackling the high mountains on the first outing. Mac notices Piper’s hesitancy right away and offers to choose a less strenuous slope, but she wants to make Lucas proud. Pride is such a terrible thing. She has no business being on that mountain.
This story is filled with so much going on and I don’t want to spoil it and reveal too much here. Just trust me when I say drama, I mean drama…not the bad kind of drama. Competition during the Christmas activities, cookie decorating, etc. Lucas may not be outgoing, but his family is. There’s also his brother Mac who takes a liking to Piper. Including her in things when Lucas is busy with an old friend (female) and work. What will happen with this charade? Will the two of them be able to pull it off? Will Mac call him out on not paying enough attention to Piper? Will the secret of them not being an actual couple be revealed?
