Hi. I'm Rhett. I have the perfect life. Amazing children. Beautiful wife. Yet, I still can't seem to find happiness. I hear voices and it's making my life miserable. I'm deeply, deeply depressed and the voices tell me to take my own life. And then, I do. I land in some weird afterlife purgatory called the Void. They tell me I have to take souls. This book was border line dumb. Bizarre really. And so many things didn’t make sense. If this would have been double the size and if the author would have made it more of a fantasy the it could have been better.

So this book was very thought provoking! I will say it’s definitely written like it was self published and a debut book. Which is not a bad thing!! I think I would have liked for the book to be longer to dive into the details more because it felt like sometimes it was just surface level. But the concept was amazing and the read overall was great. I just wish greater detail was put into it because I found myself really wanting more. But I’m a huge fan of afterlife style books and this one was very unique and unlike anything I’ve read before. :)

Pros: I was in a reading rut and this book pulled me out like the house was on fire! That's a book reference but you'll only get it if you read this.


If you're into macabre and morbid things like death and the afterlife, try this book. The perspectives of "the void" are thought provoking and interesting. I found myself thinking about this when I wasn't able to be reading, wondering what happened next.


I loved how each character had their own personality but how they all fit well together with inside jokes and history. I loved the overall plot!


Cons: Not necessarily a con, but this book leaves you on a cliffhanger and if you're like me, I don't enjoy those much! I'm hoping the author has another installment planned because I need to know what happens!


Conclusion: If you're in a reading rut and want something that deals with death, the afterlife, and a perspective you don't see presented much, if at all, give this a shot!

JAW ON THE FLOOR!!!
This book has to be one of the most unique books I've ever read! I was hooked from beginning to end, Every time I thought I knew what was gonna happen... I didn't. This book was such an easy read and totally worth reading! If I could rate 10 stars I would!

The premise sounded familiar at first, man dies, goes to an afterlife but the execution is what sets this book apart. Rhett is not a hero and the book never makes him one; he’s flawed, sometimes infuriating, and achingly human. I appreciated how the author doesn’t romanticize his family or his life: the descriptions of his “perfect” life feel fragile from the first chapter, and the voices that torment him aren’t easy to dismiss horror movie spirits but a real, clinical-sounding ache that readers who’ve struggled with mental health will recognize. The Void’s rules take souls or be punished, drive a sense of dread that’s both metaphysical and procedural, like a grotesque bureaucracy of the afterlife. The multiple narrators are a masterstroke: each viewpoint reframes events, revealing motives and consequences in ways that make the book feel morally complex rather than manipulative. My only critique is I wanted even more backstory on certain secondary characters, but that’s a small quibble. Overall, a thoughtful, haunting read that handles suicide, grief, and moral ambiguity with sensitivity and imaginative energy.

This book broke me open in the quietest way. Rhett’s voice is raw, honest, and painfully real. On the surface, he has everything, children, a loving wife, a stable life, yet inside he is drowning. The portrayal of depression and intrusive thoughts feels frighteningly authentic, never sensationalized, never cheap.

When the story shifts into the Void, it becomes something truly special. This afterlife purgatory is dark, haunting, and morally complex. Being forced to take souls, any souls, or face brutal punishment creates an impossible ethical dilemma that kept me turning pages long into the night.

What truly elevates this novel is the way it explores love and sacrifice. Told from multiple perspectives, the story shows how one person’s pain ripples outward, affecting everyone they love. By the end, I wasn’t just reading, I was grieving, questioning, and reflecting.
