When a fire-and-brimstone presidential candidate declares the Rapture is just weeks away, America loses its collective mind in a blaze of holy hysteria. Enter Dr. Helen Hand- a razor-sharp freethinker from Los Angeles- who's forced to infiltrate a Bible-thumping college in Kansas. Her goals? Enlighten young minds and thwart the End Times, but she falls in love. Immaculate Deception is a wickedly funny romantic comedy for nonbelievers. A "Rom Com Non".
The beauty of a novel by William Missouri Downs is that you are guaranteed not just the entertainment of a good story, but the bonus of a deeper look at the philosophical questions of life. “Immaculate Deception” could not possibly be more timely. In an age where reason and free thinking has been left in favor of divine idiocy, Downs not only points to the absurdity of our current American dilemma, but does it with a cast of characters that show the spectrum of humanity’s best and worst attributes. The comic timing and way he interweaves the irrational and hilarious nature of religion, politics, philosophy and love kept me reading this book late into the night.
As a romance novelist, I was enamored with how he balanced the heart and connection between characters, and the antics of a country under the insanity of religious fervor. It is, all at once, a cautionary tale and also offers a warm sense of hope that somewhere, within at least a few of us, reason still exists. Helen Hand is a heroine we can all get behind and the way we explore and understand the world through her journey into the dark and ridiculous side of evangelical religion and her own foibles with love makes this novel not just comedic genius but also big hearted. Downs, is by far one of my favorite writers. His dialogue is always on point and does so much for the story and building the world. His writing is smart, and playful, and dynamic. This is the book that anyone with half a brain, a compassionate heart, and an impending sense of doom under the current fascist regime needs right now.
