I went into this one not entirely sure if I was going to even like Thad after Gavin's book, where he acted like the world's biggest bellend a lot of the time, BUT I ended up thinking Gavin was the bellend and Thad's actually pretty cool!

Graham is the absolute sweetest and I loved how much he was so into Thad and how he was all in as soon as they started dating really. I mean, that first date had me squeeing like a pre-teen! So bloody cute!! The snacks, the blankets, the mood lighting.... I could just picture Graham blushing and being all awkward cute about it! I also loved the indignation they had when the team thought they were wearing matching costumes for Halloween when one was Greek and one was Roman!!

I'm glad we now have the full story of what went on when Gavin and Thad were teenagers though. I cannot believe how incredibly dense Gavin was about why Thad even did what he did! Dakota must have the patience of a literal saint is all I can say...

This team may actually be my favourite of all Brigham's teams though. The character's are just so fun and weird and so into living their best lives and I can't get enough. I am disappointed that Tanner isn't going to be paired up with Luke, but I'm so fucking excited that Luke's story is up next! He's been a standout character to me from book one and I was keeping my fingers crossed that he'd be getting a story of his own! I love how growly and awkward he is but I can't wait to see how the chirper wins him over - although, I would die to see Luke fall first!!!

I really hope Tanner is getting a book with Leif though - basically I just need Tanner to have a story because he's completely nutty and I always find myself highly entertained by his antics. His story would be so high energy that I'd probably need a nap after!

I’d been looking forward to Thad’s story, and I just loved his and Graham’s romance!

Thad didn’t come across as the greatest guy in Gavin’s novel, so it was interesting to get Thad’s PoV here. The brothers surely had a lot of things to work and talk through, and it was interesting to learn more about their backgrounds and pasts. I liked Thad though, he was loyal and patient, and it was clear that he’d worked hard to get to where he was - even if it took a little ‘brotherly’ blackmail to get there.

I loved him and Graham together, even if it took a bit for them to get there. And that first kiss? Totally gave me butterflies, and it was one of the best first kisses I’ve read this year! Graham wasn’t ready to acknowledge any attraction or feelings he might have for Thad at that point though, hence the slow burn. Being a workplace romance there was some close proximity, and the tension and bit of pining between them was great. I absolutely adored their first date, and things quickly got romantic and swoony after that!

Both Thad and Graham had some fantastic character developments, and it was sweet to see how understanding and supportive they were of each other. Thad had been through a lot, and had put up a lot of walls, so it was lovely to see him letting Graham in and starting to heal.

Delayed Penalty was the kind of story that I didn’t want to put down, and I was smiling and swooning a lot! It was a tender romance and I loved the vulnerability and honesty Thad and Graham shared. I can’t get enough of this series, and I’ll impatiently wait for the next book to drop!

Such a hard earned HEA for Thad and Graham. The subjects dealt with in this story were serious and interesting. Thad's back story, the difficulties he endured in and out of prison. His struggle to make a better life for himself and the unexpected love he finds with Graham makes this such a beautiful book. The closure he gets with his brother and dealing with his parents ends the story about these twin brothers, Gavin and Thad, who finally find common ground.
A great addition to this wonderful series.

B / 4 stars

Delayed Penalty, the fourth book in Brigham Vaughn’s Scoring Chances series, continues a storyline begun two books ago in Body Check , namely that of the fractured relationship between Boston Harriers General Manager Gavin Racine and his twin brother, Thad, an ex con who now works for the Harriers on their social media team. Running alongside that is a friends-to-lovers / bi-awakening romance between Thad and the rather straight-laced (and very straight) Graham Pennington, one of the Harriers’ star players, who have become firm, if unlikely, friends over the months Thad has been working for the team.

All Graham really knew about Thad to start with was that he was the GM’s twin, that he’d been in prison and that, like Gavin, he’d grown up playing hockey - but the more time he spent around Thad, the more he suspected that Thad’s outwardly confident, flirty manner was just a mask for something more serious and insecure. Catching Thad in one of those rare moments he let his guard down afforded Graham a glimpse of the lonely but caring guy behind it – so he invited Thad to lunch and they’ve been friends ever since, regularly meeting up to eat, go out together or just shoot the shit. Close friendships like theirs happen all the time in high pressure environments and are nothing new… but one night, a tussle over video game controllers sees Thad and Graham getting up close and personal in a completely different way. Graham is straight (or has always thought so), but has certainly noticed – in a completely objective way of course – that Thad is a very attractive man; although he’s never wanted to find out what Thad’s mouth feels like on his or what his lips taste like… until now. Thad is taken by surprise when Graham kisses him – but not enough not to kiss him back. Even though he kinda wishes he hadn’t after Graham freaks out and calls it a mistake. Shit. The only real friendship Thad has ever had, and now it’s totally fucked up.

Graham and Thad don’t see or speak to each other during the summer, but neither of them really forgets that sizzling kiss – and when the new season begins, they’re both saddened by the newly awkward and stilted nature of their interactions. Graham hates the new distance between them – but a growing realisation that maybe the path he’s mapped out for himself might not be the right one has set him thinking about why none of his past relationships have lasted and what – and who – he really wants to be with. It’s crazy and more than a bit risky (given Thad is his boss’s brother) but Graham is finally able to admit to himself that what he’s feeling is more than merely an appreciation for Thad’s good looks, that there’s been something more than friendship buzzing between them for a while now and Graham wants to explore it. The thing is… after the kiss and all the awkwardness, how does he go about telling the guy he like likes him?

Well, the first date Graham comes up with is dorky and sweet and adorable, and Thad is completely stunned and incredibly touched at the thought that Graham is actually trying to romance him. He’s never had a relationship before – he missed out on a lot of things while he was in prison and learning how to deal with having feelings for someone was one of them – and Graham is the first person he’s met who makes him think a relationship might worth considering. But he’s also scared of losing the first scrap of stability he’s had in decades; the fourteen years since his release haven’t been kind to him, but at last he has a job he enjoys and is damn good at, a chance at reconnecting with his brother, and maybe has even found somewhere he can feel like he belongs. So far, he’s taken Gavin’s edict about not screwing around with anyone in the organisation very seriously – but he’s also lonely and longs for connection. Graham is everything Thad never knew he wanted or needed... he just has to decide if being with him is worth the risk.

Graham’s longing for Thad and his confusion over his sexuality are well written, and their romance is a nicely-done tender but intense slow-burn. They have great chemistry and I liked them as a couple; Thad may have over a decade on Graham, but neither of them really knows what they’re doing and I liked the way we’re shown that they really do care about each other and are there for one another at every step of the way. The early stages of their friendship are written about but aren’t shown in great detail, but having quickly established their close relationship means that the author has plenty of page time to thoroughly explore the issues that have the potential to screw things up; Thad’s fears that he’s not good enough for Graham, that his baggage will eventually send him running, about the risk to his job; Graham’s deep-seated need to not let anything interfere with his play and his place on the team.

When he was first introduced, Thad came across as something of a shady character who blackmailed his brother into giving him a job, but since we learned the real circumstances behind his ten-year incarceration two books ago, it’s been clear he’s not a bad person. I’m always up for a good redemption story, but this isn’t quite that; it’s more a story about a man working through a lot of emotional baggage and being scared of losing what he’s worked hard to attain while at the same time finding out who and what and where he’s meant to be (and who with). Combining that with the romance works well because Graham is exactly what Thad needs, non-judgmental, supportive and with a fierce belief in him that he hasn’t really had before from anyone in his life, even Gavin, and certainly not their parents (who are a pair of self-centred arseholes whose arseholery is certainly responsible for so much of the brothers’ emotional damage.)

Speaking of Gavin… the main problem I had with the book is to do with him and why Thad went to prison. This will be spoilery if you haven’t read Body Check, (so feel free to stop reading now if you haven’t) but if you have, you’ll already know that Thad took the rap for a crime Gavin committed when they were seventeen*. Gavin’s behaviour had become increasingly wild and erratic back then, and Thad genuinely feared that his going to prison would literally be the death of him. It’s an incredibly selfless thing to do, as was the reason Thad ended up getting another five years added to his initial five year sentence* (looking out for someone else) – but given his sacrifice, I don’t really understand why Gavin cut Thad out of his life for so many years and was so unpleasant towards him for so long. Thad loved his twin so much that he gave up years of his life for him, only for Gavin to ignore him and treat him like dirt. It makes Gavin seem like a complete arsehole and, honestly, made me dislike him.

(*incidentally, a five year sentence for robbery when a minor seems excessive)

But with that caveat, I enjoyed Delayed Penalty for the tender and sexy romance, for the author’s careful exploration of where Thad is at mentally, and his commitment to continuing to work on his issues, and for Graham learning that maybe the safe choice isn’t always the right choice. The book meanders a bit towards the end (although I wasn’t really clocking the page-count until that point), and there are a few preachy moments I could have done without, but it’s a good, solid read and on the whole, I’m happy to recommend it.

Thank you, Brigham & Neon Rainbow for the 4th Scoring Chances book Delayed Penalty. This series focusing on the NHL team the Boston Harriers, it can be read as a standalone but I highly recommend reading the series in order. Actually, I recommend starting with the Rules of the Game series. Delayed Penalty featured nods and cameos from Brigham's previous hockey series.

Delayed Penalty focuses on Thad & Graham and their journey to a HEA. Thad is a bad boy who honestly broke my heart the more we got to know him both through his own POV & Graham’s. But don't worry not only do they get a HEA, readers get Jesse's halloween costume 😜. Delayed Penalty is full of heart, heat, hockey and healing.

i really enjoyed this one! loved the friends to lovers aspect and how once graham knew he wanted thad he went all in and their first date was adorable. i enjoyed the way the relationship built throughout the book and it was very interesting to read about someone who was incarcerated and how that experience effects them over a decade later, definitely going to need to read more into the topic.

Omg I adore Thad and Graham so freaking much!!!! The Golden Boy and the complicated ex-con who are just made for each other! I was so excited to read their story and it was so amazing to see them exploring how it is to be dating someone, in Thad's life for the first time and Graham dating a guy for the first time. I love how they communicated and took each step together.

Delayed Penalty by Brigham Vaughn is the 4th book in her Scoring Chances series. I suggest that you read the others first, especially Body Check, to understand this professional hockey team and the characters that play a major part in this story. It is about a twin who went to prison for his brother and has all the baggage that comes with that and now works for his him and the forbidden hockey player that he falls in love with. Thad Racine is a protector, so much so that he went to prison for something his brother, Gavin, did when they were young because he had a bright future playing hockey and he knew he wouldn’t be able to handle being there. It took 10 years of his life away and when he got out, he had a hard time just getting a job because he was a felon. He worked at several low paying jobs, one of which gave him photography and social media skills, and also moved around. When his most promising job folded, he contacted his brother Gavin who was now general manager of the Boston Harriers NHL team and coerced him into giving him a job on their social media team. Graham Pennington, one of the offense players had noticed him, started talking to him, and they became friends, often having lunch or a night out together. They seemed to be opposites with Thad being a player and Graham just wanted to be in an exclusive relationship where he was loved. He was currently seeing Madison, but as with most of his other relationships, there wasn’t the spark he was looking for. When he and Thad were watching TV they kissed and Graham felt that spark as well as a lot of other confusing feelings. Then summer came and he left to visit his family and go to his cottage while Thad stayed in Boston, making extra money taking portrait pictures, something he was good at, and both of them were thinking of each other. When they returned and the season was beginning Graham tells Thad he can’t stop thinking about him and doesn’t know what to do about it. Things progress until Madison knows something is wrong and she encourages him to see what might happen with him. They start seeing each other and their feelings grow. This is the first real relationship Thad has ever been in and he wants to do the right thing so it can continue so they decide to not let anyone know they are together, especially since Gavin warned him he would be let go if anything happened with him and members of the team, and they also started slow with love scenes since this was Graham’s first time with a man. They decide to be exclusive with each other and in time have some very hot love scenes. But it is hard for them to keep their relationship to themselves and they are almost caught several times. Thad has also had a rough relationship with Gavin but things have been changing in that area too, as they have started growing close again and he doesn’t want to ruin that bond either. This goes on for most of the season, with lots of hockey games being played as the Harriers go in search of the cup. But they are caught by Gavin in a compromising position and everything comes out. Luckily once Thad explains all that he has gone through and the reasons behind what he has done and all that he did was out of love and that Graham helped him to better himself and that he loved him their reconciliation is sweet. Thad is able to tell Graham more about what happened to him and why he did what he did which brings them even closer. There is an interesting scene where Thad and Gavin reconnect with their parents that doesn’t go very well and Thad meets Graham’s family and they like him. Eventually they say I love you and things are looking good for their future together. I really enjoyed this story as I have all the others in the series. I was looking forward to reading this one because Thad was not a great character in previous ones and it was good to hear his story and that he was able to find love. Thad is hiding his real self at first in this story because of all that happened to him. But Graham sees behind the walls he put up and is able to slowly break them down by being there for him and always understanding. Graham hadn’t been successful in finding love which he figured out was because he was being “safe” in his relationships when what he really wanted was someone who turns him upside down and shakes him up which he found in Graham. They went slowly to learn more about each other and were careful so their relationship could grow and even with all the things that happened they were able to see they belonged together. Hockey plays a big part in this story with lots of game action and that almost everything revolves around it. Gavin, family, and the team are also important in it as they bring them together so they can find love. I highly recommend this book, especially if you like stories involving hockey, a man who went to prison for someone he loves, another man who thought he was straight but wasn’t, and how they are finally able to find the love they both want.

Thad Racine is just getting his life back together and enjoying his new career working for the Harriers and with his twin brother, who’s the GM. But he still has a lot of emotional damage that he’s working through.

And he develops a friendship with one of the players, Graham Pennington. And at first they’re just friendly and seem to be able to get along and understand each other, but along the way it starts to get a little bit more complicated. Thad is bisexual and has been out, but Graham has always thought of himself as straight and has a girlfriend. But there’s this building of tension between them that leads to a kiss that sends them into a spiral of confusion and awkwardness.

And Graham is struggling with his own thoughts and feelings and trying not to hurt anyone. He’s always been the good guy who follows the rules. But now they’re sneaking around and lying to people, so there’s this whole forbidden element and there are reasons why they think they shouldn’t tell anyone. But the truth usually finds a way to come out. They’re both afraid of the fallout, even though they’re also realizing more and more that the whole relationship is becoming more than either of them expected.

I really felt for Thad. In the other books he was kind of cocky and I questioned his motives. But when I learned more of his backstory and got deeper into what’s going on with him, I could see that he is someone who is loyal and cares for those around him and is such a protector and caretaker. And he got a raw deal in life, and he gets judged for it even though the circumstances are not what they seem, and it has left him with self-worth issues. I love a good redemption arc.

And Graham is responsible and focused on hockey, and has been trying to find a meaningful relationship. But now he is discovering this whole new side of himself that he never realized was possible. And he is learning that being spontaneous and not planning everything out can be fun. And he is protective of Thad too. Together, they are combustible, passionate, and emotional, and they just have this bond that is so good for both of them, even though it could have repercussions on both of their lives.

This is a friends-to-lovers, age gap, bi-awakening, forbidden romance between a hockey player and team social media rep. I loved the trust and vulnerability between these two, and the themes of found family, safety, true love, partnership, and fulfillment.

Delayed Penalty is the fourth book in Brigham Vaugh’s Scoring Chances series. Although I think this series is best enjoyed in order, you could read each book as an interconnected standalone. Here’s what you can expect from Thad and Graham:

🏒 MM contemporary hockey romance
🏒 Third person dual point of view
🏒 Guaranteed happily ever after
🏒 Open door spice
🏒 Friends to lovers
🏒 Bi-awakening
🏒 Forbidden relationship
🏒 Age gap
🏒 Golden boy/bad boy
🏒 Redemption arc

Ensure you review the content and trigger warnings to decide if this book is right for you. Note this list of warnings may be incomplete. Please take care of yourself while reading.

Thad has been such a wildcard since we met him in Body Check, his brother Gavin’s book. I wasn’t totally sure what to make of him at first, but I’m thrilled he got his own book and a very well-deserved happily ever after. He wasn’t always the greatest, inadvertently blackmailing Gavin and his boyfriend Dakota, but this book is absolutely a redemption arc for him. After he strikes up an unexpected friendship with the team’s golden boy and alternate captain, Graham, their friendship takes a confusing term. Cue a bi-awakening, a forbidden relationship, and a journey towards happily ever after.

This book is a great addition to the Scoring Chances series. Although this is Thad and Graham’s love story, I really enjoyed the focus on Thad’s healing. Although Thad is the “bad boy,” we quickly learn that a lot of it is a facade he’s had to develop to protect himself after spending nearly a decade in prison. His relationship with his twin brother is complicated, but they make leaps and bounds in this book and I really love the healing journey they’re going on together. As I’ve come to expect with Brigham Vaughn’s work, this book was an excellent blend of humour, spice, feelings, and just the right amount of angst. And Luke Crawford is getting his book next? We are spoiled! I know there’s a soft guy under that gruff exterior and I’m here for it. Another great job, Brigham!

I'm so happy Brigham Vaughn gave Thad his happy ending, he totally deserved it.

We met Thad in the second book of this series, where his twin brother Gavin, the General Manager of the Boston Harries, falls in love with Dakota, yoga and pilates instructor. Gavin gives his ex-con brother a position with the Harriers and Thad is slowly building a solid reputation by doing an amazing job.

The twins' lives are still tightly interwoven even if they spent more than two decades apart. In the previous book, we got to know what happened when they were 18 years old and why Thad ended up in prison, but we only had Gavin's pov about that.
Now we can really understand what Thad went through and how all that almost irremediably affected him.
On the outside, Thad seems like a cool guy, very good at his job, easygoing with the players, always with a flirty attitude towards men and women.
In reality, Thad is a lonely man, trying to move forward while carrying heavy issues from his past. He often feels inadequate, unworthy, he’s used to being left behind and he uses sarcasm and flirting as an armor; when Graham offers him his friendship, he finally feels like someone can really see him.

Graham is quite the opposite: he’s the golden boy, the sweetheart, the man with a solid plan for the future, the amazing hockey player.
But when Graham kisses Thad for the first time, everything he’s known so far crumbles and leaves him full of doubts.

I liked how the author described Graham’s sexual awakening and especially the fact that he took his time to understand all the new confusing feelings he was having, instead of jumping in bed with Thad.
And I also loved how Thad had to work hard to let himself relax and believe that Graham was there for him, that he could trust him completely and that he wouldn’t leave. I appreciated very much that Thad wasn’t a kind of sex coach for his boyfriend, but that he held back to not pressure Graham.

The progression of their relationship is slow and they need to adjust along the way, they also need to protect their jobs. But their love is steady and they don’t let the difficulties push them apart.

The Boston Harriers, both players and management, are amazing, I had so much fun reading about Tanner and Jesse’s antics. I hope the next book will be about Luke Crawford because I’m very interested in his beef with his critic fan.

I received an ARC of this book from Neon Rainbow and this is my honest review.

4.5 ⭐

Well, I knew from Thad’s first cocky appearance that he would win my heart, and boy, did he ever!
There’s just something about “bad boy” types that always draws me in. Their tough exterior, either cocky as hell or the “leave me alone” attitude, somehow always masks a soft, broken inside. My heart ached for all that he went through.

But first… Delayed Penalty is the fourth book in Scoring ChancesBUT I would wholeheartedly recommend reading at least Body Check (book 2), which is Gavin, Thad’s twin brother, and Dakota’s story...although I don’t know how anyone could live without reading Conor and Jesse’s story. Jesse, our resident chaos demon ❤️ But I digress...

At the centre of the book is Thad Racine, “bad boy” who is trying to rebuild his life, and Graham Pennington, the team’s golden boy. Their connection is strong from the beginning and it grows naturally out of friendship, so the shift from friends to something more feels natural, emotionally grounded. And they are soooo good together! The easy way they fall for each other is the same easy way you will fall for them. 🥰

As I already said, I love it when a tough exterior slowly gives way to someone softer, and boy oh boy does it happen with Thad. He goes from cocky, flirty, “nothing touches me” attitude shaped by years of trauma and life he hadn’t planned for to someone deeply loyal and protective, with so much love to give. I loved that Graham was such a wholesome golden boy! He is kind, patient, and always supportive, even when not fully understanding Thad’s actions. It was refreshing how quickly he went all in once he understands his feelings, so his bi-awakening was very low angst. 😁
It's their sweetness and lots of small moments that made their connection feel real to me, but don't worry, there was also much emotional and sexual intensity between them. 😉

Thad’s emotional growth and his complicated relationship with his twin brother Gavin, where the parts that added a lot of depth to the story in my opinion. I was over the moon when they finally started to repair and grow their relationship, but there were also moments I was so angry at Gavin. If anyone needed a redemption arc, it was Gavin, not Thad. 🤨😤

The book also has plenty of humour and playful moments, especially when the team is involved (chaos demons all around 😉). I’m not sure any team, including the Harriers, can beat the Otters as my favourite team, but they are definitely one of the quirkiest and most fun teams so far.

Whenever I get to read a book by Brigham Vaughn, I'm always in awe how skillfully she intertwines themes of healing, trust, vulnerability, found family, and learning to love both yourself and someone else. What truly amazes me every time is her ability to create layered, but relatable characters. She also has a real talent for writing friends to lovers, and I always enjoy how she handles that shift to something more.

All in all, the tender, but also passionate romance between Thad and Graham is really worth your time.

Thad Racine whom we already met in previous books, hasn't had an easy life, as an ex-con it's been really hard finding a job but after a bit of persuasion he managed to get his twin Gavin to give him a chance. He's now the social media guy for the Boston Harriers, is good at his job and gets along with everybody. Thad's always known he was bi, never made a secret of it and is a real flirty guy. People see his fun side, but he's got a loneliness he never shows and you can't help but feel for him especially when we get his side of the story about how he ended up in prison instead of Gavin.

Luckily he's found a nice friend in Graham Pennington who knows about his struggles and accepts him just the way he is. Graham is a real sweetheart, the type who made a 5 year plan and tends to stick to it. He's been having a few girlfriends but it never seems to go anywhere and lately he's a bit confused when he starts looking at Thad differently. His feelings towards Thad have changed and there's a tension between them that ends in a kiss. At first Graham tries to avoid the problem by acting as if nothing happened but of course that isn't how things work.

Once they open up to each other and find out the things they feel are mutual, they decide to go for it but keep things quiet. As we all know, secrets have a way to be discovered and that's what happens here too.

What I loved most about this book is that is really centers around Thad and Grahams relationship. How they grow closer, how sweet they are together and how Thad is giving Graham time to learn and not overwhelm him. Graham from his side is there for Thad when he's anxious, to assure him that he wasn't going anywhere, that he had his back.

Of course there was also the usual banter between the guys of the team. Tanner and Jesse were their usual playful self, Connor was the concerned captain and Crawford.... well, I sure hope he'll be Brigham's next main character because if there's one person I'm curious about it's him.

DELAYED PENALTY - BRIGHAM VAUGHN

This is Book 4 in the Scoring Chances series, and while it can be read as a standalone it’s nice to know the background of the Boston Harriers world.

Thad and Graham have been hanging out and enjoying a casual friendship, and while they each have other things going on in their lives, there is still that need they both feel to spend time together.

Thad’s twin brother Gavin is the GM of the Harriers and warned Thad previously if he dated anyone from the team he would be fired from his job in their social media department and he tried his best to adhere to what Gavin said, but Graham made him feel things he had never experienced and he was willing to take a chance to see where this relationship was going.

Graham was discovering he was attracted to Thad and couldn’t get him off his mind even when they were apart. When he decides to explore the feelings he was having for Thad, they agreed to keep it a secret, which added to the hot factor, until they both agreed their feelings were too important to hide from everyone.

Gavin was highly upset when he found out Thad was dating Graham, but their face off over the secret romance also revealed a lot more about how far Thad’s protection went in helping Gavin keep from ruining his hockey career before it got started, and the brothers bond was finally re-established.

Graham and Thad share an emotional journey as they both navigate their new feelings for each other and the changes this brings to their lives. But when you find true love, it is worth it.

There are a lot of wonderful characters from previous books in this series and others, and Brigham writes from the heart and really engages her readers from the first page. All of Brigham Vaughn’s books are enjoyable and must reads, definitely worth your time!

4 stars.

Thad works for the social media department for a professional hockey team. A job that he got when he sort of (or completely) strong-armed his brother, who is the GM for the team. As someone who has served jail time, Thad finds it harder than a lot of people to find jobs, and when the start up that hired him went up in flames, Thad is desperate to find a job, and one of the conditions of it is that he be completely well behaved. Graham is one of the star players for the team and he has a plan as to how he wants his life to go. That picture doesn't include getting feelings for Thad. However, as the two spend more and more time together and get to know one another better, as the friendship deepens, they have to decide what to do about everything.

This is one of the rare books that actually benefited from me not reviewing it right away. Normally I downgrade my rating if I change it at all after I've thought about things, but I actually raised it from a 3.5 to 4 star with no reservations. I think the reason is that I wasn't completely invested in the relationship with Thad and Graham while I was reading it, but the more I thought about it afterward, the more I came to like it and appreciate how they were with each other. I mean, I still see Graham completely as a golden retriever, with all the personality of one, but I think it is what Thad needs. He needs someone who is good and friendly and kind of bland to offset all his sharp edges and prickly points. I liked the rest of the team in this one; I kind of felt like they were missing from the previous two books, especially Jesse and Connor. (I know, I know. Mickey actually lived with Tanner so there were lots of teammates around, but they just didn't feel as involved.) In this book, the team actually started to feel like a team, with friendships and lines connecting them.

A Slow-Burn Hockey Romance With Heart, Heat, and Heavy Stakes

★★★★☆ | 🌶️🌶️🌶️ | Tropes: Friends-to-Lovers, GFY/Bi-Discovery, Hockey Romance, Forbidden Workplace, Twins Reconnected

Delayed Penalty hits that perfect blend of emotional depth, character growth, and swoony hockey romance that keeps the Scoring Chances series so addictive.

Thad Racine is the kind of MMC who grabs you by the heart immediately. A former inmate trying to rebuild his life, he’s raw, steady, and painfully aware of the rules: no hooking up with anyone connected to the team. He finally has stability, a job he’s good at, and the first real shot at reconnecting with his twin brother. The stakes for him are sky-high—and every feeling he develops for Graham threatens all of it.

Graham Pennington is the golden boy forward who looks like he has it all together… until he absolutely doesn’t. His girlfriend track record is a disaster, his five-year plan keeps falling apart, and one shocking, electric kiss with Thad forces him to question everything he thought he knew about himself. His longing, confusion, and slow, tender unraveling make him so easy to root for.

The chemistry between Thad and Graham builds beautifully—slow-burn but intense, sweet but charged, cautious but threaded with real heat. Their fears feel real. Their choices have weight. And the forbidden aspect (GM’s twin + no-fraternization rule) adds a constant, delicious tension.

The emotional payoff is worth every step of the journey. It’s heartfelt, vulnerable, and built on learning who you are—even when it terrifies you.

If you love hockey romance with grit, growth, and characters who earn every inch of their happily-ever-after, this one is absolutely worth the read.

I’ve been so excited for Thad’s story since we learned more about him and Gavin during Gavin’s book! Plus the little sneak peek we saw in the previous book about Thad and Graham. Now their story has arrived! Thad hasn’t had it easy in a long time, and when he comes to work for the social media team for the Harriers, he hopes not only to have a fresh start but to reconnect with his brother. But the beginning wasn’t easy and one person who noticed that especially? Graham. One of the guys on the team who held out a hand to Thad and soon they found themselves becoming friends. And it was great for a while. Until they kissed. Graham thought he had a plan he would follow but Thad has thrown it out the window. They spend the summer apart after that kiss but coming back Graham has realized a lot of things. And the most important? He wants to be with Thad. Thad has never had a serious relationship and didn’t realize it was something he could need or want until Graham. But he wants to try. For now, they’ll keep this blooming relationship between them as they figure out how to navigate the unfamiliar together, but there is no doubt what these two feel for one another. As long as they give themselves a chance to explore it. I really loved their story! I loved getting Thad’s point of view and really understanding what he went through and his complicated relationship with this brother. This was such a big step in his healing and he more than deserves some happiness, especially with Graham! Overall, another great book in this series. And with a few possible hints of future stories, I can’t wait to see who is next!

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Thad and Graham - we finally have their story and also Thad's side of what we read about in Body Check. You gain the most from this book if you read Body Check first.

It's a bi-awakening, age gap, bit of forbidden romance with two great characters.

Starting as friends, I like how Thad and Graham build a solid foundation until a kiss derails it and they struggle to find back to their easy friendship because both know that there is more but there shouldn't be a future for them.

Both have issues, Graham feels he needs to have a solid life plan or at least a solid 5 year plan and Thad's vision is to finally come to a successful life after prison, dead end jobs and struggle.
A romance is the last thing both want but they both need it.

Both men really develop over the story, Graham is loosening up, embracing himself and being happy. Thad is more complex, he has not only to work through 10 years in prison which still leaves emotional scars, but also the still problematic relationship with Gavin.
What I love is how Graham is there to support and encourage Thad, even when he feels there is something Thad is not saying.

The part of the story between Gavin and Thad are something I struggled with, we see a lot more of why Gavin behaved like he did and I can see Thad's reasoning but I felt it was all a bit too easy. While their parents are anothe issue, I just couldn't see how Thad made his decision without any second thought and support.

Like in the other books, this one also has an amazing group of secondary characters and teammates.

There are hints for more teammates and I hope we get more stories from the Harriers.

“He needed something to hold on to, something to anchor him because he felt so lightheaded. His head spun and he still didn’t have enough oxygen.”

Delayed Penalty by Brigham Vaughn is the fourth book in the Scoring Chances series. I’ve been waiting for Thad’s story since he first appeared in Gavin’s book Body Check, and I’m not disappointed at all.

I’ve really enjoyed Delayed Penalty and Thad is my new favourite character in the series. He’s such a complicated character carrying a lot of emotional baggage. Seeing things from his perspective made me like him even more. He just wants a real connection and a chance to rebuild his life. It’s impossible not to feel for him.

Graham is the definition of good guy and the perfect match for Thad. He’d had his life neatly planned until suddenly it isn’t. I loved how he figured his feelings for Thad in a slow, kind of awkward but totally adorable way. They were good friends who turned their friendship into something more.

The relationship between Thad and Gavin is really well portrayed and in this book we have the answers to some questions that appeared in Gavin’s book. They’ve been avoiding things for years and they finally talk them.

Thad and Graham balance each other so well, and I loved seeing both of them having their HEA.

DELAYED PENALTY is the fourth book in the Scoring Chances series. I don't think this one should be read as a standalone. I think you would miss too much history with Thad and Gavin to fully embrace where they are throughout this one.

🏒Friends to Lovers
🏒Bi Awakening
🏒Forbidden Relationship
🏒Age Gap
🏒Golden Boy/Bad Boy
🏒Redemption Arc

Thad Racine is trying to put his life back together after spending ten years in prison. He's working for the Harriers after his brother reluctantly hired him with the understanding that if he screws around with anyone in the Harriers organization he'll be fired. He isn't about to risk it when he is finally feeling some stability in his life. Thad and Graham have been friends since Graham sat down with him in the hall when he just needed a minute. Graham was there and has been there ever since. Graham is straight, or so he thinks. Something about Thad draws Graham in. One of his goals is finding love what he never expects is it to be with a man. But once their relationship is defined Graham is all in.

The relationship between Thad and Graham was so explosive and sweet. Graham would do anything to make Thad happy but Thad was so jumpy given his prison past. I loved seeing them open up with each other and be vulnerable in ways that they could never with anyone else. I love this world Brigham Vaughn created and nothing makes me happier than visiting these characters again and again.

I was given a free copy of this book to read and review for Neon Rainbow.

God bless, this story! I knew Thad’s HEA would be so incredible but Vaughn…just wow! Will write more when I can get my wits together! And yes I did read it in a day!!

Ok, my wits are gathered. I can honestly say, this is my favorite of this series, and one of my top five of all Vaughn's books. I'll be honest, I did not care for Thad when we met him in Gavin and Dakota's story but then at the end, we get a glimpse of what was possible with him. We get such an incredible portrayal of struggles with mental health (and how health insurance is so needed), a powerful look of our prison culture. Oh, and let's not forget Graham, a bit younger than Thad, but so kind, just wanting to do the right thing by his best friend, Thad. Then they realize how they feel about each other. Their chemistry blazed off the pages. Of course, we get the Boston Harriers, love them so much. When Thad and Graham finally are forced to go public (we'll talk about Gavin in a bit), the team rallies around them. The various parents' responses to all this, wanted to punch one set and wanted to hug the other. Now Gavin, he had some groveling and apologies to make to both Thad and Graham. The scene on the back patio on Halloween is so poignant between the brothers. A minor villain gets his richly deserved comeuppance, an ex- is so classy, the therapist amazing, the visitors at the end, and the set up for the next story, can't wait. Oh, and get the two bonuses, so satisfying!

I’ve been enjoying this series so much and when Thad was introduced, I was intrigued to learn more about him. His relationship with his brother Gavin isn’t straight forward and we learn more about how that came to be and why Thad did what he did (no spoilers).

Graham and Thad start out as just good friends; Graham is dating women and goes through a couple of girlfriends during the time that he begins hanging out with Thad. I love a good slow-burn romance and things simmer and then sizzle between Graham and Thad while Graham struggles with the feelings he’s having for Thad. There is a significant age-gap between the two of them but it’s not beat to death (I’m not a fan of those kinds of age-gap stories) and it’s of no concern to Graham.

This was a nice and meaty story coming in at around 116,00 words but I never felt like it dragged anywhere. The special appearance by Noah Boucher (from Bending the Rules) and his husband was really nice. I also enjoyed the teasing of the next book (for Luke Crawford and the fan who chirps him) and I can’t wait to read it!

An advanced copy of this book was provided to me at my request; my review was voluntary and not influenced by the author.

This is the 4th book în the Scoring Chances Series. I would recommend reading this series in order. This is the story of Graham Pennington and Thad Racine. Graham is a professional hockey player. He is the Harriers golden boy and alternate team captain. He has a five year plan mapped out and he plans to follow it to the letter. Thad is the twin brother of the Harrier's GM. Thad went to prison for a crime he didn't commit to save someone he loved. He is now an ex-con and working in the social media department of the Boston Harriers. He unexpected loves the job and he is quite good at it. When Graham sees him down and all alone, he offers a hand of friendship. The two become good friends. But then their is a bi-awakening. After some trepidation, a secret relationship is started. This is their story. I received a complimentary advanced review copy of this book from Neon Rainbow and I am voluntarily leaving a review. The book is very well written and easy to read. I really enjoyed seeing Thad finally get the love he deserved. I also loved how both Graham and Thad were all in on the relationship. How they fully believed in and supported each other. I really enjoyed this book. I am looking forward to the next book in this series.

ARC Review
⭐️4.5

I wasn’t expecting Graham and Thad (prior to them being obviously teased). If you had asked me to guess who would be paired and have books, I don’t think either of them would’ve been on my list, especially not together. That being said, I liked them as a pair. They had a really good dynamic even as complete opposites.
I really enjoyed Thad’s ongoing redemption, especially in the relationship with Gavin. They have a very real sibling relationship. I really appreciate that it isn’t an easy dynamic. I think the O’Shea family, in previous books, reads as this perfect family (or at least as perfect as you can get) with these close siblings but not every family has that so it’s nice to hear about the harder relationships or even the lack of relationship. Also Graham’s family is 10/10.
I won’t spoil anything but I loved the bathroom scene with Thad and Gavin. I was both getting second hand embarrassment a little bit (which isn’t hard to do for me) and was giggling at some of the internal dialogue happening.
Overall, good book. I can’t wait for the next one. The pair I thought might happen is not happening but one of them is in the next book and I honestly can’t wait. It was already teased and it’s going to be a good one!

Four stars for the romance - Graham and Thad fit nicely together and I enjoyed reading about how they moved forward. Lots of spice. Lots of likable side characters - most from the previous books. This is a bi-awakening for Graham, and also an age gap (15 years between them).

Three stars for the whole Gavin/Thad plot. I really don't understand why Thad went to prison for Gavin, I don't understand why Gavin cut him out of his life for so many years, I don't understand why Thad got so much jail time for doing so little (& wasn't he a minor at the time?). The whole thing actually made me like Gavin less. During the showdown with their parents at the end, I wasn't entirely sure that the parents were 100% wrong in their opinions. I DO think that if Gavin had admitted to the robbery at the time (& the parents had hired a competent lawyer) that he would have gotten a much more favorable outcome than Thad got. Anyhow, I guess I'm just not a fan of a character giving up 10 years of his life for something he didn't do, only for the person he sacrificed for to ignore him for years.

Still - enjoyed the book, enjoyed this series. Looking forward to the next one.

MM
Dual POV
Third Person
Hockey romance
Age gap
Bi awakening
Bi/bi
Golden retriever

Rating: 3.5/4 - I enjoyed this book but it probably isn't one that I will reread
🌶️: 3/5 - there are a handful of explicit, intimate scenes
🏒: 4/5 - there was a good amount of hockey

TLDR: Well balanced age gap with an adorkable MC

Right off the bat, I absolutely loved this age gap. There is a significant number of years between the two MCs but due to life circumstances they were very balanced. Their different backgrounds lead them to having more or less life experience in ways that really complimented each other. One of the MCs is an ex con and that seemed to be handled well, not that I have any experience there. There is a golden retriever MC who just doesn't know how not to be all in and it's freaking adorable.

Ultimately, I'd recommend this book to anyone who has read Body Check (book 2 in the series). I think having read Body Check is going to give you more understanding of one of the main characters.

Thank you to the author and Neon Rainbow Reviews for the advanced review copy of this book. My opinions are my own.

As I was reading Body Check I was curious about Thad especially when I found out what he sacrificed for Gavin.
I liked Thad from the moment he made an appearance. Thad's job in the social media department got him close to the players and over time him and Graham Pennington, one of the best players on the team became best friends.
Graham is a loveable character and even if it wasn't what he wanted, he always did what he thought was right, but when he decided to do what he wanted he was all in and he played his hockey like that as well. He was passionate, giving Thad the love that he deserved. He was Thad's biggest champion and you just knew Thad would be ok with Graham by his side.
I loved reading and getting to know how Thad did his job and about everything that happened behind the scenes. Laughing at the team camaraderie, the stick that went Tanner's way and the way he took it in his stride and I so want to know what his problem is with Leif and more is know about Crawford's chirper. I am so there for the next book.

I haven't read Gavin's book yet but.... WHY DID HE THINK THAD TOOK THE FALL FOR HIM? Him being shocked it was out of love for him makes no sense. WHY THE FUCK ELSE WOULD HE TAKE THE FALL YOU MORON? Did he give a different reason back then? Did they even talk at all after he took the fall? Kinda hate Gavin now and don't know if I care to read his book to possibly find out but fuck Gavin you're a moron. Even if Thad did lie and give a fake reason back then... how do you not know it's because he was protecting you...

Also where does all this selfish bullshit come from? He spent five years (ten but the second five years was technically his fault) for you and basically destroyed his future. He spent fourteen years working hard to make up for it too. Not sure where selfish comes in to play. (Even if he's a dickwad in Gavin's book. I feel like he's earned it.) Him almost never putting himself first or thinking about himself is one of the things he's working on in therapy. Doesn't exactly sound selfish to me
