The first comprehensive survey of Islamic philosophy from the seventh century to the present, this classic discusses Islamic thought and its effect on the cultural aspects of Muslim life. Fakhry shows how Islamic philosophy has followed from the earliest times a distinctive line of development, which gives it the unity and continuity that are the marks of the great intellectual movements of history.
Majid Fakhry is Emeritus Professor of Philosophy at Georgetown University, Washington D.C. He has been a lecturer in philosophy in Lebanon and the UK, as well as in the US. His publications include A History of Islamic Philosophy, Ethical Theories in Islam and Islamic Philosophy, Theology and Mysticism: A Short Introduction.
Not great but not bad either. Overall a dense read except some very lucid introductory parts about Averroes and Ibn Tufayl. Read on if you want to recap important historical phases in Islamic Philosophy but if you want a good insight, criticism and comments from variety of perspectives, get your hands on something like Hosseins Nasr's Encyclopedia of Islamic Philosophy.
This long, dense book provides a sweeping overview of philosophical reflection in the Muslim world, with a strong focus on Arabic and Persian sources. The majority of the book examines the development of Islamic philosophy during the Umayyad and Abbasid Caliphates, culminating with the work of Ibn Sina, Al-Ghazali, and Ibn Rushd in the High Middle Ages. A huge number of philosophers and their work are examined, with a strong emphasis on close readings of the source material.
Fakhry covers an enormous amount of ground admirably, yielding a very satisfying and balanced overview of the mainstream of Islamic philosophy, making it a much more serviceable survey than, say, Henry Corbin's eccentric History, which dwells on esoteric matters near and dear to that author's heart. This History provides a much more comprehensive overview of thinkers and their positions in the Islamic world.
I would have appreciated more high-level summary, and more of an attempt to foreground the vital contributions of some of these thinkers - it sometimes requires a great deal of focused attention to get a good sense of what is key and what is incidental in some of the philosophers under discussion.
Fakhry generally organizes his discussion by individual thinkers, and consequently it can be difficult to come away with a good sense of some of the critical movements - in particular, I have had to re-read the sections on the Mu'tazilites and Asharites several times to get them straight. I also would have liked a longer discussion of the Sufis - ibn Arabi is considered very briefly, but I didn't take much away.
Despite these criticisms, this book is an enormously learned and helpful gateway into understanding the complex and multifaceted world of Islamic philosophy. I learned an enormous amount, and would recommend it to anyone with a strong academic interest in the subject.
A great introduction into the philosophical thinking of the muslim world through the ages. And what a journey! The only limitation is its short length. Time to dig deeper and read other great philosophical works.
Al-Kindi (emphasising Aristotelianism), al-Razi (the first reat arabic Platonist) and a;-Farabi (the neo-Platonist of even greater renown)... Andronicus's helping Augustus to move the works of Aristotle and others from Alexandria to Rome, the subsequent rise of Christianity forcing education around reason to Baghdad... the education is boundless. One must immerse themselves in the book to be sure of truly knowing or retaining anything. Am loving it presently, though it is definitely hard going! Need some fiction!
