Traditional masculinity is under attack in today’s society. Current cultural messages often portray masculinity negatively, or seek to emasculate men by ridiculing them when they act in traditional male roles. Some historically masculine traits, such as emotional repression, assertiveness, self-reliance, risk-taking, physical toughness, and competitiveness have come to be considered by some as toxic. This book is not a call to return to traditional masculinity, but rather a resource to help men recognize the changing role of men in today’s society, and to help them chart a way forward as they define for themselves what it means to be a man.
This is an invitation for you to arise from the dust and “Be Men” (2 Nephi 1:21) and answer for yourself what it means to be a man in the latter days. Use this book to guide you through a year-long review of masculinity as you study, ponder, and learn by the Spirit, how to “become men of understanding” (Mosiah 1:2). Become a man who is valued, necessary, and respected—A man who worthily fulfills his divinely appointed roles to provide, preside, and protect (The A Proclamation to the World), and is able to stand as an equal partner with a covenant keeping woman to fulfill their eternal purposes together.
