I Am Not a Vampire

Rate this book
Being a teenager bites—literally. When a classmate develops a thirst for blood, one girl must confront her secret supernatural past before things turn deadly. Fans counting down the days to the Buffy the Vampire reboot will sink their teeth into this dark and hilarious YA debut.

Her past is back for blood.

My goals for senior year were simple:
Find a prom dress I don’t hate
Spend as much time as possible with my amazing boyfriend Max (and my even more amazing best friend Sarita)
Maybe try not to flunk history class

My plans did NOT include:
Babysitting a newborn vampire—who also happens to be Max’s annoying (and annoyingly cute) buddy Ezra
Fighting off my ex-boyfriend—who did I mention is immortal?
And generally worrying about death and blood and mayhem

Turning human was supposed to mean finally getting a second chance at a normal life. But ever since moving to Sunrise Harbor, Florida, nothing has been normal. What’s worse is I actually made friends here. And when my dark past threatens to take it all away, well, being mortal totally sucks.

Award-winning author Darcy Miller makes her YA debut in this wise-cracking and witty entry that brings new blood to your favorite vampire tropes.

3.75⭐️ This was really cute! I think the right teen readers are absolutely going to eat this one up. It was quirky, engaging, and well written while still managing to bring some depth beneath the fun premise.

I was grateful to receive the audiobook ALC through the PRH Audio Influencer Program as well as a complimentary finished copy through the Get Underlined Influencer Program, which gave me the chance to do an immersion read.

I had actually started this on audio a day before the physical copy opportunity came to me so I pressed pause until it arrived. Once it arrived I decided to restart the book and experience it immersively and I’m really glad I did because I found myself far more engaged the second time around. As an adult who genuinely enjoys YA fiction, it’s always especially fun when a book transports you back to when you were the target audience yourself, and this absolutely gave me strong “Buffy” vibes in the best way.

This is definitely geared toward older teens, but with some adult support around a few themes, I could see a wide range of teen readers enjoying it. There is a brief touch of ableism surrounding jokes about mental health diagnoses that I didn’t love, but it was fleeting and ultimately didn’t significantly impact my overall enjoyment.

There were also a few inconsistencies that had me raising an eyebrow, but if you don’t dig too deeply into the logistics, this is an enjoyable genre-blending horror romcom romp.

Lastly, Jennifer McCool did a wonderful job with the narration. She sounded age appropriate for both the characters and intended audience while keeping the listener engaged throughout. I could absolutely see this being a great addition to a school library.

Thank you to netgalley and the publisher for this e-ARC in exchange for an honest review!

Did you know you can finish a book super speedily if you're stuck in a car for 16 hours? Well, now you know.

If you like Disney channel shows, and very specifically if you enjoyed My Babysitter's a Vampire, I think you'll very much enjoy this book, because that's exactly why I enjoyed it. Still setting it as a 3 star because I don't think I can call it great even if it genuinely took me back to my Disney Channel watching days. I think another part of why I can't call it great is because if I thought too hard on this book, I'd probably find a lot of things that I was meh about. But I'm choosing to live in the fun-ness of this book.

I also have an intense bias where the antagonist has a strong desire for the protagonist (a 'love' for them, wanting their power, whatever it may be), so this also just really appealed to me there. Lily overall was a good character, with an interesting role both in the story and overall in the world, leaving me with multiple questions about her.

The ending definitely set up for a sequel. I'm not 100% sure if I'll read it or not, but I am intrigued, so I might pick it up, especially if I spot it on Netgalley 🤣👀

(This review feels so short and nothing, but it really does just boil down to this book scratching a "My Babysitter is a Vampire" itch 🤣)

"It's going to be okay, dude," Max says, helping Ezra to his feet. "You're going to be fine."

Max is wrong.

Ezra is never going to be fine again.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I LOVE a good vampire story and mix that with senior year of high school when college apps should be your biggest concern and we've got the Twilight/Vampire Diaries story of my nostalgic dreams - I AM NOT A VAMPIRE (ANYMORE) by Darcy Miller.

I had such a fun time with this story. It's fast-paced, features a tight friend group, and some vampires and witches thrown into the mix.

This book is YA, which I almost always enjoy picking up, but may read on the younger side - this story feels campy & cheesy at times and I think that added to that CW nostalgia!!!! But may not work for some older readers.

Honestly, this book was such a great time and may have gotten me out of a reading slump thanks to its quick and exciting energy!

Definitely recommend picking this one up!

Thanks to Underlined for my copy for review - out now!

This was fun and cute, giving off major Buffy vibes. Sarita, the “Willow” of the group, was my favorite character. I wish we could have gotten a little more of her interacting with her crush Astrid. They were adorable together! I also found Ezra, who felt like the “Oz” of the group, lovable. Cassius was cocky, creepy and possessive and felt like a worthy foe. I didn’t care for Max though, who was clearly the “Riley” of the group. Having him be in peril didn’t work well for me since I kept finding myself thinking, “Maybe it’d be best to just let the vampires eat him.”

Lily was reasonably likable, though I had to suspend my disbelief that she’d previously been a vampire because she seemed naive even for a regular teenager, let alone one who’d been a vampire for over a century before recently returning to being human. I would have been more plausible to me if she’d only spent a few days, weeks, months, or even a year as a vampire. Perhaps, like Twilight, vampires are meant to stay developmentally frozen at the age of when they were turned, but I often wished Lily would be a little quicker on the uptake. Especially when it came to the identity of who’d turned Ezra, which was fairly obvious.

I also found it difficult to believe that anyone who’d roamed the earth as long as Lily had would be romantically interested in not only one, but two teenage boys. What would they possibly have in common with each other? Though, to be fair, that’s a common trope in vampire stories, one that baffles me every time, so that’s hardly a unique issue with this specific book.

Most of the plot was on the predictable side, though not necessarily in a disappointing way, but there was one major twist toward the middle of the book that took me completely by surprise.

Overall, I’d recommend this to lovers of YA vampire books and anyone who was looking forward to the Buffy reboot before it go t cancelled and needs a new way to get their vampire fix.

I received an advanced copy from the publisher and am voluntarily leaving this review.

Thank you NetGalley, Penguin Random House, and Darcy Miller of the eArc copy of "I Am Not a Vampire (Anymore)" in exchange for an honest review.

4.75 Stars

Normally, when I'm told a book is something for fans of or similar to (*Insert popular thing here*) that book is the furthest thing from any of those. Darcy Miller delivered on exactly what this book said it was going to be and for who.

I love this book. I love this book and I can not wait for more to come. This book made me feel like I was a teen again, sitting in the school library, devouring yet another fun and enjoyable vampire novel. I could sense the influence of Buffy The Vampire Slayer, The Last Vampire (Thirst), Night World, The Vampire Diaries, The Vampire Chronicles, The Drake Chronicles, Jessica's Guide, and so many many more within this book. Honestly, I could go on for days. Miller was able to capture their essence and give little heads nods while maintaining complete originality.

"I Am Not a Vampire (Anymore)" is a book that follows ex-vampire Lily in her attempt to live a normal life. That is until her boyfriends bestie turns vampire. She not only has to teach him how to survive, but also deal with her dark past hunting her down. Lily, Ezra, Max, and Sarita get to band together in a witty mesh of dialogue to save each other.

When I say I loved this book, I really do mean it. I can not wait for publishing so that I can re-read it over and over again. I absolutely loved the characters, their interactions, and the dialogue. While I do love the fast paced nature of the book, I do wish it would have been longer. I wish I could have spent more time with each character and in the city of Sunrise Harbor. That's just me being selfish though because this book yanked me in and I wasn't ready to leave.

June 2026 can't come soon enough.

I'M NOT A VAMPIRE (ANYMORE) by Darcy Miller (June 9, 2026)

Thank you Netgalley, GetUnderlined, and Delacorte for the earc

When Lily's boyfriend's best friend starts acting strange, she realizes he's a vampire. Pulled back into the world she left, she's left babysitting him as they work to fend off her ex-boyfriend who also happens to be a vampire while trying to survive being a human in high school.
I'M NOT A VAMPIRE (ANYMORE) is a YA supernatural thriller. I'M NOT A VAMPIRE (ANYMORE) is an easy read. Honestly, it's one of those books where I didn't feel like I was reading. The words flowed nicely, and the characters, for the most part, were likeable. These are the kinds of characters you can't help but root for. Especially Lily because after everything she had been through, she deserved some peace. I've never read a book where the main character---or any character for that matter---was a human turned vampire turned back to human, which made this more interesting because we're always seeing human to vampire and not the other way around.
There were a lot of twists and additions that seemed to come out of nowhere, especially in the beginning. But, Miller was able to explain those and blend them seamlessly in a way that made them make sense. This did end abruptly, the last chapter leaving a lot of things open and unsaid. I do think an epilogue would have been nice, or perhaps a sequel to really wrap things up. Other than that, this fast-paced read was well-written and intriguing with just the right amount of supernatural meets fantasy meets thills.

I Am Not a Vampire (Anymore) is a fun mix of horror and comedy for an older teen audience. The book follows Lily, a teenage ex-vampire that desperately wants to live a normal human life but that goal is thrown off when her boyfriend’s best friend is suddenly turned into a vampire. The lore behind the vampires and witches in this book felt straightforward and easy to follow. While it starts off a little slow about a third of the way through the pace really picks up and it was easy to fly through it.

I will say this book takes place in the modern day, the characters have cell phones and social media, but sometimes the way the characters spoke and the pop culture references they made caused it to feel like a story in a different time. Which would make sense if it was just coming from the ex-vampire character, but it is coming from the regular high school characters as well. Additionally, as someone that lives near the area this story is meant to take place, there’s a scene taking place in a basement in St. Augustine that threw me off completely (The city is barely 8 feet above sea level and floods every year, there are no basements.).

Overall I did enjoy this! I think teens will find it to be a fun, easy read. I think Miller ended it in a way that leaves it nicely open for any future books with these characters. I can see it hitting with fans of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and The Vampire Diaries.

🧛💗 I Am Not A Vampire (Anymore) ARC Review 💗🧛

Thank you so much to Darcy Miller and Random House publishing for the opportunity to read and review this book!

I Am Not a Vampire (Anymore) is a standalone YA Urban Fantasy novel. As a vampire, Lily was doomed to live her life in the darkness, until one day she finds a way to turn back into a human teenager. Now human again, she’s moved to Florida but her senior year has been anything but normal. Instead of boring & predictable, she finds herself surrounded by mayhem, blood and vampires. Will she be able to leave her dark past behind her and live a normal life? Or will her senior year be more deadly than she ever imagined?

This was such a fun read! This book was such a fun interpretation of traditional vampire lore and I really enjoyed Lily. She was strong and independent, and i enjoyed her growth in this book. Ezra was absolutely adorable and a perfect match for her. I did find myself wanting some of his PoV in this book, but otherwise this was a fun read

Overall this was a fun four star read! I enjoyed these characters, their story, and the unique twist on vampire mythology. This book does have some darker elements, so please check triggers if you’re sensitive. While this book does have a romantic subplot, there was only YA levels of on page spice, so overall one flame for spice

If you’re a fan of YA fantasy with engaging characters, an engaging story and bun banter, then absolutely pick this one up!

This book was everything I wanted it to be!! It's a YA paranormal romance, and it was SO much fun!

Lily just wanted a normal life until her boyfriend's best friend, Ezra, gets turned into a vampire. Now she's helping him adjust at the same time her dark past has come back to haunt her.

I love a good vampire book and this one sounded so intriguing by the title alone. It had a lot of familiar vampire tropes, yet also felt like a refreshing take, it was clear that the author is a big fan of vampire fiction.

There was no time wasted getting into the story, and I was so hooked from the jump that I finished it in just two days. There was a decent amount of action and suspense, but cut with lots of humour so it never felt too intense. I loved all the characters and the bit of romance sprinkled in.

Definitely some Buffy vibes, but geared more toward a younger audience. I'd recommend this to teens and adults that are into vampires, and coming of age stories. So fun!!

Lily is putting off decisions about after high school, but she's probably going to just follow her boyfriend, Max, where-ever he goes after they graduate. But then Max's best friend Ezra gets sick, but not just any sick. Ezra is actually dying and becoming a vampire. Lily knows, because she used to be a vampire. Now she has to teach Ezra how to be a vampire while hiding her past from Max and her bestie, Sarita - oh, and making sure her past hasn't caught up to her.
Because it turns out her ex-boyfriend has tracked her down.

Add in some witches who are vampire hunters, because why not, a love triangle and shake it all up.

I really enjoyed reading this book, I thought the premise was really interesting. There were several "plot twists" that you saw coming, but it was still really engaging and fun.

I LOVED this YA book. I'm so glad to have gotten this review copy because it wasn't on my radar at all and it's definitely one of the top books I've read this year! After being a vampire for over a century, Lily breaks her curse and is determined to live a normal teenage girl life.

Such a fun concept, and it's super clear how much the author loves vampire fiction! You can see a lot of influence from many different vampire stories. I really like vampire fiction too and I haven't read any since I was a teenager so this was really nice. This book isn't too scary but it does deal with death of course, and there's a few scary, violent scenes.

I definitely would recommend this to teens and adults who are into vampire stories and coming of age!

Thanks to penguin teen canada for the advanced copy!

A big thanks to Netgaey and Darcy Miller for the opportunity to read this ARC in exchange for my opinion.
Lily cannot seem to stay away from the supernatural and that's the basis for this story. As the title implies, Lily is not a vampire, but she used to be before she became human again but once again she will have to pull on her skills and teach her boyfriends best friend, Ezra turned and its on her to show him the ropes. Throw in a villain in the form of Lily's ex and you have a solid story with a great pace, wonderful character development and a very original premise. This book did give me Buffy vibes times which I thoroughly enjoyed. This is a YA debut novel and I think anyone who loves vampire books like me should definitely pick it up!!

"I Am Not a Vampire (Anymore)" by Darcy Miller is a funny and fresh, YA vampire story. You will be pleasantly surprised by the plot and writing. This was a breath of fresh air.
I have a weakness for the horror genre because of how creative the stories are. This novel took the cake. The main character of Miller's novel, has to balance being a teenager, along with being caught up in a half a centuries worth drama between vampires and witches. The cherry on the pie of all this nonsense, is that one of her friends is turned into a vampire. Now, she has to help him get adjusted to his new life. She would know how, since she used to be one.
I am so glad I found this book. It combined some of life's greatest gifts, humor and horror. You won't be able to put it down.

thank you underlined for sending me an early copy of this book in return for an honest review!! 💞

this book was so much fun and so easy to read. it follows a former vampire trying to live a normal high school life in a small town in Florida but some things happen 😆! all the characters were so likable, and all the romance sub-plots were so cute!! this is a perfect YA book suited for teenagers, and I honestly think even adults can enjoy it! the amount of times I laughed in this book because even though they were in high stress, intense battle like scenes, it felt so unserious and light!! highly recommend for a cute little fun time fighting vampires and slaying witches, or becoming one of the two 👀

YA vampire book
Lily's goal for her senior year was to find a prom dress or maybe not fluck her classes but when one of her classmates, Erza, gets turned into a vampire. All of lily's past life as a vampire comes tumbling back to her. Turning human was supposed to be easier but she can't escape the supernatural world. Nothing will ever actually be normal.
I thought this book was super easy to read. The character are easy to root for and I found myself wanting another books in this series. Like I want more of Erza figuring out how to be a vampire.

A light, fun, hilarious YA novel about a girl who is no longer a vampire but decides to help her friend and newly turned vampire learn the ropes. This book is marketed as YA, and refreshingly actually fits in the YA category. Despite our character being a centuries old former vampire she is now a fully human high school girl and goes through all of the embarrassing, awkward moments of high school. She is snarky, loyal to her friends, and very likable as a character. Despite the light humorous tone, there are some heavier underlying themes, which the author delivers in an appropriate YA voice.

80/100 or 4.0 stars

This is a great YA horror romance and the target audience will probably have a good time. While there are some issues with the dialogue and characters (someone 150 years old would not say "like" all the time and it is beyond gross that we again have someone who mentally is 150 and dates two minors). Aside from this and suspending some disbelief on parts of the plot, the writing was engaging and the story was fun. It is a good introduction to horror/vampires without being too graphic. It is still bloody, but it is not gruesome.

If I was in high school and suddenly turned into a vampire--I'd probably go into full Edward Cullen mode. Twilight lighting and everything. I think reading this, is like a love story in a way to vampires. but like...non hot ones !

This is a fun YA debut that's perfect for summer or spooky season. Could have had some plot twists answered slightly better but all in all, a fun read.

Ok, I like it when horror and humor go hand in hand. Being a teenager is difficult even without being a former vampire. This horror/humor combo is well suited to the setting of high school . Drama and 'secrets' being at the center of all things humorous and horror filled. YA readers will enjoy this. It is a solid contribution that will help round out library or school collections of horror. Cute, dramatic, but also fairly predictable from an adult stand point. Easy read.

3.5 stars. I was able to get an arc of this book and it was pretty good. There were a few places that seemed like it slowed down enough that I thought the book was coming to an end but it wasn't. Still a pretty good book, I would recommend it if you like vampire books, not as much twilight vampires but other vampire books. all in all it was a pretty quick easy read.

The writing felt more like a middle grade trying hard to be a young adult. Gives the vibe of Saved by the bell meets My babysitter is a vampire. Lily is giving full on Mary Sue character traits. This book was not for me which sucks cause I love this cover.

This was the perfect fun, quirky YA Book.

It was very fast paced, and I read it in one sitting.

The ending left it open that it could continue as a series which I would pick up to read.

An okay teen vampire romp that leaves a bit to be desired.
There wasn't anything fundamentally wrong with the story, it had a quick pace and ok characters. But it lacked that adventure and emotional depth to really derive it home.
