Awh, ok, you know what?
This book was actually really cute,

This time, we begin with Junie B. in her classroom, dreading the upcoming ‘career day’ at her school! She doesn’t know what job she wants… but on Monday, she HAS to dress up as her dream profession!?! This day has turned into a nightmare!!

I was… impressed, honestly, with how realistic this was! Not every kid knows what job they want, and this kind of thing can certainly be stressful for a child, since they don’t know how to navigate their emotions too well. So I liked this!

After a few mishaps, Junie B. ends up playing at the playground alone. She doesn’t have anything fun to do at all… Well, besides watch the janitor paint and an ant climb a stick. However, she suddenly spots two cherry lifesavers on the ground… and pops one into her mouth. (THIS WAS SO GROSS?? It had DIRT on it?? I do know children who would do this, so I can’t say it’s unrealistic … but still. )Anyways, the janitor comes to her rescue, telling her to spit it out, because it’s still covered in germs!!! Junie B. thought that blowing on it got rid of germs (based on what her mom does, I suppose, based on a scene later in the book.) Anyways, Junie B. now feels a bit better, as she has a friend in the janitor!!

Back in class, a few different professionals visit the school to talk about their jobs… one of which being a DENTIST!!! This doesn’t go so well, as one of the kids gets floss stuck in his teeth! But, who else to come to the rescue but the janitor with a flashlight !?! With the help of the dentist, once again, the crisis is adverted!!

Heading back home in the bus, however, Junie B. is in a slump again! She STILL doesn’t know what job she wants!! The other kids, however, have some good ideas, and she claims she will be an artist, a key-holder AND a hero!! The other kids laugh at her, and Junie B. is VERY worried about the mess her mouth got her into…

Things aren’t any better at home, when Junie B.’s big mouth wakes up her new baby brother!!! But the thing is, Junie B. just wants her mother’s help! She begins to resent the baby, wishing they could send him back, despite how much she loved him before. Kids are fickle, and she’s only a kindergartener, so even if this is a little sad, it’s realistic… she’ll go back to loving her brother soon, surely! When he loses his pacifier, Junie B. helps look for it with a flashlight, and actually ends up finding it!?! In the artwork, the flashlight made a heart as her mother hugged her, and I thought this was a super cute detail. ANYWAYS after Junie B. tells her mom that she needs to wash the pacifier, not just blow on it, everything is ok again!
Well, maybe more than ok…
Because now she knows what she wants to be when she grows up!!

On Monday, every kid has fun jobs they are excited to announce. But, they aren’t quite as special as Junie B.’s!!! A job that requires keys, paint and most important of all, heroic deeds… it’s so exciting!! But, when she announces it…
Her classmates just laugh?
Why is being a janitor so funny??
Ok, ok, I can’t lie, this was ADORABLE!!! The way that the job of a ‘janitor’ is based purely on her recent experiences is so fun! She thinks of him as a hero!!

And don’t worry, everything is ok in the end!! The teacher quiets the students, and after the janitor comes in for show-and-tell, the other kids are impressed, too! All’s well that ends well!!

Such a cute book!! I really enjoyed this one, and I’d highly recommend it!!

(This book contains bullying, talk of hitting other kids (lightly) and also pinching their arms. Plus, it includes talk of bloody mouths due to losing baby teeth, and also the other kids tease her about having a crush on the old man janitor. Besides this, it also reveals that the Disney land characters are just people in costumes, if that’s something that worries you!! I’d give it an age rating of all-ages, just make sure your kid doesn’t copy children too easily!)

Junie B.’s third story sees her in a grumpity mood when her class will be having a career day when they’ll all dress up as what they wanna be when they become adults. Unfortunately she shoots off her mouth when she claims that there’s a special job that she sees as very special, but luckily she’s find it thanks to making a new friend that cheers her up.

It’s another funny and relatable where it shows kids that there are many types of jobs to be had while Junie B’s job is to be funny, loud and lovable.

There are books you read, and then there are books that read you right back cracking open a chapter of your childhood and handing it to you with a grin. Junie B. Jones and Her Big Fat Mouth, now reimagined as a full-colour graphic novel, did exactly that to me.

Here's my confession: I was seven or eight years old when I first fell headlong into the world of Junie B. Jones. Barbara Park's junior fiction series was pure joy on a page , chaotic, hilarious, and narrated by a kindergartner with absolutely zero filter. I tore through those little chapter books like they were going out of fashion. Now, thirty-something years later, I find myself sitting down with the graphic novel adaptation and laughing just as loudly. Possibly louder. My family thinks I've lost the plot. Maybe I have, but I regret nothing.

In this story, Junie B. has made one of her classic, spectacular blunders. It's Job Day in Room 9, and in a moment of pure Junie B. bravado, she's announced to her entire class that she's going to have the bestest job in the whole wide world. The only problem? She has absolutely no idea what that job is. Cue the delightful spiral of schemes, logic only a six-year-old could follow, and the very real terror of being called a fibber in front of everyone.

What makes the graphic novel format such a treat is how perfectly it suits Junie B.'s personality. She is, at her core, a visual character with all of her wild expressions, flailing arms, and dramatic eyebrows. The full-colour illustrations bring the chaos of Room 9 to life in a way that feels both fresh and deeply familiar. Reading it, I kept catching echoes of that little girl who used to prop up her chapter book on the dinner table, giggling at the same jokes that still land today.

These graphic novel adaptations are a wonderful bridge between generations. For parents and older readers, they're a nostalgia hit of the best kind. For a new generation of young readers, they're a gateway into one of the most beloved children's series of all time. Either way, Junie B. Jones is back, and her big fat mouth has never been more welcome.
