Summoner Summer Camp

Rate this book
Magic is real, and Reggie Hickson just got invited to be a wizard school summer camp transfer.

Reggie was a self-made businessman who'd pulled himself and his oddball dad out of poverty through sheer determination and the glory of YouTube tutorials. Pretty impressive, honestly. That was until a three-inch tall sprite emerged from his coffee mug and told him he was a wizard. Scratch that—a warlock. Apparently there's a difference, and that difference involves stuff we probably shouldn't go into in this good Christian blurb.

Now he's at Thistlewick School of Wizardcraft and Witchery, which happens to be in a magical land called Everafter. Much to his dismay, Everafter has a problem; specifically, a reproduction problem. Thus, he finds himself surrounded by monster girl co-eds who happen to be conveniently inexperienced with boys. First, he meets Tizzy, an adorable lisping jackalope girl, but she's just the first of many monster cuties that he ends up entangled with. Sphinxes, valkyries, fairies, oh my! It's a good thing stamina is one of Reggie's "warlocky" strengths.

Oh, and he has less than a week to brush up on two years of magical curriculum and pass the placement exam or he'll be held back when the semester starts while his new lady friends move on to their third year without him.

No pressure or anything.

Summoner Summer Camp is a progression-filled romp about a guy trying to ace his exams while his overeager cabinmates treat him like a walking mana dispenser. Do not read while in line at the bank.

I made it through the first 8 chapters before I decided I would DNF this book. The MC nor the various LIs interest me.

The MC is a guy living on earth, helping support his dad, when he's informed out of nowhere that he can become a magic user and attend a special school. This is because of his genius IQ, even though he dropped out of school to get a GED. The school is 80% female, and he's going to attend summer school with all the partial failure students so he can pass his end of 2nd year tests and move into the 3rd year classes. So he's going to cram 2 years of college into a single summer, while having sex with his roommates/LIs.

The LIs leave a LOT to be desired. First they are all virgins, having never even seen a male member before. A few of them talk a lot of talk, but then clam up and run away when propositioned. The very first one is the one from the cover, a jackelope that has a lisp that the MC thinks is adorable. The voice acting for an audio book is going to be a nightmare to listen to if the voice actress tries to duplicate that. Then there's the oversexed sphinx that's all talk. The musclebound valkyrie that is flustered at seeing his nude chest. This looks like it's going to be a train wreck of girls (because that's what they act like, not women) who know nothing of dating, romance, or even how men and women have sex.

Life is too short to read about characters you just don't like.

That book was dumb as hell but annoyingly funny and still somehow only managed to cover FOUR DAYS. Ridiculous.

It's finally day three. This book is ridiculous. I can't stop laughing at the stupid euphemisms OR being mad at all the references to HP. I'm gonna have a stroke.

It's now actually day 2, and our super cool, hunky, super smart main character has taken it upon himself to bless the poor women of his cabin with his tutoring skills. They've also now turned into jealous attention seekers.

It's fucking Day 1 (2? what is time) and they girls are talking about doing the equivalent of getting married when ole boy was talking about dating. Also, losing virginity mentioned as needing to be a "special experience", so chug your drinks.

Well I'm a third of the way in, might as well keep on.

The main character has been introduced. He's a shameless Gary Stu self-insert character. It's turning into "What if I was cool and went to Hogwarts" fan fiction. Honestly I wouldn't be surprised if this came straight from Fanfiction.net (does that site still exist? I'm old).

It references fucking Moaning Myrtle from Harry Potter on the first page of the prologue and I almost reflexively chucked it in the bin. I like to give 50 pages of leeway though, but it's not looking good with the REST of the Harry Potter references.

(I have nothing against Harry Potter, but holy shit reference something else in your magic school books)

This is a DNF on my end. Got incredibly, incredibly boring and repetitive. MC is unironically a Gary Stu, like, literally. Genius IQ masters magic in a week compared to the 100+ year old love interests who have lived with magic their entire lives. He goes into a forest to capture summons and accidentally captures a really strong creature that even year 3 students struggle with on a complete WHIM.

The love interests are about what you'd expect from a teenager who has never spoken to a woman, read a ton of porn and decided that a womans personality always devolves into sex. There are 4 love interests by the point I'm dropping this and their personalities are.

Talkative Ditzy Rabbit + Nymphomaniac
Strong Warrior wants to be treated like a normal girl + Nymphomaniac
Fairy (honestly I can't remember her personality) + Nymphomaniac
Riddler + Confident till confronted + Nymphomaniac (constantly makes riddles based around sex because she's a Sphinx monster girl because of course.)

To be entirely honest, I don't mind characters being a bit more sex eager but when every single chapter, every single conversation, every single sentence always has to include a reference to sex or anatomy or entire sections of scenes dedicated to summoning 'sauce' and drinking it. It goes a bit far. It is possible to write characters in Haremlits having conversations without bringing up these types of topic.

Edit: I read like. Literally 2 more pages and got immediately infuriated. Long story short, one of the teachers approaches, asks for his help, says she needs someone who knows the books back to front and is adaptable. Nevermind that he has known of magic for, at this point little over a week and a half and has interacted with this teacher exactly once within the 3 days he has been at this Summer camp. There has literally been no chance for her to learn that he knows everything back to front nor how adaptable he is. This is why he's called a Gary Stu. He has done NOTHING to earn this trust.

Reddit build a story

This entire thing was written like a Harry Potter fan fiction that people from Reddit contributed to…

Hmm let’s see, we have a genius IQ kid, who didn’t finish high school, apparently every business he touches turns to gold, but still apparently eats expired canned food with his dad? He has a photographic memory, more magical power than anyone else, and he learns 2 years worth of curriculum in a month by himself. From knowing nothing about magic to basically being valedictorian caliber with no training at all.

This is such a blatant harry potter ripoff that it’s insane, the school for “wizardcraft and witchery”, the giant castle school, and we even have the half giant groundskeeper.

Also every person at this school is supposed to be AT LEAST 100+ years old, but they all act like idiotic teenagers, well tweens really. The teachers are apparently clueless about everything, and get students to do their jobs.

Honestly, I could rant about this all night but it won’t change anything. This was just pathetic. If you want to read about the MCs balls being cradled by a broom then go for it, but I’m done with this series.

Good book with great characters

Disclaimer: I was a beta reader for this book.

Reggie is a protagonist that has a reasonable take at what an ambitious kid would do when confronted with the existence of magic and told magic college is for you. As in the cast of cute cabin mates and an overarching mystery for someone born outside of the tragic history currently surrounding the world of magic and it becomes apparent what must be done and I can't wait to read about the next adventures.

Fan service, but in a good way

If this were an anime, I think most of the book would be classified as fan service. Usually such stories are vain and shallow, with a bevy of silly girls who throw themselves at our heroic MC just because of his uber-manly maleness. Don’t get me wrong, that definitely happens a lot in this story. But instead of taking advantage of the situation, Reggie pushes back. He wants to slow down, build some connection, and create some legitimate intimacy before going too far. It was a welcome change from the usual male fantasy romp.

Great book, not so great ending

I really liked this book. It was a fun, light-hearted read, with a decent amount of spice. The problem is that the ending was a bit, well, abrupt. I understand why it was placed there, but it still seemed to be just there.

Honestly, the ending issue is more of a me thing, but it will probably annoy some other people as well.

FYI, the epilogue was one of the cutest things i've read in a long time.

Highly recommended.

A Fun Read!

This story brings you in with a wink to some familiar themes, though it takes you in quite a different direction.
I enjoyed the connections that the MC makes with the characters. More than just a standard, "action action VICTORY ", approach to a fantasy tale.
Certainly worth the read!

Interesting new series

I really like this one, it's a little heavy on the funny vulger humor but it works well with our cast of characters. My hope is we get a little more deep connections in the next one and it does seem like we're headed that way from the ending of the book. I will eagerly wait for the next one.

Fun read

This is a great read. It was light and fun for the material covered the characters are easy to relate to and understand the feeling that they are having. Yet I think that they are not going to like what is coming.. I can't wait to read book no.2. I am so looking forward to it.
