I help people who are losing control. That’s my job, and I do it well.
I don’t get attached. I don’t cross lines. And I always keep a level head.
But when I'm dropped a lost cause, the pressure starts building—problems stacking, restraint wearing thin, discipline stretched until it’s the only thing keeping everything from imploding.
And that's when Dr. Jenna Williams walks into my life.
She disrupts my fragile psyche, penetrating the careful order I’ve built to keep my own chaos contained. I recognize the warning signs immediately. I’ve seen them in others too many times to mistake them now.
I genuinely feel bad giving this rating, but I really can’t be more generous. Like the title, this book was pure chaos. After giving The Wrong Drive five stars (because I absolutely loved it!!), I went into this one with pretty high expectations. Unfortunately, this book just couldn’t live up to them.
Up until about the 50% mark, I was actually really enjoying this book. The story had me hooked and I kept wanting to pick it back up. Everything felt promising. But then.. what the hellie happened??? Especially the last 20% felt like everything was thrown in at once, and it honestly didn’t work for me. It felt overwhelming in the worst way, rushed, and messy. It pains me to say that I really didn’t like it. The execution of this story and the characters really missed the mark for me.
That said, despite all of this, I’m still very curious about the next book coming out in April. Clearly, something about this world still has its grip on me and I really want to know more about these broken characters.
Pure Chaos by Annie Wild lives up to its name in every possible way. This book opens dark and brutal, immediately dropping you into Calvin’s POV as he’s knee-deep in bodies, moral rot, and secrets that refuse to stay buried. He’s a former Marine turned reluctant cleanup man, struggling with where he falls on the line between good and evil—and that internal conflict bleeds into every decision he makes. The atmosphere is heavy, gritty, and tense right from page one. On the other side, we meet Jenna, who is absolutely relentless. Her brother Cade has gone AWOL, and she’s burned through her savings, her resources, and her sanity trying to find him. When official channels fail her, she does what she has to do—lying, infiltrating, pretending to be someone she’s not—to get closer to the truth. Her dedication is intense, reckless, and honestly heartbreaking. The moment Jenna and Calvin’s worlds collide? Pure combustible chaos. Their dynamic is built on suspicion, power imbalance, and undeniable attraction. Calvin doesn’t trust her for a second—and for good reason—but that tension only makes every interaction sharper. Jenna agreeing to tutor his daughter while secretly searching for her brother adds a delicious layer of danger, especially knowing how much Calvin is already watching her. What really elevates this book is how every character is morally gray. No one is clean. No one is innocent. Even the choices that feel justified come with consequences. The suspense never lets up, and just when you think you know where the story is heading, it swerves. And yes—the spice is spicy. It’s intense, messy, emotionally charged, and completely fitting for the story. It never feels random; it always pushes the tension and power struggle forward. Overall, Pure Chaos is dark romance done right: ✔ gritty ✔ emotionally unhinged ✔ morally twisted ✔ high-stakes obsession ✔ and absolutely addictive If you like your romances dangerous, complicated, and dripping with tension, this one will own your soul.

If you read The Wrong Drive (Book 1) and loved the "touch her and die" energy, you’ll find plenty of that DNA here. Pure Chaos lives up to its name, it is messy, volatile, and high-octane. We dive back into the Dark Valor world, shifting focus to the next brother in the lineup.
Annie Wild knows how to write a morally gray man who would burn the world down for his girl. The spice is there, the tension is thick, and the banter had me chuckling in the darker moments.
The hero’s possessiveness borders on unhinged (in the best way), and the way he handles the heroine’s "chaos" was the highlight of the book for me.
I suffered a bit from "Middle Book Syndrome." While the chemistry was fire, the plot felt like it was spinning its wheels to set up Cade (Book 3) rather than resolving its own conflicts.
The pacing was frantic, true to the title Pure Chaos, but at times it felt disjointed, leaving me wanting more grounding in the relationship before the next explosion happened.
This had me hooked! I really love Annie Wild’s writing, although there were a lottt of typos in this. I love that we were also able to see what exactly turner was up to when he was trying to better himself for Em. I literally cannot wait for Cade’s book, I feel like he might end up being my fav.
This story delivers a chilling, psychologically intense romance that blurs the line between control and obsession in the most compelling way.
The narrator’s voice is razor-sharp from the first line. He’s composed, clinical, and disturbingly self-aware. A man whose profession revolves around stabilizing those who are unraveling, he prides himself on discipline and detachment. He doesn’t cross lines. He doesn’t lose control. And he certainly doesn’t get emotionally involved.
Until he does.
When Dr. Jenna Williams enters his life, the shift is immediate—but not explosive. Instead, it’s subtle. Unsettling. The kind of slow destabilization that feels far more dangerous than an obvious spiral. What makes this dynamic so gripping is that he recognizes the warning signs. He understands the psychology of obsession. He has likely counseled others through it.
But he has never had to turn that lens on himself.
The tension in this story thrives on restraint. It’s not about chaotic outbursts; it’s about pressure building behind a carefully constructed façade. His internal monologue is where the real suspense lies—every thought measured, every reaction analyzed, every crack in his control noted and cataloged. Watching someone so disciplined begin to question his own stability creates a powerful psychological pull.
Dr. Jenna Williams isn’t just a love interest—she’s a catalyst. Her presence challenges the rigid systems he’s built to contain his own darkness. Whether she fully understands the effect she has on him remains part of the intrigue, but her impact is undeniable. She forces him into unfamiliar territory: vulnerability, desire, and the terrifying possibility of losing control.
The most compelling element is the moral tension. This isn’t a simple romance. It’s a character study of a man who knows exactly how dangerous blurred boundaries can be—and must decide whether he can trust himself not to cross them.
For readers who enjoy:
* Psychological, slow-burn tension * Morally gray male leads * Obsession threaded with self-awareness * Professional boundaries under strain * “I can handle everyone else—but not myself” energy
This story promises a dark, cerebral descent into desire and discipline. It’s unsettling in the best way—quiet, controlled, and simmering with the threat of something far more explosive beneath the surface.
OKAY LISTEN. I am about to be unwell in the best possible way.
This book? Hooked me by the throat and did not let go. Annie Wilds’ writing once again had me feral, unhinged, emotionally compromised, and questioning my life choices. Yes, there were typos—but it was an ARC and honestly?? I was too busy spiralling to care.
Calvin. Bradford. F me Sideways. That man was pulled in seventeen different directions at once and I felt every ounce of it. The tension between Bradford and Cade?? Suffocating. Brutal. Unpredictable. This is one of those stories where I genuinely had no idea where things were going—especially with Cade—and that emotional uncertainty wrecked me. Fully wrecked.
Jenna was such a real FMC. She’s not perfect, she’s trying, she’s surviving, and she’s navigating trauma the only way she knows how. Fixing the past isn’t neat or easy, and I felt that struggle. While I did wish for just a tiny bit more “getting to know you” romance between Cal and Jenna, the slow burn still hit exactly where it needed to. And when it turned spicy? Chef’s kiss. Worth. Every. Second.
Also—can we talk about how Annie let us see what Turner was up to? Watching him actively try to better himself for Em??? I loved that. It added so much depth, and now I’m this close 🤏 to rereading The Wrong Drive because the emotional callbacks were too good.
This book is: Ex-military men with trauma Morally questionable decisions Slow burn that hurts so good Emotional damage Plot twists that made my eyes go WIDE Men my therapist would sigh deeply about 😮💨
Final verdict: Bad for my sanity. Incredible for my soul. The men are feral. Marines. Walking red flags 🚩 Built for chaos 💀 And unfortunately… that says a lot about me 🫠
This genre isn’t usually my go-to, but I’ll pick it up when the plot outweighs the spice and this one absolutely delivered. There was plenty of spice in all the right places, without taking away from the overall storyline, which I really appreciated.
I do wish there had been a bit more romance and “getting to know you” between Cal and Jenna, but overall it worked well. The story kept me engaged from start to finish and was well written. I enjoyed all of the characters and am definitely looking forward to the next installment Annie is working on!
Highly recommend if you enjoy K.M. Moronova or Brynne Weaver. Annie has a very similar writing style and character dynamic, especially in this story, which follows a former Marine turned “monster” hunter alongside his fellow comrades, all battling their own demons.
Enter Bradford. A little too controlling a little too rigid.... a little too scrumptious? Yes I said it. The man is delicious. He's soft with the girls he loves but other than that don't get on his bad side. Enter Jenna. She's a little desperate... to find her brother I mean. She's getting closer but in the meantime she needs a cover to get close to the one man that might know something. The Dark Valor series gives delicious men and their unhinged desire for their, honestly definitely, unhinged women.
The bad side of this book is that the almost conclusion felt a little predictable to me and the actual conclusion felt kind of swept together. That being said this book gives what its supposed to give: a dash of spice, a heaping of intrigue, and a glimpse into some very hot, off-kilter, "touch her and die" men.
I love Annie Wild and I LOVE this series. I devoured this book in one sitting. I feel like this author is so underrated. Her books are shorter, which I love, but it's because there is no nonsense filler. Every word is written with intention and you just jump right into the story. This was so good and I didn't want it to end. I actually wish her books were longer because they are so good and I want more. If you love dark military romance, then this book and series are for you. These alpha, morally black military men have me drooling. In this story we have Cal Bradford, former marines officer and Jenna. She has been spending a long time looking for her brother who went AWOL. He spends his life running his family's Christmas Tree Farm and helping broken veteran's live in the real world. Their world's kind of collide and it gets brutal at times. Loved this!
I actually think I love this one just a tiny bit more than The Wrong Drive. Calvin Bradford. I LOVED him. I had so much sympathy for him. He was being pulled in so many different directions. The constant situations between Bradford and Cade were intense. This was one story where I truly didn't know what was going to happen with Cade. Very emotional. I liked the fmc as well. I think Jenna was navigating the best way she knew how. Trying to fix past trauma isn't always doable or easy and I felt the struggles.
All this to say, I loved this book! It goes so well with the Dark Valor series. And I've enjoyed all of it.
*This was an arc read, but all the opinions are my own. Thank you so much for letting me read this in advance of it's release. A wild ride that I, very much enjoyed!
Another great book, dare I say I loved this better then the first book?!?!! They were both so good!! So this one is ex military, but this is AFTER what happens in book one. So you get to see how Turner get better with his issues, but you get more on Bradford and Jen. There so much to unpack, I was trying to figure everything out and BAM!!! You finally learn so much I was like wide eyes throughout this whole book. I read it one day and couldn't put it down. Bradford is the one you meet at the end of The wrong drive that helps in his own way with Turner. And Jen is only trying to find her brother. Which leads her to Bradford. Honestly I need book three now because of how this one ends. I need to know what happens.
What a story. This was such a beautifully complex read in the best way. It does touch on mental illness, so definitely be mindful of your triggers going in.
Calvin and Jenna, wow. The connection between these two was everything. The slow burn was chef’s kiss, and when it finally turned spicy…. Completely worth the wait. I can’t decide which scene was my favorite.
I also loved getting little glimpses of Turner along the way… now I’m officially tempted to go back and reread The Wrong Drive.
I don't even know how to explain how much I LOVE this book 😊
Great plot. Bad for my sanity 🫠 But let's be honest—the MEN were a personal issue 😮💨
These men come with warnings and feel like they'd ruin my life, and they're also the type my therapist would sigh about—and somehow that makes it worse 😮💨
SIX stars. Without a doubt 😌
The men in question? Marines. Feral. Morally questionable. Walking red flags 🚩 Built for chaos 💀 I fear this says a lot about me 🫠
A 6☆ read. Yeah... I see the problem. I am the problem 🫣
This book was kinda pure chaos. The main leads barely interacted for the first half, and then they suddenly had sex. And more. And more. I was really bored. This felt like a set up for Cade's story more than anything, which I am interested in reading.
I first read The Wrong Drive back in Dec 2024 and LOVED it. It was one of my top 2024 reads. I reread the updated version in 2025 and loved it just as much, and was excited to see she was expanding the series. Unfortunately, this was a let down. Hoping Cade's story will be better.
Pure chaos by Annie wild 4⭐️ Another great story by Annie wild. From the beginning it catches your attention. You want to know who did what who is who. This is about Jenna trying to look for her lost brother she doing everything to find him. Even Change her life to find him. She meets Calvin owner of Christmas tree farm. Calvin helps military man at his tree farm. His like a “therapist” lol
He falls for Jenna and loses control with her something he doesn’t like his all about control
Tropes Ex military Possessive MMC Touch her and 💀 Single dad Age gap Hit man False identity
Ma'am. Ma'am?! From the jump? That's how we're starting this? Yeah, alright!
As someone who absolutely looooved The Wrong Drive, I was so giddy to get my hands on Pure Chaos. It did not disappoint! This was a strong 4.5 out of 5, I ate up Cal and Jenna's story nearly as quickly as Turner and Em's
That being said there were definitely a couple of gag-worthy instances that tested me. (Not overly graphic but enough to paint a picture).Listen, your girl has a weak stomach but she pushed through, haha!
You can bet I'll be back for the next book! Thank you again Annie Wild!
If you like a good military dark romance with so many unhinged things from your MMC this is the book for you not only does the MMC have secrets. The FMC has even more. Will she find what she’s looking for or will she find a grumpy black cat energy of a man and what she’s looking for this is my favorite author Annie Wilde she did once again an amazing job I feel like every time I read her books I get the unhinged itch scratched every time she does it she does an amazing job. I love this book was so good so unhinged and everything that I needed.
Over a year wait and Part 2 to the WRONG DRIVE did not disappoint! I was looking for Turner and Em‘s story from part one not realizing it was about additional characters, but Turner was absolutely a major role in this one as well and it was absolutely PURE CHAOS. There were two scenes in this that’s stuck out like sore thumbs and were very intense where you almost sit on the edge of your seat waiting to see what will happen… But wait can we talk about the fact that this one ends in a cliffhanger.?!!! You killing me Annie!! But I will be ok cause the next one comes out in April of this year!
I loved the was she brought Cade and Bradfords story to life here. This book touches on so many topics but has such a good plot and chemistry build up!
Cade is a bastard of a man in this one so knowing his story and seeing his backstory was cool!! Bradford is being whipped around in all the different ways just trying to help all the people he cares about when everything changes for him.
I can’t wait for people to get ahold of this! I loved it and am so excited to read more per usual from Annie!
This was an arc Copy, I was lucky enough to be chosen for! All my review is of my own opinion. Thank you for the opportunity to early read!
I had some trouble getting into this book. The first little bit was a little confusing for me but then it picked up when Jenna started tutoring Molly. I got into it and then it was all of a sudden over. Poor Jenna has blinders on when it comes to her brother. And he’s completely psycho. Then there’s crazy Cal. He’s possessive and somewhat psycho himself. I am ready for Cade’s book. I feel like it will bring the psycho out in everyone that reads it.
is there anything I wouldnt read by Annie wild 🤔... F*$k NO
This hit all the right spots the style or wrighting will draw you in the characters are well created and flows just perfectly 👌. Pure Chaos will have you deep diving into a wait umm I think I found a clue...then...boom 💣💥💢.. you get another you thought wrong. I can't wait for the next because I need answers lol
Jenna has been searching for her brother since he went AWOL, (Calvin) Bradford is a former marine and runs his family Christmas tree farm that helps veterans get back into civilian life.when their paths cross it isnt just a spark its an entire detination, and that just the beginning! Well written the story draws you in with suspense, high emotions, desires, reflection and more.
This was a really thrilling story. It was a grab you and hold on to you until it’s finished kind of story. This was intense and had me turning the pages like my fingers were on fire. This was so intense. I loved the characters, loved the action and chaos. I was on the edge of my seat throughout. I’ve only read a few bold from this author, but I’ll definitely be reading a lot more.
*3.5 The wrong drive was good, and I had high expectations I guess because this one just fell flat for me. I didn’t really feel connected to the characters and there was a lack of plot? I don’t know, I was bored.
This was a good book. I was invested in the story. I wanted to know what happened next. I did however feel the ending was a bit rushed. Overall it was a good read.
