He’s tall, dark and infernal. She’s ready to be corrupted . . .

A deliciously dark tale of Faustian bargains and seduction, Clara & the Devil is a graphic novel from the Sunday Times bestselling author of Masters of Death, Olivie Blake, and fan-favourite artist Little Chmura.

Clara thought she had the rest of her life figured out. But when an unusual tourist – tall, dark, and satanic – comes to town, Clara’s careful plans start to unravel fast. She thought she’d graduate college with the support of her best friend, Jonah. Then she’d marry her adoring boyfriend, work at her local library and settle down in her small seaside hometown. But now things seem far from simple.

And even while the stranger, who openly calls himself the devil, strikes up a situationship with Jonah, he continues to tempt Clara with reckless talk of power, ambition, and lust. Over the course of one sultry summer, tensions between Clara, Jonah and the devil mount to an intolerable degree. Clara is forced to confront the desires she’s kept secret her whole life, even from herself.

This mesmerizing, darkly romantic graphic novel kicks off a sultry series that explores artistry and power through the temptation of the seven deadly sins.

Olivie Blake is the pseudonym of Alexene Farol Follmuth, a lover and writer of stories, many of which involve the fantastic, the paranormal, or the supernatural, but not always. More often, her works revolve around what it means to be human (or not), and the endlessly interesting complexities of life and love.

Olivie has penned several indie SFF projects, including the webtoon Clara and the Devil with illustrator Little Chmura and the viral Atlas series. As Follmuth, her young adult rom-com My Mechanical Romance releases May 2022.

Olivie lives in Los Angeles with her husband and new baby, where she is generally tolerated by her rescue pit bull.

i knew what this series was about vaguely when i requested this on netgalley, but by the time i picked it up, i’d already forgotten and so was a little confused going into it. however, i like the suspense filled atmosphere and the slow pace, although this only contains the first 57 pages. i’m looking forward to the entire volume coming out this may so i can read more. it looks like it’s going to be a veeeery interesting read. especially with it being set in a small town, it already feels incredibly claustrophobic. adding this supernatural aspect to it makes the feel of suffocation and unease that much more heightened.

Thank you so much for the sample of Clara & the Devil Pan Macmillan | Tor!

I read the first 53 pages of Olivie Blake’s upcoming graphic novel and I’m obsessed! Blake’s unique writing style is even more highlighted by the absolutely stunning artwork. Especially for readers who sometimes feel overwhelmed by her writing, the combination with the visual elements of the story could be a great alternative.
The watercolor-style artwork and the slightly eerie looking characters and color scheme work perfectly with the seaside town setting, where some devilish things happen.
I absolutely can’t wait to continue the story!

What the story is about:
In the first part of the book we follow high school student Clara, who works in the library during the summer holidays. It’s a small seaside town and her life seems pretty much planned. She will marry her longtime boyfriend, they will move into a small house together and she will work in the library. Clara seems content with her decisions until one day the devil arrives, wanting a library card. Of course, the library is not the only place where he shows up …

I read the 53-page sampler, and was instantly hooked. The writing was fine, but the artwork truly stood out—it is absolutely gorgeous!! I’m definitely going to pick this up at release and continue reading.
