Sometimes a short hockey romance is exactly what hits the spot.
Naomi is smart, hardworking, and constantly overlooked at work, so it was impossible not to root for her. Enter Garrett Tall, a towering, grumpy hockey player who barely speaks and clearly does not want her around. Their dynamic starts as dislike to lovers, with dry humor, sharp banter, and tension that slowly shifts into something much softer and more meaningful.
The slow burn really works here. The chemistry builds through teasing, misunderstandings, and forced proximity, and the spice comes later, which makes it far more satisfying. I loved getting inside both of their heads, even though the story is written in third person, which I am not usually a huge fan of. Still, their internal thoughts added depth and made their connection feel genuine. The hockey setting was well done and approachable, especially with the helpful glossary, and it enhanced the story without stealing focus from the romance.
What kept this from five stars for me was wanting more depth from Garrett’s backstory, especially around why he is so closed off. That said, this novella still delivers heart, heat, and plenty of charm. It is funny, flirty, emotionally warm, and perfect when you want something steamy without being heavy.
A great quick read when you want banter and chemistry.

Poke Check may be listed as a novella, but it packs the punch of a full novel. At times Novellas don’t allow the reader enough time to relate and/bond with your characters, but Poke Check did not suffer from that. It helps that our FMC, Naomi, is in Mila’s book and she’s very likable. A total badass at only five foot nothing, she can hold her own around the crazy hockey players. One draws her attention repeatedly, Tall, grumpy and walls a mile high. But that sexual tension bleeds from the page as well as their general enjoyment of spending time together, even being so different. I really enjoy being back in this hockey world author has created. I’ll definitely follow author and recommend this series. Thanks to BookSirens for this ARC, my opinions are my own.

I just love a good sports romance. Quick little read that had me giggling like a 12 year old who just talked to her crush. The banter and witty comebacks were hilarious. And the epilogue was perfection.

ARC 2.5⭐️
Look. This wasn’t a bad book, but I’m not sure if it was for me. I haven’t read the other books in this series but was told that it would be fine to read as a standalone. It was, but there were a few things that bothered me that maybe were in the other books but not on page in this book, so it made no sense to me. I wasn’t a fan of the FMC a lot of the time, and the MCs names are a little too on the nose for me (Garrett Tall and Naomi Small? Really?)
It is also marketed as enemies to lovers, but it really is “mildly annoyed acquaintances” to lovers, and when they became lovers it felt like insta love. It honestly didn’t make any sense to me because I didn’t get any chemistry between them what so ever. Even at the end of the book, I was rooting to her to end up with Jesse (who actually made her laugh).
A lot of the conversations felt stilted and often didn’t make sense, especially in the beginning. I often got the feeling they were just throwing different one liners at each other, not in response to the other.
The book was entertaining and I’m sure a lot of people will love it. I wish I had read the previous works in the series beforehand, maybe that would’ve helped.

I love me a good hockey romance! This definitely did not disappoint. I will have to read the first two in the series since this one is so good. Naomi first bumps into Garret at a vegan shop. She’s starving and they have two sandwiches left. That apparently are saved for Garret who won’t share. But after multiple times of trading barbs at each other Naomi realizes Garret is the only one who pays attention that she’s working hard. The slow burn chemistry was beautiful between them. I couldn’t put the book down! Absolute must read for me.

I will start out by saying that I was given an ARC copy to read and am giving my own opinion.
I really enjoyed this book! It was a short read, but I was hooked from the beginning. I love a good slow burn, especially with enemies to lovers and this delivered it. We start with the FMC Naomi who is trying to work her way up in the firm that she is at, feeling like no one except her friend recognizes the work that she puts in. It isn’t until the firm that she works at picks up a hockey team that she meets the MMC, Garrett who is a literal giant with the personality of a reclusive and grumpy house cat. The tension between the two is thick, with lots of sarcasm and witty banter that made me laugh. While there are some smutty scenes, they aren’t until later in the book which, in my opinion, makes the slow burn work better and allows the tension between the two to climax to the scenes rather than interrupting the slow burn.
The story was written well and the author even included a glossary of hockey slang at the beginning of the story for people (like myself) who know absolutely nothing about the sport and need it, which I really appreciate! The book is a part of a series, but (as someone who has so far only read this book in the series) it’s not necessary to read to the other books to understand what is going on in this one.
Tropes included in the book: MMC is a black cat, MMC falls first, slow burn, MMC pretends not to care but actually does, FMC is spicy, grumpy x sunshine, touch her and be treated to my death glare, HEA, enemies to lovers, some forced proximity, MMC is a bit of a protector.

4.5 Stars! This is the 3rd book in the ‘Skate Me Home’ series and can be read as a standalone. The main characters are Naomi & Garrett/Tall. She was easy to love with the sarcasm and witty banter. He was a brooding type who didn’t talk much so came off kind of like a Richard. Somehow I fell for him too and was rooting for their HEA ending. Pretty quick read, it’s considered a novella, with smoking sexy times, witty banter, a flirting, frenemies relationship that had me giggling at times and cussing the stupidity of the main characters the next. I really loved all the parts with the kids from the children’s hospital because I was once one of those kids. I was one of the older kids(14), bald, swollen from steroids, self conscious, and in a wheel chair unable to walk.(way back in the early 2000’s) I even got to take my family to the Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies hockey games a handful of times and we had a great time, especially once I was cancer free. This book really brought up a lot of bittersweet memories for me. Anyway, enough about me. The book is super entertaining, funny, with a strong female main character, a sexy, super tall, buff and tattooed male main character, with an HEA ending and a grumpy/sunshine trope. Totally worth reading. I might have to go back and read the other books in the series too. I would’ve liked to know more about why Tall was such a grumpy & quiet guy or maybe make him a bit less closed off. And the hockey slang/terms were so helpful and very appreciated.

ARC Review let’s get into it!
This was a fun and quick read seriously I finished 95% of the book in one sitting. This was a 5 star book the only thing that could’ve made it better for me, is if it was in first person. It absolutely will get you invested in the rest of the series.
The banter, the tension, THE GALA!
Spice level: 🌶️
Garrett ‘Tall’ is a little on the nose for a 6’6 man but accurate, Garrett is a superstitious goalie and has a routine he never breaks. That’s until Naomi enters the picture. She touched his Goalie Stick and after they win, he needs her to do it again. He notices things about her working that no one else does. He showed he cares in a private way
Naomi Piccolo met him before when he took two sandwiches away from her and from that day hated him. Then she ended up working around him and the hockey team he plays for. This put them into each others orbits.
I liked getting to see a book centered around the AHL and will go back to book 1 and 2 to continue the series for sure
I need a Jesse book and a Carter book

I was so happy to see these two get their own book! From reading the second book there are teasers of these two together and I wanted to read more of their story you could tell it was going to be some kind of enemies to more situation and I'm here for it. Also I love hockey romance throw in a tall, handsome, grumpy goalie yes please!
This was a cute quick read with a lot of witty banter that had several laugh out loud moments for me. I loved Garrett and Naomi together and even though it's a novella it felt like things happened naturally between our couple instead of everything being thrown together and rushed. Garrett and Naomi have a similar approach to relationship in that they are bad with sharing/expressing feelings so when the wrong things are said at the wrong time will this be the end for our couple before their relationship even gets started?
I loved the interactions with the team mates and I can't wait for the next book in the series! If you are in your Hockey era this is another good one to grab.

This was such a fun, lighthearted read with excellent banter and undeniable chemistry. The enemies-to-lovers tension really worked for me, especially because we get to see inside both of their minds. Their internal thoughts added so much to the sass, the misunderstandings, and the slow shift in how they see each other. I also loved the hockey elements. The slang and knowledge felt natural and added to the story instead of distracting from it.
What held this back from five stars for me was wanting more depth from Garrett’s backstory. I understood why he was guarded, but I wished we’d dug a little deeper into the reasons behind his reactions instead of settling on “this is just how things are now.” Perhaps that was part of a previous book in the series that I have not read. Personally, my five-star reads tend to either emotionally wreck me or live rent-free in my head long after I finish, and this one stayed more on the fun side than the unforgettable side.
That said, this is a wonderful palate-cleanser. It is quick, steamy, and genuinely enjoyable. If you’re in the mood for a sassy hockey romance that doesn’t take itself too seriously, this one is absolutely worth picking up.

This is the third book in the Skate Me Home series and features Naomi (Small) and Garrett (Tall).
Part of this story follows the same time line as book 2, as it overlaps a bit but shows you what Naomi and Tall got up to.
Naomi can be a small spitfire in high heels with plenty of sass, a woman that has to prove that she deserves to be where she is in her profession.
Where as Garrett is her opposite in some ways, an extremely tall, very good looking, quiet Hockey goalie who is waiting for his chance in the big leagues.
With their paths crossing repeatedly there is plenty of tension (good and bad) between them, leading to some steamy scenes, awkward moments and then realisation that maybe they can have what they both want.
Only if they can working through their uncertainties as they try to show their true feelings to each other.
Loving all the characters and the storyline as I read along.
This can be read as a stand alone but I suggest reading it in order.
Getting to know all of the other members of the hockey team, the fun and antics they get up to certainly adds to the overall story.
Great series so far.

Rooting for the Whalers when they play the Marlies - Rachel how could you lol. As a die hard Leafs fan it was hard to be on the Whalers side 😉

I loved how the author showed Naomi's perspective and the timeline overlap was done really well. I didn't feel like I already knew the events of the story, but I'm a bit torn because it showed how absent Mila was and I really loved Mila's story. Yes it makes sense that if Mila is pursuing Theo she wouldn't be available to help Naomi, but yeah. My head gets it, but my heart was a bit like awww I love Mila!
Naomi, firecracker perfection. She was fierce, determined and I loved the frenemy situation with Garrett. I have to say though Garrett did not make himself easy to love. Another my brain gets that was the point, but he felt just that little bit colder and a I wish it played on his superstition a bit more. Those goalies are a rare breed so I was ready for Naomi having to show up every week or something a bit more extreme.
Richard still made me chuckle every time I read that name. I haven't confirmed, but I feel like that name is only chosen for the double entendre and it just fits.
I still really enjoyed this couple, I think Rachel is really building out this team and I love the banter between the boys as well.

This book is a quick read. I didn't feel like I needed to read the other books in the series to understand the dynamics.

Was lucky to read this as an ARC read. I devoured this in a few hours. This is the best of the three books by far.
I loved Naomi and Garrett together. They had similar walls up and afraid to let people in. The banter in this book was top tier. While Garrett was grumpy he wasn’t particularly mean and whatever he threw at her - she threw back.
The slow burn was slow burning. I’m glad there wasn’t just smut the whole way through.
This book also really ties the other characters well. I’m glad I read books 1 and 2 before reading this - because I knew who everyone was and it wasn’t confusing. While this could be read as a stand alone / I’d probably read them in order.
I’m also really glad that we got the back story on their first meet - rather than just starting after the closet scene from book 2.
The only thing I wish had been flushed out more was her story other than she’s taking on more responsibility. Hoping we found out more where they end up in the next book.
This is has become one of my favorite hockey series. Just fun, sexy, cute stories.

This is such a great book! After reading the previous two books in this series, I was hoping for a story for Tall, and this was just the right couple!!
Naomi/Small is the part of the PR team (she is a consultant), sassy, independent, a straight shooter. One of her assignments is Tall/Garrett, the goalie - a stoic, quiet, and supersticious player. They are like oil and water, their banter is delicious, their interactions charged with tension and attraction, until she crosses a line and becomes part of his supersticious ritual!
What started as simple banter and a joke of sorts, starts to morph on a need to complete his rituals, and the proximity works its magic transforming the slow burn into a passionate relationship.
YOu will laugh at their interactions, cringe at how akward they can be when communicating, and smile at their moments. There is plenty of moments, insight, hockey, intelligent and also funny dialogue, and if you have read previous books, you will see glimpses of the past couples. I loved it!

This book was so fun and easy to read!
This is Book 3 in the Skate Me Home series and follows Naomi and Garrett Tall.
While we got teasers and snippets of the two and their chemistry in book 2, this book follows their story from their first meeting.
Naomi and Garrett have next level of tension and sarcastic and dry banter that fits their characters so well! Their quips and comments were really fun to read and had me giggling!
As with the other two books, we get to see more of Garretts teammates. They’re more of a family and the banter from all the boys is hilarious and fun to read!
I really enjoyed this book and the slow burn of Naomi’s and Garretts relationship. They had their issues but it wasn’t drawn out too long and they were able to communicate quite easily afterwards!
It was also fun to get to see through the eyes of a goalie and see some familiar hockey teams pop up!

I am never going to be sick of hockey sports novels. Poke Check tells the story of Naomi Piccolo who works in HR and the team goalie Garrett Tall who have to work together when Naomi’s HR firm partners with Garrett’s hockey team. This is a classic sunshine/grump trope and I loved the slow burn between the main characters. The plot of the story reeled me in to choosing this book and it lived up to expectations. I was able to read this book in a couple of days and my favourite part was the gala night where Garrett helped Naomi to see how much work she had was doing. The main thing I didn’t like about this book which is very minor was the characters surnames. It just felt a bit too kitsch that they had surnames that matched their heights. This is such a minor thing and doesn’t take anything away from the book. Most people would probably not even notice. I would recommend this book to any lover of romance novels but particularly those who love hockey novels. I will definitely be adding more of this authors books to my reading list. Poke Check was a fun, quick hockey romance and a great palate cleanser between heavier reads. I didn’t have a ton of annotations while reading, which for me usually means I was just enjoying the ride rather than stopping to overanalyze.
The story is written in third-person POV, which isn’t always my preference, but it works well here—especially with the hockey elements. There’s a lot of on-ice slang and atmosphere, and it pairs nicely with an FMC who’s still learning that world. The MMC is broody and comes off a little mean at first (without actually meaning to be), while the FMC is bubbly and sometimes a bit much, which creates some awkward but enjoyable tension early on.
The banter was solid, there were a few genuinely laugh-out-loud moments, and the chemistry builds nicely as the story progresses. Overall, Poke Check delivers exactly what it promises: an entertaining, low-stress hockey romance that’s easy to fly through and leaves you in a good reading mood.

📖 I’m always drawn to stories set in the world of hockey… and I loved this one! The characters are lovable and realistic, the author uses just the right amount of humor and spice & I enjoyed following the love story between Naomi and Garrett. Plus, there are just enough hockey scenes! 🏒

**ARC REVIEW**
First of all this is my first book by this author and I despise 3rd person POV. Being said I pushed thru it giving it a rough ⭐️⭐️⭐️ and here's why..
1. WE GET IT SHES TINY AND HES HUGE it was mentioned so many times I could have started a drinking game and been drunk by page 90.
2. Going off him being huge.. did you have to give him the last name Tall? That alone drove me insane.
3. So in the beginning i disliked garrett but by the end I didnt like Naomi. she was annoying af. I get hes tall broody and emotionally unavailable but in the end it felt like she was worse.
4. Her job drama over shadowed the book. and her coworkers were terrible just so terrible
5. The ending was rushed, when the epilogue hit I was surprised thinking I tapped to aggressively on my kindle. nope the book was just that short.
overall I love hockey romances especially about goalies so I stuck around. it was cute and short. I did enjoy the banter between the characters. and I grew to really like Garrett flaws and all.

This author def knows how to write her men into our hearts. They are funny, snarky, vulnerable and know how to love their women.
And Tall is one you can’t help but love. He’s broody, quiet, anti social, superstitious and hides behind a thick wall of armor protecting his heart. Until he lets the right one in.
Naomi is a snarky spitfire afraid to fall for the hot goalie, and trying to prove to everyone she is good at her job.
After an encounter in a coat closet things change between the two and they both realize that there’s something there, something beyond attraction but one scared comment sends them both running in the opposite direction. With one hurt and angry, the other full of regrets.
This one is full of witty banter, quirky superstitions and spice. It will make you laugh and shake your head at the double meanings and break your heart a little at how vulnerable these two are.
If you have not read this series you need to. Can’t say that enough.

My first read by Rachel Anthony and what a great intro to her work! Garrett and Naomi’s story is so good. Garrett is this really interesting grump but the more you get to know him the more you realize he’s not grumpy but steeled and focus. Naomi is this ball of energy and it comes across in Rachel’s writing style.
She is full of quick wit and sassy one liners but there is more to her. She’s always trying to prove herself especially when it comes to her job.
I loved that this book centered around a hockey player who is playing for the AHL waiting for his next chance to be called up to an NHL team. You can feel his desire, his focus and his drive.
Great job by the author because I could really feel his desire to do everything right to get back there
And then there is the chemistry between these two. They can’t be any different but yet sparks fly from the very beginning. Absolutely worth the read for the love of love and of hockey too!

Rachel Anthony is very quickly becoming an auto-read for me. All three books have been five stars for me and they are equally good as standalone as they are as a series. Because all three books take place around the same time period, its cute to remember what else is going on behind the scenes as this story plays out.
Naomi works for a PR firm which has a contract with the Hartford Whalers. As she sets up events with the team, there is some sizzling tension between her and the goalie, Tall. She continues to sass him and he continues to be very weird. Their banter is great while still being able to really see who the other is beneath the facade.
Rachel Anthony has proven that she writes a mean slow burn. I could feel the sparks coming out even from the sandwich incident. The third act conflict is kind of dumb, but I honestly didnt care because I NEEDED to know how they reconciled.

I really wanted to give this more stars because the overall storyline made for a cute little novella, but I couldn't get past some of the writing. I also really struggle with third person POV in a romance. It tends to take me out of truly getting to know the characters.
First, just the names themselves - Tall and Piccolo (Small).
"She smells of girl shampoo and peppermint" - what does that even mean? Fruity? Floral? Neither really go with peppermint...
He mentions she has a pencil in her bun, but then when she walks away her ponytail is swaying... I'm not the girliest of girls, but I don't think the bun/ponytail combo has ever been in style.
"...licks him like the porniest ice cream cone--" I don't have words to describe the snort laugh/eye roll combo I did at this.
I debated between two and three stars, but ultimately went with two.

I received a copy of this book from BookSirens in exchange for an honest review.
I read the first two books in this series before picking up this one, and overall I’ve really enjoyed the entire Skate Me Home series. This novella was no exception — it was fun, steamy, and entertaining, with humor that genuinely had me laughing out loud at times.
The enemies-to-lovers dynamic worked well, and the writing kept the story moving at a fast, engaging pace. My only real wish is that the book had been a bit longer. Because it’s a novella, some of the character backstory felt a little light, and I think a deeper dive into the characters would have made the emotional connection even stronger.
That said, this was still a very enjoyable read and a great addition to the series. If you’ve enjoyed the previous books, this one fits right in. A solid 4-star read that kept me entertained from start to finish.
