A Silence of Shadows

Rate this book
In a kingdom built on lies and blood, some bonds cannot be broken.

Merrit Locke runs Lock & Key, a neutral bar at the edge of vampire court territory, keeping her head down, her past blank, and her telepathy a secret. Until Prince Kieran Veyne walks through her door.

He’s beautiful, dangerous, and far too observant. When a violent ambush forces Merrit to act, Kieran sees just enough to draw the wrong conclusion, believing she’s a rare seer. A lie Merrit must uphold when he drags her into a world of velvet deception.

To use her, he makes her part of his court.
To shield her, he tells the world she’s his lover.
To protect her, he makes the lie look real.

Now Merrit must navigate a palace of monsters and masks, all while pretending to belong to the one man who unnerves her most. But when blood is spilled and an ancient bond awakens, the line between truth and desire grows perilously thin.

And in a court of shadows, even lies can taste like fate.

A Silence of Shadows is the first in a world of interconnected standalone romantasy novels—complete stories linked by blood, magic, and courtly deception. Expect one dangerously charming vampire prince, a mute heroine with mind-reading abilities, and a fake relationship that turns into something all too real. Mature themes and dark romantic tension included. Reader discretion advised.

Thank you for The Nerd Fam & Annie for the arc!

Unfortunately I was not a fan of this even though the premise is something I’d usually enjoy.

The characters went from disliking each other to liking each other without any natural progression or build up and this instalove felt like it defeated the purpose of the story entirely.

The plot was so transparent it was clear from the start who the villain was and without any plot twists the story became predictable. It took me around four days to finish this because I just didn’t care anymore.

With no actual character growth it was difficult to stay invested in either of the lead characters and because the villain was so obvious and simplistic there was nothing to invest in his character either.

Overall this book fails to deliver either compelling characters or a romance we can enjoy seeing grow.

"You're nothing to me. >> Oh hi now I'm madly in love with you..." Without building it up it's an empty relationship and that's just not satisfying to read.

It’s official, my brain is completely broken after reading this book. I didn’t finish this book, this book finished me. There were so many moments where I was like “This is it, I’m going to hate this book if this person dies, or this person dies, or this person dies..” But honestly? That’s how you know a book seriously got under your skin, and boy oh boy did this one did.

I’m just going to say it. Vampire romances are ELITE, and my mind cannot be swayed. This was definitely so different from the vampire romances I have read lately. They always paint the woman to be just a weak human and Merrit? She was so far from weak. She was so completely bad ass that I’m pretty sure she could make any guy cry it’s just one sentence. Like I want to be her when I grow up. And don’t even get me started on Kieran, mister hot, sexy, vampire prince Kieran. I would definitely crawl across glass just to lick a bead of sweat off that man, and the way he worshiped Merrit? Chef kisses alllllll around.

If you are looking for an amazing romantasy that has hot vampire princes, a bad ass FMC who reps the Deaf/Mute girlies, (who honestly? Let’s just admit. She was the knight in shining armor half of the time for Kieran, which we LOVE TO SEE) some really kick ass side character/minor characters, a plot that will have you sweating because you have no idea what is going to happen, and will make your blood pressure probably rise, and a magic system that is honestly so different and unique that I know we have only touched the surface of it since this is only book one.

*Thank you Nerd Fam and the author , Annie Anderson, for the ARC!*

ARC Reader: I am offering this open and honest review without any recompense.

Wow! AA does it again! This book dumped me right into the deep end of the pool, shook me all around, and spit me out again. The world building, the magic, the FMC… BADASS. I loved the story arc, the character development that never seems rushed or not fully flushed out in Annie’s books like other authors. The MMC is a bit pushy at first but he definitely redeems himself. The other characters were funny, witty, and a girl could not ask for a better supporting cast! And the final twist, was more than what I was expecting. There are definitely some parts that could be rough on some readers so make sure and read the trigger warnings… though I will say, if you are a survivor like me, you will love how AA always gives her characters so much found strength and redemption, with a lot of revenge thrown in. Loved this story and cannot wait for the next book!

Secrets, Magic, and a Dangerous Court

Merrit Lock, a bar owner with telepathic abilities, is working one evening when Prince Kieran enters. An attack breaks out, and Kieran draws the wrong conclusion. He takes Merrit to the court to find the person trying to kill him. Once at the palace, Merrit must navigate the intrigues and pretend she belongs with Kieran. Then an ancient magical bond is unleashed, and the line between game and desire becomes increasingly blurred.

Annie Anderson’s writing style is smooth, and the story maintains a good pace. The book focuses mainly on atmosphere, tension, and romance. Anderson portrays the chemistry between the characters naturally, without it feeling forced. The steamy scenes are subtle, not excessive, and well-placed. She also creates a threatening atmosphere, which adds a constant sense of suspense.

The chapters alternate between Kieran and Merrit, giving insight into their thoughts, feelings, and actions. This allows the reader to follow the growth of both characters, both toward each other and individually. A unique aspect of Merrit is that she cannot speak, while almost everyone in this world knows sign language. Many characters also believe she cannot hear, which makes them feel safe to speak freely. The ancient bond between Merrit and Kieran is not particularly original, but it does not detract from the story.

‘A Silence of Shadows’ is a standalone book, but the series is connected through the shared world, adding an extra layer for readers who wish to continue.

✨️ARC REVIEW ✨️

This was the best vampire romantasy I read in a while! I love Merrit she is a strong FMC who is mute from having her throat sliced and left for dead when she was younger. She is a bar owner in the divide, and Kieran believes her a seer and uses her as part of his court to find out who's trying to kill him. He tells everyone she's his lover, but the banter and the chemistry between them is something they can't resist and turns into something magical. The twist and turns in court will keep you on your seat, and the slow burn is something that is epic. I definitely recommend reading if you love vampire romance.

Thank you, Annie Anderson, for the opportunity to read this book for my honest opinion

A very short summary first. Merrit owns and operates a bar where vampire Prince Kieran comes in for her help. He thinks she’s psychic (because she can give everyone what they want without them asking) but she’s really telepathic and doesn’t want anyone to know because it’s illegal. When Kieran is attacked and Merrit saves him from a blow he didn’t see coming, he feels his idea has been confirmed and asks her to come with him to his castle to help him find out who’s trying to kill him. She doesn’t want to, but when he says he’ll pay the tithe to the pack, she feels she has no choice or she’ll lose the bar. The first night at the castle she is involved in the Hunt, where vampire nobility literally hunt their companions. Merrit almost dies but Kieran saves her, bites her (which doesn’t change her), and carries her in his arms so everyone can see them together. He heals her with his blood then has her drink it to heal her faster. Now they are “whisperbound.” They can hear each other’s thoughts and feel each other’s feelings. Merrit suspects a certain someone of being behind the attacks on Kieran so she sneaks out of bed to investigate and gets kidnapped. Her bond with Kieran is temporarily (magically) severed so when he wakes up he can't feel her or hear her and freaks out. It all works out in the end.

My thoughts: I wanted to scream into my pillow throughout the whole book. I kept thinking that the story must be better than the writing, and it was, but not enough to justify reading it a second time. In fact, I didn’t leave a detailed summary because I didn’t want relive the book! I wondered why so many people joined the Hunt knowing that they were the hunted. I wondered why Kieran had to count the doors to Tobias’ office when he was in the same office since before Kieran was born. I wondered how someone outside the room can walk in and say “burned herself out with that psychic attack" when there’s no way he could know that happened. I wondered how torture could occur in an occupied building's basement and no one ever knew. I mean, screams would wake people up, torture equipment or the evidence of the torture would be discovered (somebody has to go in the basement at least once in ten years, right?)

Best line: “I’m a thousand years old. If I cared what those foolish fucks thought, I’d have gone mad centuries ago.”

Some quotes that made me cringe: “The Divide breeds gutter rats and tavern trash, not consorts. Best keep her leashed before she mistakes your bed for your throat.” What? What does that mean, “mistakes your bed for your throat"?

“The sound tasted bitter on my tongue like glass scraped over bone.” What does glass scraped over bone taste like? Bitter, apparently. Merrit obviously must have synesthesia that’s just never mentioned. *eye roll*

“it was a stab – hers – and I’d been the one to let her walk on the blade.” What does walking on the blade have to do with stabbing? Just…what?

I’m so sorry I didn't like this book. I have read 2 other series from Annie Anderson (Rogue Ethereal and Grave Talker) and loved them both. I was looking forward to reading this and had a complete nerdgasm when I got it, only to be disappointed. I can’t even bring myself to read the bonus scene!

A court of vampire royalty, magic, and hidden telepaths! Merrit, the heroine, is quietly compelling…mute, secretive, and strong in her own way. Kieran, the prince, is brooding but charming.
But, some things held me back. The romance feels a little too fast at times. It seemed they went from hating each other to love quickly.
If you like paranormal romance or romantasy with court intrigue, magic, and danger, this is worth a try!

🌶🌶.5 (open door, detailed but will lack of chemistry for me)
🔥

DNF at 43% for me, which is such a bummer because I really liked the premise and thought the FMC and MMC sounded super interesting. I was excited for enemies-to-lovers or reluctant allies vibes, but the insta-lust hit so hard within the first 10% that it completely threw me off. And honestly, it only kept ramping up from there. It just wasn’t my thing, and I couldn’t get past it. I was really disappointed because I was expecting tension, slow-building chemistry, and all the push-and-pull I love in a romance, but instead it jumped straight into full-on attraction. I had high hopes, but this one just didn’t click for me.

⟣Tropes⟢
✅ Touch her and 💀
✅ Mute FMC
✅ Stabby Heroine
✅ Obsessive/JP MMC
✅ Dual POV’s (first person)
✅ Insta-Lust
✅ No OW/OM drama
✅ FMC not Virgin
✅ He falls first - and fast
✅ 🔥 Fast Burn 🔥

This is a romantic romantasy.
It's a Hallmark Vampire story and I am here for it!
Merritt turned up at an orphanage at a young age with no memory of the past. She adapted and even thrived despite having lost her voice - forever.
Now she's an adult with a job and a life. She has magic but she hides it well. Even becomes a backbone of her community.
Until the night the vampire prince, Kieran, comes to investigate the rumors of the woman who may know things will happen before they do.
And Merritt immediately and accidentally proves she can but saving his life.
With a paring knife.
The prince makes a deal with Merritt to help him root out the evil that's threatening his Court and what follows is a romp of a good time!
And enough spice to make the undead blush.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book!
Thanks for the arc, nerd fam!

This book held me in its pages completely.
She was a nobody, an orphan, that raised herself to own her own business, using her skills.
He's a prince, looking to find out who's working against him, needing her skills, without realising what they fully are.
But together they're much more.
Together they're something almost forgotten, but so strong that it takes blood magic to break it.
But even that has it's limits and their bond is strong enough to fight it all.
And together, they can't fight to put her past behind them and build a future that has even shocks them, with who welcomes it.
I thoroughly enjoyed this story.

Annie wrote it, so I read it, and it was glorious. A new story, a new world, new characters, new foes, new magics, but still Annie. I laughed at the crazy, I held my breath with worry, I felt overwhelmed with emotion and heartache. I was excited, surprised and having finished I am filled with joy.

The plot is concise, the world fully rounded. Merrit and Kieran are both complex characters who love hard and without reservation. I loved all the side characters. They had full personalities and I'm hoping to see them all again in future books, especially Nadia and Serenya.

Don't miss the bonus epilogue, it's beautiful.

Annie Anderson's Silence of Shadows is dark romantasy goodness. I loved Merrit and Kieran. He's the dark prince to her fire and steel. The fake dating trope is one of my favorites, and it was done perfectly. Kieran is surrounded by enemies, and he thinks that Merrit is the answer to all his problems. Thinking she's psychic, he brings her with him to that pit of vipers he calls a court, pretending that she's his consort to find out who's been pulling strings. Kieran becomes obsessed right away, even when he shouldn't, while she is begrudgingly attracted to him. They couldn't stay away from each other. This romance burned hotter than a flame, and I loved it.

Merrit is mute and communicates entirely through sign language. This was the first book I've come across where sign language was a secondary language for most of the characters. Annie did an incredible job getting things across, and it made the plot even more interesting. The plot was incredible. I read this book in one sitting. Forbidden romance, a vicious court, assassination attempts, and a conspiracy that took me by surprise. Silence of Shadows was perfection with strong leads, a brutal romance, and a plot that leaves you on edge. If you're looking for your next fantasy romance, this is it.

I opened this book expecting to ease into the story, and instead chapter one walked up, slapped the drink out of my hand, and said, “Pay attention, sweetheart.”
And oh I DID. Hooked. Instantly. Like a gremlin spotting shiny objects.
I was SAT from the first chapter 🧎‍♀️

Our ruthless FMC is truly the definition of unbothered menace. A walking silent alarm system with knives, trauma, and the patience level of someone who has absolutely been through it. I adored her.

Meanwhile our MMC is a beautifully wrapped red flag with legs. Appears on page, breathes once, and suddenly I’m like:
“Okay fine, ruin my life.” 🥵

The vibes of this book are:
✨ bar fights but make it magical
✨ trauma bonding with style
✨ tension that made me feral
✨ morally gray chaos gremlins everywhere
✨ the plot grabbing my face and going “keep up”

The pacing snaps. The worldbuilding slaps. The characters had me giggling, kicking my feet, and occasionally whispering “oh that’s hot but also illegal.”

It’s a 4-star read because I devoured it like it personally owed me money, but also because my entire nervous system is now in recovery.

If you want dark vibes, sharp banter, and a heroine who could end you with a single well-aimed glare…..Yeah. This is absolutely the book that steals your sleep and your sanity.

Whisperbound I Series review

Thank you for entrusting me with this arc!

Our story follows Merrit Locke, a tavern bar owner in a territory of vampires. She is a telepath- something that is forbidden in this realm. Were anyone to find out about this fact, well…let’s just say she most likely won’t live to tell the tale. Kieran (the vampire crown prince), believing Merrit to be a seer, approaches her with a bargain to help him root out the corruption in his kingdom. Merrit accepts, and we are swept away to a world with entrancing political intrigue, court politics, and an electrifying fake relationship.

I adored the daylights out of Merrit while reading this! She is headstrong with a mysterious past, and has a no bs policy for herself that helps her get things done. Between that, learning about her past, and having a mc communicate through sign language, (which was a new take and one I wish we saw more of!), she was easily one of my favorite fmcs I’ve read about this year.

The storyline was fast paced and high stakes. The characters were interesting with clear motivations (-something needed for an political intrigue book in my opinion), and told from the point of view between both Merrit and Kieran, The writing was well done, the magic was unique, and the story overall a fantastic read. I will most definitely be on the lookout for future novels from the Whisperbound series!

I really wanted to love this book. 😩

It started off very intriguing with the FMC being mute and having abilities of mind-reading(which is not allowed). I started off liking Rhett and Jex, but quickly learned they wouldn’t be in the story very much.

I am not a fan of insta-love, so I was so annoyed when they were already together at 50%. That’s when it started to become a struggle to want to pick this book up. The story was predictable from then on, I already knew who the villain was and already knew what would go down.

I will say the MMCs brothers sound interesting, but we didn’t get to learn too much about them. I really hate I didn’t like this one. But, I gave it a shot and it definitely could be for someone else.. just not for me. I rate it 2⭐️ just because it had promise at the beginning, but did fall flat for me.

*I do thank the author and the nerd fam for this arc in exchange for an honest review*

The story follows Merrit Lock, a telepathic bar owner wrongly caught up in an attack on Prince Kieran. Taken to the palace to help uncover the real assailant, she must navigate court politics while an ancient magical bond complicates her relationship with Kieran.

Anderson's prose is steady and atmospheric, emphasizing tension and controlled romantic development. Alternating viewpoints deepen character insight, while Merrit's muteness, unique in a sign-fluent world, creates narrative opportunities. The magical bond trope is familiar but integrated effectively.

We got vampires, y'all!

I wanted really badly to thoroughly enjoy this book as it had a very interesting plot but there were a few scenes that felt rushed and I would have loved more world building to have taken place.

The main characters Merritt and Kieran seem to fall in instalove and become soulmates or whisperbound very quickly and although the spice scenes are delicious I feel as if it didn't happen organically and happened too swiftly.

If you want an action packed fast paced romance this book is for you!

I’m a big fan of Vampire Romances and Annie Anderson. This book seemed like a no brainer to me. Merritt is the kind of FMC that I love to see. Strong, capable, funny and a fighter. I loved that she also had a speech disability. Kieran grows on you. Annie delivers a well rounded world that leaves you wanting more when the book is finished. When does book 2 come out, Annie? I need to know. She gives you enough depth in the supporting cast to leave you wanting to know more. Can’t wait to see where we go next. ARC Reader with an honest review.

Merrit Locke is a telepathic bar owner that can't speak but always knows just what to sign. Kieran is a vampire crown prince with assassins trying to kill him. The two have nothing in common, their lives are very different. But with Merrit's skill of reading thoughts, Kieran can find who is out to get him. Sparks fly when Merrit is hurt by the would-be assassins, and Kieran has to heal her with his blood. Whisper-bound mates have always been a legend, but Merrit and Kieran find that it is all too real.
This book is a serious page turner with mystery, suspense, and lots of spicy romance. I couldn't put it down and absolutely stayed up all night to finish! It hit all the spots of a fantastic world to emerce yourself in! I can't wait for more of this world and it's characters!

I flew through this book - lots of action, romance, and spice.

The FMC, Merrit, is mute and pretending to be deaf. She's worked hard to carve out a life for herself. With the forbidden power of telepathy, she's trying to lay low.

The MMC, Kieran, is the crown prince - though not the first born son. His appearance in Merrit's bar means her carefully crafted life is over. Bringing her in to a court out for blood, physically and metaphorically, she's supposed to save him from unknown threats. Already his allies are falling. So how does she keep her secret and save the day? Clearly the answer is pretending to be his consort.

While the narration can be a bit repetitive at times, but my biggest complaint is that the two MCs sound very similar despite their upbringing, ages, and station in life. I also think it was too naive of Merrit to think no one had figured out her secret. I say all of this to point out that I know the book isn't perfect, but I don't care. I was completely immersed in the story.

I sincerely hope the author continues this series!

Thank you Annie Anderson for providing this book for review consideration. All opinions are my own.

TL;DR: I loved this book, and it just continues to show why Annie Anderson has become one of my author obsessions this year. If you enjoy fated mates, reluctant allies-to-lovers, and political intrigue then this is a great book for you.

This was an easy book to give 5 stars. I loved Merrit and Kieran, and I was surprised and happy to see a full complete arc of their relationship while also having a complete fantasy plot arc. I loved seeing Merrit give as good as she gets, and watching her strength grow through the story was such a delight. This is the first book in a new series, and I can't wait to see more stories in this world.

Thanks to Annie for letting me be a part of her ARC team, I've been eagerly awaiting this one since I saw the announcement back in August.

ARC reader, this is my honest review for this book. Annie Anderson never disappoints! Absolutely need book 2 ASAP.. I would have finished this sooner but life kept getting in the way. 😂
Love the bond between Merritt and Kieran! Merritt is a mute bartender from the Divide, Kieran is a vampire Prince who is next in line to be King. This book is full of action, magic, magical creatures,as well as sabotage and intrigue. Lots of feelings that quickly change for the reader in this book. But the ties between the characters (found family)are deep and protective. If you enjoy reading about the thing listed above.. GET THIS BOOK!

I liked the representation for the FMC in this book and how she holds herself, tho society sees her as deaf and some treat her differently for that. She is a strong willed girl who has alot of ambition and gets what she wants. The dynamic between the FMC and MMC is slight enemies to lovers but not very intense. I do like a little more enemies before lovers but it is still good. They make a good duo together, although I feel the enemies to lovers to consumed with each other kinda mushes together. The ending surprised me a little as its reveals some of her past, which I liked because a lot of times I can predict what’s going to happen.

Sometimes I feel like I resonate with some books and this is one of them. I got into this book from the first page. When life drags me away, I instantly want to return.
I love the characters, banter, twists and turns and the multiple hints on who could be the next to have their own story.
I like Merrit. She is plucky, loyal, fierce and does not back down. When Kieran was first introduced I thought he was going to be snobby, which would made him difficult to like and I was so glad to be wrong. Yes he is rich, but he is so much more. Both Kieran and Merrit have such depth of character that you root for them, and live their journey with them. This is a brilliant read!
I want, no… I need to read more in this series as there is still so much more to discover.
Please write more stories soon!
