A well researched and written history of the Alabama Fuel & Iron Company (AFI). The AFI was a model of anti-unionism and industrial paternalism that dominated the non-captive coal market in the Birmingham Industrial District during the first half of the 20th century. Stone’s book focuses on the AFI company towns in St. Clair County. As a great grandson of an AFI employee, this book was a joy to read.
