Welcome to the Enclave...

I fell for him and he lied.
Made a deal to give me to his father.

Now we’re all captured, and my heart has been torn to shreds.

I thought it couldn’t get any worse than that, but I’m proven just how wrong I was.
The games have begun, and there is no guarantee for survival in the enclave.
But the king has harbored a secret, one I am to work closely with.

I can only hope we get out of this alive.

But when your hanging from a rope in a cell with a monster...
It’s hard to see any hope at all.

Im not a professional reviewer so it's mostly a lot of questions or things that didn't make sense *to me* and will probably become a too long mini rant with many spoilers.

I feel like there was no strong enough reason why they were waiting so long to kill the king. Nothing would have been different after the final game especially since they had their dragons already during the last game. Why didn't the leaders mount the dragons as soon as they were available and break the dome? Or command the dragons to fight the guards immediately? It made no sense in my mind that they went immediately to fighting each other when there was already a "solid" plan. Which was not a real strong plan to begin with. I think any dark book with wars should have deaths but alot of what happened in the last game was questionable. Also, I find it hard to believe that if the king and everyone around him was so evil and all capable of SA of many others why Alara was spared, especially considering how much Rohan proved that she was his weakness and I feel like if they truly wanted to torture him that would have been the way. Not saying that's what I would have wanted for her character but like I said if you're going full dark on war books then make it fully true to theme not only the parts that suit you. Why didn't the family help kill the king at the last game if the guards and such would have been on their side? At the very least poison him or something idk. I found many things hard to believe about this book so that's why im giving a low rating. It had potential and I'm disappointed of how things played out because everyone was just winging everything. No solid plan was made, what would have been the difference if the king knew they would try to attack him before the game or after? What would have been the trap to that false information anyways?it was always going to upset the king they were plotting against him no matter what time it was going to happen so what was the logic in feeding the traitor the "false" information? I thought the king messed up and played into their hands when he brought all the dragons out in the final game but nope, they all just completely forgot about whatever plan they thought they made. Why did they need to train other people to ride the dragons to break the dome if they could have told the dragons to do it without a person having to ride them anyways? Why did Emerish not give the king a elf all this time if he had many? Wouldn't he have wanted to win the kings favor with one if he had more? I find it hard to believe he wouldn't have killed off her friend in rage once they threatened him with exposing him. What about the kings other son and daughter? How do they feel about the kings death? They seemed like evil people too are they still alive? Has his mom's drgon always been able to produce nighturn? If so why did they now know where it came from until she was out? I think the first book was good but the 2nd could have used more thought and time on it.

I'm disappointed, theoretically so much happened, but also nothing really happened on pages, it was repetitive and boring for such a bloody story, I really loved her previous books, I hope the next ones will pick up again

I'm not gonna lie, I don't even know how to rate this book. This is book 2 in a completed duet and amps up an already dark and violent world to 100. It evoked so much emotion in me that I felt nauseous at one point. The amount of graphic violence, torture and death in this story puts it at the top of my 'tragic books' list. I read a fair amount of dark stuff but this one just got to me.

A psychopathic tyrant king who is hell bent on tormenting any group of people he sees as below him and his, has spent decades terrorizing anything or anyone who he crosses paths with. He's had it out for the clans of dragon riders/caretakers and has chosen to use his power and force to push the clans into a set of deadly games that they are desperate to stop. Enter the elves, or one in particular who's true empathetic ability clashes with the violence of the world she lives in. Having been brutalized for as long as she can remember, she's fighting demons no one can see and the new path fate has put her on.

Heads up, book 2 is darker than book 1 by a lot in my opinion. This duet is gut punch after gut punch but it's worth it if you can handle the triggers.

4⭐️ only because I really loved the ending.

This was depressing and bleak as fuck to get into.
From the start of the book all 5 the Dragorie clans are imprisoned by the King to participate in The Games and it’s just straight up people dying, dragons dying, the fmc and mmc getting repeatedly tortured, repetitive conversations about how they’ll stop him blah blah blah for hundreds of pages. It was like sooo much happened but nothing was happening too it got frustrating to read.

I was like ok let’s keep reading, hopefully they escape soon and get out of this absolute nightmare of a situation but this book has 632 pages and it isn’t til chapter 52- around 82ish percent that the Clans start to properly fight back and it all comes to a head. Really don’t understand why it couldn’t have happened sooner, but I will say it was entertaining as fuck to read from that point on.
So if you’re reading through all the depressing shit for hundreds of pages and it’s mentally draining you and you want to skip to the last Game and the climax of it all just skip to chapter 52.

So from the Games end when Rohan thinking Alara was dead and losing his absolute shit and basically hulking out dragon style, the movie that played in my head while I was reading this was absolute cinema if I do say so myself 😂

They got a very very well deserved happily ever after 🥰

-Dual PoV
-Darker than book 1 there’s multiple side character deaths and dragon deaths 😭
-No owd/omd
-HEA
-Epilogues
There’s an ever after and an ever ever after,
Alara and Rohan get married and then in future have a daughter and are expecting a son.
Its ends with “Rohan and Alara lived happily, lovingly, ever after.” 🥹

And can I just say thank fuck for that 👏

First of all, I would like to thank Kelly Cove for trusting me with an eArc. This was the very first eArc I ever received and it was an absolute blast. I was really excited when I got it, so thank you for the opportunity! <3

I read the first book in this duet a while ago, but it got me soooo hooked that I needed to sign up for the eArc. When I got the mail with the eArc confirmation I was over the moon and I couldn't wait to start it.

This book took me a bit longer to read, the book was really good don't get me wrong, life just got in the way a bit and I got busy. I was a bit devastated because of that, but that didn't take away my motivation to read the book.

I've finally finished it and I'm so ready to write my review now. I first want to mention that this book is REALLY dark, even darker than the first one. If you want to read it, please check the trigger warnings first!

Okay so, I want to start off with talking about the characters. The main characters, Alara and Rohan, are absolutely amazing. They stole my heart with how much they cared for each other. I really like it how Rohan had to grovel to get Alara to trust him again, that was deserved after the ending of book one. I also like how protective Rohan is, I meannnn, we all love a protective MMC right? The side characters also stole the show. All the dragons are so amazingggggg, I love how they all act like puppies with Alara hahah. Side characters like Tofa, Beau, Melle and Sigrid also stole my heart. The author is really good in giving them each a unique personality. This book does the found family trope REALLY well. Clan Blackscale foreverrrr.

Now about the plot. The plot twist at the end of book one was absolutely insane, it blew me away. I was excited to see how the author would pick it up in this book, and it did not disappoint. Halden is a true piece of shit, all the Dragorie people and dragons did not deserve what he put them through. I also found it really original that the trails took place in the second book, in most fantasy books trials always take place in the first book, so it was refreshing to read it in a different order. The trials also didn't disappoint. I would've thought them to be brutal, but this brutal? No, it was heartbreaking to say the least. The plot line about the stolen eggs was also picked up really well, as well as all the other plot lines. Everything came together in the end, and it felt like all the plot holes got filled and all my questions answered. The ending was overall really satisfying.

The world building in this book is also really good. The different clans with different territoria, the Glade where all the dragons reside and the different lands like the Eleven lands. So so so amazing. The dragon Glade was my absolute favorite place in the whole book, it just felt so mystical all peaceful.

Reading this duet felt like one big journey and I'm glad that I picked up the first book. I will forever cherish these books and of course the opportunity to get my first ever eArc. Thank you so much Kelly Cove, for this amazing story and all the characters and dragons within it. I am very excited to see future books of yours, because you actually gave us a little teaser at the end for the next book and I can't wait to read that story in the future! <3

This book starts at the end of the last one.
Elf, now named Alara, feels betrayed by Rohan who is revealed to be the bastard son of the evil king.
There is a lot of angst and hurt between them, but Rohan does a FANTASTIC job at grovelling so they end up together again and just in time for the evil Games of the evil king.
The Games are trials set by the king to have the Dragorie and their dragons killed.
As Rohan tries to save as many of his clan as he can during the trials, Alara needs to get close to the enslaved dragons that the king keeps in the dungeons.

Comment 1: This book was definitely inspired by How To Train Your Dragon.

Comment 2: The scene after the Fifth Game felt a bit off. How did the king know they would betray him? Still good though.

Comment 3: I expect a book about Niyah and Alexandar.

Comment 4: What happened with Adora, Olaf and Kaldar? Did they continue their relationship as a threesome or did they add the handsome man from the Highwing clan to their throuple?

Comment 5: Did Tofa ever find another love or did she live her life as Calian, mourning his death and never taking a lover again?

Comment 6: Did Sigrid eat Dorkin in the end?

This is the second book and conclusion to the Upon Buried Embers duet. The books must be read in order.

If you were left hanging by your finger nails on the cliffhanger of book one, buckle up, you’re in for a wild ride.

Rohan and Alara firmly secure their spots in my all time favorite couple list. They endure so much, conquer unfathomable odds, and share their unwavering devotion to achieve an epically earned HEA.

I cannot say enough good things about the incredibly powerful storytelling. The characters (both people and dragons) are fully fledged, grab you by the heart and don’t let go throughout the entire book.

Any book that can make you both laugh and cry gets high marks in my book. This series exceeds even those expectations. While your heart will most definitely get ripped out of your chest, it has the sweetest, most endearing moments between the main characters and the dragons they are gifted to ride and protect.

In short, run-do-not-walk, to read this series.

I’m crying whilst writing this.

This was the most perfect, the most devastatingly heartbreaking, yet heart-fulfilling ending to such a beautiful story. I don’t think I’ve even realised it’s over yet, but all I know is that the tears are pouring and I am, indeed, hiccuping. No words can describe how amazingly written this book was or how incredible of an adventure it took me on. Guys, I genuinely could not stop crying. I didn’t think I’d make it. There was so much depth to this book, and my heart felt every single bit of it.

Alara and Rohan… I fell in love with them almost a year ago now, and they’ve had a chokehold on me ever since. Rohan really did seem like a brute at times, with his hard exterior and all the mystery surrounding him, but in reality, he’d gone through so much. With the right person (or rather, elf), he finally changed for the better. It was so fulfilling to watch him finally get his revenge, to know that he did everything he could and made it. It was just as fulfilling to see Alara come so far and finally find her own voice. She was so brave, so strong, and her resilience made me absolutely sob. She is such a bright, beautiful soul who went through absolute hell and still persevered.

Gosh… all the other characters I fell in love with; little Melle, Tofa, Beau. It truly felt like I got to know every single one of them. A part of me will stay with them and this entire story forever. I’m so happy they got the ending they deserved, but you guys don’t understand how much I’m grieving or how hard I’m crying because it’s finally over.

Gosh, and they say you can’t find a safe space in a fictional place. Well, bring them to me, because I most definitely did.

Thank you so much, Kelly, for working so hard to bring this universe to life. I’ll love these characters forever.

There isn’t a rating high enough to tell you how I feel about this book, but for now…

∞/5 ⭐

Upon Buried Embers duet concludes with Under Broken Wings.
Book one saw Alara be betrayed. Book two picks up with the aftermath, but first...the beginning of the potential betrayal. It didn't come easily. It came with pain, but more is yet to come. Rohan knows that he messed up, and he knows how badly. But it changes nothing for Alara. Now, he must prove himself to her, and try to make things right.
If you thought book one was dark...buckle up buttercup because book two is coming to show you just how dark things can get. Granted, things could have gone darker, but then our characters might not have found their way out...with just the scars that they receive with this story.
The drama is intense, and there are some heavy situations that they find themselves in, but Alara's resilience and determination really come out to shine in this book. The way that she and Rohan manage to come back together and reforge their relationship is a true show of strength. Their HEA is hard fought for and won.

I really enjoyed the first book in this duology, so I was excited to return to this world. The story pulled me back in quickly, with plenty of action and emotional stakes.

That said, this sequel didn’t resonate with me quite as much. I personally struggled to reconnect with the characters emotionally, and even during moments that were clearly meant to have a strong impact, I often found myself feeling more detached than invested.

I also felt that some conflicts and events could have been developed or explained more clearly, as there were moments where I struggled to follow the logic behind them.

Without going into spoilers, I had mixed feelings about how some of the events toward the end were handled. I would have liked to see more exploration of the consequences of certain actions, as the resolution didn’t fully work for me.

Overall, an engaging conclusion to the duology, even if it didn’t capture me quite as much as the first book.

I vaguely remember reading the first book in this duology -- specifically doing in my Physics I class when I should have been listening -- and I was SUPER excited about the sequel when I finished it. Unfortunately, that was all I had going into this book, and unlike the majority of the people who liked it... I was left a tad disappointed.

We pick up immediately from the previous cliffhanger, where both Alara and Rohan are imprisoned by a tyrannous king who conducts "The Games" -- a killing competition where all Dragorie clans have to fight and compete. Alara is reeling from the fact that Rohan lied to her, and Rohan is desperate to explain himself. Since Alara is an Elf, the King wants to use her as some sort of tool to strengthen his rule. From the beginning, I did like how honest and forthcoming both of the main characters tried to be with each other. You immediately know it's a fantasy novel when the men are good at expressing their feelings and openly yearning for their woman. The romance throughout the book followed this theme, with intense declarations, soft moments, and a lot of protective angst from Rohan. They WERE cute, don't get me wrong. I was just missing a little... zhuzh. Also, this book is collectively a LOT darker than the first book, with explicit torture and death on the page. Not necessarily a bad thing, just something to consider as a reader.

Okay, let's get into it. If you know me, you know that I go feral for the hurt/comfort trope; it's my absolute favorite. Rohan and Alara had the perfect amount of hurt/comfort in the first book, but I thought it felt repetitive and overdone in the second book. If he is comforting her in the same way over and over again, the impact on the readers is less apparent. I stopped caring as much when they got hurt. I also thought the plot in general was repetitive and surface level. Maybe this is just because I've read hundreds of books, but I was not impressed and could predict what was going to happen. I was STILL hooked to keep reading, but it was less satisfying than it could have been. (Spoiler) A lot of major character die in the end of this novel... and yet, I didn't care? The characters were interesting enough, but their platonic/familial/etc relationships with the main characters were not explored in enough depth. It felt a little cardboard.

And now, two last nit-picky things. How often do you need to repeat this man's wholeass title?!? Dear lord, I GET IT. He's the clan leader guys, did you know. It was cute the first time, not so cute the tenth. Secondly, why is magic -- like full blown magic, not just an Elven talent -- coming in to the play at the VERY end of the novel just because the main characters were losing? That's kind of a sellout in my books.

Anyways, I don't hate this second book, but I liked the first book a lot more. The characters were still growing and changing, and there was diversity in the plot lines. Some themes ARE beautifully well-done, such as the strength in being soft and kind. However, that doesn't SAVE it for me. I'm on the fence about recommending the duology, but I don't regret it! <3

Favorite Quotes:

"To those who fly with broken wings."

"'You are meant for great things, Rohan Asgarr, rider of Dragonah, Dragonbond, and the leader of clan Blackscale.'
'And they mean nothing if I don't have you.'"

All hope seemed to be lost as Rohan and Alara and their people fought for freedom.

This story picks up right where the first book ended. Right from the start, it was very hard to read, with its casual cruelty and unnecessary violence. Not gonna lie, the despair and utter hopelessness really got to me. I kept waiting for Rohan and Alara to find a way to fight back, but the odds were heavily stacked against them. They didn’t give up and their love was a ray of hope.

Be aware, the violence was quite horrific. I wanted things to turn around sooner before more people and dragons suffered and died. But I also really wanted to see how it would all play out and what Alara was capable of when it came to communicating with the dragons. This book comes with plenty of warnings, heed them.

My least favourite part was how you kind of became numb to all the never-ending brutality. There were too many senseless deaths.

The simmering resentment and anger finally reached the point of no return with a spectacular showdown. It was a very satisfactory ending, filled with renewed hope and purpose. I was left feeling sad over all the lost lives but knowing that they will be remembered and honoured.

So, in summary, this book covered some extremely stressful situations that were tough to get through at times, and ended on a bittersweet note. This series is for you if you like intense heroes, dragons, and underdogs, with a hot, spicy romance. It is definitely best to read the books in order.
Thank you to the author for providing me with a copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

WHAT TO EXPECT:
✔️ Grovelling
✔️ Touch Her and 💀
✔️ Angst
✔️ Dragons
✔️ Jealous Possessive MMC
✔️ Enemies to Lovers
✔️ Morally Grey Men
✔️ Tragic Past
✔️ Heartbreak

Under Broken Wings is much darker than the first book, with some sensitive topics, so please check the trigger warnings on the author’s web page if you have any triggers.

Book two in the duet starts right where we left off with the cliffhanger from book one, so the tension and angst start right from the first chapter. Under Broken Wings had me feeling all sorts of emotions, including anger, heartbreak, love and loss. I enjoyed the sweet moments and the dragons' personalities, which added to my enjoyment of the duet. Many relationships evolve on this journey, solidifying this found family unit. Once again, Under Broken Wings falls into the category of a book I would reread, making it worthy of my 5/5 star rating. While this duet is complete, I hope we may see a spin-off with some of the other characters introduced in the series in the future.

We are back with Alara and Rohan. These two just took my little heart and made it squeeze with so many emotions. The second book will have you on a roller coaster of a ride. The journey, emotions, the darkness and the light that all runs through the story has this story one that will pull you in and keep you glued to it. There are so darker moments that will pull your heartstrings into grief that you feel alongside these amazing characters. They have become like friends that you will miss as their journey comes to an end. I absolutely love how well the story pulled me in and didn’t let go. There are moments that will make you smile and laugh out loud and moments that will cause tears to flow. I absolutely adore the dragons and their antics throughout the story. The ending was spectacular and definitely is an amazing

Brutal - in vielerlei Hinsicht.

tortured animals

If you cant stomach the mistreatment or torture of animals/abuse of animals do not read this book. I cant stand it and had to dnf this book series. Outside of that I find the series to be very slow and they infantilize the fmc a lot and make her super kiddish (looks, body, and innocence). It comes off in a very gross way in the first book. Very much like grooming and preferring someone of age that looks prepubescent. Its disgusting. I don’t know how so many people who read this is ok with any of it. It’s foul.

Oh how I adore Rohan and Alara — the way they love and complement each other is honestly everything to me.

Still a good read but I wanted a little more from the second book. Assuming next books will dive into the “arranged marriage” plot line of other characters

ARC review. I was so looking forward to this and was not disappointed. It was a great conclusion to the story and picked up the struggles of the FMC from book 1 and completed all story arcs. I did not give 5 stars as there were some points in the story that were just brushed past or actually irrelevant to the conclusion, so I didn't understand why we read about it at all. But: I am hoping for more stories in this world and universe and any other story this author has to offer! Very good 4 stars!

Kelly Cove is becoming a must read author for me, although her books will definitely not be for everyone as they are on the darker side! However I loved Rohan and Alara!

And I just really want a dragon now!!!

I liked the first book a lot, but I found the themes in this one to be quite repetitive. This book was good, but I wasnt terribly interested in it as I was with the first
