A No-Spice Dark Fairytale Series
--------------------------------------

My life is a fairytale - and I don’t remember any of it.

Three years ago, I became a stranger in my own body, memories gone, identity destroyed. Life was a lie, and I wasn’t looking for answers. So, when a cryptic letter arrived, dragging me back to a place from my past, I wasn’t prepared for the uncaging of things I don’t understand.
Things I don’t want to remember.

A fairytale kingdom, a royal crown – a forbidden love who protected me and a forced one who betrayed me.

The world I took for granted and failed to protect.

Now, the figures from that world are crossing into this one, hunting me for an ability I can’t remember.

An ability that could determine my fate.

As the pages of my past begin to fill in, one thing becomes clear - the explosion that took my memories wasn’t an accident. It was meant to erase me. And the fairytale world hangs in the balance, tied to a past I’m afraid to remember. If I don’t reclaim it, we will all be erased. Permanently.

That’s where I find myself now, nestled between the pages of a book that’s being Unwritten.

My life is a fairytale - and someone else is writing the story.

Don’t usually read fantasy, but had this one recommended so I thought I’d try it. I read books 1 and 2 – the first book sets up the story well. There’s a lot of mystery and as things unfold you begin to learn what is happening alongside the MC. It reminds me of Once Upon a Time. I would definitely recommend reading it and then jumping right into the second (I will review that one as well), you will not regret it.
(Also, this book is marketed as No Spice – and it is just that!)

I was a tad worried when I first started the book but by chapter two I was hooked. I love the lost memory aspect a lot + magic + romance...? Chefs kiss. Definitely worth a read. Quick and lovely.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
It was a really lovely surprise. Unwritten is fun and original: fairytale characters pulled out of their stories and dropped into the real world, with one amnesiac girl somehow standing in the middle of everything. It’s imaginative and very easy to get into.
I really liked Falon. She felt believable and I enjoyed following her as she slowly started to understand who she was and what was happening around her. The fairytale side of the story was probably my favorite part, along with the plot twist involving The Narrator, which I thought was super clever. The middle dragged a little for me, but the ending definitely made up for it and left me curious for the next book.
One small thing I noticed is that, at least for now, we mostly meet male fairytale characters. I’m interested to see whether that changes later on as the story expands.
Also, for a debut novel, this was a very strong start. Anastasia de Winter’s writing feels warm and natural, and I’d absolutely read more from her. If you love fairytale retellings with a fresh twist, this one is well worth your time.

Once upon a time…

This book was charming, exciting, fun and captivating. It had my brain constantly turning, looking for answers. The characters are easily likable and distinct. The romance is super cute. I really, really enjoyed this book.
There were only two things I noticed that I wasn’t crazy about:
1.) the only fairytale characters/ characters of any significance are male.
2.) there are only two girls that we meet that are around Falons age. Both of them are stereotypical jealous girls. I wish Falon had a female friend that was an actually friend and not an enemy of some kind.

But overall, really enjoyed this book and thought this idea was very fresh!.

Unwritten pulled me back into fantasy after quite a long break from the genre, and I'm glad it did. The premise is instantly hooking — a woman with no memory of a fairytale life she apparently lived, hunted for an ability she can't remember having, with a forbidden love and a betrayal waiting somewhere in the pages of her past. De Winter builds intrigue quickly and keeps you turning pages, and the clean, no-spice storytelling lets the mystery and world-building do all the heavy lifting. If you've been away from fantasy for a while or are looking for an accessible, engaging entry point, this is a great one to pick up. Enjoyable from start to finish and easy to get swept up in.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
