English Title: Beyond Time and Space Detective 102 chapters + 19 extras 3rd person POV
So feel relieved to have finished this because sometimes it felt like a chore.
I agree with the other reviews that the author has done their homework on forensics but their explanations often feel like they’ve come straight from a textbook.
Usually I don’t enjoy stories with time travel in but this didn’t bother me, probably because there wasn’t a convoluted reason as to why it was happening.
Ye Huairui (MC) and Yin Jiaming’s (ML) blossoming relationship was the highlight of this story for me.
I like to be on the edge of my seat when it comes to crime thrillers and was disappointed that I never was when reading this. Honestly, it felt slice of life at times.
This one gave me such Signal vibes in terms of presenting the past and the present as if it's happening simultaneously and how there's a mysterious phenomena that's helping the person from the present to be able to communicate someone from the past. This is not exactly a time travel but it's still a matter of story transcending through time so there's definitely some time paradox involved.
I absolutely loved the premise of this one. The time-transcending way of exchanging information to solve the cold case is such an interesting plot that I don't see very often because it can easily mess up and create plot holes. But I think this one was handled well. The ML from the past, who was basically a fugitive and was being limited in terms of his actions, and the MC from the present, who is decades away from changing anything that's already happened, both of their hands are supposed to be tied. But that premise only served more thrilling scenes. Having 39 years time gap between them also added to the desperation and longing and that's what makes this more raw and it will definitely make you feel apprehensive. This story can easily lead to a more tragic and heartbreaking ending, but fortunately, author is not that cruel.
I also find it interesting that the MC and ML, because of the time gap, take actions separately and they work on their own. They're not always together. They also only have this limited, mostly rushed, time with each other so you might think there's not enough time for them to catch feelings. But I loved that the author was able to make you feel their growing affection for each other in such a short span of time without making you feel like it's instalove and that their feelings are shallow. In fact, it's the opposite and the author did that very effectively.
Also, I think the author has some forensic background or just a highly knowledgeable forensic enthusiast but that part of the story is very well written. So much details about forensic but not in a way that will drown you but it will make you fascinated. I actually learned a lot. I loved authors that do their proper research.
This is such an unexpectedly engaging read. I didn't even know this one exist and just happened to come across this in the depth of NU recommendations. I'm glad I discover this though because this is such a pleasant surprise. Highly recommended.
First of all, people really like to praise the forensic science in this book, which I will admit is pretty good, but it is so boring. It's like reading a textbook, or a case study from a textbook. I've taken a basic forensic science class, and this book was boring while that class was actually exciting. Anyway, aside from that, the writing is boring as well. There was a lot of telling and not enough showing happening. And the romance came out of left field even though we're already told who the main characters are, because THERE WAS NO ROMANTIC BUILD UP. They had very little time with each other and even less chemistry. By the time the plot started unraveling and the two main characters started confessing to each other, I felt so bored. And then I ultimately just thumbed through the last 30% of the book. It was deeply unsatisfying because it had a lot of potential but lacked the execution needed.
Anyway, I think it’s obvious some people might think about [Mist] since this novel also deals with time travel, but they’re not really that similar. The premise of this novel is actually pretty similar to “Turning the Path From Murder” (probably more known as ”Replacing the Evil Way”). However, I actually enjoyed this one way more than I did TTPFM! I thought the chemistry between the main leads was pretty good, and I liked that while their interactions were centered around the case, they still had interactions that made their bond/growing affections for each other believable. I enjoyed that the crime solving was done from a forensic pathologist POV and that the author seemed to do a lot of research for the novel! The case was pretty fun while also being tense in the right moments. I also really enjoyed that the leads had friends/community of their own to support them, it’s always nice to see leads in danmei that interact with people other than their beloveds, lol. Some people might be disappointed that the parallel timelines never got a scientific/in depth explanation, but I honestly don’t care. I think it’s better to just leave it blank rather than poorly explain it (the c-drama Reset does the same thing and it’s a really good/enjoyable drama, so…there’s really no need to explain every little thing). Overall I had a fun time!

I've seen the English name translated as Beyond Time and Space Detective.
Novel is about two people: a modern 21st century forensic pathologist who somehow can overlay in the same spacetime as an accused criminal in hiding 39 yrs prior. Under limited contact and great time constraints, the two have to solve a cold case that has implications on modern day activity.
Ignoring how the physics would work, the novel and crime is very well-planned and beautifully written. Pacing is rather quick so there is some loss of characterization, but I found what was there to be very engaging and sweet. What I really appreciated is that the author has looked extensively to real forensic cases and forensic science, displaying them as accurately as the story allowed here. Great read for crime/sci-fi lovers.
