Ruby and Cordelia Mysteries #2

Death at the Door: The Ruby and Cordelia Mysteries, Book 2

Rate this book
The odd couple of crime-solving returns in Olivia Blacke’s Death at the Door, where a ghost and her living roommate find another mystery on their doorstep.

Ruby Young is slowly adjusting to her new life in Boston. A big part of that is her unexpected roommate—the ghost of the woman who lived there before. For Cordelia Graves, she may no longer be breathing, but it’s still her apartment and Ruby is the somewhat unwanted houseguest. They’re both happy they’ve managed to become friends, which is a miracle considering they struggle to communicate with each other. Cordelia even set Ruby up with her old job.

When Ruby discovers the body of a delivery guy at work, the new life she’s been building hangs in the balance. The last time Cordelia dragged Ruby into a murder investigation, it was almost two ghosts living in the apartment, not one. Determined to protect Ruby, Cordelia tries to shield her from the investigation, but Ruby has other ideas. It will take both of them working together to navigate the fine line between the dead and the living to bring a killer to light.

Death at the Door
by Olivia Blacke
Oh, I just love a good ghost story! Mix a ghost story with an intriguing mystery and you've got a winner! This one is certainly a winner. I read this author's first book and loved it just as much.
The characters are likable and believable. Yes, even the ghost! If there are ghosts, in her situation, they would act just like her!
The plot has fun parts, suspenseful scenes, and times of satisfaction. I enjoyed it. It's not your Friday Night Horror ghost story. This is a ghost story for the average person. I like unique stories.
I want to thank the author, publisher, and NetGalley for letting me read this great book!

Thanks so much to NetGalley for the free Kindle book. My review is voluntarily given, and my opinions are my own.

I loved the first book in this series so much, and I was so happy to receive an advanced copy from NetGalley. It took quite a while for them to approve my request, and I was so sad, thinking I wasn't going to get an ARC of this book because I really wanted the next book. So I was so thrilled when they finally sent it to me!

The duel pov is so amazing. Cordelia and Ruby can't talk to each other or see each other, as Cordelia is a ghost. So they use things like refrigerator magnets and an etch-a-sketch to communicate. Even though Ruby doesn't know much about Cordelia, the reader gets to know her very well. I love how there is more character development with her co-workers, which is the first book was a new job, and here she is learning more about them as she works there longer.

An amazing paranormal cozy! Definitely would recommend this and can't wait for the next book! Hope there are a million more in the series!

You can't go wrong with a story that has one of its main characters being a ghost. "Death at the Door" was a great second installment in this paranormal mystery series.

Ruby is adjusting to her life away from her family and living with her roommate/ghost, Cordelia, when someone is murdered at work. Ruby and Cordelia team up to try and figure out why he was killed and why. In the process we learn more about Cordelia's life and that things were not what they seemed. Ruby's work life may also be in trouble. Ruby and Cordelia need to find out what really happened before something else awful happens.

This was a great mystery that had me guessing as to what really happened until the very end. Cordelia being a ghost and teaming up with Ruby elevates this novel to the next level. I like that the reader gets both of their perspectives. This one also introduces us to Cordelia's brother and we learn more about her back story which I enjoyed reading about. The two of them are a great team and I can't wait to read more. Even though many questions were answered, more were raised and I can't wait to see what happens with them both.

Thank you to Minotaur Books and NetGalley for this ARC.

Death at the Door 4⭐️

A Ruby and Cordelia Mystery: Book 2! My favorite cozy murder mystery duo. Last year I enjoyed ‘A New Lease on Death’ and was so excited to pick up where I left off with Ruby and her ghost roommate, Cordelia. This story digs deeper into Cordelia’s relationships and family history, while also watching Ruby continue to find her footing as an independent adult.

I love the unique POVs and the budding friendship between the living and the dead. The witty narrative made me chuckle aloud multiple times. The only negative: just like the first book, there was quite a bit of repetitiveness. Mostly reminders of the limitations of Cordelia being a ghost. Regardless, this series is fun, quirky, and a great non-scary ghost story. I can’t wait for more!

Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press/Minotaur Books for this ARC. This review will be shared on NetGalley and Goodreads. Pub Date Oct 21 2025

Special thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for a free, electronic copy of this novel received in exchange for an honest review.

Death at the Door” is the second novel in Olivia Blacke’s “Ruby and Cordelia mysteries” series of novels. I thoroughly enjoyed “A New Lease on Death”, which was the first novel, and I highly recommend both, which is fortunate because this is the type of series that should be read in order.

After relocating to Boston months ago, Ruby is still adjusting to her new life. Not only is Ruby still working at the tech company where her friend Cordelia- her ghost friend, Cordelia- worked, but she is also still living in Cordelia’s former apartment. During a typical workday, Ruby discovers the dead body of a food delivery boy, Marty, in the bathroom stall at work and, of course, in true Ruby fashion, she takes it upon herself to figure out what happened, recruiting Cordelia and her ghostly abilities. But as Ruby uncovers that Marty was strangled, she also realizes that he had a side hustle that was dangerous, not to mention not exactly legal, and there may be players in the game who do not want the women investigating.

The ghostly Odd Couple pairing of deceased Cordelia and her living partner-in-crime, Ruby, is sharp, clever and hilarious and I am so glad Blacke brought back the dynamic crime-fighters. Both women narrate alternate chapters, which is a great way to connect with readers, but it also serves a dual purpose since Cordelia and Ruby cannot speak directly to each other (most of the time), it helps readers understand the inner workings of both protagonists. In this novel, specifically, we learn a little bit more about Cordelia, finally, and there are definite hints that her death may be the next one the pair investigates.

The primary setting of “Door” is Ruby’s (and Cordelia’s) tech office, with all of their colleagues making occasional appearances. Initially, it was difficult to keep track of the various characters (with the exception of the only two females, excluding Ruby) but they each have unique personalities that make them stand out, once you are a few chapters in. Even when I knew all of the potential suspects, I still struggled to narrow it down, which speaks to a well-crafted mystery.

Blacke provides substantial twists and turns, making the mystery a tricky one to solve but, when she reveals the suspect, it all makes perfect sense. As predicted, this novel, too, ends with a cliffhanger; however the initial murder is solved in this story, so there was some resolution to take comfort in. I will be looking forward to another Ruby and Cordelia ghost-human mystery solving story from Blacke!

‘Death At The Door‘ is the second book in the series about two unusual roommates: Ruby Young, a twenty-something woman who has left home for the first time to make a life for herself in Boston and Cordelia Graves, the ghost of the previous tenant in the apartment Ruby has rented and whom only Ruby is aware of.

I described the first book in the series, ‘A New Lease On Death‘ as a:

“…gentle entertainment. It was too low-key to be a thriller, too cosy to be horror and too simple to be a mystery AND YET it was a lot of fun to listen to. What I enjoyed most was watching a friendship grow between the naturally solitary, forty-something.-and-now-deceased, native Bostonian Cordelia and the perky, outgoing barely-twenty, first-time-ilving alone, new-to-the-city Ruby”

The same description applies to ‘Death At The Door‘. There is another murder for Ruby and Cordelia to solve, but the main interest for me was learning more about Cordelia’s life, watching Ruby finally start to be less naive and having Cordelia’s ex-con brother appear on the scene.

The mystery was quite good. I enjoyed the descriptions of the dynamics between the owners and developers in the small software company Ruby works at as a receptionist Office Manager (the job Cordelia used to do at the same company). The pacing of the story was relaxed but didn’t drag.

I like Corderlia and Ruby well enough to want to read the next book in the series. Now that they've solved two murders together, I think it's time for them to look into how Cordelia ended up dead in her bathtub. I'm also keen to see what role Cordelia's recently-released-fron- prison brother will play.

The only niggle I have is how Ruby and Cordelia communicate. Ruby can’t hear or see Cordelia unless Ruby gets very drunk. In the first book, it was amusing to see Cordelia and Ruby struggling to find a way to communicate. The idea that Ruby can’t read cursive made me smile, and the use of a fridge magnet poetry set was cute and ingenious. In this book, I got a little tired of all that. If Ruby is too lazy to learn cursive, then maybe she could buy a Scrabble set or a Ouija Board or, even better, a set of fridge magnets like THIS ONE. I hope that Olivia Blacke doesn’t persist with this in the third book.

I recommend the audiobook version of 'Death At The Door'. Giving Cordelia and Ruby a narrator each brings the chapters told from their points of view alive. Click on the YouTube link below to hear a sample.

Death at the Door is the second offering by Olivia Blacke in the Ruby and Cordelia Mysteries series. It takes off at a run right off the last page of the first book, and as in the first, so ends the second. . . .so I'm already ready for the third. . .I just MUST know how this all sorts out.

Ruby is the quick member of this duo, and Cordy is the dead one. Ruby is young and untried - naive. Cordy had a life lived in a way that tested boundaries, and appears to have been rather jaded. She's not sure about the end of her life exactly - was it murder or suicide? That's all yet to come in future pages. . .so to make sure you are ready when it does, my recommendation is to catch up and read #1 and #2. I've enjoyed both. The two roommates work well together.

Color me Interested. Staying in for the ride. Bring on #3.

Another installment of Ruby and Cordelia!! While not quite as good as the first, it is still quite entertaining, as we watch the duo stumble through solving another murder. This book definitely is laying the groundwork for future books, so you definitely know there's more to come!

Dollycas’s Thoughts

It isn’t easy sharing an apartment with a previous tenant. It is harder yet when that tenant is a ghost. Ruby Young and Cordelia Graves are doing their best to make it work. What is even crazier is that Ruby is employed in the position Cordelia held until her death. She is the receptionist at TrendCelerate. Most of the group works from home, so the job is pretty easy, but today there is a big meeting and the entire staff is in the office. Of course, they will need food, so Ruby orders from the local deli, Beantown, delivered by Marty.

Later, Ruby finds a dead Marty in the bathroom with Cordelia trying to hold the door closed so that it isn’t Ruby who finds the body. Well, that horse is out of the pen. After the previous murder, Cordelia and Ruby found themselves wrapped up in she didn’t want them to be caught up in this one. But this time it was Ruby who felt the need to investigate. Everyone at that meeting was a suspect, and there could be others. She hopes Cordelia can communicate with Marty’s ghost, and they can quickly reveal the killer. If not, Cordelia knows all the people at TrendCelerate and will have the necessary insight to hone in on the true murderer.

Will Ruby and Cordelia be able to take down a killer? Or will their sleuthing land Ruby in a whole bunch of trouble?

This is such a fun concept. How does a human communicate with a ghost? Ruby can’t hear anything Cordelia says, and to see and hear takes vast amounts of alcohol, which leaves Ruby with a killer headache. They have ways, but it is hard when a new neighbor comes to visit or Cordelia’s brother tries to move in. I enjoyed learning more about Cordelia in this story. Her brother had no idea she had passed away because he was away dealing with his issues. He was able to share stories about their childhood, and more information about the time before her death was shared as well. After this book and the previous one, we know Cordelia’s death wasn’t from natural causes or an accident, but she is not ready to sleuth out what really happened. Ruby is still working through issues we learned about in the first book, A New Lease on Death.

The relationship between Ruby and Cordelia has evolved into a real friendship. Cordelia is trying to teach Ruby to cook and is meddling in her love life. The trip to the grocery store was hilarious. Ruby is trying to replace Cordelia’s plants that she killed and helping her adjust to life as a ghost, which is hard for a very determined ghost. They are a unique team when it comes to their investigations. It is fun that Cordelia can go off by herself to meet with another ghost and follow some clues. I enjoy that the chapters alternate between Ruby and Cordelia so readers get both women’s points of view. It does cause some repetition, but that’s what happens with dual point of view.

Ms. Blacke has crafted a complex mystery with a bushel of suspects, twists, turns, misdirection, secrets, and lies. Ruby and Cordelia keep digging even when the police have decided Marty’s death was a clear drug overdose. At times, Cordelia becomes Ruby’s worst partner in crime. She talks Ruby into doing things and then forgets the clearly stated Ghost Rules, like being too close to electronics will cause them to blow up, or making sure no one can see her move things. I enjoyed the author’s detailed descriptions; they allowed me to imagine every scene, especially when a brave Ruby faced off with the killer and received a necessary assist from Cordelia. But there was another mystery to solve, and Cordelia didn’t disappoint.

Death at the Door was a compelling read featuring a quirky sleuthing duo trying to do what’s right. With plenty of humor and a surprising reveal, this story is perfect for those who enjoy a suspenseful mystery balanced with plenty of humor. I am very excited for the next book in this series, Cordelia and Ruby have “an awful lot explaining to do,” and Cordelia has to make a big decision.

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. Thank you to Minotaur Books and NetGalley for providing me with an ARC.

This book was entertaining and an easy read but not my favorite cozy mystery. I love the concept of a ghost helping a living woman (a breather, as they're called in the novel) to solve murders, but there are so many things I didn't like about the book. It's repetitive: we're told again and again that the office at the "breather's" job, TrendCelerate, is soundproof from the other offices but not within the office. We're told again and again that Cordelia, the ghost, gets hurt when she touches people but that she can fight past it because what she believes is what will be true. So many concepts are repeated that it's like the author doesn't trust her readers to remember the rules and descriptions we read or that she's insecure about her world building. It's frustrating to read the same details over and over again. I also felt like the mystery wasn't well-developed enough. There is an interesting murder at a good spot in the plotline, but the clues aren't necessary. The resolution comes with one easy piece of information that clarifies everything, and it comes right at the end. There were various players and some red herrings but nothing compelling enough. While I appreciate Ruby and Cordelia's relationship and learning more about their backstories, again, there is tons of repetition about Cordelia's bond with her younger brother Ian and about Ruby and her mom and two sisters. I also find the remarks about drugs and alcohol and p**n off-putting. It's like the author just thinks all these things are so cool and wants us to identify with people getting drunk and stealing and committing adultery and doing drugs. And, of course, there are commentaries about these things from Ruby, but Ruby can't be taken seriously. We're told that she's "perky" and naive and small and young. Cordelia always wants to protect her, and it's interesting to see their two different perspectives on each other, their relationship, and the events that unfold, but it's also an awkward dynamic.
I don't really recommend this book, honestly. It's okay, but it's not something I'd continue with, even given the cliffhanger ending.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing an e-version of this book.

Ruby and Cordelia are roommates. There is plenty of space in their cozy, one bedroom apartment. Neither one makes too much noise or mess. There is trouble with the lighting from time to time, and communication isn't always the best. That's to be expected when you live with a ghost though!

Ruby Young is living in Cordelia Graves' apartment. It came cheap and fully furnished after Cordelia unexpectedly died there. Being a ghost is lonely so having Ruby around is fun. Cordelia set Ruby up with her old job, and they've been friends ever since.

They've solved a mystery once in A New Lease On Death and now they'll have to do it again when Ruby discovers the body of a delivery guy at work. Cordelia wants to protect Ruby, but Ruby has other ideas.

This mystery series is a lot different. It's not really cozy but there is humor and a charming sadness. I really enjoy the writing style as the words smoothly fly by. Ruby and Cordelia are very likeable. They make an interesting sleuthing duo. Cordelia sees things Ruby can't. Explaining them is the hard part. Then Ruby does something Cordelia doesn't approve of and yet Ruby is very smart for her young age.

There are a couple new characters. One of them is important to Cordelia's story which we are still learning about. They are very flawed yet still likeable.

I didn't guess the killer. I was rooting for it to be someone else lol. The thing I like about this series the most isn't necessarily even the mystery. Just reading about Ruby and Cordelia and seeing them work together is fun. Cordelia might be dead but her story isn't over; I'm excited to find out what really happened to her. Ruby's is just beginning. The end leaves us with a new, intriguing development. I can't wait to see what comes next!

I really enjoyed the first one in this series, so I was excited to dive into this one and it didn’t disappoint. I loved getting to know Cordelia better in this one, from meeting her brother to learning more about her childhood and her relationships prior to her death. The mystery was well-paced and the central focus of the story, though there is a little time for Ruby to make new friends. I also found the ingenious ways she was able to communicate with Ruby fascinating, and the cliffhanger is making me desperate to read the next. Highly recommended if you’re a fan of clever mysteries and ghostly friends.

Thank you to Minotaur Books and NetGalley for providing an advance copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. The book will be published on November 4th, 2026.

The second murder mystery starring the unusual detection team of Cordelia and Ruby: Cordelia Graves — a recently deceased woman coming to terms with navigating the world in her new state — and her new “roommate,” 20-year old Ruby Young — an annoyingly perky young woman who is hell on (Cordelia’s beloved) houseplants.

In this episode, a favorite delivery guy — who delivered more than the delicious sandwiches Trendcelerate (Ruby’s company) orders regularly — is found dead in the company bathroom. Looking like an overdose, the police aren’t too concerned. Enter our half ghost-detection team.

These stories are fun, the characters engaging, and even the filler piques my interest. Lots more backstory on our characters with the addition of a few more (e.g. a cute guy across the hall, Cordelia’s not-dead but also definitely not honest or law-abiding little brother), and we learn some more about Cordelia’s own death.

Fun ideas, good execution, an engaging read.

Death at the Door by Olivia Blacke is the second book in the Ruby and Cordelia Mysteries series. It continues the story of an unlikely crime-solving duo: Cordelia, a ghost, and her living roommie, Ruby.

When a delivery person is found dead at Ruby's workplace (which also happens to be Cordy's former workplace) the two roommates team up to investigate.

I found Death at the Door to be more than a little repetitive. How many times does a reader need to be told that breathers are unable to hear ghosts talking, or that Cordelia is constantly causing light bulbs to explode, and the electronics in computers to stop working? I found it annoying that Ruby and Cordy think they can communicate only via an Etch-A-Sketch, or by using the poetry magnets on their refrigerator. An Etch-A-Sketch? Really?? Instead of trying to write messages to each other via poetry words, why not buy ABCs magnets? I imagine those things are meant to add hilarity to the book.

On the positive side, Ruby has a huge heart, and I loved that. I also loved Cordy's quirky personality. She seems to find Ruby to be naïve and needing of protection, which I like, too. The mystery portion of the book kept me on my toes, and my very favorite lines in the book are Ruby speaking: "I knew from experience that if I pushed too hard, she'd refuse to answer. She might even disappear for a few days. There's nothing like being ghosted by an actual ghost."

Many thanks to #MinotaurBooks, for providing this book for review and consideration via #NetGalley. All opinions are my own. Death at the Door has an expected publication date of October 21, 2025.

Olivia Blacke is so much fun.

I thoroughly enjoyed the first book in this series and this one delivered the same kind of fun, entertaining, ghost-flavored mystery as the first. It was fun to see this story continue and to learn more about our key players.

Over the last few years, Blacke has become a must-read for me. If you're a fan of her record store books and don't mind a little bit of paranormal fun, check out these books too.

Death At The Door is the second book in the Ruby in Cordelia mysteries by Olivia Blake, I am always nervous to read the second book in a series as I fear it won’t be as good as the first but no worries Miss Blake has definitely hit it out of the park. In the second book there’s yet another murder of a well-known delivery person who Ruby knows also dealt drugs to her fellow coworkers. As they investigate the case we also get to know more about Cordelia and her rogue brother who Ruby knew nothing about. I really enjoyed getting to know Cordelia and her story and love that just because she was dead the author wasn’t afraid to make her a person with faults as well as all the glaring reason the reader loves her to begin with. we also got to know Ruby and Cordelia’s coworkers and how Cordelia new one of them may be a little too well but as it stands as they investigate the murder they find better ways to talk to each other only Ruby may or may not remember the next day and once again I was absolutely floored by the murderer. I mean I got the connection but never once did I think OMG that’s who did it I love these books and cannot wait for the next one even when they’re not investigating and we’re still just getting to know the characters like Ruby’s new neighbor it’s still so interesting and so worth reading I love these books and as always can’t wait for the next one. there’s something about the authors riding style that seems relaxed but at the same time wanting to find the answers and I probably explaining it wrong but I love her books as if you can’t tell I must’ve said I love this book 1,000,000 times already. A definite recommend and must read for those who love funny cozy mysteries with likable amateur sleuth’s.#NetGalley, #TheBlindReviewer, #MyHonestReview #OliviaBlake, #DeathAtTheDoor, #TheRubyAndCordeliaMysteries,

Decent, but nothing to write home about. The idea of a human and a ghost solving murders together is a good one, but the characters themselves make it a struggle at times to enjoy, along with the repetitive writing.

Ruby - the human, or breather as humans are also called - is back and involved in another murder mystery. Cordelia, her ghost roommate and partner in crime solving, is there to help her figure it out. The main problem is they're both quite incapable at times of doing even the easiest of things. Ruby is young, naive, and doesn't seem to understand how the world works at times. She struggles with not making herself look crazy to those around her, as she is constantly caught talking to Cordelia, which makes it look like she's talking to herself. She also struggles with keeping the fact that Cordelia is still around to herself, as she says things she shouldn't know and keeps thinking it should be fine to tell people she speaks to a ghost. Cordelia struggles with remembering the fact that she is a ghost and constantly gets too close to electronics and fries them. You'd think that after a couple of times of this happening she'd remember not to, but no. This is a running theme throughout the book. The author also repeats other info over and over, like the fact that Cordelia can't get too close to electronics without frying them (even though she still does), that her and other ghosts call humans "breathers", that the TrendCelerate office is soundproofed from other offices but not on the inside, etc. People don't need to be told these things constantly. It starts taking away from the story when we're told the same info again and again.

The mystery isn't bad, but I found myself frustrated at times with how it was going. Ruby had no problem breaking and entering into someone's house, nearly starting it on fire (thanks to Cordelia and the aforementioned electronics), and then leaving. Cordelia likes to insert herself into every situation and do things to try and stop things she doesn't like, which just puts more suspicion on Ruby. Their friendship isn't bad, but man they do some dumb things. Once a single clue is dropped towards the end, the mystery basically solves itself, which is a bit of a letdown.

This series isn't terrible - I can see why some people find them cute and entertaining, but they don't quite do it for me. However, I think with some more editing and a few fixes they could be quite good.

This is the second book in the Ruby and Cordelia Mystery series. I enjoy the premise and didn't mind that there is a ghost, Cordelia, as one of the main characters. Along with Ruby, the young tenant renting Cordelia's apartment, the two are great amateur sleuths. Ghost antics always add the the humor in my opinion and I certainly enjoy Cordelia.
The first book in the series came out a year ago, so I went back and started there. I love reading series and getting to know the characters. I am a “read them in order” kind of girl. The second book was a little better than the first installment. I will continue with this series for sure.

The crime solving roommates are back! I wasn’t sure at first how this series would unfold in the second book, but I really had a fun cozy time.

I love the motherly relationship between Cordelia and Ruby. It’s endearing that Cordelia teaches Ruby how to cook and just looks out for her in that caring way. Their friendship is one of my favorite things about this series, along with the creative ways they try to communicate, almost reading each other’s minds, it’s super fun.

The writing and mystery are very entertaining. I really liked Cordelia’s new backstory, showing her caring nature from a young age looking after her younger brother, Ian. I’m super intrigued by all the new breadcrumbs, hopefully leading us to catching Cordelia’s killer in the next book! The cliffhanger is already killing me 👻

This was an entertaining cozy mystery featuring a ghost and her human roommate.

Death at the Door by Olivia Blacke

Thank You NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press/Minotaur for a complimentary copy in exchange for an honest review! All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.
This is book two in this series. Ruby Young, who currently moved to Boston, is renting the apartment where Cordelia Graves’ ghost is still present. In the first book of the series, A New Lease on Death, Ruby and Cordelia worked together to solve a murder. Now, in book 2, Marty the food delivery guy (among other things) who delivered at Ruby’s workplace, TrendCelerate, is found dead in the company’s bathroom. Once again Ruby with the help of Cordelia’s ghost, work together to find out what happened. With suspects from among TrendCelerate’s employees and visitors from a competing company visiting that same day, there are numerous possible suspects. One such suspect working at the competing company, lives right across from Ruby in the same apartment building! And on top of everything happening, Ruby gets some unexpected visitors! This novel was a fun, cozy/spooky read perfect for the Halloween vibes! It comes out just in time on October 21, 2025!

This was a fun cozy mystery with a paranormal twist. Although second in series, it comfortably stands on its own.

Ruby Young is settling into her new life in Boston. She and her roommate (sort of), Cordelia Graves, the prior tenant of Ruby's apartment and currently a ghost in the in between state, are getting along swimmingly. They are constantly navigating ways to communicate - sometimes with awkward results. Cordelia encourages Ruby to take her former receptionist/assistant post at TrendCelerate a struggling hi-tech firm. When a competitive firm descends upon them claiming patent infringement, temperaments run high, words were slung, and a perfect murder opportunity delivered. Too bad that Ruby was first on scene to discover the body. Is there a murderer in their midst at TrendCelerate? Is it safe for Ruby to stay there? She and Cordelia decide that they must get to the bottom this for the sake of Ruby and the firm.

Olivia Blacke has delivered a solid cozy mystery. The writing is good. The characters are well developed. Ruby is a sweet kid, recently out on her own. Cordelia is looking out for her; making certain that Ruby doesn't make the same mistakes she did. The action and banter is often amusing. Personally, being from Boston, I wish the mise en scène was fleshed out more descriptively. Yet fortunately, this story has all the red herrings one would hope for, and a most satisfying conclusion.

I am grateful to Minotaur Books for having provided a complimentary copy of this book through NetGalley. Their generosity, however, has not influenced this review - the words of which are mine alone.

Ruby and Cordelia are back to solve another murder! We pick up where the first book left off; Ruby is still living in Cordelia's old apartment, working at Cordelia's old job, and Cordelia is happy following Ruby around as a ghost. Ruby is enjoying her quiet life after the excitement of the last murder in the building, and is finally settling into Boston life. However, this quiet won't last much longer. On a seemingly normal, albeit busy, Monday morning, Ruby discovers the beloved Beantown delivery driver dead in their communal bathroom. Not wanting to get involved again, Cordelia tries to keep Ruby out of it - as much as she can. However, as the case grows more complicated, Cordelia joins the cause to help bring down whoever is responsible for killing Marty. The past also comes back to haunt both women, putting Ruby in danger (since Cordelia is...y'know...a ghost) and making her question who she can really trust. The living and dead are on the case once again!

I enjoyed the first book in this series, and with the cliffhanger at the end, I knew I had to read this one. The writing is just as witty and exciting as the first, and I enjoyed seeing how the relationship between Ruby and Cordelia has evolved. However, I was a little let down by the book. It was easy to get through and kept my attention, but I kept feeling like something was missing. There were a few characters introduced that I wanted more from, and a few parts of the book were a little drawn out with no relation to how the book ended. I am glad that it seems like this won't be the last of this duo, as this book also ended on a cliffhanger - arguably a bigger one than the first. Overall, I did enjoy the story! I didn't see the twist coming, and again, I enjoyed the story building between our two sleuths. These books are the perfect cozy reads for fall! Definitely pick up both if you are looking for something quick that will get you in the spooky spirit.

Quirky characters, mysterious happenings, who-done-it
When I accepted the ARC for this book for review, I was intrigued by the fact that a ghost was helping the living person solve the mystery. Their association and “friendship” were delightful. Here we have Ruby who at 20yo left home in Baltimore and a bad ending to a likely also bad boyfriend to move to the big city, Boston. There she lucks out to get a furnished apartment in a less than desirable area but with a rent that she can afford. What she finds out is that the apartment is furnished because the former occupant died on premises with no known family. In the first book in this series, they solved a crime together. You see, Cordelia being a ghost can get into the most unlikely places. Communication unfortunately is difficult. Overtime, they have figured ways to do that and they will need all their resources to find the killer of the latest victim. There are other mysteries to be solved: Who is Tosh really? Who stole TrendCelerate’s latest app and how did CloudIndus, their biggest competitor, get it? What is with Ian? Lastly, did Cordelia commit suicide or was she killed and if so, why? I am hoping that future books will tackle these queries.
I truly enjoyed this book but for some reason it took me much longer to read than others of comparable length. I am not sure why. The author is good about character development and setting the stage for events to occur. You be the judge when you read this fun, light-hearted murder mystery (oxymoron much?) which I volunteered to review through NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press.

In Death at the Door we return to the apartment that Ruby and her ghosty roommate, Cordelia share, and join them as they work to solve another murder. I read and loved the first book, A New Lease on Death, and was excited to pick up this next book in the series. Death at the Door focuses on a murder at TrendCelerate, the place that Cordelia worked at before her death, and Ruby works now.

As the two roomies know each other better now, they work well together and the affection they have for each other comes through. My favorite moments are when Cordelia uses the ghostly tricks she has learned to help figure out what someone is up to, or just to cause a little mischief. The mini golf scene had me cracking up.

This one had me guessing up until the end and is a fun paranormal cozy mystery.

She did it again, ladies and gents 👏🏼
Our favorite ghosty and breather detectives are back at it, and they’ve solved another murder in this super cutesy mystery.

I absolutely loved A New Lease on Death and had a feeling there had to be a sequel—and I’m so glad I was right. Now I’m crossing my fingers for a third!

This one felt a little bit lighter and funnier whereas A new lease was a bit more spookier. I did notice some repetition and spots that could’ve been tightened up, I still had such a great time returning to this world. Ruby and Cordelia’s dynamic continues to be the heart of the story—sweet, funny, and just the right amount of mystery.

Ruby’s getting used to life in Boston—and sharing her apartment with the ghost of its former tenant, Cordelia. But when a delivery guy turns up dead at Ruby’s workplace, the unlikely duo is once again drawn into a mystery that blurs the line between the living and the dead.

This is a good continuation from the first book, but I felt like the mystery elements weren't as strong this time around. It read a bit like a filler book, intended to just introduce some new characters and obstacles rather than deliver on the mystery. The resolution felt a little flat and unrealistic, with too few clues for the reader to piece together along the way. It seemed like the answer was just handed to Ruby and Cordelia rather than fully figured out. I did feel like the book was just as addicting, fast paced and had the potential to be just as enjoyable as the first one but fell short at the ending. I also thought Ruby was a lot more naive and frustrating than in the previous book so I'm hoping there will be some growth in the next one. Overall I would still continue with the series, I’m invested enough in the world and characters but I hope the next book will have a stronger mystery.

Thanks to Netgalley and St. Martins Press for this e-ARC that I chose to read and review

I enjoyed the first book in this series and I think I loved this one even more. Ruby and Cordelia are learning to navigate their situation, Ruby is living in Cordelia’s prior apartment in Boston, as Cordelia has been unalived. They communicate in unconventional ways, which was fascinating to me. And then when Ruby finds the body of a delivery guy at work, she and Cordelia are back to investigating again, although Ruby is not thrilled about it, but she can’t seem to help herself. This was narrated by Petrea Burchard and Stefanie Kay and was a delight to listen to. I had so much fun following along with these two, and enjoyed this one from start to finish. It seems like we will get a third book and I am very excited about that.
