Brynen Harlow has an impossible choice to make. Betray her country or betray her heart.
Born with the power to heal, Brynen is a commoner hiding a deadly secret from the Crown. When the Witch Finder catches her practicing unlawful healing, she's sent to the Tower to be burned.
Before Brynen faces the pyre, an ancient enemy attacks from the continent. When the stones of Hampton Court run red with mortal blood and the vampires seize London, Brynen finds herself trapped between two worlds.
The High Commander of the vampire invaders, Yasha Darkov, singles her out and enlists her to aid the vampires in their occupation. Conscripted by the vampires to take a blood tithe from the populace, Brynen begins to unravel the dark secret at the heart of Terra Noxa. Danger mounts as the deposed nobles begin to plot while the vampires’ true intentions remain shrouded.
The closer she gets to Yasha, the more she wants him and the sinful promise of Terra Noxa's freedom. Can she trust the man who covets her body and blood, or the former nobles attempting to claw their way back to power?
Augusta Grey lives in temperate Fern Gully (the PNW) with a curmudgeonly fae partner and three chaos gremlins that happen to look like cute house cats. When she isn’t writing, she is making fairy trades with her spouse and haunting the local stationery store.
Ooh I love how this effortlessly combined history and fantasy, it almost felt like rereading but with a deeper dive into the past A Discovery of Witches when they travel back to Elizabethan England. The pacing is pretty fast maybe a little too fast at times but this is an enjoyable mix of plot and spice. I enjoyed the magic system being added into the history we already know. Loved their relationship and the way it built throughout the book. Thanks to Netgalley, the author and the punisher for the arc.
I was generously given an ARC for review. Bound In Crimson Cord was absolutely written for me. Brynnen is a wonderfully realized, fully fleshed out protagonist that had me hooked from the very first chapter. I adore how this book weaves true to life history with a deliciously gruesome new timeline with vampires. the vampires themselves are allowed nuance and intrigue while maintaining aspects of that keep them frightening and sexy. This book is perfect for fans of historical fiction, fantasy and vampires.
Bound in Crimson Cord is a well written historical romance blended with vampires and a unique magical system to create a historical vampire romantasy.
Brynen is a young woman with healing magic that is forced to hide and suppress her powers, living in historical England in the time of Queen Elizabeth. The current political structure only allows nobility to have and access magic their magic. For a commoner to do so means the loss of their magic at minimum, or death if they fight the stripping of their power.
When England is invaded by the vampire kingdom and Brynen discovers she is the fated mate to their commander, she is forced to navigate this new world and chose a side. Does she give into her growing feelings for Yasha, the commander, or does she aid her people with an attempt to take back their country, which would result in the reinstatement of the same laws that had oppressed Brynen and those like her?
Full of political intrigue, moral dilemmas, and an under current of how those in power stay in control by oppressing those that they consider beneath them, this is a complex story of loss, standing up for what you believe in and daring to love someone that requires you to reevaluate who you are and what is worth fighting for.
The story definitely swept me up and I found myself seeing things from both Brynen and Yasha's perspective. Both characters are forced to choose between their fated love or continuing in their current way of life. The author did a great job of weaving everything together with political under tones that definitely speak loudly in today's environment.
Thank you to Augusta Grey for the opportunity to read this as an ARC. This one definitely left me thinking well after I had finished the book.
I didn’t totally know what I was getting into with this one, but I ended up having such a good time. The blend of historical setting + fantasy + vampires was a fun surprise, and I really liked how the magic and politics layered together as the stakes rose. The atmosphere pulled me in quickly and the tension between the sides of the conflict made things feel heavy in the best way.
That being said, some parts felt a little rough or under-explained. There were moments when I wanted more clarity around the hierarchy/world structure and how things worked. A few scenes that should’ve landed emotionally moved too fast, while other parts dragged just a bit. Not enough to ruin the experience, but enough that I noticed.
But the characters? They carried this book for me. I loved the FMC’s resolve and her struggle between loyalty, survival, and desire. And Yasha… a literal puddle for her. I ate that dynamic up every time it appeared. Soft for her while being feared by everyone else? Inject that into my bloodstream.
Even with some uneven pacing and places that could’ve used more explanation, I’m really glad I picked this up. I was invested, I cared about the characters, and I’m excited to see where the story goes next.
i loved everything about this book. like everything about it. i’m not typically a historical fiction reader but this drew me in with VAMPIRES. and boy oh boy am i so glad i decided to be an arc reader for this.
brynen is such a wonderful fmc like no note chef’s kiss i adore her she can do no wrong. her internal conflict and worry about potentially swapping one oppressor for another felt so real and fleshed out. her attraction to yasha and the way that tension built was so delicious.
and yasha…bi king vamp daddy i love you so. he is a YEARRRNEEERRR (all caps is necessary actually, yes). he is so down bad it’s actually ridiculous. a big ol’ softie underneath those red eyes and fangs and i just ate him up.
i also loved the world building and the politics of mortals and vampires alike it was woven so masterfully. i am so so excited for the next book and to see where this story goes next because hello that ending ?!?
What a refreshing take on vampire fiction! This builds something sharp, political, and morally tangled and uses a historical fantasy setting to do it. The world-building is easily the standout here. Instead of romanticized immortals lurking in the shadows, these vampires are conquerors, sweeping through human lands and establishing themselves as the new ruling force in an effort to free their oppressed classes from their nobility. At least on paper, right? There is an expected system of control (a literal blood tithe) and despite the attempts to ethically source (no infirm, no children, vampire must control themselves, etc), it's not exactly something you could decline. There is a murky sort of ethics to this world that I really enjoyed. I loved how Augusta Grey leans into that dynamic rather than trying to soften it.
Brynen and Yasha are both caught in that gray area: she’s a healer hiding dangerous secrets, he’s the High Commander of the invading force. Their connection is as much about survival and uneasy alliance as it is about attraction, and I appreciated how the book never lets you forget that they’re on opposing sides. The fated mates angle, which can often feel too convenient, actually works here because it’s layered with distrust, resentment, and reluctant chemistry. At least on her end. Yasha is delightfully awkward with her, which makes him far more charming than I expected.
While I found the pacing lagged a bit in the middle and it lost my attention a little compared to the beginning and end, I still enjoyed myself. This is the kind of book that reminds you that “good” and “evil” are often just stories we tell ourselves. And with that ending, I know it will continue to build on that.
Unique, slow-burning, and richly imagined, Bound in Crimson Cord delivers a morally gray fantasy with fangs (sorry, I couldn't help myself).
Thanks to the author for the complimentary copy. This review is voluntary and all opinions are my own.
Bound in Crimson follows Brynen, a commoner hiding her power to heal from the Crown. But when the Witch Finder catches her using her magic, she is sent to be burned at the Tower. When an ancient enemy attacks, Brynen is temporarily saved only to be enlisted by the High Commander of the vampire invaders. The closer she gets to the commander, Yasha, the more she realizes she wants him. But with so many secrets lingering around the vampire’s intentions and the deposed nobles trying to regain power, she’s caught in the middle.
I love a good vampire book—especially during fall! The twists in this book are seriously top notch! I was hooked from the first page and the stakes in this book just keep rising. It was such a wild ride and incredibly entertaining. I loved the writing style—the author is very talented, and I am so excited to read more from them. I loved how the historical fiction element was woven so effortlessly with the vampires.
Brynen is a great main character. She’s so strong and driven. Her journey is so emotional, and her character felt so real. She was very conflicted—rightfully so—and I thought the author did an amazing job dealing with the complex emotions and situation she’s in. I adored Yasha. I love a powerful, brooding vampire and he was written so well. I loved how much he cared for Brynen. Their romance was really well done and had me swooning!
Overall, if you love vampires, enemies to lovers, and an alternate history, this is definitely the book for you!
‼️I received an ARC copy of this book from the author for free‼️
This book is absolutely stunning! I loved it so much and you can definitely tell that a lot of love and research went into this book. I love Brynen and Yasha so much and it’s a really good balance of spice and plot. If you like historical fiction with a vampire twist and a great magic system then this is for you. I also really enjoyed the political side of everything and how it wasn’t just romance. The MMC and FMC also make many mistakes and I love that they grew and learned from them. 10/10 book 2/5🌶️ 5/5🌟 can’t wait to see what happens next!
As someone who's always been a tiny bit of a nerd about Elizabethan London, when I saw Hampton Court Palace... I admit I had a bit of a nerd moment and decided instantly that I needed to read this.
And I have absolutely no regrets on reading this, because the way this absolutely blew me out of the water.
Vampires? Check.
London? Check.
Even better... Elizabethan London? Consider me sold.
Brynen has never been able to use her magic safely... even though she would love to be able to help those around her. But those with her kind of powers are prosecuted and sent off to the Tower of London... where their powers are removed. Witch Finders roam in search of those with powers, and she does not wish to be grabbed as her parents were so long ago.
She has settled for a life as a simple apprentice, even though she despises the widow for her ways of using simple tonics, or rancid oils to pass off as help to the poor. The widow claims she is doing good, but she sees through her ways and sees her for the vile person that she is.
Until one day, Brynen is tasked with a delivery of these so-called miracles to her friend's alms house... and sees her patient as one of a pair of twins. Her heart falls, and she decides to use her magic to aid the twins.
And the Witch Finders take her away to the Tower... the same fate her parents suffered.... or so she thinks, until the Lord Essex then has her pulled out of the tower, supposedly to help the Queen on her defense of London aganist the Undead... against the vampires... to use her previously held back powers in service to Her Majesty the Queen.
Except that's when her whole life shifts... the vampires hold the crown after easily defeating the queen's forces, and now she finds herself not only as chief physick, but in a position of wealth, power, and respect.
The vampires will guard her with their lives...
And not only that, but she is the vampiric High Commander's fated mate...
Dazzlingly dark, with beautiful historical references to Hampton Court Palace (HCP), its history, and even some touches on HCP's haunted history.... Augusta blends these elements of spicy romance, historical events, and yearning for each other into a beautifully dark fictional work and then goes on to create an amazingly complex magic system, way of life, and a London setting that has me yearning to know more. Her vampires have all of the standard mythos, but Augusta blends new elements and new aspects in to make her vampires truly original, and on top of that builds a deliciously complex political system of three clans who always seem to be at each other's throats like siblings to some degree.
Bound in Crimson Cord blew me away, and I am eager to learn more of the Terra Noxa...
Thank you to Netgalley ,Bracken Wilde Books, Victory Editing Co-op, and the talented Augusta Grey for this copy in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own, and the rest of my reviews can be found at: https://littlereapling.wixsite.com/fa....
✨️ARC✨️ From the very first page of Bound in Crimson Cord, I was hooked. Brynen Harlow's journey is an emotional rollercoaster, one that took me to unexpected places and kept me on the edge of my seat from start to finish. Brynen is a character who feels so real, so raw, and yet so deeply conflicted that I couldn’t help but see a reflection of myself in her. She is caught between two impossible choices: betray her country or betray her heart. It’s a position no one would ever want to find themselves in, yet Brynen navigates this inner turmoil with a complexity that makes her both frustrating and entirely relatable.
I found myself constantly wanting her to make a decision - to choose aside, already! Yasha's side preferably. But as the story progressed, it became clear that, just like her, it would have taken me quite some time to reconcile such a monumental dilemma. The tension in her in her internal conflict is palpable, and it's impossible not to empathize with her struggle. The stakes couldn’t feel higher, and every time I thought she was inching toward an answer, the story would twist in a way that left me gasping.
Then there’s Yasha Darkov. Yasha, oh Yasha. The brooding, powerful commander of the invading vampire forces, a man who’s so terrified of messing things up with Brynen that, of course, he ends up messing everything up. His vulnerability was such a surprise in a character like him, and I couldn’t help but feel for him as he tried -mostly unsuccessfully- to balance his fierce commanding ways with his desire to be a good mate. Yasha is so conflicted, so human in his fears, and that's what made him such an incredible character. There were moments where I wanted to shake him and scream, "Just be honest with her already!" But at the same time, I completely understood why he was so hesitant. That vulnerability made him so easy to root for.
The twists in this book - oh, the twists! Just when I thought I had everything figured out, something would happen that would completely flip my expectations. It was the kind of rollercoaster I didn’t want to get off. The stakes were constantly rising, and I was on the edge of my seat the entire time.
At its core, Bound in Crimson Cord is a story about choice, loyalty, and love in a world where nothing is ever simple. Brynen’s ability to heal is both a gift and a curse, and it’s the catalyst for the dangerous, unpredictable world she’s thrown into. As the vampires take over London and the nobles scheme in the shadows, the tension between these forces builds, and Brynen herself at the center of it all. With every passing page, the lies, betrayals, and secrets only deepen, and yet Brynen’s heart remains her compass, pulling her in a direction she fears to follow.
This book is a powerful emotional journey that I won’t forget anytime soon. Brynen and Yasha’s relationship is as fiery and complex as the world around them, and the tough decisions they face feel so human, even in a supernatural setting. The plot twists keep you guessing, and the stakes couldn’t be higher. If you love characters who are deeply flawed and utterly human, even in the midst of magic and bloodshed, Bound in Crimson Cord is a must-read. I can’t wait to see where the next chapter takes us! Thank you, Augusta Grey and BookFunnel, for the opportunity to read and review this wonderful book.
This is a book you want to savor. Take your time, embrace the intricate details, and appreciate the historical research that went into to developing this breathtakingly beautiful world.
Augusta Grey just gave us the gift readers have been begging someone to create - the closest modern-day book I’ve found that recreates the feeling of watching Bram Stoker’s Dracula for the first time and falling madly in love with a genre that wraps you in candlelight and velvet shadows, where love is as eternal as it is doomed.
The yearning, to have a man like Yasha Darkov on his knees before you would be a collision of hunger and reverence, impossible to forget.
Brynnen and Yasha are quite a match - her fiery spirit and strong convictions challenge not only the High Commander, but anyone who’s ever doubted or looked down on her.
They are a collision of hearts fated to burn, even if it only leaves ashes behind.
I found myself reading in the middle of the night if I couldn’t sleep then regretting it when the alarm went off.
*I received an advanced copy of the book for free.
From the very first post that popped up on my FYP, I knew Bound in Crimson Cord had my name all over it. So when Augusta Gray opened ARC sign-ups, I didn’t even blink, I just hit apply.
Set in Elizabethan era London, this historical Romantasy blends, vampires, witches, and political chaos in a way that actually works.
Yasha Drakov, vampire High Lord, and unexpected cinnamon roll, crosses paths with Brynen Harlow, a healer hiding her magic in a world that burns women for having it. When she’s dragged into Queen Elizabeth‘s palace as war brews, their fates tangle in ways that are equal parts, romantic and dangerous.
I loved the mix of lush world building, a magic system that felt fresh, and all the political scheming beneath the surface. There’s love, betrayal, moral messiness and a quiet commentary about power, and the people who never get to have it.
If you like your fantasy with a dash of history, fated love, and a vampire who will ruin you with tenderness, this one’s worth keeping an eye on
I was lucky enough to receive an ARC version. I loved history mixed fantasy. To me it read like a what if could have happened in some moments because of this. I was hooked from beginning and already need more. The perfect amount of spice and plot keep my wanting for more of each. I love that all the characters are strong, and make you see their point of view love them or hate them in good ways of course. already need book 2 and the 1st one isn't officially out yet. lol
Thank you to the author for sending me an ARC e-read of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This was my first dip into a vampire storyline since my years of reading Twilight (when they were first released), and it was on a complete other level! Make no mistake, this is not a teenage romantasy novel! Our FMC, Brynen, has suffered hardships and is desperately trying to buy her way out of her apprenticeship whilst hiding her magic from the sstern and cruel owner. Having raised the money, a good turn sees her betrayed and sent to the tower until an impending vampire invasion alters her fate, giving her a front row seat once they arrive. I quite liked Brynen's stubborn and fearless nature. Her hard upbringing has made her a force to be reckoned with, and not even a vampire army can dull her spark! I found reading and learning all about vampire lore really interesting, in particular about the bonds they have with their mate. The time and devotion shown to courting were swoon worthy and will leave readers lining up for a match. There's attention to detail throughout, be it in the description of gore in a battlefield or a spicy bedroom scene, and although not all language used was to my personal taste, it made the story on the pages come to life. The ending had me thinking ahead to book 2 and the future of several side characters with potential for bigger parts to come.
In the enchanting blend of historical romantasy, experience the captivating journey of Brynen, a commoner with hidden healing powers, entangled in a daring romance with a vampire. The story delves into Brynen's struggle with loyalty, love, and the ultimate sacrifice, weaving magic and romance into a spellbinding narrative. Secrets unravel as Brynen faces impossible decisions, torn between trust and betrayal, hope and despair. The novel will leave you breathless, with emotions ranging from longing to heartbreak, holding you in its grip even after the final page.
I think this is my first time reading a historical romantasy. Honestly, it was a bit hard to get into at first and I didn’t fully understand what was happening.
However, I’m such a sucker for Yasha and Brynen’s interactions. Yasha is so down bad for her. Plsss, the way he yearns for her!!!
He nodded, kneeling down before her once again and laying his head in her lap.
Even if it didn’t fully click for me, the story itself is good and I’m glad I gave it a try.
ARC Coming soon to your Bookshelf and E Reader Bound in Crimson Cord when I start reading it felt like Pirates Of The Caribbean with Vampires and Witches , and I was not expecting the Old English that really set the story for its timeline, it's something new and exciting and really happy I was able to read it. Bound in Crimson Cord is available now on Amazon for Pe Order just in time for spooky season I am looking forward to what comes next
DNFing this. I tried to push through and read bit by bit but I think it's just not my type of reading. I tried to keep reading for the sake of the romance, but everything going on around can't seem to keep me interested enough
I received this as an ARC, and I was so happy I got to read it early because it was highly anticipated for me and it lived up to my expectations. I feel like the author did an amazing job marketing this book. What I read was exactly what I would have expected to read for the most part.
I am not the biggest history reader, but that didn’t matter to me in this book. It was all woven in so seamlessly I didn’t even notice. It has such a unique take on vampirism and I love that the author put a unique twist on a concept so many love. It also has a unique magic system that I have never read about before (or at least a different take on this type of magic).
The female main character has a struggle between where her loyalties lie, and I felt like the conflict was very genuine.
I will definitely be buying myself a hard copy of this book when it releases October 15! Huge props to this author!
As someone who's new to ARC reads (this was my 2nd) I was very impressed. I kept thinking "This is just like a traditionally published book..." My only complaint is that the other books are not out and I can't stay in their world longer 😆
I really enjoyed this ARC read! Author Augusta Grey created such a beautiful, dark historical fantasy that I just ate up! I especially liked the dual POV. The FMC is feisty, strong, passionate, a healer, and will do what's needed to survive while helping others. The MMC is swoon-worthy with his serious demeanor while balancing his need and yearning for his fated mate in a tumultuous time and circumstances. I enjoyed the world building, magic, dialogue, spice, and story overall! Well worth the read! You can pre-order on Amazon now! Kindle release October 15, 2025 on Amazon 🙌
According to the author, this is book 1 of a series where the focus of each book will be on a different couple with character cross over, including Yasha and Brynen. Each book will be set in a different time period. There are also some spicy novellas to be released between each full-length book. So exciting!
I was hooked from the jump. This is a historical piece wrapped in fantasy. I was cautious going in because I personally shy away from “real life”. Grey impressed me by merging the past with her fantasy world, that was extremely satisfying for my taste. This is how you do it folks! There was a great flow between this history and fantasy, which I can tell Grey paid great attention too. There was action and suspense and also coziness.
The FMC was real and relatable, and held her ground. The MMC had me melting. I do wish there was more in regard to their love story. I feel it was a bit rushed, and would have benefited from a slower pace. The bit of spice was well placed and enhanced the story.
Overall this book was enjoyable, and I will definitely recommend! Can’t wait to read more by Augusta Grey!
“I want it, I want you. You savage bastard”
I was lucky to receive this free ARC from the author, for honest feedback.
All her life, Brynen Harlow, a magician with the power to heal, has had to hide her gift. Magic is only for nobles, not ordinary citizens like her. However, when she carelessly reveals her gift and the Witch Finders arrest her, she faces the pyre. But when the invaders, the vampires of Terra Nox, arrive in London and end Queen Elizabeth's reign, she escapes the pyre and finds herself as Headphysick. The commander of Terra Nox, the dark Yasha Darkov, does everything he can to convince Brynen that the reign of terror is over and that the vampires will bring a new, better life for the citizens of England. But can she trust the vampire who makes her heart beat faster, or does she owe her loyalty to her country?
Bound in Crimson Cord is set in the 16th century under the reign of Queen Elizabeth, when vampires land in England as a conquering force. Woven into actual historical events, the story is thus a historical romantic fantasy adventure.
“You are the apex of all my desires made flesh, Brynen Harlow [...]”
Brynen Harlow is a strong-willed, mature personality who bravely stands up to the vampire commander, yet still has serious doubts about where her ultimate loyalty lies. The conflict between whether the previous reign of terror is truly over or whether the vampires are now simply the new rulers under old rules is a central theme of the story.
Yasha, the steadfast and experienced commander of the invaders, on the other hand, is so lovesick and yet uncertain in his courtship that you really feel for him—he was definitely my favorite character in the novel. He is an experienced and hardened soldier, and only shows his soft side to her.
The historical aspect and the actual characters and events were a nice twist and showed the myth of vampires in a refreshingly different setting as a military force conquering continents.
Nevertheless, I personally found the pacing of the novel too fast; months pass in the novel, but it feels like only a few days or weeks. I would also have liked to find out much more about the vampire regime and the different clans. Furthermore I would have liked more depth to really empathize with the characters, a few more scenes in which the two grow closer - I wish it would all be a more fleshed out. It seems as if this is the start of a series; perhaps we will learn more about the vampires and the Brynen and Yasha again.
The story is for fans of spicy romance, yearning, historical events, new aspects of the vampire myth, and a unique magic system.
Many thanks to the team at Grey, Victoria Editing, and NetGalley for the free ARC.
This is a review of the ARC version, so things may have changed.
I was impressed and drawn in by the author's hook for the book's universe: what if vampirism was an STD? The second hook being that this universe takes place in Elizabethan England was also novel to me.
The hook, however, was explained much more tastefully than I thought. Ms Grey worked to humanize the colonizers, in that the vampires were selective in whom they chose to pass on the disease. It is reminiscent of selective breeding. A colonizer classic.
The Elizabethan alternate universe is so interesting to me, as I enjoy authors who do explore what-ifs in history. Familiar figures like Elizabeth I, Robert Devereux, and William Cecil have key roles in the plot, and Ms Grey will make you feel things for them.
There is a fated mates system, where the vampire half can acutely feel the human half's pain in times of extreme distress. The bonding system is ritualistic and tenuous, where it can be severed if not completed. I am naturally interested to know how disastrous the severing would be, or what would happen if the ritual failed to seal the bond. I was happy to learn there will be multiple books within this universe.
The magic system was explained throughout the development of the story, which I loved reading about. Different magic types use different ways of expression. This first book explored the main character's healing system, and teased other such abilities like elementals, and necromancy. I hope to learn more of how other types are expressed.
The pace overall was planned beautifully. For a book that made vampirism an STD, I was bracing myself for violence, but I was relieved to find there is no sexual violence in this first book. The author was very implicit that her vampires are civilized colonizers. That is to say they are not above killing to conquer, but a line is drawn in how they spread their disease. Yasha is someone I hoped I could have broken, which is crazy to say of someone else's character. Brynen is a strong lead who does not really need a man in her life, but she stumbled into a relationship anyway due to the supernatural forces governing the fated. Her approach to this relationship is clinical and it endeared me to her.
The spice content is minimal, but there is explicit, penetrative sex that is deliciously written. Very nice.
Overall, it was an enjoyable read. Thank you very much for the opportunity.
I received this book as an ARC for review. As this is my first ARC review I didn’t really know what to expect going in to it. It was described to me as a historical fiction with vampires and I am a sucker for a period piece so here we are. It has been a good long while since I was fully immersed in a story like I was with this one. Like one of those books that makes you mad you have to work a day job because it means less reading time? Yeah. That. It was great. I really love the magic system and would really like to see deeper explorations of it in future books. The vampires are so cool! I enjoyed the way the factions are organized and the stepping away from the very tired “every vampire has a special power” trope. We’re turning vamps based on logic on how they will contribute to the clan. Hell yeah! As a picky connoisseur of vampire lore, I will probably rave about this for the next decade at minimum. Romance wise, is this the most salacious book I have read? No, I use to read fan fiction on quizilla back in the day. It’s hard to find anything that will compare. HOWEVER, it was certainly steamy enough for me to ask myself “am I really ace, or is my type just socialist flavored vampires?”
Okay, now for the cons. (I’m sorry) The time progression in this book is a little rough. I found myself wondering how fast events were taking place and exactly how much time passed between one big thing and the next. It was revealed eventually. I just feel like this could have been executed a little better. The way the fated mates bit was brought up, was a little askew. Like it read like it was just kind of thrown in the and then we don’t get much of an explanation until much later in the book. I realize this may have been intended to keep the reader in the dark as much as the FMC for like immersion purposes. So this could be all personal as I like reading a book and going “I know something you don’t know” as I watch the main characters fumble about trying to figure each other out. I still got that just with a lot more “why won’t he just f***ing tell her already?!” Because I also wanted to know.
Overall, if I could do 4.5 stars on here, I would. This was a great debut novel and I can’t wait to read what comes next. I am very grateful to have been included as an ARC reader. There was a clear passion for this story and you can really see that in the descriptions, the world building, and all the little nuances that made this all come together.
I really enjoyed reading this! The world and magic was the most interesting aspect to me. The first half of the book and the last 25% were perfect, but there was a little chunk in the middle that felt a little stagnant, but I think that is mostly due to my preferences.
As far as the plot goes: A liberating/conquering vampire empire taking over Europe? A healer sent to burn for witchcraft in Elizabethan England? sign. me. up.
I LOVED this world. It is an alternate Elizabethan England where magic is real and vampires from the continent threaten to attack. I really want to know more about the different types of magic in this world because once I thought I had the magic system all figured out, we would be introduced to another type of magic.
Our main character, Brynen, is a secret witch healer who uses her power for good and it discovered. She has a good and just heart, but struggles with deciding where her loyalties lie. While she's trying to figure out what she wants, she still has the ability to stand up for what she believes is right even if it pits her against those in power.
The love interest, Yasha, despite leading an army of vampires to conquer an entire continent, is also just. While the vampires have a righteous cause, they are still not perfect. Yasha also struggles with where is loyalties lie as he is trying to navigate between doing what's right and doing his duty. He's protective over the ones he loves, even if sometimes he struggles to allow them their independence and autonomy.
I really liked the two main characters: Bress and Sevina. I enjoyed Bress's Irish heritage and hatred of the English. Sevina had a lot of potential because of her magic, but I feel like we didn't see as much of her.
I wish we got to see more of Brynen's human friends (even though there weren't that many). I found Nadia really interesting and I'm glad we got to learn more about her closer to the end.
I wish the romance was a bit of a slower burn. We see Brynen struggle to figure out where her loyalties lie, but her heart is set pretty quickly. Because of that, I found myself enjoying the earlier stages of their relationship a lot more. I'm not always the biggest fan of fated mates, so I'm not sure how I felt about that aspect of this story.
Major Themes: Class- Only the nobility was allowed to practice magic, peasants were convicted of witchcraft if they used magic. The Vampires, then, only killed the nobles and took the peasants into their empire. Freedom/empire- The Vampires see their conquest as one that frees the common people from the oppression of the established hierarchies. At the same time, they are in the ones with all of the power and aren't always "peaceful" rulers. Fate and love- despite their differences (or perhaps their similarities), Brynen and Yasha were fated to be together, and even though they go through some trials and tribulations, their love conquers all.
I honestly have so much to say about Bound in Crimson Cord that I might end up rambling, but this book truly feels like a masterpiece in many ways. First off, the writing style is what initially hooked me. Augusta Grey is a skilled wordsmith whose prose is both immersive and entrancing, demanding your full attention and rewarding it with beautifully crafted sentences that perfectly capture the gothic and atmospheric mood of the story. Set in early 1600s England, the dialogue and narration stay true to the time period without slipping into modern language, which adds authenticity and depth. The fantasy elements are woven seamlessly into this historical backdrop, enhancing rather than distracting from the setting.
Next, the two main characters blew me away. The female lead is a healing mage with dreams for a better life, and she’s written with so much care and nuance. She’s fair, kind, and understanding—yet far from a cliché or annoying stereotype. Her plus-size identity is mentioned naturally without becoming her entire defining trait, which I appreciated greatly. On the other side, the male lead is a centuries-old vampire slowly conquering Europe, and the dynamic between them is crafted with such respect and tenderness. I loved how the male perspective never objectifies or reduces the heroine, but instead views her with genuine respect and affection—a refreshing and beautiful approach.
The “fated mates” trope is handled with originality and subtlety here. Their relationship isn’t just about instant chemistry or physical attraction; it’s a slow, tender burn that feels deeply emotional and real. Their conversations are heartfelt and romantic, and even the intimate scenes feel meaningful rather than gratuitous—perfectly balanced to enhance the story rather than distract from it.
Overall, Bound in Crimson Cord is a rich, atmospheric novel with compelling characters and a slow-burning romance that lingers. It’s a testament to how historical fantasy can be done with elegance, depth, and heart. I’m eagerly looking forward to the next book and highly recommend this to fans of gothic romance and nuanced fantasy.
If you like a historical-esque romantasy with a yearning commander vampire who is fated for a sassy headstrong witch -> I have a pretty good recommendation for you
I definitely didn't know what to expect going into this book, but I was oh so pleasantly instantly sucked into this world and story. Set in 1601, it brings in a lot of historical elements and makes them shift and bind to the story Augusta is writing in such a compelling way. We get dual POV of Yasha sensing his fated is alive in the world and he is ready to find him or her, and Brynen having absolutely no clue why this super intense vampire commander is suddenly at her beck and call basically giving her the keys to his castle as soon as they meet.
Brynen is such an icon, she is so whitty and sassy but also loyal and determined to learn the truth. "A library, filled with books I cannot read. Yasha, you shouldn't have." THIS PART HAD ME CACKLING she is so unserious and just so straight up sassy to this man that literally everyone else fears and he is giving her moony eyes and it's literally the best thing ever
One part of this book I really enjoyed was Brynen's resolve. She knew she wanted Yasha physically, maybe even emotionally, but she refused to bind herself to him before she had more answers. Despite what her heart wanted, she wanted to make sure she was on the right side of the war, the side that was best for her people; not just the side that brought her to her mate. She was ready to live a life of emptiness - should that life be the best scenario for London & her people
Basically - she a baddie who did end up folding for a sexy vampire commander and YOU KNOW WHAT get your due girl, you deserve it and I can't even blame you; Yasha is a yummy little morally grey vampire and i'd do the same damn thing fr
Thank you Augusta for sending me this book! I am so so so glad you did and that I got to watch Brynen collar Yasha into her lil lap dog IT WAS SO HOT!!!!
This book is a fun cocktail of historical fiction, fantasy, and romance !!
The story takes place in Elizabethan England and it’s clear the author did her research on the era. I thought the way the fantasy was woven into a historical place was well done! I also loved the magic system, particularly how the healing process worked. I just thought the magic system and fantasy elements were unique and integrated really well. The FMC was also refreshing. She knew who she was and stood her ground, she also wasn't afraid to get a little sassy in her own way, which I greatly appreciated. The MMC was your typical soft but only for her, which I love so I ate him up lol
That being said, I did struggle with the first half of the book. The second half was where the action, romance, and overall momentum really picked up, but the beginning lagged in two main ways. First the writing, while eloquent, was also all tell and no show. There were chapters that contained only a line or two of dialogue, if any at all, and the abundance of description about what was happening or how the characters were feeling felt tedious to read at times. I also found the sense of time a little unclear, I couldn’t always tell how much time had truly passed. Second, the vampire hierarchy of their mates/beloved and sires/progenies and how certain vampire societal norms functioned wasn’t explained until much later in the book, or maybe I just didn’t fully grasp it. I just felt like I was constantly trying to figure it out via context clues since it wasn’t explicitly explained.
This book was good and it was an interesting, enjoyable read. I like the way it mixes historical elements with fantasy. I’m interested to see where the rest of the series goes!
*Thank you to Augusta Grey for providing me with an E-ARC of "Bound in Crimson Cord" in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own*
This book takes placed Elizabethan England with vampires! As i reader who loves both genres this book hit the sweet spot by blending fantasy and history seamlessly. The dual view pov gave both MC enough deph and opportunity for character development. I appreciated the fact that the author used the historical correct terminology throughout the novel and great reference for Engeland and its politics in the 1600’s - just with vampires. It highlights the struggles the less privilege and especially women had while the nobels were having the time of their lives. The vampires and their lore are also written very well (i could do with even more lore but have a feeling we will get a lot more in book 2) i also loved the different take on fated mates as well. Brynen has a good sense of humor and a few witty lines, my favourites is “I am such an accomplished liar that I’ve begun to fool myself” and every time she jokes about her own hypocrisy. I appreciate the fact that she is also described as plump in size, and 26 years old. Yasha is a well rounded character who has great growth. This book is written as a third person but its done using the two main MC’s pov so it does not come across as being storybook narrated, it still allows you to feel all the emotions ect with the characters. It’s a slow burn with a spicy scene here and there but overall perfect balance. Very impressed with this debut from Augusta, i will leave you with this line “"I can't decide if you are my savior or my ruin," and say we cannot wait for book two! Thank you Augusta for the arc!
