I really enjoyed this story. The storyline is so close to my own. I lost my first husband when our daughter was four. Learning to let another person in was hard. Allowing myself to be loved and to love again was difficult. Everything was about my daughter. Emily's story is so close to that. Even though there are some differences. I cannot image dealing with grief and also betrayal. I cannot wait to read another book by Brittany.
Romance trope: second chance Series: Juniper Ridge Length: 306 pages
Plot: Emily is married with a child when her husband is killed in a car accident. At the same time, her ex from high school moves back to town. She isn't ready for a second chance at love just now, but when she is? He'll be waiting.
Commentary: Lots of repetition - most chapters are a repeat of the chapter before, the exact same thing but from a different character. The author has already acknowledged this as something she's working on, so moving on. The one thing I wish we had is some closure with respect to the husband's cheating. It was something painful but Emily never got any more information. There was nothing in the husband's effects, there was nothing from the other woman ever again. It woul dhave been nice to know that he cut things off with her (so maybe we could feel a tiny bit of sympathy for him losing his life right when he was trying to make things right) or that he was all in with the ow (so we could hate him more). That might not be realistic, but I think that might have sped things up for the main couple. As it was, we listened to them moan and ruminate for months. Also, why did they even break up? When they talked about it with other people, it sounded like there was a big betrayal and it was the worst thing ever. But when it came down to it, it was just a regular breakup as they were leaving for college?
Brittany Stein’s *Our Second Chance* is such an emotional and heartwarming read that really pulls you in from the start. It’s one of those stories that feels real, messy, and hopeful all at once. The writing is easy to connect with, and it makes you feel like you’re right there with the characters as they try to figure things out and face their past.
Caleb is honestly one of the most compelling parts of the book. He comes across as guarded at first, but as the story goes on, you start to see how much he’s been carrying. His struggles feel genuine, and his growth throughout the story is really satisfying to watch. There’s this constant tension between who he used to be and who he’s trying to become, and it makes his journey feel meaningful instead of rushed.
Emily, on the other hand, brings so much warmth and strength to the story. She’s not just there as a love interest she has her own challenges and emotional depth that make her feel like a fully developed character. You can really see her resilience and how much she’s grown, especially in the way she handles her relationship with Caleb. Their dynamic feels natural, with both the sweet moments and the more difficult ones adding to the realism.
What really makes this book stand out is the chemistry between Caleb and Emily. Their history adds layers to every interaction, and you can feel the mix of tension, hurt, and lingering love between them. It’s the kind of romance that keeps you rooting for them, even when things get complicated. Overall, *Our Second Chance* is a heartfelt, engaging read that’s perfect if you love second-chance romances with strong emotional depth.
I love stories like this! Brittany does a great job of developing her characters and you end up falling in love with them! The main female character is married, then something happens which leaves her raising her daughter on her own. She’s reconnected with someone and when she starts developing feelings, she catches him with someone else. Will she confront him? Or, will she cut her losses and run? If she runs, will he chase after her? I definitely recommend finding out what happens!
I have mixed feelings about this book. Emily was in a really hard position, finding her husband was having an affair shortly before he passed. She went through different relatable emotions that I think anyone would go through in this situation. Not a fan of the phrase "I let out a breath I hadn't realized I'd been holding" much less 5 times! Dual pov, so some scenes essentially repeat with slight differences, I think some of Caleb's could have been taken out.
This book had a lot of potential and I know this is her first book so I gave it the benefit of the doubt, that’s why I gave 3 stars and not less. It never takes me long to read books and I just could not stay interested as every chapter would repeat things from previous chapter. The story about two people who get a second chance is sweet. I did finish the book because I wanted to see how the rest of the book went. I hope next book is better. But Lilly is adorable in this book.
Good story line like a hallmark movie. The book kept me interested. As a new author she should do well keep it up. What I didn't like is when going back and forth from the two main characters. They repeated what you just read from whoever spoke before became annoying so I just skipped over it. It wasn't needed as the storyline was good. Nice beach read. Good luck with your future books you can only grow.
One Second Chance was such a heartfelt and emotional read. The story beautifully captured love, healing, and the deep grief one of the characters experienced after loss, which made the journey feel incredibly real and touching.
It carried a soft, emotional depth that pulled at my heartstrings while still offering comfort and hope throughout the story. The cozy atmosphere and emotional moments made this the perfect fall read — warm, reflective, and unforgettable.
