Fans of The Descendants are going to love this graphic novel!
Not only do we get to see Uma again (she's personally one of my favorites), but Bayron does a wonderful job exploring the complicated emotions Uma faces after becoming one of the good kids. There are themes of friendship, regret, navigating complicated relationships with parents, sibling dynamics and more. Honestly, I'm familiar with the entire franchise because of my 6 year old daughter; however, I do find the concept of the world to be unique and I'm glad that they're expanding the series into a variety of mediums. Asiah Fulmore did such an amazing job with the art which was vibrant, yet soft. Overall, this was a fun read and I'm hoping they do more graphic novels in the future.

High seas adventure mixes with the desire to be true to yourself in a colorful tale.
Ever since Uma tore down the barrier between the villain and hero worlds, she's been a little unsure of her own place in everything. As the daughter of the feared sea witch, Ursula, her path of evil had been clear before, but now, she's marked as a hero by many and has friends in this new world, where villains and heroes are no longer always distinct. She wants nothing more than to figure out her own place in all of it but before she can contemplate too long, she's requested to save some lost students from Auradon Prep. That would be another job for a goodie-two-shoes, but she can't let innocent kids suffer. Add that her mother isn't on board with Uma's new reputation, and things are anything but easy.
This is a quick-paced, graphic novel based on Disney's popular 'The Descendants' series, and it does a lovely job at bring the world to new life. The illustrations are very well done and carry the atmosphere with ease as the color scheme and emotions shift right along with the tale to produce a rounded adventure. Even visually, Uma walks right on the border between good and evil with darker hues and a fitting outfit, but her golden personality shines through making her easy to follow and root for. Her crew offers a bit of humor, while giving a capable impression. But then, the style for each characters fits well to give the tale new life.
The text flows seamlessly as well and works with the illustrations to make each moment clear without growing too wordy. There are moments of action, which grew a little bit hazier in their presentation, but keep the tension high. Uma's contemplation slows everything down but just enough to allow for character depth without pulling the reader out of the story. It makes her relatable and promises much more to come thanks to her tenacious personality. There are hints of romance but only slight whispers, and the message of 'following ones own path' rings loud and clear to add that last Disney touch.
Is a grabbing story, whose pacing makes it hard to put this one down, and it's an easy read, which even more reluctant readers are sure to enjoy.

Fairy tales require a suspension of belief, a willingness to accept the impossible as possible. It gives us a sense of wonder, that magic is real. Tapping into that, Walt Disney adapted these fairy tales for modern day audiences with charming animated musicals and turned them into a set of idealized characters that have been endlessly exploited ever since.
In 2015, that roster of familiar heroes, villains, and comical sidekicks was more than doubled with the creation of Descendants. Here, we stretch our disbelief to accept that all the Disney characters share a universe and now, 20 or so years later, they all magically have offspring of approximately the same age.
Not having children during this run, I knew of the spinoff but didn’t realize how many musicals, short subjects, cartoons, prose, and graphic novels have mined the territory. The sixth such film is due later this year on Disney+, and the latest graphic installment is coming soon.
The focus is on Uma, daughter of Ursula, who is a pirate captain, sailing the seas in and around the United States of Auradon. The theme here is an exploration of acting as one expects of you or carving your own destiny. To the surprise of her VK (Villain Kids) peers, Uma has gone straight, fighting for what’s right, much to her (mostly unseen) mother’s chagrin.
In the sprawling continuity, this is a prequel to Descendants 3 : Rise of the Red, explaining how Uma got to become headmistress of Auradon Prep. It pits her against Captain Hook’s daughter, Harriet, with her beloved friend Harry, son of Hook. What starts as a search-and-rescue mission becomes something more when Hazel kidnaps her sister, CJ, and uses her as bait.
If you’re at all a fan of this franchise, you get it, and can be entertained and captivated. If you’re an outsider, just dipping his senior toe into the realm, you need something annotated, which the graphic novel fails to provide. It expects you to know, which I find insular.
Kalynn Bayron makes her GN debut here and acquits herself well, with good dialogue and nice pacing. The art from Asiah Fulmore mostly works, although there are too many panels that need art direction for clarity. It’s light and carries strong messaging for the tween readership.

A LOST REVENGE is an adventure-filled graphic novel about family expectations, the gray area between hero and villain, and finding your own path. Uma, the daughter of Ursula, is a Villain Kid (VK) and seeking to find her place in the world. This is complicated by the way that she is perceived and what she believes she must or should do. When some kids from Auradon Prep go missing, she is asked to go find them. With her crew, she sets out on this (possibly heroic) adventure.
What I loved: This book tackles some themes that will resonate well with the intended middle grade audience. Children of this age are trying to figure out who they will become amidst a time of changes, much like Uma who is a VK but wants to forge her own path. This inner turmoil is central to the plot and makes her quite a relatable character - even if she also has a pirate ship and crew.
The story has plenty of adventure and intrigue to keep the pages turning, and the artwork does a fantastic job of bringing the story and its emotions to life. Thoughtful use of color in the background helps to set the mood and tone of each scene. The images depict the characters well with lots of emotion in expressions. There are varied use of panel shapes and numbers throughout to keep visual interest and help in conveying more complex scenes.
While there is some non-dialogue text, the words are always carefully chosen and never overpower the images. The amount of words in this one is relatively low, and it makes for a story that is conveyed largely through the images. This is a great characteristic in a graphic novel and perfect for younger middle grade graphic novel lovers.
While the story can be read on its own, having knowledge of the Disney Descendants world would definitely be helpful for immersing in the story and understanding some of the secondary characters.
Final verdict: A LOST REVENGE is an engaging middle grade graphic novel with relatable themes around family expectations and finding your own path.

Following the events after the Disney Descent series, A Lost Revenge is a snapshot of life after the barrier between the Isle of the Lost and Auradon comes down, and now “good” and “evil” can intermingle in both places. The story follows Uma, daughter of the sea witch Ursula, as she decides her next step in life. Once a VK (villain kid), she is overwhelmed by the idea of choosing her own path, free from past concepts of herself. But then King Ben and Queen Mel ask Uma for help in finding a group of Auradon Prep students who have vanished at sea. Uma, though reluctant to seem like a do-gooder, accepts, knowing she and her pirate crew are the best ones for the mission. So they set sail into the high seas, ready to weather storms, face dangerous pirates, and discover a larger plot brewing just over the horizon, all while Uma deals with her own struggle of right vs. wrong and her true calling in life. The graphic novel brings the Disney Descendant characters to life in a fun and vivid art style. The characters have a mix of both cartoon and anime styles, similar to Avatar: The Last Airbender, and the vibrant colors pop off the page, especially blue and purple (both of which compliment Uma’s blue hair, dark clothing, and octopus body). The facial expressions are dynamic and vivid, and action/movement is easy to follow. Overall, a good addition to the Disney Descendants universe. Finally a new descendants book! I’m so excited for the new movie so this book came at the perfect time! I would say this plays before the descendants rise of red movie. This little adventure of Uma and her Crew was so cool and fun to read. 10/10 for every descendants fan!🥰❤️

I enjoyed the story as someone not super familiar with the Descendants franchise. The artwork worked so well, though Uma appeared orange in some lightings.
