"Husbands,
I’ll never get the chance to send this, but… if you’re reading it, that means my plan worked. Find Ma and Pa, and tell them they were the best parents a girl could ever hope for. Tell them that if I’d been given the chance to bring a life into this world—despite kids being gross—I would have raised them to understand that love is worth more than all the gold in the realms and stronger than even the æther the conjurers wield.
Ambrose, make Cato cuddle with you. He’ll claim he hates it, but you and I both know that’s a lie.
Cato, let Ambrose have ten minutes of cuddles before bed and kiss him goodnight. It will keep him tolerable… and it will keep him whole.
Thank you for giving me the brightest moments of my life and for standing beside me through the darkest.
E.A. Fortneaux: Where cotton candy covers contain questionable content—think mayhem and make-outs, all wrapped in lush worldbuilding. She's the mind behind the Obligates of Ærta series, a spicy romance fantasy filled with fate-bound lovers, emotional disasters... and this other guy who is so frustratingly delicious that he’ll keep you up past your bedtime.
She published her debut, Following the Snow, in 2023 as an homage to the strong women who surrounded her growing up—passionate, proud, and a little unhinged. Since then, she’s been weaving realms with threads of passion and unleashing sequels like Snow on the Summit and When Snow Falls, with more releases on the way.
When she’s not writing, Fortneaux is probably caffeinated and covered in dog hair—gardening, researching medieval nonsense, or laughing with her book besties. She writes stories that feel like home—if home had mood lighting, self-love, and lots of kissing.
I am not okay! I swear I spent most of the last like 10 chapters crying a big blubbering mess.
E.A. has done it again, she weaves the most heartbreaking stories with love and laughter. I was not prepared for how deep this final book in the series was going to touch my heart.
I have been a Cato fan since book one and I am still hands down a Cato fan but Ambrose really stepped into his own in this one for me. I still can't stand that other guy, what's his face, with the pierced peen, but I guess I can begrudgingly give him a nod of respect.
I am at an utter loss, I am not ready for this world to end even though I know that we have reached the end of the tangled triad's story. I really hope we will return to this world in the future I have so many things I need to see resolved!
It has been my immense pleasure to arc read this book! I can't wait to see what amazing things E. A. does next!
What a beautiful conclusion to a truly epic romantasy series!
I laughed, I cried, and I sighed.
Shield of Snow was a bittersweet joy to read. I cannot believe this was EA’s first book series. ALL of the books are amazing and I cannot recommend them enough!
If you love spicy romance, if you love epic fantasy, if you love world building, if you love well rounded characters - this series is for you!
I am absofrackinglutely feral about this author and this series, and A Shield of Snow did nothing to calm me down.
This book is not frivolous, nor is it tidy. Its not all rainbows and butterflies. This is a journey carved out of hard choices, grief, loyalty, love, and survival… although I AM grateful for the icing♡
The characters are complex/multilayered, flawed, brilliant, and downright hilarious at times. I didn’t agree with all of their choices, but that’s kind of the point, right? This story isn’t about me (and its not like I always make the best choices myself). It’s about people doing the best they can with what they have...and its raw.
There were sections toward the end that were hard for me to read. For personal reasons, I had to set the book down & come back when I was ready. If you’re sensitive to certain themes, I urge you to read the trigger warnings. (I didn’t… I rarely do… and I take full responsibility for that.)
This story is an emotional rollercoaster, but in true E.A. fashion, it’s delivered with wit, grit, and just the right amount of ṣhīt. ❤️🔥🤣 I love how this woman writes.
This series will live rent free in my mind forever and into the nether.
Read it. You're welcome 😉 . . . . . . Spoiler: Did I mention that E.A. immortalized me, my Pister, and our friend Kristen into this book?! She paused time for us TOGETHER living, breathing, caring... I cannot even begin to explain what this means to me. For those that dont know, Kristen is our friend who introduced me to Ærta & we lost her last August. Those who knew Kristen would understand how incredible of a gift this is....aaaaaand I'm sitting here with tears running down my face AGAIN. I get to interact with her over and over again...forever and ever. Thank you EA 😭♡♡♡

My friend, Kristen, went absolutely feral for this series which meant the rest of us naturally went feral as well. Needless to say, we all fell desperately in love. Deservedly so!
I can’t believe it’s the last book in the series but it has certainly been a whirlwind of emotions with these characters that I’ve come to love so much. Ambrose. My sweet, silly, dramatic Ambrose!! I’ll never, ever forget you and the way you made my sides hurt from giggling like a hormonal teenager.
With book 4, I was so excited to be back in this world. The humor is unmatched. The spice is certainly SPICING and I was again mesmerized by EA Fortneaux’s unbelievable ability to tell a story. Her writing is amazing and the things her mind conjures up truly blows me away. Also… I’ve been calling my daughter sister-bro for a solid 3 days, like bro!
If you’re a romantasy lover, who struggles to choose just one book boyfriend and you live for the witty banter in between the stress inducing moments, this is gonna be your jam!!
I am not great at writing reviews. Tropes? What are those? But I’m here to do my best at articulating why this series is a must read.
The incredible, wonderful EA has graciously allowed me to be a part of this journey since the first book. Finding out I was selected to ARC read Following the Snow was a monumental moment for me. Before this series, I was not a fantasy reader. And my how that quickly changed.
EA delivers epic Romantasy that is easy to digest, wrapped with humor and intrigue. She pulls you into this world gently at first and then takes you by storm. I have fallen in love with the people in these stories. I’ve shared their laughs and their tears. I’ve been in awe and been so stunned I’ve nearly tossed my kindle. And I wish upon every star that I could read it all for the first time again.
Book 4, then end of an “Eira” (see what I did there?). This was my most anticipated read for 2025. When it begins, we pick up just after where book 3 ends. At first you might begin to suspiciously wonder where this is going. Trust the process! Trust the process because the last 20% is going to take you on the most epic ride of your effing life! By the time I finished I felt like I needed a drink, a cigarette, and a talk session.
I have no idea where EA is going from here but rest assured I will be clutching the hem of her tunic and holding on to make sure I go with her!
Thank you for giving me this world and the people in it!
A Shield of Snow was everything I hoped it would be and more! E.A. Fortneaux wrapped up the AErta series in such a powerful, heart-tugging, nerve-wracking way that I was glued to the pages from start to finish. I laughed and held my breath more times than I can count, yet somehow, the humor sprinkled throughout still landed perfectly in all the right moments.
Ambrose absolutely stole my heart (as always!).I loved seeing the relationship between Eria, Cato, and Ambrose grow. The emotional depth in this book is unmatched, and you truly feel every victory and heartbreak like you are there.
E.A. Fortneaux has such a gift for blending wit, tension, and emotion seamlessly, and this finale proves it. I’m both satisfied and already missing this world. I can’t wait to see what she has up her sleeve next!
An absolute must read by EA Fortneaux! Book 4 in her Obligates series, this entire series had me on the edge of my seat while reading. A Shield of Snow is the final book and epic conclusion to this amazing story. If you are a fan of fantasy and romance, this is a series and author you have to pick up!
I fell in love with this whole series and was waiting a long time to read this book. The characters have gone through so much to get to the end of their journey and every step of the way was filled with adventure. I was in tears throughout most of the end of this book as our beloved characters received closure. Eria, Cato, and Ambrose show up strong, as always. I will praise EA for her body positivity as long as I live. She gives us a plus size queen who knows her worth and never lets anyone tell her differently.
We have seen these three go through so much together. As their love grew and changed throughout this series, I loved being along for the ride. EA does a wonderful job in mixing humor, tension, witty banter, and heated spice. There were so many moments I would pop up while reading to ensure I was fully engaged in the plot line. And while the love between our MCs is strong and fierce, they are comfortable on their own, growing as individuals.
I will admit it is hard to write a review without spoilers, because there is so much goodness in this series. Read this series, read this author, and fall in love with the amazing world EA has created!
As always, review any author notes before reading.
What to Expect: ✨ Enemies to Contractual Lovers ✨ Secret Identity ✨ Insta Fake Love ✨ Sacrifice for Love ✨ Meet - Cringe ✨ "Don't you dare leave me."
This series had me live at least six to seven lives. It was one of the most beautiful, funny, tragic, and impactful reads. Before this book came out, my favorite in the series wad Snow on the Summit...but A Shield of Snow is my all time favorite now.
One of the many things I appreciate about this series and this book in particular is the relationship journey between Eira, Ambrose, and Cato. We see them go thru various ups and downs, the fantastic honeymoon phase, the shifts in partner dynamics, the ugly times, and even the individual journeys that affect their relationship. One of my most favorite quotes reflects not only their relationship but also connects to my own personal journey in this life.
“Not scars, my love.” He traced my fingers over his elbow and down Ambrose’s side. “These are a map of our journey. The twists and turns, the valleys and the mountains. The path that led us home.”
I SOBBED reading that. It was the absolute perfect moment and described their love journey accurately. There are so many things about this book I appreciated. I loved how slavery was not excused nor glorified. I loved that there were still nods to the loved ones lost in past books. I deeply appreciated how complicated some characters were and how feelings towards them were valid. I deeply appreciated how one's right to live their life as freely as possible and their choices in this world mattered.
While I'm sad that this is the end of the journey and would love to enjoy one more piece of cake (iykyk), this wad the absolute perfect ending to this series. 100/100 stars.

I can’t believe the journey with these characters has ended. The trip has been wild and messy and stressful and funny and I have loved it. Like the first 3 books in the series, Eira explores the human condition - love, loss, friendship, espionage, 2 husbands, adventurous sex - and we get to explore it with her!
Fortneaux is hilarious as well as a master of her craft. She paints complex and immersive scenes I can practically feel….and she names the dog that belongs to Catomandus Cato-dog-us. This woman makes me both have to stand while reading bc I can’t possibly sit through this part….as well as make me kick my feet and giggle. Ambrose has golden retriever energy while also being the hunkiest man in existence. Cato is the ultimate protector and OMG did I want to smack him through a good portion of this book but don’t worry, he gets it together. Eira is a full and complete woman who loves her men but her world absolutely does not revolve around them. She is strong and bold and deeply feeling.
“My goal, Grandmother, is a lifetime of sharing snacks, cuddles, and dicks.” Me too, Eira. Me too.
I struggled SO HARD to finish this book, and not because it wasnt the high-quality, captivating fabulousness we’ve come to expect from E.A.... I just wasn’t ready for it to be over! Before this series, I wasn't a fantasy/romantasy reader. I am super neurospicy and I often found complex world-building too much to handle. But E.A. has a magical way of making fantasy digestable. She doesn't throw you in to her world, she gently takes your hand and leads you through the journey. This last book picks up shortly after where we left off in book three and focuses more on the individual growth and journeys of Eira, Ambrose, and Cato before braiding their narratives together in one hell of an ending. I’m forever grateful to E.A. for letting me be part of this world. I don't know where she plans to go next, but that epilogue definitely felt ambiguous. One thing is certain, come nether or high water, I plan to be there for the next chapter.
I have read the entire Aerta book series and it is such an amazing world building. In this final installment in Ambrose, Cato, and Eira, everyone is in a different place when the book finds itself. Eira is determined to bring this saga to an end because of all of the maneuvering of the Primus-King and all he costs her. The group has seen a lot of loss because of all of the political maneuvering. In Gaea, they must keep their identities hidden. If not, it can be their end. It’s hard to write a review without giving away amazingly written plot points that keep you on your toes until the end. I love this book and the entire series. The love of this triad is built on trust and knowing what is in your heart. 100% recommend and this will be one that I reread many times!!
“Not scars,my love.“ He traced his fingers over his elbow and down Ambrose’s side. “These are a map of our journey. The twists and turns, the valleys and the mountains. The path that led us home.”

Gosh, what a beautiful ending to this series. This will forever be one of my favorite series. It will make you laugh, make you cry, break your heart, and then put it all back together. I found myself not wanting to fly through the story because I didn’t want this series to be over.
That epilogue though… 👀 Who knew one sentence could have me reeling to know what E.A Fortneaux has up her sleeve next.
I’m so glad to have been a part of the street team/arc team throughout this journey!
I received the first book of this series as a gift and devoured it. I love this triad. Their banter and spice are so much fun! I love Cato and Ambrose for so many reasons. Cato is burning passion and Ambrose is giddy and playful lust.
This book started a bit slow for me, because I wanted them to all be in the same place. (Greedy, I know..) However, it absolutely exceeded my expectations. I will miss these 3 so much but I am looking forward to more from E.A. This series drew me in and is a wonderful why choose romantasy that I will recommend to anyone looking for a spicy adventure.
Thank you E.A for allowing me to be an ARC reader!
I so enjoyed hearing from these characters and watching their story play out. My favorite part of this series is the pure detail that the author puts into her books. I love the societies, the intricacies of the cultures, and how true the characters stay to themselves. I do wish there was a quick summary of each culture or a quick character glossary in the book. Sometimes my brain forgets the details! Also, I thought the plot was a little slow to get going at the beginning, but it definitely picked up. All in all, a fantastic series!
Wow, I don’t think that many books have had me rooting for the love story at the end quite like this one did. The beginning was a wee bit slow for me, but I think that I just wanted everything to begin as spicy as it ended. However, the separation from the characters was absolutely necessary for their character development and for the overall storyline. I loved the twist and turns of this book, and the moral challenges that were required for our three beloved characters. I would definitely recommend this book to my friends for a fun spicy twisty romantic see read!
This was an epic finally to this amazing series! As always E.A. managed to rip my heart out in all the best ways humanly possible. I implore you to pick this series up and binge read them all because it is so worth the read. I wasn’t prepared for the array of emotions this book brought on but I’m all the better for it now! This was a 5⭐️ read for me . This truly was my favorite of the series, there was so much character growth and I enjoyed watching this trio’s dynamics unfold as the book progressed.
I have not been okay since I finished this book for all the right reasons! What a fantastic, epic, and heart pounding way to finish up this series. I have been sobbing since I finished it and I know I was suspicious the entire way of TOM but Oh gods that man. I will re-read these books for years to come.
This is definitely a wild ride. A STUNNING conclusion to the Obligates series. I can't think of a better ending to this story than what the author has delivered. every action , twist and turn is well deserved and punctual. These characters and there love will forever live in my head!
I wish I had the proper words to express my feelings for this series…
From the beginning, I was hooked. From the delicious bodies to the intrigue and guile, the Obligates of Ærta captured my heart and settled into my psyche. I grew to equally love and despise characters like I lived among them and I am incredibly sad for the ending of this season.
I can only hope that EA will bring us back into her world by making more stories down the road. In the meantime, start with Following the Snow - immerse yourself in one of the best series to grace the pages! Be prepared for banter, outright hilarity, drama, intrigue, political bullshit, lovely romance, hotter than sin spice, some tenderness and tears, and a whole lot of badass female energy! These books have everything a reader craves! I cannot wait to see what she writes next!
Taking a big deep breath before leaving this review. So many emotions when I started the last book of this series. I was already so distraught before I ever started this book. You see this is the last one, the end of Eira, Ambrose, Cato and Septimus being ever so close to me all the time. They are my family, my friends, the best of the best heroes you will ever read. To love three men, each so different but together perfection. I will get some glares but Septimus just held a piece of me. Not sure why but the moment I saw his gorgeousness how could I look away.. Ambrose grew so much as a character in this fourth book. I loved the way E.A. shaped and moulded this character. A lot of the readers loved this character simply because he was the true definition of a cinnamon roll. Eira always knew what he needed when he was stressed or struggling with something happening in his kingdom. Cato, my Cato, from the beginning I truly fell in love with this perfect specimen of a man, a protector. His love for Eira surfaced so quickly it was swoon worthy. It is impossible to not be smitten by his humour, his charm, his love for Eira is unmatched. Once you pick up Following The Snow you will be hooked. There are moments of laughter, suspense, love, shock, oh yes E.A. can put some zingers in there you won’t see coming. Many of us were in a group chat screaming at some of the antics happening on the page. Your emotions will run very deep! I wish I knew a way I could get everyone to read The Obligates of Aerta Series. It deserves all the awards!
I was hooked on this series from the very beginning! The world building was amazing, and this book took me on a full emotional ride. Just like the previous installments of this series, it had perfectly blended all the light and dark moments with a heartfelt plot and even had some genuinely funny scenes. The ending had me in tears, then it also gave me all the warm and fuzzy feelings. I loved every second of reading this. I can't wait to see what E.A. Fortneaux has planned to write next and I will be gladly reading It too.
A Shield of Snow was a delightful, stressful, hilarious, and sexy end to this Obligates of Aerta series! I found myself laughing, crying, and enjoying the final chapter of Eira’s journey. I’ve always enjoyed the world building and details of this series, and this fourth book didn’t disappoint. I’ve also enjoyed the multiple points of view, because it’s given me so many insights into Cato and Ambrose! And finally, there are so many words of wisdom throughout this series, and my favorite passage from this story was: "How had it taken me nearly thirty years to understand that the light and the shadows had always shared the same sky? That cruelty did not erase happiness, only made it rarer and more precious when found."
