Kaitlin Reynolds is used to fearlessly flying off mountains. But nearly two years after a devastating injury has ended her ski jumping career, Kaitlin is still struggling to put one foot in front of the other and find her new life. A chance meeting with a handsome stranger begins to put life into perspective. Dashing figure skater, Declan McLoughlin has just returned from the Olympics amid a swirl of publicity and fan fare. Just as Kaitlin begins to have hope again, her charming savior turns out to represent everything she has lost. If Kaitlin can just let go of the past and take a leap of faith, will she find herself soaring into Declan's arms?
Kathryn R. Biel writes low-to-no spice contemporary romance, rom-com, sports romance, and women’s fiction full of humor, heart, and happily-ever-afters. Her books balance the drama and challenges of real life with witty banter, strong heroines, and swoony cinnamon-roll heroes. Whether she’s writing laugh-out-loud romantic comedies, emotional women’s fiction, or heartfelt sports romances, Kathryn delivers stories where resilience, love, and laughter take center stage.
Kathryn is the author of more than 20 books, including the award-winning Live for This, Made for Me, and The UnBRCAble Women Series (Ready for Whatever, Seize the Day, and Underneath It All).
Kaitlin is a sad, angry, and depressed ex-athlete. I was not sure where this book would go, but had a good idea once Delcan came into her life. Declan is exactly what Kaitlin needs. He lets her wallow in her grief of losing her chance to compete at the ultimate level, but does not let her get to deep in her wallows. He makes her smile, gives her a shoulder to cry on, and understands her grief. He also makes her feel in ways she hasn’t felt in a long time and wasn’t sure she would be able to feel again.
While Kaitlin struggles with her loss, Declan is also struggling. He is dealing with his career ending, his partner pressuring him to keep skating, and what he is going to do with his life now that he is not skating. While Kaitlin tries to step up and support him, somehow every time she does it gets turned around and is about her. I felt like Kaitlin was very selfish, it was all about her own feelings not about what Declan is going through.
Kathryn Biel wrote a book that brings attention to a new sport to the Olympics. She also shows just how intense the training and lifestyle of those athletes can be and how losing that focus can throw a life out of control. I enjoyed the story and am proud of how Kaitlin finally turns her life around and becomes the positive person who can enjoy life again.
There are few books that I personally find to be five star quality, and this is one of them. For five stars, I have to believe that the plotline, the characters, and the supporting cast, are going to stand the test of time - people will feel something so deeply that they will pick this book up again, or that twenty years plus, the book has relevance.
Jump, Jive, and Wail has all these qualities.
Kaitlin Reynolds is not easy to love, but that's okay by her, because she doesn't want to be loved. Just when all the threads of her life were about to be woven into a beautiful tapestry, everything comes undone, and with it, her dreams dissipate and leave her... with less than nothing.
Declan McLoughlin runs into Kaitlin (a snort out loud scene), and what follows is utterly charming, endearing, painful, believable and poignant.
Ms. Biel does a remarkable job at conveying the complex emotions Kaitlin and Declan feel as they sort out their individual lives. When she takes us into the moments and hours that Kaitlin and Declan share, it is gripping.
Really, really, well crafted. When you get to the end of the book, you will appreciate the beauty of the book cover even more! Happy reading.
I loved this romantic tale of two professional athletes that accidentally run into each other (quite literally) and slowly fall in love. They work their way through multiple misunderstandings and miscommunications. I loved learning more about the world of professional ski jumping and figure skating.
Kaitlyn has a chip on her shoulder from the past few years of struggles including a career ending injury that led to a disability. She's angry at the world and living in depression. She meets Declan, a professional figure skater at the top of his career, including a half naked spread in People Magazine. He sees something in her, the life, the energy that he is lacking in his busy life. He teaches her that she can start over fresh and finally decide to be happy. Though Kaitlyn seems to face obstacle after obstacle including *SPOILER* hooking up with Declan's brother by mistake, she manages to overcome her past and allow herself to fall in love with Declan.
They have a sweet romance and while most of the between-the-sheets action takes place beyond the pages, their love story is a slow burn that bursts into a fire.

After reading Kathryn Biel’s third novel, “I'm Still Here”, I knew I had that one book I measure every ChickLit book against (and this isn’t even my genre!). I was curious how her fourth novel, Jump, Jive, and Wail, stacks up against a personal favorite.
The story is told in two points of view (that of Kaitlin and Declan) and they go back and forth. Initially, I didn’t see the point of having the same event told twice with only subtle differences in the account of events. But the more I read, the more I realize how clever it was because the reader becomes privy to what each character feels. It creates anticipation on how things will finally come together.
It’s easy to like Kaitlin because she’s just a terrific character – feisty yet vulnerable. Her sense of humor shines through, which makes even the sad moments, bearable.
For some odd reason, I half-expected it to be a “The Cutting Edge” kind of story. I couldn’t be more wrong. It doesn’t have the thrill and excitement of competition, but it does have a victory far more profound than winning medals in the Olympics.
I know I probably say this every time I read one of Kathryn Biel's books, but she's done it again! Another fantastic read! This telling was a little different than her past books because the story flips back and forth between the two main characters, Kaitlin and Declan. I really loved hearing the story from both sides.
As always the characters were real and well-defined, flawed but endearing. There are times when your heart will break for Kaitlin and Declan, but also times when your heart will soar. Ms. Biel knows how to write a story that is both compelling and also not predictable (which is quite the feat given the genre).
Well done! Can't wait to read more from this author.
Another great story from this author! This book had me hooked from the beginning and rooting for Kaitlin and Declan. I loved how the author moved seamlessly between telling the story from both the male and the female perspective. Like her other books this one will not disappoint and should be on everyone's summer reading list. I can't wait to see what Ms. Biel comes out with next!
A sweet slow-burn romance between an Olympic skater and an athlete whose Olympic dreams were dashed by a devastating injury.
As is the case with many books I've chosen lately, the book begins with our heroine in a pretty bad place both physically and emotionally. But rather than being sad and/or grim, she's angry, and somehow that's considerably easier to take. A large part of the beginning of the book takes place at the airport (Detroit Metro!) where the MCs are stranded during a winter storm. They are drawn together, but once they leave the airport, they deal with all sorts of circumstances that keep them apart.
I thought the end was a little rushed and not quite as satisfactory as it should've been, but otherwise enjoyed the story. It's written in a dual POV, and although I generally like seeing how both MCs react to certain situations, there was way too much redundancy. Also, I listened to the audiobook (not listed here on GR) and there was only one narrator. She read both POVs, which just sounded odd. There definitely should've been a male narrator for Declan's part.
The repetition of scenes from two viewpoints was annoying. I don't mind some, but rehashing entire chapters and dialogue sequences was too much. The connection between the main characters was flimsy and breaking their communication for months didn't help. OW/OM drama. Way too angsty for my taste.
Jump, Jive, and Wail is an emotional contemporary love story between Kaitlin Reynolds, a ski jumper that is retired due to an injury and Declan McLoughlin, figure skater that has just returned from the Olympics after winning a bronze medal.
A chance meeting, an over nigh stay together when stranded due to weather at the airport and a giant misunderstanding based on assumptions and only sharing a bit of the problems in their lives. Declan has a partner on the ice that is a walking and talking pain. Kaitlin has a cheating husband, hates her life, hates her job and hates her body.
They encourage each other, meet again in a funny situation and begin to communicate until they find a way through getting rid of the cheating husband, deciding what comes after figure skating and what they both really want from life. Taking one day at a time, looking for positives in life makes the emotional growth the main part of a nice love story.
I really liked the story line. Not everyone can finish there dream but remembering you can’t go back and that you have to move forward. I really enjoyed the book
People told Kaitlin Reynolds she has an anger problem. Everything changed and nothing was the same as before when she was at the top of her sport. Then one day she had an accident on the ski jump and she was suddenly a different person. The after Kaitlin was nothing like the before. Her physical therapist suggested she take a job in medical sales. Kaitlin told everyone she sucked at her job. Why? Kaitlin wanted the thrill of the jump back, not a job selling medical TENS units. She wore a brace on one leg to support her foot. It embarrassed her so she hid it in boot. Her husband was cheating on her and she blamed it on the accident. She provided his support while she was on top in her sport, but now that the endorsements and money had stopped coming in, he no longer needed her. Kaitlin’s life was in the pits. Declan McLoughlin was about as handsome as they come. What girl wouldn’t chase after him! He was tall, kind, famous, and the type who would go after something, or someone, if he wanted her. Declan was a figure skater and he and his partner had decided they would soon retire. After all, they had bronze medals from the Olympics. Declan wanted Kaitlin but did Kaitlin want Declan? The story of the developing romance between these two characters that started when they bumped into each other at the airport, will keep you turning the pages as you follow the progression of their relationship, both its ups and its downs. Will they ever settle their misunderstandings and their personal problems and decide whether they want a relationship? I loved the characters. Kaitlyn was enjoying her own pity party, which put a strain on her relationships. What was it that Declan saw in her that kept him coming back when others would have left? There was a lot of pain for these two, both physical pain, and emotional pain. Can they get beyond the emotional pain and have a serious relationship? Will Kaitlin’s anger push Declan away? Are Declan’s ties to his skating partner Natalya too strong for him to walk away from? The author researched Kaitlin’s medical problem very thoroughly and wrote a believable account of her accident and the disability she must live with. The description of the athletes’ sports and their lives as athletes were equally realistic. JUMP, JIVE, AND WAIL is an excellent story. I definitely would recommend this book to all readers of romance books. I was given a copy a JUMP, JIVE, AND WAIL by the author in exchange for an honest review.
Jump, Jive, and Wail By Kathryn R. Biel Review by Heidi Lynn
Thank you to Kathryn Biel for providing me with this book so I may write this review.
Kathryn tugged on my heart strings reading how genuinely appreciative she was for the assistance received writing Jump, Jive, and Wail. Many eBooks I have read I have not come across an acknowledgement page.
I enjoyed learning that she was inspired to write this book while watching the ski jumpers at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics. This was the first Olympics that woman were allowed to compete in. This book is a tribute to those brave women who fought for the right to represent.
There were two main characters in this book Kaitlin and Declan. Both are strangers, on the same flight, and both stranded together at the airport due to a weather delay. Over the course of the story both of them learn how each other’s commonalities intertwine into their lives. As a reader it was fascinating to see It unfold.
Right off the bat I felt a connection with Kaitlin. She and I both suffer from a dropped foot. She also sells medical devices, electrical stimulation units (called TENS unit). We both have used them to assist our walking.
There were many passages in the book that I liked and could relate to. This is just one of many. “Last I checked Mother Nature doesn't take personal requests.” He chided me jokingly. “Plus, you live in Detroit. How can you not like winter? Isn't it automatically in Michiganders DNA?” I myself live in Buffalo, NY so this gave me a chuckle.
I really enjoyed reading Jump, Jive, and Wail by Kathryn R. Biel. I rate this eBooks a 4.5 out of 5 kisses. I would definitely read more of her eBooks.
Every time I read women's fiction, I wonder why I don't read it more often. Including this time. I thoroughly enjoyed this read, largely for two reasons: the hero and the heroine. The interactions between them were funny, sweet, adorable, romantic... you name it.
Declan was that one of a kind hero who isn't a bad boy, isn't an alpha, has a wicked sense of humor, is confident (he has to be, to be a figure skater who happens to not be gay), caring, sweet, and frankly, exactly the kind of guy I want my daughter to marry someday.
Kaitlyn is the broken heroine. In the beginning of the book, she hates herself, hates life, hates everything. A chance encounter with Declan, a delayed flight due to weather, and over the course of 12 hours, Declan manages to convince her that she shouldn't be so down on herself, that it was time for her to pull her life together. Did I mention I adore Declan? Because trust me, Kaitlyn's issues were plenty big enough that she had every right to wallow in a little anger and frustration.
These two spark right away, but life and circumstances get in the way, causing them to develop first a friendship, before finally giving in to what the reader is going to root for from page one. Trust me, you will enjoy this read. It's worth adding to your TBR. Excellent job, Kathryn Biel!
Great, inspirational read. I wasn't expecting the story to go the way it did. I thought it'd be more of a light read, but I was wrong. It was a very soul searching and emotional story about a woman, Kaitlyn, who's life dreams are shattered when she suffers a career ending injury. Kaitlyn is a ski jumper, and now being disabled from her injury she is living a very bitter, angry and reclusive life. The story opens as we see her by chance meet Declan, a figure skater who is on the brink of retirement. The moments these two shared, and the undeniable attraction we witness between them has some cute and funny moments that I enjoyed very much. This was a very well written and researched book, and the plot line was well orchestrated. I felt that Ms. Biel did a fantastic job at capturing the frustration, anger, and bitterness that one experiences when living a life that has not panned out as expected. I've been living with struggles of my own and I could 100% relate to how Kaitlyn estranged herself from family and friends, and just became this angry, mean, and bitter woman. I felt like my current life was being described, and although I've already realized I need to make changes in my life and attitude, this story just solidified the need to do that. Thank you, Ms. Biel, for writing this. I look forward to reading more of your works.
Kaitlyn Reynolds is forced to retire from her sport at the top of her game because of a career-ending injury. She’s pissed at the world and giving up on herself when a chance encounter with an Olympic medalist during an airport layover forces her to reevaluate her life. In her fourth novel, author Kathryn Biel creates another resilient woman who finds strength within herself when she needs it the most. Biel has a talent for writing about real women with real problems who live in the real world. But most importantly, Biel creates characters the reader can relate to. There are two sides to every story and in Jump, Jive, and Wail, Biel presents both side by alternating between Kaitlyn’s and Declan’s perspective. She gives readers a chance to honestly get to know the characters through their words and actions. Biel’s fourth novel does not disappoint; it draws you in and holds your attention until the end.
Kaitlin Reynolds was a professional ski jumper with Olympic dreams before an injury ended her career; now she is bitter and angry at the world, not knowing who she is any more. Declan McLoughlin, a bronze medal Olympian in figure skating, literally runs into her at the airport. As they talk, Kaitlin begins to get a new perspective in life.
This was a cute story. The one part that bothered me was during the first day, you would read events/conversations from one person's point of view, and then you would read it again from the other person's part of view. Luckily, that stopped about 100 pages in.
I really enjoyed this romance about two athletes, one forced to give up her career and one nearing the end of his. I found the premise to be completely original as I've never read a book about Olympic competitors/hopefuls before. It was really interesting and clear that the author did her research. I enjoyed the two point of views and liked how the author showed each character's reactions to the same conversations - she managed to do so without being too repetitive which I imagine can be challenging. The characters were easy to root for even when they weren't always likable. And it was sexy without going over-the-top into raunchy. I will definitely be reading more from this author!
Is it too cliché to say SHE'S DONE IT AGAIN! If so, then oh well because Kathryn has most definitely written yet another phenomenal book. Just between us, this may be my favorite yet. her characters are deep, she entertwines real deep emotion with moments of belly laughing humor. I loved this book and I can guarantee I will read everything this author puts out. Time and time again she writes stories that pull at your heart strings. She writes some amazing female leads too, let me tell you, they hold their own. If you're looking for a book to love, this is it.
"Jump, Jive, and Wail," is an enjoyable and fun novel. It is lighthearted and funny, yet has its serious moments. The characters are wonderful and relatable; the storyline is realistic on many levels; and the novel is engaging.
The author is new to me, so I was unsure what to expect from this novel. I was pleasantest surprised to find that I read this novel straight through and found it to be an enjoyable and interesting read. I will definitely be reading other novels byt this author in the near future.
I was given an ARC in exchange for an honest review. First let me say I loved the first line. This was a great story. I found myself going through the journey Kaitlin was going through. I felt all her emotions and that made the character relatable for me. Looking forward to reading more by this author.
Kaitlin has a lot of growing to do and Declan is the man who wakes her up from her funk. Losing it all and having to start over is never fun but life doesn't stop. She has to make some tough choices to become the woman she is.
I found this story uplifting about a woman who overcomes the odds.
Wonderful! This book had me jumping and jiving and now I am wailing because it is over! Kaitlin and Declan are each interesting characters, but their chemistry together is out of this world - magical, delightful, and funny. I loved every page of this captivating story!
Kathryn's new book is her best book yet! Right from the first page she pulls you into Kaitlin and Declan's lives and you just can't wait to see what happens next! This is a great read and would recommend it to anyone looking for a feel good, keep you guessing book!
This was a good book with a story line that was different than most. Although a romance, it was clean, cute, quirky, sad and emotional. It was definitely one that I wanted to get to the end of just to see what would happen.
I couldn’t finish it. The chapter flipping between Kaitlin and Declan got on my nerves after a while and the 4 month black hole time gap just about half way through, finished me off. For Olympic standard sport competitors they just seemed immature
I’m not really sure how to rate this one. On one hand, it’s a great story of a former Olympic bound athlete whose dreams have been shattered, who is now hanging in limbo fighting depression and anger. On the other hand, the story felt like there were gaps and holes that weren’t filled in. You either have to struggle to figure out how the story jumped or you just let it be and move on to where the author jumped to.
Kaitlin has struggled with losing her dreams for two years. She’s bitter. She’s angry at the world. She’s floating through life alienating everyone who even tries to help her. She’s become an island as both a coping mechanism and because she really doesn’t know who to trust. Her life is in shambles, the people she should be able to count on are the ones she most definitely can’t rely on. She’ll never “fly” again, never experience that high and adrenaline rush, never realize competing in the Olympics that she fought so hard to get a to.
Declan has just won the Bronze at the 2014 Sochi Olympics in figure skating. He’s at a crossroads in his life. Does he retire while he’s on top or go into another aspect of figure skating? Can his body even handle staying on the ice and performing? He’s ready to quit. He’s ready for his Plan B. The problem? His partner isn’t ready. He hates her, but he still cares for her deeply. She can’t continue without him. She manipulates him and he hates it but can’t seem to stop it, either. He’s home now and is about to embark on his farewell tour. Forty-five more days and he’s free.
Declan literally runs into Kaitlin at Detroit airport and that’s when all the plans, or lack of plans, that each of them have begin to fall apart. It’s sort of a love/hate relationship. They’re good for one another. Well, Declan is good for Kaitlin. Declan’s already got it pretty much all together, calls Kaitlin on her pity parties and won’t let her wallow for too long. But could there be more? There’s always Natalya getting in the way, manipulating Declan, and twisting him up, around, and inside out. There are other things keeping Declan and Kaitlin apart, too.
This one is typical chick lit. It’s angsty, funny, many-layered, and “aww” inducing. The writing sometimes jumps from one place to another with no transition. It’s not particularly difficult to go with it, but it can be annoying. The ending was too abrupt for me. There didn’t seem to be a resolution in proportion to all the drama that preceded it. It’s entertaining and holds your interest, though!
