Of the romance books published by Wattpad I've read, this one is probably on the upper end. The characters were actually distinct, and I appreciated them even if I didn't love them. I also appreciated the bond they formed by both going through a horrible thing at the same time, while also figuring out more about themselves and setting up for a path of growth. Also, I appreciated the rep shown in this book.
I probably could have finished this and given it a solid 3 stars if not for the factor that finally made me decide I don't want to continue: the writing. It wasn't atrocious, but it was bland. I could appreciate all these things that were put into the book, but I never strongly enjoyed or liked any of it. This is likely because it all felt pretty surface level. It was an instance of being told a story rather than experiencing it. And that's not the worst crime a book can commit, but it does make it so that I lose interest extremely quickly. I probably had a sense I didn't want to continue on about 15% in, but I kept trying. Unfortunately, no positive change

4.5 stars ⭐️ I really enjoyed Liem and Bri’s love story and their individual growth. There were quite a few shocking moments, especially at the end, that I did not see coming! Liem is from Seattle and Bri is from LA. They meet after they both get broken up with at a restaurant in NYC. They end up temporarily living together in Brooklyn and the build up was so good. They didn’t have sex right away and I felt like the balance between steamy and sweet was perfect. I loved this book and will definitely be picking up a signed trophy copy on her book tour!

I really thought the premise of this book was interesting. Having two people get dumped at the same restaurant and then becoming friends, was a fun mix. I thought the characters were diverse and it had distinct personalities that were a good mix.
I was confused on the timeline because it seemed like a lot of time had passed but then a comment would be made and it wasn’t that long. I could have used more descriptions because it was hard to visualize what was happening or what someone looked like. And personally I didn’t care for the ending. It felt a bit odd for me.
But it is a fun and quick read with good characters and a different storyline that I have seen.

Two different couples find themselves at a break up at the same place and at the same time. Bri is approaching her 30th birthday and the last thing she expected from her boyfriend was for him to dump her at a fancy restaurant. Liem uprooted his entire life to propose to his girlfriend, but little did he know that he was missing the hints of both of them breaking apart until she has to publicly spell it out to him. But these two break ups are only the beginning of Bri and Liem’s relationship with each other.
This is a quick-paced, hilarious romance featuring two loveable main characters as they learn what it means to build healthy relationships—not just with each other, but within themselves as well. I truly enjoyed the first half of this novel and the easy way that Bri and Liem had chemistry with each other, and as the novel lulled in the middle and then picked up at breakneck speeds towards the end, it was the characters that continued to keep me hooked because I had to know just how these two finally got together. Breakup for Two by E.M. Wilson is the second book that I have read by this author. The first story was The Situationship. Both books are enjoyable while having different vibes and emotional tones. In addition, I see growth in this author’s writing style and story construction.
In Breakup for Two our main characters meet when they are not both dumped publicly by their significant others. Bri and her boyfriend David have been in a long-term relationship for some time. So, when David says he wants to fly Bri out to NY (one-way ticket), she is sure that he is ready to propose. Instead, he uses a public setting to tell her that he wants to end their relationship AND that he is cheating on her. On the other hand, Liem quit his job and gave up his apartment to follow his girlfriend to NY without FIRST checking in with her beforehand. Liem and Bri find themselves in the same situation; however, their responses are radically different. Liem is quietly heartbroken while Bri gives David a piece of her mind in scathingly amusing details.
The universe has put them on the same trajectory and after spending the evening in drunken commiseration, they seem to be unable to part. I loved the way their friendship blossomed as they each supplied a component the other desperately needed. Sunny and outgoing, Bri bolstered Liem’s courage and self-image while Liem provided stability and unconditional love.
Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end! Liem’s job needs him back in Seattle and Bri needs to return to Los Angeles and pick the fragments of her life. Will these sweet friends and maybe lovers be able to stay in contact even with the distance between them or will this promising connection just prove to be another missed opportunity for both of them?
Conclusion:
I really loved everything about this book. Liem is one of my favorite male characters with such an innocent sweetness; while Bri has endured loss and even physical pain but continues to be a source of sunshiny support and validation for the people she loves (well, even strangers). They are just two genuinely nice people with slightly broken edges. As the story progressed and they were separated by circumstances it was lovely to see how they continued to show up for each other. Final words, the story entertains with some unexpected twists as well as some satisfying closures and changes in dynamics for past relationships. Ms. Wilson expertly blends the fun elements of a rom-com with the uncertainty and angst that comes with loss but tempered by emotional progress. Bri and Liem had such good chemistry, and we get to see them grow and find their own paths….thankfully together!
Favorite Lines:
No, please. Tell me why I’m the one who should be embarrassed when you’re the one who stepped out. Short-dicked, lowlife, cheating-ass bitch.”
I’m not hungry, not wearing a stitch of makeup, and my hair is thrown into a bun with zero attention paid to my edges, but still, the thought of leaving him alone saddens me.
Let me go and do a good deed before I catch a case. “I would,” I say. “Let’s go.”
“I’m happy you’re back.” She loops her arm through mine and leans her head onto my shoulder. “I missed my breakup buddy.”
It’s the kind people. Those who give out light whenever darkness is around, not because it feels good to them or because it’s the social expectation.
School was a distraction from the life I didn’t have.
Living with Bri is awesome. Easy. She’s like a cat, waking up earlier than me, entertaining herself most of the day, occasionally napping on the couch in the sunlight between her busiest times, and only interrupting me when food is needed.
The only unconditional love that should exist is the love a parent has for a child, she told her. Unconditional means unconditional

This is a fast-paced story of two roommates who develop feelings for each other and have to determine whether to stay friends or take a chance on real love. What Worked for Me
The relatability is nervewrecking! The author does such a wonderful job communicating the characters’ emotions. I felt so moved when reading the passage where Bri is reflecting on her relationship with her ex. This scene felt so raw, I truly felt for Bri, and became even more invested in her journey of self-discovery.
Excellent character development! The character growth is definitely a highlight. We see Liem learn and practice setting boundaries. We see Bri put herself and her goals first, instead of prioritizing relationships. I found some of their antics to give codependent vibes, but not every relationship is perfect.
Bri’s relationship with her friend group was definitely giving the vibes of the core girl group in Harlem, which I loved!
What DIdn’t Work For me
I enjoyed the storyline, but a few elements of the writing didn’t work for me and left me feeling out of the story and not in it. First, the pace of the story is quite quick, and some details that help the reader follow along are missing. There were times where I would wonder what a character looked like, what a character was wearing, what a setting looked like, how much time had passed between scenes, or felt confusion due to missing transitions from different scenes or locations.
The settings often fell flat for me, when I was reading I often imagined the characters interacting in vague or white spaces. Settings changed often, and I could have benefited from more details throughout to refresh my memory of what recurring settings looked like. I would have liked to have more sensory details throughout the novel that painted clear pictures of each scene. Moreover, I want to be shown what’s happening instead of relying on the author to tell me. Instead of saying Bri is exhausted after exercising, communicating that exhaustion by describing what’s going on with her physically would have felt more impactful.
Overall, I feel like the approach was to include content the author thought the reader would want to know, but I fear she excluded small but mighty details that would have made for a more robust reading experience.

In My Own Words: From trash to treasure - two unsuspecting people learn the real cost of love and the real value of commitment.
About the Characters: Bri and Liem took to each other well. I liked the care-taking aspect to their relationship. They seemed to almost balance each other out when it came to the exes. The I got you mode they engaged in was needed. When big feelings come post big betrayal, an outside anchor can make all the difference. The close quarters ++ stuff that came to be made for a unique reading experience, to be sure.
My Final Say: I am gonna be honest with ya: I liked this book alright, even though I had expected to love it. It was hella-hilarious. It was witty. It was messy. It was unfortunate. It was somewhat predictable. It had its own kind of charm.
The lead characters, Bri and Liem, were interesting to watch. They were clearly who they were. With that said, at times, they came across as naive or perhaps a better word might be immature. She seemed to be made of sturdier stuff in comparison to him, if that makes sense. Still, they jived well together from jump. I suppose a shared experience like they faced can do that - bring connection about, I mean.
The unfolding and subsequent leaning into their special situationship worked out all the way around. What started ugly ended up beautiful for them. What was meant for their harm got dealt with magnificently. (Bye, boy! Tell Felicia bye, too!)
In the end, I will simply say, some aspects of this story full on worked and others...meh. In my opinion, I could not help but notice that there was a heavy focus on contemporary labels. It took me out of the story momentarily.
I think it's fair to say that Bri and Liem had to deal with grown up emotions, life changes, closure and openings, and how to turn toxic trash bombs into personal triumph treasure.
I think I could possibly click with this story more as an audiobook experience. I think it would be incredibly entertaining to hear the characters being brought to life. The wit alone would keep me cracking up.
This is my second time reading a novel from this author. I confess that this book had a very different tone than the other. It will be interesting watching what comes next from this writer.

Well…that proposal dinner went spectacularly wrong. For everyone involved.
E.M. Wilson’s Breakup for Two hooked me before the first chapter was over because I honestly couldn’t stop thinking, “What are the chances?” Frayed Pages x Wattpad Books, thank you so much for the gifted book.
Bri and Liem don’t meet because sparks instantly fly. They meet because both of them are sitting in the same restaurant while their relationships completely implode. It’s awkward. It’s painful. It’s also kind of funny once the shock wears off. Instead of going their separate ways, they end up helping each other survive what has to be one of the worst nights either of them has ever had.
I loved that this wasn’t a race to romance. They became friends first, and I believed every step that came after. They listened to each other. They challenged each other. They gave each other room to fall apart without trying to fix everything overnight. That made the relationship feel earned.
Bri was probably my favorite. She has a big personality, a quick mouth, and enough confidence to make people think she has everything figured out. She doesn’t. Liem is almost her opposite. He’s thoughtful, patient, and spent far too long putting someone else’s happiness ahead of his own. Watching both of them slowly figure out who they were outside of their failed relationships ended up meaning just as much to me as the romance.

I laughed when I read that because, somehow, it perfectly sums up this whole book.
There’s humor here, but there are also conversations about chronic illness, self-worth, mental health, family expectations, and learning that love isn’t supposed to cost you your identity. Those quieter moments ended up being the ones I remembered most.
There was one twist late in the story that caught me completely off guard. I’m still not sure I loved where it went, but it never made me stop rooting for Bri and Liem. By then I was too attached.
If your favorite romances are built on friendship, emotional growth, found family, forced proximity, and characters who slowly become each other’s safe place, I think you’ll have a good time with this one.

Now that I’ve finished Bri and Liem’s story – I can’t stop smiling at the beautiful journey they took me on. This story is special. Liem is a different kind of book boyfriend. He’s vulnerable, honest, truly introverted, and loves intensely. Bri is just as special. She’s kind, resilient, hilarious, and complex. She sees the beauty and meaning in everyday moments and celebrates it. It’s rare that an author provides two, fully realized main characters but Wilson has. The MCs and their friends and family are diverse without the characters feeling like the author was just checking “multicultural” or “queer” boxes. The banter, emotion, and love between them always felt authentic. The spice never felt exaggerated or forced. I especially enjoyed the modern approach to mental health, emotions, and chronic illness – as common topics for discussion without drama or shame. These characters display exceptional emotional intelligence. Bri and Liem undergo a great deal of self-reflection and growth – but never stop having fun together, eating delicious meals, and sharing their passion for each other. Despite the complexity of their circumstances – they never stop finding their way back to each other. This couple has found a special place in this romance reader’s heart. From there, Bri and Liem strike up a connection that starts in chaos but settles into something really sweet. The synopsis mentions Insecure and I absolutely see it. They’re both a little awkward, a little unsure, but in a way that feels real and endearing.
What I appreciated most is that while this starts off feeling like a rebound situation, it doesn’t stay surface-level. They become a support system for each other while navigating heartbreak, identity, and figuring out what they actually want for themselves. That emotional foundation makes the shift into romance feel natural, not rushed.
And yes, it delivers on the yearning. The slow build, the tension, the “are we doing this or not” energy… all of it lands.

This book throws Bri and Liem into the deep end immediately. Public breakups, emotional fallout, life upheaval… there is a lot happening here. And somehow, instead of all that mess overshadowing the romance, it actually makes their connection feel more real. These are two people going through it, and watching them find something genuine in the middle of the chaos really works.
The banter is fun, the setup is delightfully awkward, and the emotional beats mostly hit. This is definitely a slow burn, but once the romance starts romancing? The payoff is worth it. The love scenes are well executed—spicy without feeling forced or cringey, which is always appreciated.
I also loved the supporting cast. Friends and family add depth, humor, and texture without ever pulling focus from Bri and Liem’s story. Everyone feels intentional, which keeps the world feeling full but never overwhelming.
My only real complaint is the ending—it felt a bit rushed compared to the rest of the book. After such a thoughtful buildup, I wanted just a little more time to sit in the resolution.
That said, this was a very enjoyable read overall. Messy characters, genuine chemistry, solid spice, and a romance that grows out of absolute disaster? Sign me up.

One of the things I loved most about this story is that finding your person doesn't always have to mean finding a romantic or sexual partner (the bonus of that is always welcomed). Sometimes it's about finding your twin flame; someone who understands you, supports you, and helps you become the person you're meant to be.
Bri was exactly what Liem needed to discover who he truly was, while Liem became the person Bri needed in her corner; her biggest supporter, constantly reminding her to keep her head up and wear her crown proudly. Their connection felt genuine, heartfelt, and inspiring.
We often picture our lives going a certain way, but this story reminds us that sometimes we're exactly where we need to be, when we need to be there. Their journey took us from Brooklyn to Seattle, Los Angeles, and even Vietnam, making the story feel rich, expansive, and full of life.

This was a solid 4/4.5 star read for me! This book was a chaotic meet cute between our main characters Liem and Bri, who both experience public breakups in the same restaurant on the same night. This terrible night trauma bonds the two of them together and they form a fast friendship and even become roommates as they try to navigate life post break up.
What I enjoyed most is that they didn't use their respective breakups as a catalyst to just jump into the bed and move on too fast, they used their breakups to ACTUALLY bond and become friends and a support system for one another. The book has a HUGE emotional payoff to me because they communicated so well and you could actually feel the depths of their emotions as they strengthened their friendship and eventually became more. I also enjoyed that although their romance was a slow burn, the spicy scenes seemed to flow naturally and did not feel forced once they decided to cross that line.
Lastly, this is a fast paced read that gives us hurting, healing, and everything in between. The banter is witty, the conversations are relatable, and you find yourself actively rooting for our main characters and their opportunities to experience a second chance at love.
I would absolutely recommend this book to others and I hope you pick this one up to read and experience for yourself!

Based on the premise I expected a light hearted, palate cleansing, romcom, and while there was some of that, this book shined in its moments of embracing found family, exploring sexual orientations outside of what’s considered the ‘norm’, and executing the difficult task that is trying to establish oneself while being part of a pairing. Characters have to ask, “Am I making the choices I’m making because they’re what’s best for me, or is it because those decisions are best for my relationship with my partner?”
The way things develop between our FMC Bri and our MMC Liam, was so beautifully written. There’s this narrative push and pull between the two that makes their inevitable romantic relationship so rewarding once it finally happens. If you’ve been looking for yearning in your romance novels, you’ll find it in Breakup for Two.
The only reason I didn’t give this five stars is because there’s something that happens near the end of the book that I found to be completely unnecessary for the plot.

A MMC who’s the inexperienced one in the relationship (rather than the FMC) was such a refreshing flip. Bri is easy to root for from page one, and her friend group deserves a shoutout too because they hold her down without ever making her feel small about where she is in her life. They want her to win. They want her happy.
Watching these two grow individually and together, and land on a happily ever after that doesn’t look like what either of them originally planned, is exactly the kind of payoff I read romance for. It was well-paced, never dragged, and the spice was there when it needed to be and never gratuitous.

The book started out kind of corny, like the plot of a really cheesy rom com movie, but then it got progressively better. So much so that I found myself loving it! I was captivated by Liem and Bri’s individual character growth, as well as their growth within their friendship (and budding relationship!). I love seeing Liem grow into the man he always wanted to be, and to watch Bri give herself grace and choose her happiness. Their journey to recognizing that sometimes you can’t always wait for life to be perfect before you take a chance was refreshing and wonderful to read!
I will say that I was not happy or moved by the plot twist of Natalie and Liem having a baby. I personally think the story could have went just fine without another surprise baby (David’s was more than enough, Liem also having a baby was overkill). That storyline alone dropped this book’s rating for me down from 4 stars to 3.5.
All in all, it was such a cute read and I thoroughly enjoyed it!!!
The book started out kind of corny, like the plot of a really cheesy rom com movie, but then it got progressively better. So much so that I found myself loving it! I was captivated by Liem and Bri’s individual character growth, as well as their growth within their friendship (and budding relationship!). I love seeing Liem grow into the man he always wanted to be, and to watch Bri give herself grace and choose her happiness. Their journey to recognizing that sometimes you can’t always wait for life to be perfect before you take a chance was refreshing and wonderful to read!
I will say that I was not happy or moved by the plot twist of Natalie and Liem having a baby. This book is such a delight — I loved it from the very beginning. The story follows two strangers, Liem and Bri, who both get dumped in the same restaurant on the same night. They’re heartbroken, embarrassed, and spiraling… until they realize they’re sitting right next to each other. That moment sparks the most unexpected connection.

I feel like the book showed the life choices that everyone has to go through and how outside factors can affect a decision, especially in a relationship. The relationship between Bri and Liem also felt natural and not forced, even if it was an unorthodox meeting, it still worked out for them.

The first half of this book was definitely 4 stars. But the second half was more like 2.5. The plot lost some momentum when they went back to their original jobs and lives, and it became really hard to root for Liem and Bri to be together. By the end, I felt like they shouldn’t be.
Liem learned to stand up for himself (yay) but Bri was a little frustrating. Her best friend ends up having to have an emergency C-section on Bris birthday, and then Bri has a little pity party for herself? Like girl, your friend could have died…. you can have cake tomorrow?! She kept pushing Liem away and then was upset when she felt like he wasn’t there for her.
Then Liem ends up having a baby with his ex? I don’t know, I think with how fast they became obsessed with each other, especially how Liem became about being with Bri (even when she was telling him not to be), was also kinda a red flag.

Breakup for Two by E.M. Wilson is one of those romances that sneaks up on you which i love. It starts with tension, miscommunication, and two people who are clearly trying to protect their hearts but the way their connection grows feels so natural and intimate. The chemistry is soft but steady, and the emotional payoff hits exactly where it should.What I loved most is how the book balances vulnerability with humor. The characters feel real, flawed, and easy to root for. This book is the definition of a rom-com! I literally laughed out loud multiple times and also found myself rooting for their unique love story.
Breakup for Two had several tropes that I enjoy; forced proximity, sunshine vs. grumpy, friends to lovers etc. The two main characters, Bri and Liem, were written so intentionally that they felt real. They shared a similar trauma that immediately bonded them and from there, faced every obstacle together.
What made me enjoy this book the most was how their relationship progressed, in some romances the love is instantaneous and lacks any substance - which often leaves me thinking “But why do you love him/her?” Not in this story, their connection grows from transparent and sometimes painful truths about things in their lives they’ve been afraid to face until now. They truly see each other and make the conscious choice to accept who they are at that moment, unlike falling for potential in previous partners.
Although I didn’t care for the final twist at the end and friends of the MCs often feel surface level and completely unnecessary, I would highly recommend this book. Loved it!

Breakup for Two is the second book I’ve read by E.M. Wilson. I enjoy this author's writing style. Such relatable characters and themes that most readers can resonate with. Bri and Liem go through a public breakup—not with each other, but with other people. It just happens to be at the same time. They both find friendship and help each other. They look out for each other. And they develop feelings for each other. I like how Liem learns a lot about himself, and Bri helps him with that in a healthy way. I really liked how the author handled Bri's endometriosis. There were a few emotional surprises in this that I did not anticipate, but things wrapped up nicely at the end. The spice was really good too in this, so don’t be fooled by the cute illustrated cover or Liem being a “nice guy”.

4 stars. Breakup for Two is exactly the kind of messy, minding-other-people’s-business-to-avoid-my-own chaos I needed in my life right now. There’s everything to love here: not one but two public breakups (pass me the popcorn) and at the center of it, two people — Bri and Liem — trying to figure out who they are without their trash exes and who they can be together. Also, the spice is spicing ❤️
Listen, I have to be honest here: the plot twist happens to involve a trope I don’t personally love (and I know that’s a me problem), so I did deduct a star for it because I don’t love getting blindsided by that one… even though it’s absolutely a real thing.
