Harry Potter but make it a school for dragon shifters. The Flames of Darkness follows a sixteen-year-old girl, Everin, who one day discovers that she’s a dragon. After being called upon to join the Drakon Academy, she and the other late bloomers (people who shifted later than others) try to find where they belong in a school that ridicules them for being different.

I saw the potential, I really did, but this book just…didn’t quite meet it. For starters, the prologue and first chapter were already confusing and odd, and I couldn’t tell whether or not it’d be an enjoyable read. It was, for the most part. The vibes were seriously vibing, with bird-like dragons that carry your luggage and fold your clothes away (gimme gimme), hidden dangerous magic, a quest a group of teens go on, and an astounding ending that will most definitely have your jaw on the floor. I know mine sure was. I also appreciated how quick and fast paced this felt; I ate it up within 24hours and have no regrets. But despite the list of good stated above, there were also some disappointing things that are the reason as to why my rating is what it is. Yes, the book was fast, but it was also rushed–something that caused me to feel disconnected and, frankly, very confused at times. Some scenes felt too quick to pass, and I couldn’t quite enjoy what was happening because they were already moving on to something different. Following up with that, the romance was also too rushed for my liking, with the moment every reader dreads: when one of the characters realises they love the other after only a small amount of time together. Please, no. You’re not in love with her, babes–not after two weeks of getting to know her. Barely.

The whole book was interesting, unique, and very entertaining. But it only just started to hook me in around maybe seventy percent. Even then, the pacing was just too rushed. Something I’ve found in so many of my recent reads is how unusual and unrealistic some of the characters talk. They sounded almost robotic. Just a contraction here and there would suffice to make the dialogue flow better in my opinion. I also wasn’t the biggest fan of the fact that phones, social media, makeup, and other real life products/items were mentioned. I despise when my fantasy books have that; I want to escape from reality not read about it. It was cool that The Flames of Darkness had a mix of both fictional and real world themes, but I don’t want people filming dragons and others talking about AI generation. A big no-no for me, thanks.

Overall, I had a really fun time, with each page entertaining enough to keep my attention despite some of the negatives I had about this book. I’d highly recommend to anyone out there who wants similar vibes to Harry Potter, wants a unique fantasy with dragon shifters and an academic setting, or even a quick read you can devour within a day. Although my rating is low, it was still a pleasant enough read. Not quite a waste of time.

Actually really enjoyed this.

The Flames of Darkness is a dark fantasy romance with a compelling premise, rich lore, and an academy setting that immediately caught my attention. had a lot of promise with its fantasy romance, dragon shifters, and high-stakes plot. While I did enjoy reading this, some aspects didn't work for me...

This gave me Zodiac Academy and Harry Potter vibes, but without the smut since it's YA—the magical school setting, 'you’re a dragon' reveal, being shipped off to the academy, secret library sections, magical competitions, and a prophecy.

The story follows Everin, a late-blooming dragon shifter, who is sent to the academy to control her powers. I did struggle with the beginning, as some of the dialogue felt cringey and pulled me out of the story, but I quickly became invested! I enjoyed the high-stakes battles, the twist, and the action throughout, which kept me invested once the story fully picked up. The world-building and magic system were solid, and I just love the academy vibes!!

The world-building was one of the book's strengths, and I liked the way dragon lore, magic, and prophecy blended together. The last quarter of the book, especially the twist, was one of the strongest parts; the action picked up, the stakes sharpened, and the atmosphere grew more intense. It reminded me why I love fantasy involving prophecies and dangerous hidden powers.

I also loved the themes: finding identity, navigating power you don’t fully understand, uncovering truths adults have hidden, and the idea that sometimes you can be both the hero and the danger. Those elements were layered nicely and gave the story more emotional weight.

I liked all the characters, though I wish some of them had a little more depth. I loved getting to know more about Everina and her dragon shifter journey! I will say, though was not a fan of Phoenix, the resident “rich” girl; she was constantly on her phone and obsessed with social media, and felt out of place in a fantasy setting.

Now, let's talk about the romance. Everin and Tariel romance was sweet, but it felt rushed. I liked that they were already familiar with each other before the events of the book, but they got together very quickly, and the buildup of their relationship was minimal. They went from semi-aware acquaintances to developing feelings very quickly, and personally, I thought it needed more tension, more internal conflict, and more slow-burning moments to really feel invested.  It wasn’t insta-love exactly, but it definitely felt underdeveloped

Overall, besides it's shortcomings, I'm totally invested!! This is an entertaining read if you enjoy magical school adventures, dragon shifters, and action-packed plots!

ARC reader: Definitely gives some Fourth Wing vibes. MFC, Everin Haydon, finds out she is a dragon shapeshifter but is a late bloomer. Along with,MMC, Tariel Fenwick, the headmaster’s son.
Story has great friendships and adventures as well as several twists! This is a no spicy book but very well written. Great read and I cannot wait for book two!

This was a short, fun book that is 100% for teenagers and it is super clean. So it is perfect for the school library. Only kissing.

If a student asks for The Fourth Wing, this is a good alternative. It has dragons, academia, adventure and first love romance. It would also suit Harry Potter lovers.

I liked how the usual 2D stereotypes weren’t relied upon. E.g. the rich, pretty student had a lot of empathy and was supportive (so far) so that was really refreshing. The world building was quite good. A little more on Beth would’ve been great as Everin’s home life is quite a complicated and emotional reality for some readers. I hope that is addressed more in book 2. More on the romance - there wasn’t enough tension for me and I’d like to see why they love each other so much as I felt that was skipped.

I am keen for Book 2 to see how it all goes. That ending! 😱

I received this book as an ARC and all opinions are my own.

⭐️ARC REVIEW⭐️

Will be Published October 18, 2025 📚

This YA fantasy features dragons, an academy, strong friendships, and a little romance. Even though this could be categorized as young adult, I thoroughly enjoyed the story and recommend this to all ages. The plot was well paced with enough details to really immerse you in the story. The characters were well written and likable, and I was rooting for them in their adventures throughout.

I look forward to reading more in the next book, especially after that last chapter 😲

I had the chance to read an ARC of this story, and I truly enjoyed it! The concept feels refreshing and original, mixing elements that I haven’t seen combined before. The writing is engaging and easy to follow, and I was completely hooked from start to finish.

The characters, especially the main trio, are really fun to read about, and their dynamic is one of my favorite parts. I only wish the story had been a bit longer so we could spend more time with them and see their world in greater depth.

Overall, it’s a captivating and creative read that shows a lot of heart and potential. I’m excited to see what the author writes next!

Just like the flames, I devoured this book. It follows Everin, who learns that she is a dragon and is shipped off to a school to help her harness the dragon and learn to shift. However, things are not as they seem when Everin realises there is a darkness within her and her friend/romantic partner, starts speaking in a language that no one has heard in millennia. I really enjoyed this story and I found myself needing to keep reading to see what happened next. It was well-written and I really loved the chemistry and friendships created. Plus dragons!

So excited for the next one to come out, I hope we don’t have to wait too long as was left on a cliffhanger!! Really enjoyed this one and excited to see where it goes next!

3.75 ⭐ rounded up

Thank you La Kayshal for a free eARC, here is my honest review.

A clean version of Fourth Wing with more Harry Potter vibes perfect for teenagers. Don't go into it as an Adult expecting the same type of world and writing as Fourth Wing. I honestly still enjoyed it, you just have to keep in mind that it's YA. It was easy to read and I liked the overall story, and of course an academy setting with dragons.

The only things I could say I would have liked more was to see a better transition between how we first see Phoenix, she isn't interested in classes, constantly glued to her phone, and then she is switched to being alert and eager for the one class to start. As the story went on we can see the more complex feelings behind her character, I just feel it should have been a smoother transition. I would have also liked to see more gradual bonding between the group of friends, it felt like they started off disinterested with one another and then all of a sudden they were inseparable and so close-knit. I would have liked a bit more depth with the relationship between Everin and her Dad, we didn't get much from his side.

Apart from that I really enjoyed the book, I felt it was an interesting take on the normal dragon academy setting and the way it ended set it up very nicely for book 2.

5 🌟 YA fantasy dragon shifter academy setting mix between Harry Potter and Forth Wing. Characters are 16 and 17 years old and so only kissing and age appropriate "spice." This book series would be great for those who want to read 4th wing but are too young for that level of spice.
I don't read YA often. This is an ARC read for me, and I can honestly say I'm excited to read book 2.
I like the twists and the different perspective on dragons in this one, I would want more world building if it were an adult romantasy but as a YA I think the writing is great for the age range of the targeted demographic.
Everin is a 16 year old "late blooming" dragon (most transform around age 12) she didn't even know dragons were real or that she was one, she learns she's a dragon and ends up at a dragon academy where she's grouped with 2 other late bloomers. The dragon council is watching them closely cause there's also a prophecy that a feared dragon breed is coming which will bring a general of Satan and world of chaos and destruction and there are 3 types of rare dragons that haven't been in the world in centuries. So tensions are high, and everyone is just hoping to transform into normal dragons.
The friend group had 5 total, 3 girls and 2 boys, 1 girl is kind of like the dragon Hermione, and 1 boy is a surprise dragon shifted without having dragon blood in his family tree, and then the 3 late bloomers. They all work together to try and help Everin and the other 2 be able to shift. It's a quick read and keeps you engaged and is full of action for a shorter read. It's about 300 pages. The MMC is the headmasters son, so he's known he's a dragon, but at 17 years old, he's very late in his transformation. He's too young for me to call him a book boyfriend, but he's someone you would be happy to see your own daughter with, lol 😆.

When I came across The Flames of Darkness, I was very interested to see how the author was going to tell her story. I had seen something saying it was like a mix of Harry Potter and Fourth Wing, both series which I have enjoyed, so I was excited. I like just about anything with dragons, but having a book where the characters turn INTO dragons versus just ride them was a unique way to incorporate them into the story that I enjoyed. It's similar to Harry Potter in a way because these kids discover they are dragons (whether it's expected, like with most of the characters, or hidden like Everin) and then they attend an academy which teaches them what they need to know to succeed. This also relates to Fourth Wing because it involves dragons and all the classes have to do on the history of dragons, combat training, and shifting. The story follows Everin, the FMC, who has no idea that dragons even exist. She is at home, which is not a healthy environment for her or her siblings, when she sees part of her face turn into a dragon in the mirror. This scares her of course, thinking something was horribly wrong with her. Her dad then arrives at home (he works away from home and is rarely there, making home life worse) and tells her nothing is wrong with her and explains that he himself is a dragon. She is taken to the academy the following day, having to leave her siblings behind with their unstable mother, but she learns all about her lineage that was kept a secret for so long. I enjoy that the group of friends is not what you'd expect, when Everin first arrives, she is unsure how her and her roommates will get along because they are all so different. They all become very close, along with a couple of boys in their rank as well, and go on adventures to try and find things to help her shift but also to keep her in control instead of her dragon. The book felt fast paced at times, and I wish the chapters were longer and had more information, which is why i'm rating it 4 stars. Overall though, it was a really good book and i'm very excited for the release of the new one next month!

I just finished The Flames of Darkness and it completely pulled me into its world. Everin Haydon is such a compelling character, especially as she struggles to understand her place at Drakon Academy without being able to shift like the others. That sense of not belonging made her journey feel very real and easy to connect with.
The dynamic between Everin and Tariel Fenwick was one of my favorite parts of the story. Their bond develops in a quiet, natural way, built on shared struggles and understanding rather than instant attraction. It added an emotional depth that balanced the darker, more dangerous elements of the plot.
The underlying prophecy about the Hell’s Fire Dragon creates a constant tension throughout the book. There is always this feeling that something bigger and more dangerous is coming, which kept me turning the pages. The mix of dragons, mystery, and self-discovery made this a very engaging read.
If you enjoy dragon academies, slow-burn connections, and stories about finding your identity in a world that already expects something from you, this is definitely worth picking up.

This was a really enjoyable fantasy read. I've picked up many a book set in a magical academy setting, and adding dragon shifters into the mix drew me straight into it! The story pulled me in quickly and I flew through it.

Everin was an interesting character who was easy to connect with early on, particularly because of the hardships she endured growing up. It was exciting to discover her connection to dragons and see her settle into the academy. I liked learning about the magic and dragon-shifting and seeing the characters develop friendships at the Academy. The hints that something mysterious and darker was brewing in the background also kept the story intriguing. The romance was sweet and fit the YA tone. Some parts of the story were a bit harder to follow but overall it was an entertaining and easy read.

Definitely a solid start to the series, and the ending left me curious to see what happens next.

Thank you to Netgalley and Victory Editing Netgalley Co-op for the opportunity to read this ARC.

The Flames of Darkness was an entertaining and quick YA fantasy that takes place at an academy for dragon-shifters. I thought this aspect was pretty intriguing and I was excited to see the students learn how to shift etc. Everin, the FMC, is a late-bloomer in regards to dragon shifting and she is thrust into a magical academy in a cohort with other late bloomers. It was refreshing that there was no animosity or competition in their cohort. I liked the mystery surrounding the evil fire dragon and who would end up being this feared dragon and the twist at the end of the book was good. Tariel, the MMC definitely sparked my interest and I'm curious about his development in the next book. I loved how he stood steadfastly by Everin and never doubted her and always tried to protect her. I appreciated that it was a friends to lovers situation instead of the typical enemies to lovers.

The main drawback was that I wanted more depth to the characters. It felt surface level and therefore I had difficulty connecting with the characters and being pulled into the story.

I received a free copy of this YA book and really enjoyed it. The story primarily follows Everin, a late bloomer who finds herself drawn into the world of dragon shifters. It was a fresh and compelling read that kept me hooked all the way through, especially with the twist at the end.

My only critique is that I wanted more background and character development for her main love interest, Tariel. Given his unique abilities, I expected him to have a larger role in the overall story. I also would have liked more closure regarding Everin's life before she was pulled into this new world.

That said, I found all of the main characters to be endearing, and the story itself was very engaging. I’m excited to see where the next book takes us, especially after the unexpected turn of events at the end.

I found this to be a really great read. The evil demon, Tynan, is waiting in the wings, ready to be the first demon to usher in Satan and the apocolypse. To try to thwart his advent, the Dragon Council targets three young people of dragon blood who have not shifted yet. Young Everin Haydon doesn't even know that dragons exist until she receives the Dragon's Summon to attend Drakon Academy. Everin, along with Tareil and Phoenix are in for a fantastical journey beyond what they could ever have imagined. The characters are likeable and the book is fast paced. I found that I could hardly put it down. I am really looking forward to reading the next book so I can find out what happens next. This book is suitable for teens or adults who love fantasy and magic. I totally recommend it. I received a complimentary copy of the book from the author via Voracious Readers Only.

I was so excited to be selected as an ARC reader for this one—huge thanks to the author!

This book was such a fun ride from beginning to end. Yes, it definitely gives off magical school vibes (you know which ones), but this story stands on its own, with a more mature tone and characters that feel real and relatable.

What I loved most were the friendships at the center of it all. The dynamics between the characters were heartfelt and believable—I found myself really rooting for them. The world-building was engaging without being overwhelming, and the pacing made it super easy to fly through in just a couple sittings.

Overall, it hit that perfect balance of magical escapism and emotional depth. I can’t wait to see where the story goes next!

I really enjoyed this book and I'm excited for book two. The book started a little slow for me but picked up nicely. The romance between Everin and Tariel is also slow. Personally, I think they should have been holding hands a little bit more than what was stated. I understand that this is their story, but I really would have loved a chapter back at the house with the siblings. I am hoping they won't be tossed to the side and forgotten as the series grows. There were a few mistakes in the writing but nothing major. Occasionally the segue is not as smooth as it could be. Keeping up with the different POV 's can be a challenge if you are not completely focused. Overall it's a great book and worth taking a chance on.

This is a YA academia with dragons and Harry Potter vibes.
Dive into the world of Everin, an underdog teenager who has just learned that dragon shifter blood flows through her veins and is sent to a special academy where she needs to learn to harness and control her powers. It is here she discovers the true meaning of friends, is confronted with conspiracies, end-of-days prophecies, and epic battles and must navigate a budding romance with a boy who would lay the world at her feet.
This is the first book and ends on a cliffhanger with a plot twist!

if you're a fan of the whimsical fantasy series (Netflix Wednesday, Harry Potter, School for good and evil) you're gonna like this book! It has all the reasons to be your new comfort book (personally, the comedic timing of the character won me over 🤣)! and the lore/backstory of the book is really thought out and it's not something thats just there for the plot yk? I mean the main storyline didn't fade into the background after the dynamics of the character progresses into something that's prominent. I recommend book lovers (who are into dragons especially) to read this wonderful book and get lost into the author/writer's imagination!

As someone who usually enjoys the romance side of young adult fiction, I thoroughly enjoyed the fantasy genre for a change.

I was hooked from the moment dragons were mentioned, and the story was incredibly gripping. I was also pleasantly surprised by how original the storyline felt.

This book features an academy for newly transitioned or yet-to-transition dragons, strong friendships, and a subtle hint of romance.

The pacing of the plot was well-done, keeping me constantly immersed. I found myself struggling to put the book down at times!

Thank you for the opportunity to read this ARC e-reader copy before its release date!

The Flames of Darkness draws readers into a world where danger, emotion, and mystery intertwine. La Kayshal creates a darker atmosphere that keeps the story intense while exploring the inner struggles of the characters.

At the heart of the book is the constant battle between light and darkness — not only in the world around the characters but also within themselves. The story explores themes of power, loyalty, and the difficult choices that arise when emotions and destiny collide.

The darker tone adds depth to the narrative, making the stakes feel real and the conflicts more gripping. The characters are faced with situations that push them to confront their fears, their pasts, and the consequences of their actions.

Overall, The Flames of Darkness offers an engaging dark fantasy journey filled with tension, emotional moments, and the pull between love and danger.

Dark, emotional, and filled with supernatural tension.

WOW! Just wow! This book was such a page-turner! I kept telling myself “just one more chapter” and suddenly I was way deeper into the story than I planned. Between the dragon shifters, magic system, and dark atmosphere, it was so easy to get pulled into the world.

I also loved that it breaks some classic YA tropes. The “pretty popular girl” isn’t just the stereotypical mean girl. She actually has depth and empathy which made the character dynamics way more interesting.

If you love high-stakes YA ✨clean✨ romantasy with dragons and magic, definitely add this one to your TBR!

I liked this book a lot! It is a YA magical academy book that has young love, action and secret society vibes! I look forward to seeing where this series goes! It has a lot of potential to be fantastic.

You love the characters and their found family elements that resonate with Harry Potter lovers! I did not see the way this book ended happening. The twist definitely comes out of left field which is refreshing. And the banter is always my favorite part.

I liked Tariel and Everin and I am soo wanting to see their relationship grow and who/what dragon Tariel becomes. How does he instinctively know what he knows.
