My name is Tina Alberino and I wrote this book to save you. This is not another lame book full of recycled beauty business advice. This book serves as the literary equivalent of a kick in the ass and a punch to the throat. You hold in your hands a raw depiction of the true nature of this industry and a compendium of harsh lessons. The vast majority of these lessons aren’t taught in schools and don't appear in textbooks; they're learned through experience—often in a way that is less-than-gentle. This book will help you navigate the sometimes tumultuous waters of the beauty business; they run deep, the currents are swift, and the tides shift quickly. The journey can certainly be treacherous. Don't learn these lessons the hard way.
I came across Tina's blog researching compensation plans for salons, and went down the rabbit hole reading article after article. I love her blunt, not sugar coated, no nonsense approach. This book is a great reference book and I highly recommend it to any beauty professional. I'm planning to open a salon and will have my employees read this book. I share a lot of the same philosophies as her, but she also opened my eyes about a few concepts. Can't wait to read the Salon Owners book.
A must read for anyone in the beauty industry, but especially for those of us navigating the early days as newly licensed professionals. I also highly recommend Tina’s blog “This Ugly Beauty Business.” The only reason I took off a star was for the typos littered throughout my copy. I can ignore a few but they did become a nuisance after awhile. A minor annoying issue for otherwise fantastic content.
I love Tina's matter of fact tell it like it is approach. As a salon owner I was having some issues with the business side of things and thanks to Tina, I think I have found what I'm doing wrong. She's very insightful and experienced. Every stylist young and old should read it. I'm going to give this book as a graduation gift to all my beauty school interns!
Required reading for anyone in the beauty industry. I found the information to be incredibly helpful and written with a great sense of humor. Would recommend to all my licensed beauty sisters (and brothers) and also business owners. I would send it around but I feel like I'm going to need to reference it time and time again.
This book is a good guide for graduating students in the beauty industry and offers valuable tips on how to conduct yourself in the salon. It has great advice for those who want to manage or own a salon/micro-salon and will save many people years of wasted energy. I feel like it's geared more towards owners or those wanting to own a salon but it is useful for those professionals starting out. I really understood my value and saw a different point of view about the age old belief "the customer is always right." I enjoyed the hilariously casual humour this book is filled with.
