Writing has always been my passion. It was my favourite hour a week at primary school, and I started on my first, truly abysmal book as a teenager. So it wasn’t a difficult decision to study literature at university which led to an MA in Creative Writing. I spent a long time writing kids’ books, including funny fairy tales, dystopic adventures and serious issue-based YA, before switching to murder mysteries last year.

I grew up in a crime fiction family and spent a long time dreaming up the idea for my detective Izzy Palmer’s debut novel. A Corpse Called Bob is my first full-length book for adults in what is already becoming a long series.

I’m a Welsh-Irish-Englishman originally from South London but now living with my French/Spanish wife and slightly muddled daughter in Burgos, a beautiful city in the north of Spain. I write overlooking the Castilian countryside, trying not to be distracted by the vultures and red kites that fly past my window each day.

Book six in the Marius Quin Mysteries series. I have previously read and enjoyed #4 and #5.

It is Christmas in London in 1928. Novelist and private detective, Marius Quin, is preparing for a quiet holiday when Lady Bella Montague's Aunt Adele is murdered in her own home. Marius and Bella have previously worked on solving murders together and set off to do the same here.

This is mostly a light and cosy mystery but it occasionally gets slowed down by Bella's grieving over the death of her fiancé . Marius tries his best but he really needs to tell her soon how he feels about her. The author writes well, and and it is very pleasant spending time with his characters. I will be continuing with this series.

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book.

My Thoughts /

First and foremost, a huge THANK YOU to NetGalley, Storm Publishing and author, Benedict Brown for providing me with a copy of this publication, which allows me to provide you with an unbiased review.

The snow falls, carollers sing, and a killer plots his next move…

The Holly Village Murders is book 6 in the Marius Quin mystery series written by author, Benedict Brown; and, as this reader seems to do more often than not, I have read this one out of order. In my defence, how could I not read this now(?), when the book cover and title are just so enticing? And, if both of those things were not enough of a calling card; when reading the author's notes in the foreword, I was (more than) pleasantly surprised to find out that he has written this instalment as a standalone story. So, as my mother would say to us all at dinnertime – 'What are you all waiting for? Dig in!'

For those that haven't had the pleasure - Marius Quin is a returned soldier who now dabbles as a mystery novelist and amateur detective. Together with his childhood sweetheart but now best friend, Lady Isabella (Bella) Montague the pair are partners in the Marius and Co. Detective Agency.

It's Christmastime 1928, and the Montague family are hosting a party in the Great Hall of their family home. Everyone was invited, and all the guests took the opportunity to dress up in their finest. Marius, upon seeing that there was one elderly lady that seemed to be all alone, took it upon himself to strike up a conversation. The woman in question was Bella's aunt, Adele Leach, who lives by herself in a cottage at Holly Village. Their conversation took a stark turn however, when Adele mentioned that she believed that someone in the Village was in danger. She'd been to the Police with her concerns but they sent her on her way – saying that they didn't have time to investigate the overactive imaginations of an old lady.

When Bella receives word not long after, that Aunt Adele was found dead in her Holly Village cottage, and that the police are not treating it as suspicious, she is concerned. But then, when Marius fills Bella in on the conversation he had with Adele at the party, Bella realises that her aunt's death is suspicious and likely, murder. So Bella, together with Marius (and Percy the dog) head to Holly Village to investigate. When they reach Adele's cottage, Bella realises that a priceless painting has gone missing from the mantle. It was her Aunt's favourite and Bella is positive that she wouldn't have parted with it for anything. Gadzookers! Where was it?

When Adele's neighbour, Ivy Frazel (what a great name!) turns up dead, both Bella and Marius start to think the worst – that there is someone systematically murdering the residents of Holly Village. It seems the local Sergeant and his Constable are totally out of their depth and failing at any and all attempts at successfully investigating what happened. So it is up to Marius and Bella, with some much sort after help from Inspector Valentine Lovebrook to untangle scandals and secrets before Christmas turns fatal.

Bookish Yays:
🤩 Our protagonists, Marius, and Bella, are antithetical characters. Yet despite their differences, the two share a strong bonding friendship. It's their complementary differences, that make the relationship work - she is the diplomat to his clumsiness; the voice of reason to assuage his roguishness. The witty dialogue and humorous banter between our protagonists made for engaging and entertaining reading.

🤩 The plot is not your usual roaring 20s theme. Instead of flappers, jazz, and dance halls, you have a sleepy enclave of retired aristocrats and eccentric pensioners, false identities and long-buried secrets.

🤩 This was the sixth book in the series but the author has written it as a stand-alone read.

With thanks to NetGalley and especially to one of my favourite publishers, Storm Publishing 💗 for the much appreciated arc in return for an honest review. All opinions expressed in this review are my own. The publication date is currently set for November 10, 2025.

4 stars

The sixth book in the Marius Quin series (4 stars and this isn’t even my favorite series of Brown’s…and I am not a huge fan of cozies, I just happen to like his.). Since this one is a Christmas book, Brown does as he does and makes this a BIT of a standalone (there are references to some big life events of the characters, of course.)

Author Marius and his partner in detecting/childhood friend/he wishes love interest but definitely not the time for that Bells investigate the death of Bella’s honorary aunt Adele who lives in the love Holly Village area of London (a real place as are all the locations in Brown’s books;) it’s clear the murderer is from within the Village.

Our Marius is growing up. This is the first book where he really reflects on his war experiences and, generally, he’s just a more thoughtful, more mature…dare I say it? Man? OK, he’s still got a lot of boy in him yet, but I love this new Marius. There were some very cute parts to this book and I really enjoyed it except for the fact that Benedict Brown continues to ignore my pleas to use Percy’s full name. Percy’s public is crying out to you!

Another great murder mystery for Marius and Bella to solve; this one was about someone close to Bella and her family; also it happened just around Christmas time. The plot wasn't dangerous or suspenseful but it still had a complicated puzzle to solve.
I enjoyed it thoroughly, despite this book not resolving anything ongoing from the previous books. Apparently, this was a holiday-break mystery novel only. I'm hoping that all those unresolved plot lines move forward significantly in the next one. I'm just extremely impatient to find out how it all connects (missing father, murdered fiancé , crime syndicate etc.)

December 1928. Lady Bella's "Aunt" Adele has died after attending the family party. So Bella and Marius decide to visit her home at Holly Village in Highgate only to become suspicious about her death. Eventually they inform friend Detective Inspector Lovebrook for his help. But what will their investigation reveal.
An entertaining and well-written historical mystery with its likeable main characters. Another good addition to this enjoyable series.

The book was exceptionally well-written, and I found myself completely engrossed in the story. I thoroughly enjoyed the unique and intriguing characters, and the book brought a delightful sense of holiday cheer to my reading experience. It also provided me with a delightful mystery to unravel. First, if you are not a fan of cozy mysteries this might not be the series for you. I have listened to the first audio books in the Marcus Quinn series( perfect books while I knit) and I find them enjoyable. The research into these books is excellent and you definitely come away with historical knowledge of the time period.

Story starts at Christmastime 1928 in London. The snow is falling and London is beautiful with the Holyday decorations. Lady Bella Montague and her family are hosting a fabulous party in the Great Hall in their home.
Everyone is dressing in their finest. Marius Quin a very close friend of Bella’s notices an elderly white hair lady by herself. When he greets her, she mentions she had been to the police because she believes someone is in danger. He believes she must be very upset to tell this to a stranger. However she soon disappears. He was told that she drove away in her car.
When he tells Bella about the woman she states - “Oh that was Adele Leach, a dear woman I call my aunt as she took take of me when Nanny was on holiday”. She assures him not to worry that she will call her.

The party was a success and appears a good time was had by all.
The next few days Marius and Bella are ready for a quiet Christmas. However, Bella got word that Auntie Adele was found dead in her picture-perfect cottage.
Marcus and Bella immediately head to Holly Village where Adele had lived
As they investigate (Marcus is a writer and calls himself a pretend Detective) Bella notices that Adele’s expensive painting is missing. Bella remembers the painting from when she was a child. There is another painting in its place but if you look closely one can see that the new one is smaller.
They are convinced that Addie was murdered, perhaps the murderer is a thief and Adele came home and found him.
Next Ivy Frazel, Adele frizzed and somewhat peculiar neighbor to Adele who lives at #1 Holly Village is found dead. .

As the investigation continues, Marcus and Bella discover that over the past several years others have been murdered seemly shortly before Christmas at the first snowfall.
Story kept me curious- Whodunit and why was a surprise

I am looking forward to more Marius and Bella sleuthing adventures, also hoping their relationship develops into more of a romance.– perhaps Book #7!

I have read several Benedict Brown stories and I know the back of the book is full of information – a must read. In fact, a story in its self!
In “About This Book’ there are many things I found interesting and am sure you will as well.
Here is one~
In 1037 the real person who was commission to building Holly Village was Angela Burdett-Courtis just twenty-three and was the richest woman in Britain. She was also a close friend with Charles Dickens.

~ In Research - Mr. Brown has a very detailed section of what he learned while researching.
~I Words and References which is a fun section entitled ‘Words and Phrases’ with a glossary of Brit words and or slang aka unusual vocabulary
-E.g. Axminister – a maker of fine English rugs.
Fumsup ~ a good luck charm in the shape of a baby.
By Jove ~ Another word for gosh.
Plus many fun others!

~There is also a Character List with new as well as Returning Characters
I actually wish I read about the new Characters as the beginning.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Storm publishing for an ARC of this novel.

Benedict Brown’s Marius Quin mystery series is set in Jazz Age England, a not quite so heady version of Jazz Age America. The sadness of the Great War’s losses lingers; it is notable in this book, in which both the lead male character, Marius Quin, and his childhood friend, detective agency partner, and secret crush, Bella (Lady) Montague, remain affected by the trauma.

The story begins with a spectacular Christmas ball at the Montague estate. Marius overhears a beautiful elderly woman seemingly talking to herself about a possible murderer endangering Holly Village, where she lives alone. Naturally he has to find out more, but, unable to make any sense of her story, he tells Bella. The woman turns out to be her adoptive ‘Aunt’ Adele, about whom Marius has some vague memories, having been raised in the Montague household as a servant’s child. Once very important to Bella, they remained only sporadically in touch as she grew into adulthood. The wealthy widow is an artist and art collector. Bella is overjoyed to catch up, and promises a visit soon.

Within a couple of weeks, Bella is informed that Adele was found dead in her cottage. Accompanied by Marius and his faithful dog Percy, they check out the premises. Bella refuses to entertain the notion that Adele died of natural causes, despite her age. She is overcome by guilt and regret for not having maintained closer ties. Then she notices what all others, including the local police, had overlooked. The famous Manet painting that had taken pride of place in her cottage was missing. Soon a neighbour is also dead. Now Marius is prepared to think that what he overheard at the ball was not just an old woman’s mumblings after a few drinks. Had Adele known something that the police she tried to warn had not taken seriously? Was her death more than just a robbery gone wrong?

Although the sixth volume in the popular cozy mystery series, this novel, as the author explains in his prologue, is an intentional step outside of it. There are a few familiar characters, of course, Percy being a favorite. That makes the book an effective stand-alone for readers looking for a good seasonal read. It is engagingly written, the lead characters are charming and sensitively rendered, the 1920s British countryside setting in winter is lovely, and the mystery makes for a compelling and Christmas-appropriate read. Providing you like a little theft and murder with your Christmas carols!

Book Review: *The Holly Village Murders: A Cozy Christmas Mystery* by Benedict Brown

Rating: 4 Stars

I recently picked up *The Holly Village Murders* by Benedict Brown, and I have to say—it was a thoroughly enjoyable read that made for a perfect holiday mystery. Set in London during December of 1928, the story kicks off when Lady Bella Montague and her companion Marius Quin learn that Bella’s dear Aunt Adele has died under suspicious circumstances in her quaint cottage at Holly Village, a charming enclave filled with retired aristocrats and quirky residents. What should have been a quiet Christmas quickly turns tense as Bella and Marius uncover that Aunt Adele’s death was anything but natural.

As they dig deeper, they find that a priceless Manet painting has gone missing, and a cryptic note left behind hints at some dark secrets lurking beneath the village’s idyllic surface. When another murder shocks the community during the Christmas party, it becomes clear that the sleepy village is harboring a dangerous killer. Bella and Marius enlist the help of their friend Detective Inspector Lovebrook and navigate a tangled web of deception, false identities, and long-hidden scandals to get to the truth before more lives are lost.

One of the first things that caught my eye was the beautiful cover—truly evocative of the festive yet mysterious atmosphere within the pages. The historical setting feels vivid and authentic, transporting you straight to late 1920s England with its elegant social nuances and cozy village life. The characters, especially Bella and Marius, are warm and engaging, making it easy to root for them throughout their investigation.

What I particularly appreciated about this book was how well-written and immersive it was. The pacing kept me hooked, balancing moments of holiday charm with suspenseful twists. It felt like curling up with a classic Agatha Christie mystery but with a fresh, festive twist—perfect for fans of cozy mysteries who enjoy a blend of elegance and intrigue.

Overall, *The Holly Village Murders* is a delightful addition to the series that I would highly recommend to anyone looking for a charming, twisty mystery to get into this holiday season. It’s got all the ingredients for a satisfying read: intriguing characters, a compelling plot, and just the right touch of Christmas spirit. Definitely four stars from me!

It's 1928 and Lady Bella Montague is holding a Christmas party for the first time in years. At the party her childhood friend Marius meets Bella's auntie Adele, who almost unintentionally confides in him that she's got some serious concerns about one of her neighbours. Less than 24 hours later, Adele is found dead in her home. Bella and Marius are determined to find the truth, and to find it they're going to have to become a part of the small, peculiar community Adele lived in.

I have to say I really enjoyed this. There are a couple of things I didn't love - namely the timeline. The whole story takes place over two days; which given the amount which happens is very hard to wrap my head around as a reader. A couple of the semi-central characters are a bit two dimensional and that definitely makes it a bit too easy to spot the red herrings at points. I would have loved maybe one more twist in the tale but that's just me.

Aside from that though, this is a lovely, cozy, festive murder mystery. I'm a newcomer to this series and its author but I have to say I didn't feel like that held me back - I was given enough information about the background and the key players that I didn't feel lost at any point, am now hugely invested in Marius and Bella, and am now very likely to catch up with the rest of the series. The mystery was fair to the reader, you were given enough breadcrumbs and clues to follow to deduce who the murderer was without it being spelled out. Percy the Basset Hound is a fantastic character in himself, and it was great to see Bella written as a considered female character - independent without being reckless and able to hold her own to defend her perspectives.

I loved the attention to detail in the book, it felt like a great immersion in 1920s London and that is thanks to the extensive research put in by the author. I really appreciated the fact that the ongoing storylines in the rest of the Marius Quin series were paused to allow this to be a standalone book; and the glossary of terms at the end of the book is a delight.

The Holly Village Murders by Benedict Brown is the sixth book in the Marius Quin mystery series. This time we join Marius Quin and Lady Bella Montague as they investigate Bella’s Aunt Adele’s death at Adele’s home in Holly Village.

Marius had unknowingly met Adele at the Montague’s Christmas party as she was talking to herself about a suspicious man who had the look of a killer. She disappears from the party as Marius is getting her something to drink. When Bella tells Marius of Adele’s death, he tells her about his talk with her, and this leads to them going to Holly Village to investigate. It is suspected that she died from a heart attack, and the death is not considered suspicious. However, when another elderly person is murdered in the village, Adele’s death is looked at differently by Marius and Bella. They get DI Lovebrook to come and help them investigate and he leans on the incompetent local constabulary for a more thorough investigation.

With the disappearance of Adele’s Manet painting from her house, it is suspected that robbery led to her dying from shock, and Marius discovers a clue under the rug that might lead to the killer. The ending is a surprise when the killer is revealed. I think at some point this person will be a viable suspect, and you will think “no”… but there they are at the end – the killer.

I really enjoy how Marius and Bella fumble their way through their investigations, always questioning themselves and their approach, which is quite humorous. I love each one of these stories so far and each story leaves me wondering if Marius will ever be able to reclaim Bella’s love or if that time has come and gone. I am looking forward to the next adventure of Marius and Bella.

Readers, don’t skip out on the “About This Book” or “Research” sections of this book. You will learn some interesting facts, like that Holly Village is a real place!

I'd read the previous books in this series, and this one is probably my favourite of the lot. It's Christmas time, but murder has no respect for the holiday. When someone close to Bella is killed, its up to our dynamic duo (and Percy) to solve the case and save Christmas.

I loved that there was a trail of breadcrumbs to follow, it was very possible to work out the killer in advance, and it was fair. When Marius and Bella are explaining the whole thing, you can follow along and see the little clues that solve the case. I kept forgetting how quickly things happen. At one point near the end of the book, Bella mentions that this all started yesterday. It was a shock to realise so much had happened in such a short space of time, there were a lot of events crammed into what was about 48 hours of in book time.

Marius continues to grow as a character, its been a joy to see him move along his character arc. He is still struggling from his time in the Great War, and there is a scene with fireworks that was very moving. I like that his past as a solider isn't just a throwaway moment, but very much a part of who he is now.

The author as ever, is clearly serious about his historical research and his notes at the end are always a delight. I don't expect cosy murder mysteries to be perfectly accurate, but with Brown's books I can relax in the knowledge that its almost certainly going to be.

A festive delight and worth a read as the colder weather draws in.

This book was so difficult to get into. I finally got interested around 100 pages in then fell off again 200. I really wanted to love this murder mystery with a bit of love in it but I just couldn’t. I’m sorry I feel really bad because I have never read this author before. I was excited to see how it went. Basically you have the two main characters who have grown up together that are now detectives. Marius signed up for war and was too scared to ask the woman he loved who he had grown up with to marry him. Lady Isabella apparently was in love with someone else later but he has passed away and our author main character again has not learned anything and can’t tell the woman he loves how he feels. It was really all quite disappointing. I thought in the end maybe. They come together to investigate the murder of Lady Bella’s Aunt Adele in the magical Holly Village. Through multiple interviews and clues Adele left they are able to figure out who had killed her. After loads of assumptions and pretty much accusing most of the village until they got it right. Which might be a shock or might not. Marius in the end states the obvious about not being clever investigators of course after looking back through a clearer mindset at the actual clues.

I was given this book through NetGalley and Storm Publishing. This is my honest opinion for what it is worth.

*I received a free ARC from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for my honest review*

This was the my least favorite of the Marius Quinn books so far, but I am not completely sure why. Everything about it was 'fine' and I guess I have just come to expect more from these novels. I have also never really been a big fan of Bella and she as a larger role in the actual detective work here so that could be it. My biggest problem with character is not completely her fault, it is how Marius goes on and on and on about how perfect she is and how he is in love with her. As readers we have not really had a chance to see what it is he loves so much about her. I kind of wish there would be someone else who offered her some competition for Marius's affection - he really needs to get out there and meet more potential romantic partners. She does really take him for granted, but then again, all she has to do is snap her fingers and he is right there for her. As far as things I did like about this book, I did like how there was a little more about Marius's experiences in WWI and what he still carries with him from that time. There are also plenty of suspects and some interesting twists and turns. I thought I had it figured out and was pleasantly surprised when the actual killer was revealed. I am looking forward to the next book to see what will happen with the ongoing mysteries from the earlier books, especially with regard to Marius's father.

Thank you Netgalley for the ARC! What a delightful, cosy historical mystery read! Before I begin reviewing this book, let me tell you, if you’re like me and love a good buddy read during Christmas time, this is a fab book to focus on. I buddy read it with my mother and we both honestly loved it!

This book is set in London in 1928, and the story begins just as Marius and Lady Bella Montague are anticipating a peaceful Christmas. But instead, they’re plunged into a murder investigation when Bella’s beloved Aunt Adele meets a shocking end in her picture-perfect cottage in Holly Village. The setting, an enclave of eccentric, retired aristocrats, is absolute gold, adding layers of wit and intrigue to the proceedings.

What made this book such a perfect Christmas read for me was the brilliant fusion of genres. You get the ultimate winter ambience, the snow falls, carollers sing, and there’s even a festive Christmas party, all of which heightened the historical, cosy feeling for me. The book kept me fully engaged and guessing what would happen next, making it an ideal choice for a buddy read over the Christmas holiday.

The only reason I’ve not given this a five-star rating is because it’s the sixth book in the series. As a new reader, I did feel like I’d missed some of the established nuances or past character development. That’s the only reason it’s not a full five stars, but other than that, it’s an absolutely ideal Christmas read!

A festive murder mystery with heart — but one that didn’t quite hold my attention all the way through.

This is part of a series, but the author kindly notes at the beginning that, since it’s a Christmas novel, all cliffhangers are put on hold. That makes it perfectly fine to read as a standalone, which was a relief, since I haven’t read the previous books.

I was genuinely excited to dive into this story. A murder mystery set during the holidays, with a touch of romance, sounded like the perfect cozy-yet-suspenseful read. Unfortunately, I found it hard to connect at first. The story took quite a while to pull me in, I started to get invested around the 100-page mark, but towards the end, my interest slipped again.

That said, the writing itself was solid, and I appreciated the mix of festive atmosphere and darker mystery elements. I really wanted to love it, especially since this was my first time reading this author, but it just didn’t click for me as much as I’d hoped.

Still, it has charm and potential for readers who enjoy slower-paced mysteries with a seasonal twist. For me, it lands at about 3.5 stars, — enjoyable in parts, but not one I’d rush to revisit.

A fun, cozy Christmas mystery.

Marius Quin and Lady Bella Montague are preparing for Christmas 1928 in London. Then they find out that Bella's Aunt Adele has died suddenly. When visiting her home in Holly Village, they learn she was murdered and her Manet painting is missing. After another resident in the community is also murdered, Marius and Bella must redouble their efforts to figure out who the murderer is before Christmas is ruined for the retired aristocrats and eccentric pensioners who call this place home.

I really enjoyed the setting of this book. Benedict Brown clearly does his research and the world of 1920s London is very vivid. I also enjoyed the mystery and meeting all the curious characters in the community. There are certainly plenty of suspects!

I think the biggest struggle is that this is the sixth book in the series. It mainly operates as a way for readers to revisit favorite characters during Christmas. However, since I haven't read the rest of the series, I did struggle a bit to fully connect with the characters.

Overall, if you enjoy the series or Christmas mysteries, definitely give this one a try. It's a good choice for reading while cozied up with a cup of tea (or cocoa!).

Thank you to NetGalley and Storm Publishing for providing an advanced copy of this book for review. All opinions are my own.

While attending a Christmas party, Marius Quin speaks with an elderly lady who says she is concerned about a man in her neighborhood, but the police insists there is no reason to worry. When Adele Leach is found dead in her home, the local police dismiss it as just old age and a natural death. While at Adele's home, Bella realizes that a valuable painting is missing. Lacking support from the local police, Marius places a call to Scotland Yard to speak with Detective Inspector Lovebrook. After Marius and Bella explained the situation, Inspector Lovebrook went to speak with the officers at the police station. As Inspector Lovebrook heads back to London, Marius and Bella return to Holly Village to continue their investigation.

When a second senior is found dead, Marius and Bella are sure she was murdered and pursue their investigation.

What happened to Adele's painting? Was her death murder or an accident? When a second victim is found, Marius and Bella are wondering if the two deaths are related! Can Marius and Bella unravel the mystery before more people are hurt or killed? What is the source of all the hatred in the community? Is it personal or just Vindictiveness?

Benedict Brown has another wonderful mystery to keep the reader guessing clear to the end. There are plenty of twists, turns, and red herrings throughout the book.

I've enjoyed all of the Marius Quin mysteries, but this one... something about it broke it out of a box I didn't know I'd put it in. Up until now, Marius Quin has been a, "While I wait for another Lord Edgington" filler. I enjoyed them, rated them highly, and eagerly awaited the next. Unless... another Lord Edgington came out first. Now... Whoa. I'd have a seriously hard time choosing if two came out at he same time now.

A lot of my love for this came in seeing Marius grow quite a lot in this one. He's still himself. Bella would recognize him and might not be aware of any changes (they're mostly internal), but he matured by leaps this time. And yet, it wasn't too much.

As for the mystery itself, Brown got me. Usually, I figure out who the killer is pretty quickly. Sometimes, I convince myself I'm wrong and latch onto someone else, but I almost always get the person. Not this time. I explained away every potential suspect even before Marius and Bella did... well, except for the one I decided was "the one." In fact, I think that's my problem. I found a suspect, found supporting evidence, worked out the how and why, and just held fast, despite all clues working out to exactly what Brown shows us happened.

Well played, Mr. Brown. Well played.

May the finger drumming commence.

The holiday story takes a break from the continuing investigations but it does not leave off the emotional impact. Bella is not her usual self and Marius is keeping his guard down about how he feels, at least with himself. In the midst of all toys a chance conversation leads to the duo investigating a death which officials have dismissed.

They masquerade as a couple ( unintentionally) to live in the house that is the starting point of the plot. This book involves a lot of head scratching and even giving up before clear heads prevail and both figure out the culprit in sync.

The two- part notes at the end definitely make the entire story feel more impactful. This particular adventure was not as gripping as the other two, mainly because it is sad to watch Bella’s conflicting emotions. I think until that plotline is resolved, this might overpower any ongoing investigation. Although the break from other continuing storylines should mean this book would work for new readers I don’t think going in blind without prior knowledge of the characters would help in this book.
I received the book as an ARC thanks to NetGalley and the publishers but the review is entirely based on my own reading experience of this and other books in the series.

Although this is the 6th book in the Marius Quin Mystery series, as it is a Christmas themed story, all outstanding investigations have been suspended (and are only lightly mentioned), and this can easily be read as a stand-alone.

When Bella's self-styled aunt died mysteriously, Marius and Belle head to Holly Village to investigate. Holly Village is an eccentric, somewhat exclusive enclave of homes, essentially an entire small village of suspects. And is par for the course, in the midst of their investigation there is another death of a villager, as well as some dandy red herrings.

I will admit that personally, this book did not hold my interest and I kept forgetting who was who, but as always your mileage may vary. I do look forward to getting back to solving the murder of Bella's fiance Gilbert, and delving more into the long-ago disappearance of Marius' father.

But as always, I absolutely adore the author's extended notes and background information on various events and individuals that influenced the book. I honestly could read an entire book about the interesting things Benedict Brown has uncovered. 3.5 stars overall.

I received an ARC from Storm Publishing, via NetGalley, in exchange for an honest review.

I thank NetGalley and Storm Publishing for an advance reader copy of The Holly Village Murders. All opinions and comments are my own.

Marius Quinn, in this Christmas-themed mystery finds himself wondering if there is indeed coal in his stocking when a dear friend of Lady Bella’s family dies under suspicious circumstances (at least, so it seems to Marius and Bella). Bella turns to her mystery-book writer friend for help, and since he’s been in love with her for years (and six books now), how can Marius resist?

There’s plenty of suspects to choose from (the back-and-forth discussions about each one is very entertaining), enough red herrings to fill a bait box to the top, Detective Inspector Lovebrook comes along to lend his expertise, and did I mention we get a tour of Highgate Cemetery, complete with references to some of its famous inhabitants? The writing style is top drawer, and the action moves along at just the right pace. Author Benedict Brown thoroughly entertains his audience, in The Holly Village Murders.

And to top everything off, the Author’s Notes and Research are always a delight to read. Now, if only Lady Bella would open her eyes… fictionally speaking. Marius definitely deserves it.

3 1/2 stars. A mostly standalone holiday mystery in which Marius Quin, former WWI soldier, mystery novelist and part-time detective with the help of his childhood friend and detective partner Lady Bella investigate the surprising death of Bella's "aunt" who revealed to Marius the night before she worried about a neighbor taking advantage of his wife's money. Further investigation at the house in the enclosed little community of retired upper-class members shows that Bella's aunt was watching her neighbors with a telescope and keeping cryptic messages. Then someone else dies. Will there be a happy ending?

A delicious mystery with holiday decor and the requisite seasonal feelings at the end. You don't need to have read any others in this series to understand what is going on. It is slowed a bit by Bella's continuing mourning for her fiancée and Quin's mooning over Bella but overall a nice holiday mystery with entertaining banter.

Benedict Brown produces entertaining and funny mystery series. He is well worth looking into.

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC in exchange for an honest opinion.

A delightful cozy mystery and the perfect book to kick off the Christmas season. Mystery novelist Marius Quin and the love of his life, Lady Bella, arrive in Holly Village to look into the death of Bella’s beloved “Aunt” Adele. Though Holly Village appears to be an idyllic place for its residents to enjoy their later years, something darker lurks beneath the charm. Could the culprit be the caretaker, the antique dealer and his wife, the self-styled “Baroness,” or even the cockney couple who seem distinctly out of place?

Marius and Bella are endearing amateur sleuths who bumble their way—quite charmingly—toward the truth. One of the joys of this series is watching both characters evolve, especially Marius, who reflects on his wartime past and continues to struggle with his relationship with Bella.

As a fun aside, I could vividly picture Holly Village because I peeked through the gates of the real location near Highgate Cemetery a few years ago.

I highly recommend this series—start with Book 1 to fully enjoy the character development. Thank you to NetGalley and the Storm publisher for the ARC.

Marius and Bella are on another adventure - once again, it's someone close to Bella who has been murdered (poor Bella!) and it's up to our intrepid duo to solve the mystery of who wanted her honorary aunt dead. What did she know? Why was it worthy of killing her over it? Who had the most to gain (or lose) by her death?

As Marius and Bella investigate in what sounds like a lovely little secluded enclave, the secrets deepen and darken as the long nights advance ever=closer to Christmas Day.

With cameo appearances by Marius and Bella's families, we are treated to a multi-layered case that focuses on why thievery has escalated to murder - or is that just another red herring? Much to love here, it you are seeking a Christmas-y atmosphere for a complex puzzle. Marius still guards his heart from Bella - wisely so, seeing as close people in her life have died recently - but as a reader, I keep hoping that she will realize how much Marius still cares for her. Sigh. Have to wait for her to figure it out.

I received an ARC; this is my honest review.

London, 1928. Marius Quin and Lady Bella Montague are ready for a quiet Christmas when they learn that Bella’s beloved Aunt Adele has met a shocking end in her picture-perfect cottage. Immediately heading for Holly Village, the enclave of retired aristocrats and eccentric pensioners where Adele lived, they discover that her death was far from natural. The dead woman’s priceless Manet painting has vanished, and a cryptic note she left hints at scandalous goings-on among her neighbours. Then another resident is murdered during the village Christmas party, it’s clear that a devious killer is preying on the sleepy community.
The sixth book in the series & another well written cosy mystery. It could be read on its own but I’ve loved getting to know Marius & Bella & I’ve loved the changes in their relationship. There are of course, twists & turns before the villain is revealed. This book had a gentle pace but never lagged & kept my interest all the way through. I look forward to the next book
I voluntarily read and reviewed a special copy of this book; all thoughts and opinions are my own

So many great things to say about this newest instalment in the Marius Quinn series! It's set in a rather quaint little village peopled by eccentric folk~ perfect for this series of murders! There's lively banter amongst the characters as they ready themselves for the holiday season and the repartee between Bella and Marius is quite refreshing considering all she's been through. As for Marius, he's subtly becoming a more mature person who is now able to see past his own concerns to be considerate, aware, and compassionate towards others. He has a ways to go but he's on the right path. Certainly also to be read and enjoyed are all the historical notes at the end of the book. Brown does considerable research so as to be accurate in his descriptions. One can learn a lot ~ dog food carts, onion sellers, and an array of other pedlars not common to us now but very much part of society then. I would love to see Browns other series with Lord Edgington, as well as Marius Quinn, as a television series or miniseries!
