Sometimes Love Catches You Out Of Step

Convincing my agent to sign me up for the Come Dancing With Me Christmas special was the best decision I’ve made in years, especially when my partner turns out to be the show’s stunning ‘bad boy’, Nico.

I’m ready to put on my sequins and my dancing shoes, but first I need to figure out how to defrost Nico’s attitude towards me. He seems under the impression that as an ex-boyband superstar I’m going to be a diva, and not even some homemade gingerbread is helping!

But the more hours we spend together in training, the more we begin to connect. Nico might be prickly but he’s the first person who begins to see me as more than my past. And as things heat up on and off the dancefloor, I realise I don’t want to let Nico go.

Our connection is only supposed to be temporary, but can we find a way to make it last forever?

Love at Frost Sight by Charlie Novak is a stand alone, MM, holiday romance. I love the cover and the blurb made me think of how much I used to love the show, Dancing With the Stars. I couldn’t resist picking it up.

Toby Darling is an ex boy-band superstar. He now spends his time writing music under a pen name, and doing some high end modeling. It’s been nearly four years since his band, Underground Dreaming broke up. The members are all still very close friends. They are all still well known enough that he is easily recognized and can’t do much without security. Toby loves the show, Come Dancing With Me. He talks his agent into working to get him on their Christmas Special. When they agree and he finds out he is going to be partnered with the shows hottest professional dancer who also comes off as a bit of a bad boy, he’s beyond excited.

Nico Hamilton has long been one of the pro dancers on Come Dancing With Me. His previous partner was a nightmare and he’s not sure what to think when he’s paired with an ex boy band star. He’s pleasantly surprised when he meets his new partner. He seems genuine and is a hard worker. It’s a plus that his cook keeps sending delicious cookies to their rehearsals.

As these two get to know each other better, attractions soon develop which they eventually give in to. Nico reveals his softer side and Toby turns out to be the most cheerful, positive, hardworking partner Nico has ever had. The closer they get to the show’s date to be aired, the more they realize that what they have is special and that they don’t want to let it end.

I enjoyed seeing the process these two went through on their journey to learn their dance and also how they eventually let each other in emotionally. Both of the characters were sweet but I guess I didn’t get as invested as I had hoped I would. It was cute but didn’t give me the butterflies I crave. If you’re a fan of any of the dancing competition programs, though, you’ll probably enjoy this.

Ok this was such a good Christmas book! Loved the reality show dance competition! I’ll read anything Charlie Novak writes so my opinion may not count for much, but I loved this one so much! I’ll read anything set in her universe.

Definitely put me in the festive mood!

I loved all the references to Strictly and the curse 😂 Super entertaining and it was really easy to picture everything that was happening because I used to watch it religiously.

Toby was adorable and I'm so glad he found someone because he definitely shouldn't be lonely.

Nico falling in love was fun to read and his pre-judgement of who he thought Toby would be was so funny and way off the mark.

I really want some shortbread now too!

I received an ARC of this book from The Author Agency, and this is my honest review

A Joyfully Jay review.

4.25 stars

Much like Mrs. Nolan’s duck-print tin, this story was a delight to open and see what tasty treats awaited inside. Toby is such a sweetheart and Nico didn’t stand a chance against him. I liked how Nico became more sympathetic towards Toby as he learned to look past the boyband heartthrob shell Toby had had to put up for so long. Through Nico’s own character growth, he helped Toby step out of that shell and feel comfortable being himself around someone new.

This book did a good job of holding the threat of conflict at the edge of the story, while keeping the story itself light and sweet.

Love at Frost Sight by Charlie Novak is about Toby Darling who is a former boyband member (and the biggest sweetheart!) who joins the Christmas special of a popular dance competition show. He's paired up with pro dancer Nico who is a tiny bit of a grump and semi-guarded. Toby has had a crush on Nico for a long time and was secretly hoping to get paired up with Nico and they begin to develop a sweet friendship (and more) as they go through practices.

I looooved this book. As in I was like smiling at my Kindle 98% of the time while reading this. It was adorable and heartwarming and honestly just all around joy in book form. Toby is a burst of cutesy sunshine and Nico is just the most perfect grumpybutt. Their chemistry was PRECIOUS, their banter was so funny, and the way they let each other see their real selves had me melting!!! There was even a touch of found family (my absolute favorite) with the boyband members and Mrs. N.

Okay so the spice level here is VERY high. This might be the spiciest book I've ever read. But also I'm very new to spice so this might not actually be so spicy to someone else but for me it was a 5/5 on the spiceometer! But it was fun and cute spice and fit along with the story so well! The writing is super smooth and easy to get into and I looooved all the little British-isms sprinkled in! I had to keep looking things up but I truly love learning new words! Annnnnd as a HUGE Dancing with the Stars fan, the dancing competition backdrop added an extra layer of wonderfulness that made me so happy!

Nothing dragged, nothing felt rushed and every time I put it down to go do something else, I was left in the BEST mood. It's one of those books that fills your heart with soooo much joy! The kind where you're rooting for the characters from the very first chapter and smiling the whole way through! Toby and Nico are definitely going to be in my brain for a long time and I already can't wait to read more by Charlie Novak!

Es una historia corta y muy bonita.

No es el slow burn al que estoy acostumbrada, y por eso al principio me costó un poco conectar con ellos. Pero una vez que los fui conociendo, les agarré un cariño inmenso. Toby y Nico me encantaron muchísimo, especialmente Toby.

¿Qué me faltó? Leer más de Toby con su ex banda. Entiendo que ya no están juntos, pero habría sido genial tener más escenas entre ellos. Todos trataban a Toby con tanto cariño que me quedé con ganas de ver más de esa dinámica.

I was blessed to read an Advanced Reader Copy of Love at Frost Sight. All opinions are my own and freely given.

When Toby Darling, former star of Underground Dreaming and secret songwriter, gets selected to be on the Christmas special of Come Dancing With Me, he is over the moon to be paired with Nico Hamilton. Not only is Nico one of the best competitive dancers, but he's easy on the eyes, too. But winning Nico over is easier said than done. Nico is all serious and professional, so Toby makes it his personal mission to make him smile. Thank God Nico likes biscuits, or it would have been a lot harder! While Toby and Nico become closer as they prepare for the taping of their show, the sexual tension building between them becomes undeniable. Contestants dating each other isn't specifically against the rules, but it isn't encouraged either. So keeping it secret is a must, but neither Toby nor Nico is ready to see it end after the show. Christmas is just around the corner, and all Toby wants is Nico. He just hopes Nico feels the same.

This was such a cute holiday read. I loved Nico and how professional he was. He really guided Toby through the show and was definitely learning about whar his boundaries in the industry were. I loved that he was won over by all the sweets and that he just couldn't resist Toby's easygoing attitude. I loved that them falling in love was easy and sweet. I also really liked Toby. He really was a ray of sunshine, always happy and smiling. I love that he brought out the same in Nico. I really loved that Toby was very shy and down to earth. He was a really great character who just wanted to have fun and be himself.

I really loved how Toby and Nico fell in love. It was very sweet and low-angst. I loved the dancing scenes and that they just kept getting closer and closer as they worked together. The competition was a fun setting, and I enjoyed tha part a lot.

If I had a criticism it would be two things. First, some of the dialogue was a teensy bit cheesy, but that's okay. It wasn't that bad. The other thing, though, is I almost wish this had had less spice in it. I felt like it just didn't quite fit the tone of the book. I did enjoy it, but I think if it had been a little more subtle it would have been better. This is the first book I have read by this author, though, so maybe I just wasn't sure what to expect.

Overall I did really enjoy this book. It was low-angst and fun. There were funny parts and sexy parts and exciting parts. It was a cute holiday read, and I was glad to see Toby and Nico find their Happily Ever After. Overall I give this one a solid 4/5 🌟

DNF @ 45%

Lmao, hiding Toby's queerness while he actively dances with a male partner in what was basically "Dancing With The Stars" was hardly believable. Everyone and their mother knows that the only same sex couples that dance on there are queer (otherwise they'd have gone with the normal opposite sex pairing) so even if there was justification, it wasnt feasible to think that Toby was straight from the public's perspective.

Idk what was up Nico's ass for him to have been rude to Toby at their first meeting, but the fact that it disappeared their second practice w/o any real change was weird.

I didn't like the expo dump we had for Toby and his ex-band mates. Felt a bit forced and was boring to have dedicated an entire chapter to just shotgunning all his friends + their history.

Nico being shocked at how Toby acted when the camera was involved was dumb. You're telling me a dude who's worked with countless celebs is caught off guard by the idea that people can change when they're being filmed? That's not even a super celebrity specific thing, that's common knowledge. People tend to spruce up when attention is involved, why did Nico have to debrief with his friend about that?

I DNFED when I realized I'd been skimming. The general lack of stakes + conflict really just meant that this was a super fluffy nothing sandwich with some neutral to negative story beats/choices. 1.5 stars rounded up.

Love At Frost Sight is a charming holiday romance featuring former boy band member Toby Darling and rebellious professional dancer Nico.

Who are paired together for the Christmas special of a highly popular dance competition show (think Strictly Come Dancing). And Toby is thrilled about this, but Nico, having had a nightmare partner on the regular show, is fed up with the celebrity scene.

So, it’s fair to say he's a bit of a grump when he first meets Toby. However, Toby’s sweet nature and sweet treats courtesy of his housekeeper, Mrs N, quickly win Nico over, and he realises that Toby is nothing like he had imagined. A close friendship soon develops, which quickly turns into something more after a spicy moment during rehearsals.

But Nico knows the show has a reputation to consider, and neither of them wants to add to it—especially since Toby's celebrity status is already sky-high. That’s how he was cast at such short notice.

Yet, despite this, the chemistry between Nico and Toby is undeniable, and they seem ideally suited for each other—curse or no curse.

And with no angst and just the right amount of holiday cheer, romance, and spice, this is a truly delightful and entertaining holiday story. That I would happily recommend to everyone.

My thanks to The Author Agency . All thoughts expressed are my own. 😊

This book was festive and sweet. I loved the idea of the dance competition and imagining every step, I loved everything about Toby being part of a former boy band. The romance was so cute, seeing how they fall in love as they interact. These two were adorable, and I really loved that there was no unnecessary drama! Without a doubt, a perfect book for this Christmas season!

This is a wonderfully sweet and fluffy holiday read in Charlie’s low angst style. It has that perfect seasonal charm with a dance competition setting and a grumpy-meets-sunshine meet cute.

Toby Darling is an ex-popstar who signs up for the Christmas Special for TV dance show, Come Dancing With Me, hoping to breathe new life into his career. He gets paired with Nico, the show's notoriously frosty and demanding "bad boy of ballroom." Nico thinks Toby is going to be a diva, and Toby is just trying to defrost his partner's icy attitude—often with homemade biscuit bribery! 🍪

The magic of this book is watching the Nico’s icy heart melt. As they spend countless hours in the training room together, the initial frost gives way to heat. Nico starts to see the real Toby behind the fame and realizes the sweet man he’s getting to know is the real deal. Toby finds someone who challenges him on and off the dance floor.

If you love stories with great banter, plenty of sequins, and dance studio shenanigans you will adore Toby and Nico's journey to their happily ever after.

My mom is obsessed with Dancing with the Stars and talks about it constantly, so I had some idea about what to expect from Nico and Toby's foray into celebrity dancing competitions, but Charlie Novak brought the behind the scenes nuance to life! I appreciated the attention to detail and the way their relationship grew both inside and outside their practices...

This book merged slow burn with unwrapping the layers of each man's personality and really brought home the tension and the attraction. I also truly loved the side characters and the cookie storyline!

This was such an exciting, promising premise but it was sadly poorly executed. :(

There is like zero buildup or chemistry between the MCs. Like very little flirting then they hang out once outside the studio and THEN they get all lusty for each other.. When meanwhile leading up to this they’re literally dancing together and in each other’s bubbles, like the PERFECT set up for tension or SOMETHING.. and there’s just nothing.

It’s also mentioned a few times in the second half that Nico was really “frosty” when they first met.. where? Where was this? He’s pissy with the producers and a little internally, dreading Toby being a diva for like a page but is never really “frosty” or grumpy towards Toby.

Speaking of Toby his personality is really….. confusing.. Like his dialogue is very stilted. He comes off as nice but also is giving off like child star with stunted emotional/maturity growth.. but he apparently wasn’t famous until he was 18.. sooo Idk if this was intentional?

Nico has a bit more of a personality (you can tell he’s a “bad boy” because he swears a lot lol.)

Anyways what a bummer.

A perfectly sweet & spicy holiday romance!

*I received an arc copy of this book, all opinions are my own*

Somehow this was the second book in a row that I read where one MC was named Toby, like what are the chances?!

But that aside, I just love how unabashedly lovely Charlie Novak’s holiday books are. We get sparks & instant connection, combined with a slow-ish burn (I mean they are usually on the shorter page length side so the burn can’t be too slow!), that then becomes two characters immediately saying “yep this is it for us” and I eat it up every single time!

I don’t want any wishy-washy feelings in my holiday romances, I just want pure unadulterated “I’ve found my person” vibes and this has that in spades.

I really hope the remaining members of the band get their book(s) too!

This was fun, up until the last few chapters when the mushiness hit swamp level, and there was too much repeating and layering on of Feelings. But also, a lot of important figuring-out went on off-page, apparently in favor of the mush word count, which...is a choice. I wish I had liked the end as much as most of the novel, but oh well, still glad I read it.

Dislike the cartoon cover. This fad can't end soon enough.

Charlie Novak is romance royalty! Toby and Nico's holiday story is as delicious as every holiday treat they consume (spoiler, it's a lot 😉). Toby is a former pop star who needs something fulfilling and fun in his life. Why not enter a TV dance contest? Enter the grumpy Nico, who is tasked with turning Toby into a dancer. These two have a sweet (and spicy) connection that warms readers up from head to toe. This is a low angst connection that gets better with every page. As always, Charlie gives readers wonderful queer representation and emotional growth. This is a perfect holiday story with a found family of fantastic characters.

Although Nico was a bit grumpy when they first met Toby’s positive attitude and baked treats win him over. Their dynamic was fun and I enjoyed watching them come together.

Ice & Sweet was the first Charlie Novak book I ever read and as well as my introduction to this holiday collection and I have had such a great time with each book. I love the friend groups and found family. This was fun and I’m glad a picked it up!

Love at Frost Sight is an absolute delight! It's a warm, sparkly, feel-good Christmas read that left me smiling from start to finish. The premise is fantastic: an ex–boyband popstar, restless and searching for something new, signs up for the Christmas Special of Come Dancing With Me (definitely not Strictly!). He’s paired with the show’s resident bad boy, and from the moment they meet, the chemistry is irresistible.

The story is both funny and wonderfully sweet. Toby and Nico’s relationship stands out for its maturity, honesty, and genuinely great communication. Their connection feels real and heartfelt, making it easy to root for them from the very beginning. Charlie Novak captures the warmth, joy, and festive magic of Christmas perfectly in this cosy, charming romance.

If you’re looking for a low-angst, sparkly holiday read packed with heart, humour, and all the feels, this one is an easy recommendation. ❤️

Since Toby's band retired, he's been a bit adrift. The next thing for him was the Come Dancing With Me Christmas special, after he convinced his agent to help him get him on the show. Now it's get on the show and convince his professional dance partner that he's not the diva he had prejudged him to be. Then it's to convince Nico that they're meant to be much more than just dance partners.

Nico has serious reservations about his new partner, Toby. He's expecting a diva considering the man looks like a model and is a former boy bander, used to living his life in the public eye, not dancing on a reality show. So imagine his surprise when Toby ends up being an absolute sweetheart who brings cookies made by his housekeeper to all their rehearsals, and has an obvious mask up when the camera comes around. Toby's the last person he ever thought he'd want to be with, but there's something irresistible about him. Now Nico's falling hard, and hoping he can show Toby just how good they can be together.

Toby and Nico are absolutely adorable together. They're low key, low drama, but smoldering hot this holiday season. I love how Nico saw through Toby's mask and through to the loneliness he hid from the world, and fell in love with the sweet, lovely person he truly was. And I love that Toby saw Nico's true self, too, not really a bad boy but a good man who with a frosty exterior, one he was only too happy to melt with cookies and by being his charming self. I've been reading a lot of holiday books this season - I think this is possibly the sweetest, though, with a heartfelt, sweet couple whose chemistry practically lit up my Kindle.

Love At Frost Sight by @charlienwrites
5 ⭐ / 3🔥🌶

It’s been a hot minute since I’ve read a @charlienwrites story and goodness gracious did I forget how spicy and amazing her writing is. Nico and Toby are the perfect pair! They both understand the limelight, they both understand privacy. They both have show personas that they don’t realize they put up in certain positions. But when they’re together, all those walls come down and the vulnerability and truth they find around each other makes for one steamy, emotional and beautifaul Holiday Story!

From start to finish you are enamored with this duo. Nico is a professional dancer, Toby is a retired boy band star who now secretly writes songs under a pen name. When Toby needs something more he convinces his agent to book him on the dancing reality show. Toby is not out yet, but Nico has done the show with both male and female partners… and Toby can only hope he gets to meet Nico let alone be paired with him. They are electric. They are on fire. They are #relationshipgoals. It may start off as a slowburn… but once these two let the facades drop and their lust and interest grow, its dynanimite.

They see the real them when together!

I love @charlienwrites Rugby inspired series, and her previous two Holiday Novellas, but this. I don’t know this one is the star of the show! Legit could not put it down and read it start to finish in less than 24 hours.

Add Love at Frost Sight to your TBR today. You will not be disappointed.

Thank you @charlienwrites and @theauthor.agency for my ARC.

Rating: Loved It

Charlie hooked me into this universe last year with Ice & Sweet, and I practically squealed when I learned another one of the boy banders was getting his HEA.

Inside this book you'll find...
🎄 MM Christmas Romance
❄️ Ex-Popstar x Bad Boy Dancer
🎄 Golden Retriever x Black Cat vibes
❄️ Reality Dance Show - At Christmas!
🎄 Forced Proximity
❄️ Training Room Mirror Spice
🎄 All. The. Sequins!
❄️ "I See Who You Really Are"
🎄 Hooking Up For Stress Release

Nico and Toby were almost as sweet as the biscuits Toby kept feeding him. They were thrown together for such an intense stretch of time that the instalove didn’t feel rushed at all, it felt earned, like they’d lived a whole lifetime in those moments.

I adored how Nico truly saw Toby. Saw past the mask, past the persona. He recognized the silly golden retriever beneath the shine and never pushed, never made Toby feel like he needed to be anything other than himself. He quietly adjusted, made space, and offered comfort before Toby even realized he needed it. And Nico’s family? Absolute chaos in the best way. I’d spend Christmas with them in a heartbeat.

Toby, meanwhile, is navigating life after stardom, even though his every move is still being watched. After living so publicly for so long, he’s trying to figure out how to step back, how much of himself he still owes the world, and when he can finally be his authentic self.

Watching them compete on a Dancing with the Stars–style show was both wholesome and scorching. The spice was spicing, and the tender moments were extra sweet.

Thank you, Charlie, for another amazing installment in this world. I truly hope this becomes a yearly tradition because we still need the rest of the band’s stories.

And another huge thank you to @charlienwrites and @theauthor.agency for the ARC.

I haven't read very many Charlie Novak books but the ones I have read I've enjoyed, I can add this one to that list as well. I've never read a book quite like this one before.

I've read about MC's having a dancing profession before but it's usually ballet, I haven't read one about one quite like Nico before. I want to applaud Charlie for describing all the intricacies of Nico and Toby dancing as well as the process behind them getting filmed for the TV show. I love when an author provides intricate details and describe things in a realistic way, and Charlie definitely achieved that. It felt as though I was pulled into this book with how detailed the writing was.

The MC's themselves were absolutely dynamite! Toby and Nico started off a bit rocky but with time, and cookies, they grew closer during their time together. I liked the slow burn that occured between them, I thought their relationship developed naturally and didn't feel forced or rush. Even though these characters have only known each other for a month, it doesn't feel rushed, or short. It just feels right, which is impressive that Charlie was able to convey such emotion and a deep intensity between their MC's in a shorter time frame.

I really enjoyed reading this book, I loved all the details even though I have no idea how to dance, my favorite part though was them bonding over cookies, that sounds perfect to me! All in all, a truly fantastic book!

~~I received an early copy of this book and these are my honest thoughts and opinions.~~

Nico and Toby

I had blast while reading this book. This story is sweet, simple and without any unnecessary drama. Charlie has done a fantastic job at making this story Christmassy. Toby is a sweetheart and a ray of freaking sunshine. He is a hardworking, kind, caring, and very private ex-popstar with a funny and sassy personality. Nico on the other hand is a little grumpy and is like an onion. Once you peel away his layers, you discover a sweet, caring, and talented dancer with a sweet tooth. In the beginning Nico assumes that Toby will be diva with a giant ego. But once they start spending time together for rehearsals for their reality dance show, Nico gets to know the real Toby. Toby is a darling to bring holiday themed cookies for Nico. It’s nice to read how Nico treats Toby with respect and just like a normal person. Under all that fame, Toby is lonely as he can never trust anyone but Nico is able to gain his trust and gives Toby a safe space to just be himself. They are such a sweet couple who encourages each other and communicates well. They absolutely deserve to be together as they complement one another perfectly. With that being said, if you want to add a sweet Christmas romance to your TBR List, consider this book.

Solid 4 1/2 stars!

I love Dancing With the Stars. I've watched every season (except for the Tyra era). I knew that it started with Strictly Come Dancing so when I read this blurb I knew I would love it.

Toby Darling, great name, former boy band star, current song writer, but BORED. So he asks his agent to get him on "Come Dancing With Me", an obvious homage to Strictly Come Dancing. But as his agent says, he has nothing to promote, so why? People will think he's desperate. Toby doesn't care.

Paired up now with professional Nico, who just came off of 6 weeks with a super conservative partner and is cranky. But slowly, Toby shows him that he means business.

Toby is just a nice guy. I don't think he could be mean if he tried. It's just in his nature. Kind of sad that he doesn't have a close relationship with family, but even more impressive about his sunny disposition. Nico finally starts to relax when he realized that this really is Toby.

Getting closer and closer during rehearsals is inevitable. Add in Christmas approaching, a show coming soon and some snow...it's like a perfect way to bring some holiday cheer. I loved that there was no third act break up, fight or tension for no reason. I want my Christmas books happy. And this one totally was.

Some fun cameos as well for those who follow the author.

This was the definition of a cozy, feel-good holiday romance with just enough spice to keep things warm. Set against a festive backdrop, the story pairs a lonely former pop star trying to rediscover himself after fame with a grumpy, bad-boy professional dancer who is a bit cold and standoffish. Their dynamic starts off frosty, but watching Nico slowly soften for Toby, and Toby finally feel seen, was incredibly satisfying.

What really worked for me was how naturally their connection unfolded. The relationship builds through shared time, quiet moments, and plenty of close proximity, allowing the emotional payoff to feel genuine and deeply rewarding. The chemistry leans more tender than explosive, but the heat is still there when it counts. I also loved the found-family energy woven throughout… those side characters brought so much heart and charm to the story.

The holiday setting adds a lovely layer without overpowering the romance, and it made the entire reading experience feel comforting and seasonal, like a soft blanket and a plate of cookies on a cold night.

Overall, this was a sweet, low-angst, festive MM romance with great chemistry, lovable supporting characters, and a warm emotional core. A perfect pick if you’re craving something comforting with a little sparkle and steam. ✨💙❄️

Charlie Novak does it again with another sweet low angst MM romance but this time we get dancing and holidays and some old friends too! Love at Frost Sight was an absolutely lovely read just as I expected it would be. Toby is adorable, you just want to give him a hug and all the soft comfy things while baking him cookies! Nico is a little more prickly and closed off at first but even he can’t resist Toby’s charm and he quickly starts having some very different thoughts about his new dance partner. It was fun seeing his initial thoughts about how he expected Toby to be like especially after reading Toby’s POV first. His skepticism was very quickly dissolved by Toby’s sweetness though and Toby’s excitement had me very invested in both the dance competition and their relationship. I really like how Toby found someone who he can be himself with and they love him for it. I was a big fan of how Toby and Nico’s relationship happened and how there wasn’t much time for either of them to hesitate and panic because they figured out they wanted to be together and they did. This book was also very festive and all the mentions of biscuits and comfy jumpers had me wanting to cuddle up with snacks! If you’re looking for something to warm you up and get you in the festive mood this is a great quick read to pick up and I bet you‘ll fall in love with them just as quickly as I did!
