Facing Nightfall: The Sunrise Saga by Michael B Chikondi is his first novel and I am glad that he brought it into the light. This dark, gothic, eerie novel can be described as a coming of age novel for Abbey Sharp. I love that she climbs out her window and has a hideaway on the roof where she observes her surroundings while smoking cigarettes.

Abbey and her friend, Lewis, wander the streets at night fighting against the darkness that calls to them. They will face more than the supernatural. They will question their life, their loyalty will be tested and it will take a lot of strength to resist the evil taking over the town.

MIchael B Chikondi blends the supernatural with humanity, making the characters question their choices. I found Facing Nightfall to be an original take on a familiar tale and I do love my vampires, so getting lost in Abbey’s story was exciting, making it hard to stop reading. It’s 419 pages of deliciousness.

I have read numerous novels by Michael B Chikondi, but this is my favorite.

Book Review

*Facing Nightfall* is an eerie, immersive, and beautifully dark tale that pulls readers straight into the heart of a town where normal life is only a thin mask over something ancient and hungry. Michael B. Chikondi creates a world that feels both intimate and apocalyptic, using gothic atmosphere and emotional depth to craft a vampire story that stands out from the crowd.

The novel follows Abbey Sharp, an ordinary girl whose late-night escapes and quiet frustrations are suddenly overshadowed by the terrifying unraveling of Masham. When people start disappearing, strange transmissions echo through the night, and creatures of legend crawl out from the shadows, Abbey’s life shifts from muted routine to a desperate fight for survival. Alongside her friend Lewis, she is forced to confront the horrifying truth: the town has been overtaken by vampires.

What makes *Facing Nightfall* gripping is how it blends supernatural fear with very human questions—identity, loyalty, and the cost of power. Abbey’s internal struggle is just as gripping as the external threat. As the lines between friend and foe blur, and even family becomes uncertain, her journey becomes one of self-preservation, self-discovery, and sacrifice. Chikondi doesn’t rely solely on fright; he builds emotional stakes that make every choice feel weighty.

The writing is rich with gothic ambiance—fog-soaked streets, eerie quiet, and a town slowly being swallowed by darkness. Yet beneath the horror lies a coming-of-age narrative that feels grounded and honest. Abbey’s vulnerability, courage, and moments of doubt make her a protagonist readers can root for, even as the world around her teeters on the edge of ruin.

*Facing Nightfall* is not just a vampire novel—it’s a haunting exploration of fear, resilience, and the fragile boundaries of humanity. Chikondi delivers a story where the night is relentless, trust is a gamble, and every glimmer of hope feels hard-earned. Atmospheric, suspenseful, and emotionally layered, this book is a treat for fans of dark fantasy and modern gothic fiction.
