When she isn’t writing, Emma loves spending her time with her own prince charming and two beautiful children, all the while enjoying the famous Californian sun and ocean.

I thoroughly enjoyed this story. The characters were a great mixture of family, love and responsibility. The story of their developing love is sweet, filled with complications.
A heart breaking story of how the past can destroy the hope for a happy future. Thomas never dreamed of being a Duke, raised as a commoner in Scotland, father died when he is only thirteen, he went to work, his sister wed to help and his mother died a year later. Hester raised in society but now grown and see the pain her mother is at the passing of her father. Her minds is in so much grief that she believes her husband still lives. Hester will never love like that, but needs to marry to relive her mother’s mind, so when Thomas proposed, she agrees but only if he agrees to be in name only. He agrees because he needs help in intergrating into society, and this beings problems!
I have really gotten into the historical novels this month. Emma Linfield does them very well. When a (nearly) spinster, which in those days you reached by being 23 and unmarried, bumps into (literally) a wall of Scottish duke, it seems like a crazy thing to accept his marriage proposal without a courtship or even knowing his past. But what started out as a business deal, he needed a "society" English wife and she needed a husband and solid future, turned into the romance (albeit, after they were married) of the century. Again, I must warn you, do not start this book late at night, or the sun will come up as you finish. It would make a great companion for this cold stormy weekend ahead.
I enjoyed this clean, well-written story. Scottish Duke Thomas needed an English wife. He met Hester and realised she was different from the other ladies. He proposed and they married quickly. The story follows how their marriage develops. There is a lot of uncertainty but it is clear that Thomas is a gentle man, despite his size. Will Hester realise she has stolen his heart and find a way to have a family life together? I liked Thomas' calm manner and his practical approach. I thought Hester's embroidery work for the orphanage was a lovely idea. A good, gentle story.
Enjoyed both of the main characters. Thomas, who had worked hard most of his life, became a Duke when he was the only one left in the line. Felt he’d failed his family, convinced he didn’t deserve love. He meets a Lady, who has no options left but spinsterhood and offers marriage. A marriage of convenience to establish him into society , 2 months then she can do what she wants, she agrees because she afraid if she falls in love, she could end up like her mother if he died, lost in grief forever. But, the do fall in love, and both have to get past their fears or be miserable. So is love worth the risk?
This is a great story, I enjoyed the way Hester and Thomas grew in their relationship and provided what each one needed. Hester had a grace and kindness that Thomas needed but didn’t feel her deserved. Thomas had strength and a desire to protect that Hester needed after her father died and her Mother faced depression and dementia. They both agreed to a marriage of convenience but both couldn’t help the feelings that began to develop the longer they spent together.
Hester thought she was doing the right thing by marrying Thomas. He needed a wife. Neither one planned to fall in love with each other. Thomas is so good to her. She is good with the children, which makes her start to think of what it would be like to have her own. They are both stubborn in trying to keep the rules they set up and not admitting what was in their hearts. What a wonderful story. The extended epilogue is a nice closing. Ms Linfield has done it again.
This was a spectacular read! The characters were well developed and realistic, very believable. The plot was intriguing and flowed well. It was cleanly written, which was the best!
My main complaint is the epilogue and prologue links are broken. I do not know what foolishness Cobslt Fairy has pulled, but they need to fix this.
Emma Linfield is a true Master. Her characters have life, they are easy to see and feel. Her story’s always hold my interest, with just enough humor, and an abundance of warmth and resonance. I love Emma Linfield. She is one of my absolute favorites💕!
The Duke, Thomas, saves Hester from a ghastly night at A ball only to be grateful as she’s different. When a ward comes along it brings strong feelings & then another. Now a new set of circumstances are set in place & neither one is happy; but only good will come from it. We hope !
This is a nice story with a HEA. Unusual start with a rambling story line. It’s a “clean” love story with likable characters. I wish the heroine had more courage and would have stood up for her husband. He was a strong character who did not receive much support from his wife. That’s why I only gave it 3 stars.
Lady Hester is confused. She doesn't want to marry for love. She's not even sure she wants to marry at all. She does want to bring her very sad mother joy, though, so when she gets a surprise, marriage proposal from the handsome, new Scottish Duke, she accepts! If you like sweet romance, a headstrong couple, and innocent children, this is the book for you.
Thomas came from a poor childhood to become a Duke. He did not think he really deserved it, but his Duchess helped him to discover all he could be. A delightful story with likable characters.
Hester has very mixed emotions about marrying Thomas as she sees how her mother has been since being widowed. Between the two of the. They overcome all the misunderstandings and hurdles to find their hea
Two people think they don’t deserve to be happy with each other. They run in the wrong directions. Friends of each step in to save them. Lots of great action and interests that appeal. A nice and calm read.
