Tethered Angel, by T.M. Brown, is a captivatingly beautiful story, one that captures the reader like a gentle wind and takes them on a journey which must be seen to its end.
Set in the 1950’s and the burgeoning sixties, Tethered Angel follows Angel, the center of this story, an African-American teenage girl who is struggling to find her identity in a culture which is quickly changing, during an era of racism against blacks and the growing equal-rights movement under the leadership of Martin Luther King. Angel finds herself drawn away from her impoverished lifestyle by the taunts and serpentine appeals offered to her by a rich white woman. The woman convinces Angel, more by force than by reason, to travel with her to Europe, to see the world, leaving her mother behind with just a note. The story which ensues embraces the world of a young black girl at a time when racism is still pungent and violent, where people like her are treated as second-rate human beings, and where she learns to discover her strengths. Throughout the story, Angel converses with those she has lost, the dead, but her visitations from the lost and gone are more like guiding spirits, helping her through difficult times. As she grows and as her independent mind sees another road leading away from a world of bigotry and hate, Angel decides she must make it back to her mother, even years later, in spite of her new state of slavery to the rich white woman. The question is how? This is a story about courage, values, belief in oneself, and the persistence often necessary in life to climb one’s mountain. A very good read.

What a unique and intriguing read! In this continuation of Georgie's and Angel's story, TM Brown has penned one of the most creative stories I've ever read. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Can't wait to see what the future holds for this author.

I’ve enjoyed reading Tina Brown’s books, and this sequel to Struggle of the Women Folk did not disappoint. Brown creates a beautiful original story that’s told with such compassion and gentleness that I was drawn to her young character, Angel. As a journeyed with Angel through her travels with the malicious Mrs. Barker, I was drawn into Angel’s world and her psyche. My heart ached when Mrs. Barker, a troubled-soul, kidnapped Angel and forced Ricky to be her love slave, as they journeyed from one place to the next. So desperate Mrs. Barker was to have a family of her own that she nearly ruins the life of poor Angel, who was manipulated by. With the help of a new friend Gretchen, Angel just may escape the crippling hands of Mrs. Barker who soon meets her Maker, in a way that will shock readers!

This sequel to Struggles of the Women Folk takes us further into the life of Angel as she travels to Europe with Miss Emily Barker. She was attracted to the material riches of her mother's boss, but soon starts to learn about the depth or lack of one's character. She sees deeper into the devious plots of Miss Barker and Ricky, her mother’s husband. She also has her first encounters as a budding woman. Her mother grieves for her and her runaway husband back in Virginia. We wonder whether Angel will survive while in Italy and Germany. Will there be guardian angels to help reunite her with her mother, Georgie? Will Gretchen, a German nanny be of help or hindrance? Will her father Donnie show up to help her escape? Will she ever see the handsome officer Deco again? Pack your bags and take this adventurous journey as Angel meanders through her rites of passage.

Historical fiction is one of my favourite genres and was thrilled when I won this book in the Goodreads First Reads Giveaway. I shall be looking forward to reading more books by this author in the near future.

And the saga continues here with Georgie’s daughter Angel. I loved The Struggles of Women Folk and was so glad to see a sequel. You can’t but feel for poor Angel as her mother’s evil employer, Miss Emily Barker, manipulates her. Angel leaves with Miss Barker to travel to Europe under false pretenses. She soon finds out she has been trapped and held against her will. She yearns for her mother and will draw on all her strength to escape a world she never wanted to be a part of. Angel has a rare gift as an intuitive. She touches the lives of many who she meets while in Europe. This will get her through all the tragedies that she’ll encounter. And there are many. I cried, as this young girl must struggle to escape the world of Miss Barker and her plans for Angel. Author T.M. Brown will have you pulled in deep all throughout the story as you are hoping this poor child will get back to her mama.

My Thoughts....
A very touching story...of Angel young black girl in the 50's who was the daughter of 'Georgie and Donnie' that endured quite a bit from the hands of Miss Emily Baker. I will say that lady definitely made Angel's abduction so very captivating giving the read a very interesting read. As Angel is drawn into Miss Emily manipulation, craziness and strangeness and let's not leave out that hold she had on Ricky. Will Angel make it back to her mom Georgie before it is too late? In the end I liked how this author brings it all together and I will stop here and say to get the whole story the reader will have to pick up this well written read with a good storyline to see what all happens in the end.

I loved T.M.Brown's first book, Struggles of the Women Folk. I could remember lots of it's vivid details. I loved Tethered Angel even more. It was the missing half of Struggles of the Women Folk though each can stand alone. The strangeness of her Angel's abductor makes her all the more captivating. You want to know what happened to her to make her who she was. Learning what Angel went through answered all the questions of the first book.

This is the story told by Angel, Georgia's daughter. Angel voluntarily accompanies Miss Barker as she thinks she wants pretty dresses and to travel. Angel believes her mother, Georgia, is smothering her and holding her back from life. Angel soon figures out she is trapped with a hateful woman. When Georgia's new husband comes and joins Angel and Miss Barker, Angel really figures out she is in trouble. Touching and well written, we journey with Angel as she tries to get home.

The ending I hoped for
I immediately read this after reading 'Struggles of the Women Folk'. 'Struggles' was the mother's story while 'Tethered' is the daighter's story. I loved that Ms Brown used this style to tell this story. Angel was gifted with the ability to hear from dead loved ones. I saw this as a covering over her, protection. Because she was such a precocious girl, she needed that protection because of her desires to get out if poverty and see the world. She got her chance, and the saying goes, 'be careful what you wish for' or as I learned after being saved, 'be specific in your requests to God'. Angel became of age living abroad and learned that her mother's love was what she really needed instead. Please read 'Struggles' first to fully enjoy this book. I highly recommend it, you won't be disappointed.
