After losing her husband and mother within a span of two years, Verity C. Huntington, a #1 international best-selling romance author, trying to figure out life as a single mother has now been tasked to be her best friend’s Maid of Honor and the wedding will be held in none other than the small town she swore she would never return to and has stayed away from for the last 13 years- Adelaide, Texas.
On a whim, Verity decides to pack up her kids, flip the home and the barn, sell them- and her memories of Adelaide- for good. But her plans hit a snag when Dean Carson- her first love and now Adelaide’s sheriff- reenters her life, determined to have her fall in love with him once more.
But he’s not the only thing making her heart race.
The longer she stays in her mother’s house, things begin to go bump in the night, shadows crawl, dark secrets resurface, and stranger things are playing tricks. With her heart and her sanity on the line, she must confront the dark truths hidden in Adelaide’s shadows. Can she escape unscathed once again, or is something far more sinister lurking in a quiet Texas town?
*Secrets That Bind Us is a Sexually graphic, standalone, Erotic thriller not to be consumed by anyone under the age of legal adulthood.*
Ruby Darling is a small town Texas Native that reads too much Dark Fantasy Romance and sleeps too little, which has probably caused her to be delusional enough to create a world of her own. She hopes you have a great time under the glamour and in the veil.
I loved this story, five stars everywhere! Dean and Verity were absolutely made for each other, true soulmates. When they find their way back into each other’s lives, they don’t hold back, they dive in completely. The way Dean shows Verity with his actions that he loves her and she belongs with him, truly had me giddy and kicking my little feet! Dean is definitely my new book boyfriend, THIS MAN! 😮💨🫠 Their connection is explosive. The SPICE WAS SPICING RUBY 🔥🔥🫠🫠 and I COULD NOT GET ENOUGH! 😮💨 This book had it all, spice, swoon worthy moments, plot twists, all of the emotional feels, and a spooky vibe that I was not expecting but totally LOVED! Congratulations Ruby, you have done it again and I cannot wait to listen to this audiobook. 🌻
Did I hear the theme song for American Horror Story the entire time I was reading this book? Maybe. Did I find myself extra jumpy and leaving lights on longer? ABSOLUTELY. Did it slow me down on absolutely devouring this masterpiece? NEVERRRRR.
Verity leaves her small town and her first love, Dean Carson, behind. After she’s made it big as an author, the loss of her mother sends her reeling and straight back into the clutches of not only the town she left behind- but the boy she ran away from. Dean never truly moved on from Verity and once he realizes he has a chance to have her again- he’ll stop at nothing to make her his again. As secrets are revealed and nothing is as it seems these two will have to not only face their feelings for each other- but the dangers that go bump in the night in order to find their happy ending.
This book was such a wild ride and I literally could not put it down. Dean and Verity were truly end game and their journey back to each other was such an exhilarating and excruciating one I could not get enough. Pair that with the paranormal and shocking revelations that just kept coming throughout this love story and this is unlike anything you have ever read. Ruby’s mind is a dark, twisty, smutty little place and I never want to leave it.
Another absolute banger by my girl Ruby and I couldn’t be more proud to read her work in every stage. Happy release day, my love!!! 🌻🖤
Get ready to meet your next book boyfriend .. just saying ..
Ruby Darling has delivered a captivating, emotionally layered novel with Secrets That Bind Us, a haunting blend of second-chance romance, small-town secrets, and slow-burning suspense that unfolds across a dual timeline. This book grabbed me from page one and held on tight!!!
At the center of the story are Dean and Verity, childhood sweethearts whose lives were ripped apart by trauma and silence, but whose bond refuses to break. Verity, now a single mother, has carved out a successful but guarded life. Dean, rugged and emotionally complex, is what Verity refers to as her “dark angel” masculine and brooding, with a quiet storm of devotion that’s aimed at only one person: her.
“Staring down at me is the dark angel God sent to torture my heart, body, mind and soul. But only torture it enough to be able to put it back together. How he weaves every bit of my being to fit into his is fascinating”
Their chemistry crackles off the page, laced with both longing and pain. The emotional stakes are high, and the love between them feels both impossible and inevitable. Two quotes that perfectly capture that ache:
“I am destined to fall for you over and over again.” “I used to think Verity Huntington was made for me, but the truth is, I was made for her.”
What sets this story apart isn’t just the romance, it’s the way Darling masterfully weaves in elements of thriller and mystery, revealing buried truths at just the right pace. The dual timeline structure deepens the emotional impact, allowing readers to fully experience the echoes of the past and how they ripple into the present.
The themes of forgiveness, trauma, and identity are handled with nuance, and the writing itself is evocative, lyrical without being overly sentimental. There’s a maturity and emotional depth here that makes the characters feel real and their pain earned. Not to mention, Darling paints the most vivid pictures and her descriptions are some of my favorites I’ve read. The woman also knows how to write spice 🥵🌶️🌶️🌶️
If you're a fan of emotional thrillers with second-chance love, small-town tension, and deeply scarred but unforgettable characters ( not to mention a hot as fuuuuuuuuck MMC), Secrets That Bind Us is one to put at the top of your list.
Thank you to Ruby Darling for the opportunity to read an early copy. I can’t wait to see how readers respond to this one and what you’ll write next!!
“I love this story and the eerie feeling of it as I was listening it. Ruby is an amazing writer and this prove her range !! This my first time listening to Caden Hart but it def won’t be my last. Andie did amazing voicing Verity. Who I love and could relate to. This story is full of secrets and suspense with romance woven into it perfectly! Noah also stole the show ! I love him”
This was an emotional second chance at love between a smalltown sheriff and a single mom. It was everything. Epic love confessions, trauma, growth, healing, twists and turns I absolutely did not see coming. Dean is absolutely a must have book boyfriend. Loved this one so much!
She’s done it again! Ruby M, darling — signed, sealed, and delivered with this one!!!
I saw the narrators for this and said, sign me the F up! Dark/twisted + thriller + second chance + romance equals one heck of a story!
Just when you think you’ve got things figured out… no, no you don’t. You start to think, “Maybe this is ghost-themed amongst other things?” Yeah… you know. Nothing, but in the best possible way. This story left me feeling like I wanted to jump into the book & shout, “Just run already!” But I couldn’t lol.
One thing about Ruby’s writing — she pulls you in right away. It’s like she’s feeding us candy at times lol. The story picked up immediately, giving you a glimpse of events while keeping you on your toes and rooting for both the FMC and the MMC. I love them both equally.
It delivers in the areas of suspense, thriller vibes, lots of mystery with a touch of creepy vibes, dark romance, found family, and second-chance romance. Spice — lots & lots of spice — plus more! Honestly, the list is huge with this one. It’s worth listening to this even if you only read it; you’ll enjoy it either way. But listening to it… wow. It’s one of the best audiobooks I’ve had the privilege of listening to.
each chapter it got better & more interesting, keeping me completely intrigued the whole time.
Not only is the storyline amazing. the characters are easy to fall in love with — even the kids — but when you throw the narration in there, it makes it 20 times better, if that’s even possible. Andi & Caden delivered one of the best performances; they made it feel like a movie.
The MMC, in my mind, is definitely the type of “he fell first,” and well… you’ll see once you start this one. I don’t want to ruin it for anyone. Just know that it’s freaking amazing!!
Secrets that bind us by Ruby M Darling is a stand alone romantic thriller, meaning it ends with a happy ending. Perfect for this season, is a small town, a second chance romance, is a spooky house, what can be more perfect? Are you ready to meet your new book husband, lover, daddy and bf? I don’t think you are! Dean is butter, I mean butter, smooth, smart, possessive, dominant, that will make you weep on your legs in moments! Verity, a single mom, a strong independent woman, with an amazing writing career, with the soul of a saint. She is the perfect mom in every way possible. The book is absolutely brilliant, amazingly written. Ruby is a mastermind when it comes to plot twists, but now we discovered she is brilliant at thrillers and spooky scenarios as well ! The smut is just perfection as usual! The visuals of this book are of the charts, they belong in a movie, and here is me calling out for HBO, Netflix, Amazon Prime, MGM production don’t miss on this one before someone else will pick up a story of a lifetime!
This was infinite stars! Every emotion was felt in this book. My attention was gripped from the very first page. It was one that I didn’t want to put down and had me on the edge of my seat. The plot is thick and the spice is flaming hot. This was one heck of a romantic thrill and had my eyes popping many of times. The audible was executed spectacularly and made me feel like I was watching a movie. The angst, the tension and the freaking yearning had me melting. Dean is one of my top MMC’s and this is going to live rent free in my mind for a long while. One of my top reads of 2025!
I was given the opportunity to read this prior to release day as an ARC. I absolutely LOVED it. It had everything, plot, spice, the perfect man, a bit of a thriller romance.
Secrets That Bind Us has impeccable character development, dialogue, and detailing. Ruby Darling paints with words. Her books are vivid, and intense, and so real, they fully immerse you.
It's very well written, but flawed. This book is a slow burn. Too slow. The fairly simple plot is much too drawn-out, with a lot of unnecessary filler. A better editor would have made all the difference.
The story is told through flashbacks and a present timeline. In the present, almost nothing happens for well over twenty chapters. The other major flaw, are the plot twists you see coming from several miles away.
About the audiobook: The female narrator, Andi Eloise, does a great job. Her voice is pleasant and smooth. Her subtle but distinct shift in regional accents is flawless, and her acting is solid and believable.
The male narrator, Caden Hart, is disappointing. Monotone and flat, with a tendency to rush his words, and he mispronounces a few of them. His accent is good, but the lack of emotion or inflection in his delivery, is tiresome and off-putting.
This book feels deeply personal, autobiographical. Not simply because the FMC is a writer. It's the descriptions of growing up in a small town, of neglectful, abusive parents, of first love, of having children, of a shitty first marriage... They're all so visceral, they feel like listening to a friend describe their life to you.
And of course, the undisputed Queen of Spice, once again writes passionate, sensual, intimate sex scenes. There are far fewer of those scenes, than in her other books, and it's quite a wait until they happen.
Secrets That Bind Us, is nothing like the Rayne-Moore books. (Well, almost.) That's not a bad thing, it's actually incredibly impressive. Only the best of authors are able to be this versatile without compromising their skill or losing their audience.
It's not remotely her best work. But this small-town, slice-of-life, second-chance mystery does have enough of the unique writing skill that makes Ruby Darling's books more compelling and satisfying than most.
I did like Secrets That Bind Us, but I’m definitely left with mixed feelings. This book started out much stronger than it ended for me. The plot twist did shock me—I’ll absolutely give it that—but things during and after that reveal felt… kind of weird.
Dean is very much a walking red flag, and while I understand the idea of them being “meant to be,” a lot of his actions crossed into toxic territory that was dressed up as romance. Once certain truths came out, I found myself more annoyed than emotional—especially with Dean and Verity’s so-called best friends. I can’t say much without spoiling anything, but their choices really tested my patience.
That said, there were things I really loved. Verity’s journey toward becoming an author and the story of her childhood added genuine emotional depth to the story and were easily the strongest parts of the book for me. Those moments felt raw, heartfelt, and meaningful.
Overall, was it a good book? Yes. It kept me engaged, made me feel things, and gave me a twist I didn’t see coming.
I also listened to this on audio (ALC), and I have to say—the narration was excellent. The narrators really did a great job bringing the story to life and honestly elevated my experience.
I absolutely loved this book!! Dean Carson is omg!!! How can I create a man like him. The way he loves Verity. This book reminds me of a mild American Horror story meets Gilmore Girls. Verity and Dean were teenage first loves but Verity is determined to escape the small town. She gets married and becomes a number one best selling author and after losing her husband and mother she moves back to Childhood home with her two kids to have her best friends wedding and sell house. After moving in strange things start happening in home and who does she run into??? Mr Dean Carson himself. While Verity has been out living Deans life has been stuck in limbo loving Verity. I don’t want to give to much away so pick up the book. Find out what happens between Dean and Verity. Find out the mystery behind her home. Find out the plot twist in the end. Oh the plot twist. It’s Ruby you know there is a plot twist lol. This book is so good. It’s so heartwarming. And the spice is definitely spicing. Oh yeah. Dean is yummy 😋 Grab this book. A blankie. Some wine or cocoa. Light a candle. And enjoy your night!!!!!

OMG!! My FIRST read from this author and I’m OBSESSED!!!😍😍
The narrators did PHENOMENAL! They made the characters come to life and I was here for it. All that EMOTION I definitely felt. You both did AMAZING !!! 👏🏽👏🏽
OMG IM IN LOVE WITH DEAN CARSON! The longing, yearning, dedication & devotion this man had ??!!😮💨😮💨😮💨 It’s unmatched. He is BOOK HUSBAND 🙌🏽👏🏽 I also liked the FMC. Omg she was brave, one of a kind and unstoppable. I loved her! Their chemistry is EVERYTHING! This book has so many secrets !! I’ve lost count how many but it’s so good! The thriller/suspense aspect? I didn’t see the twist coming because I was so focused on their love and spice! OMG don’t get me started on the spice 😮💨😮💨🔥🔥 I felt mostly all my emotions with this book. Great read ! It has a HEA!🫶🏽

Dean Carson and Verity Huntington were meant to be. It just took a very long time for that to happen.
Verity returns to Adelaide, Texas, after leaving thirteen years ago. She decides to fix up her family home and sell it and rid herself of the memories of this town forever. Strange noises and spiritual inhabitants of the home hinder that plan. Plus, her first love, Dean Carson, wants to be in her life again.
I really enjoyed the dual timeline of this story and that is saying a lot because I am not a fan of dual timelines at all. With this one, though, I was hooked.
This is told in mainly dual POV from Carson and Verity with a few chapters from Verity's two children's POV. The children's POV helped sell the creepiness of the house. It has some very spicy scenes with Carson and Verity, too. HOT.
This audiobook is narrated in Duet by Andi Eloise and Caden Hart. Absolutely wonderful performances from both!
Thank you to the author and Blue Nose Audio for the advanced listener copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I listened to this as an ALC and the narration was incredible. Thank you Blue Nose Audio. Andi was amazing , her range and southern twang really brought the story to life. Caden also did a fantastic job, that man knows what he’s doing… especially during the spicy scenes… SHEESH 🥵. Both narrators absolutely elevated the book.
As for the story, I have mixed feelings. Ruby Darling is the queen of spice seriously, she just does it so well. But overall, the book didn’t fully land for me. There were parts I enjoyed and moments where it felt like it was getting better, but something was missing.
I loved Dean and his possessiveness, but I struggled with Verity and didn’t connect with her at all. The constant single-mom “poor me” vibe got old, and the entity in the house didn’t feel necessary, was Noah seeing sara ever explained? … I will say though, the plot twist was solid. I genuinely didn’t see that coming.
Initially rated this 4.5 but changed my mind as the days went on and I was still thinking about it!! Ruby writes mystery thriller romance soooooooo well! And her plot twist are always hits! She really leaned into the sheriff and single mom trope! And the paranormal haunted house vibes is perfect for the fall season! The banter and yearning!!! Damn you dean Carson! As always her FMC Verity is a bad bitch independent woman who just wants to be cared for. Second chance romance in a small town sheriff agh!! The spice was sooo fucking good!! Ahhhh!!
✨ARC Review✨ The amount of times I said wtf is actually insane. Every time I thought “there’s no way there could be another twist” Ruby said “I’m gonna hold your little hand when I say this, but yes, yes there is.” Dean and Verity’s love story is an absolute rollercoaster. It’s emotional and a long one. And you get to see the whole thing play out over nearly 2 decades. Some people are just meant to be and the way these two kept coming back into each other’s lives just proves that. “It’s always been you” is heavy with them. I think this may have been my first thriller and I’m not mad about it. Did I get the creeps here and there and have to make sure I wasn’t being watched? Yes 🙂↕️ But it kept me going because I needed answers 👀 The found family was strong in this friend group. Verity definitely hit the jackpot with her best friend. She’s a girls girl. 🤭 My favorite scene is most definitely when he pulls her over. 🤣🤣 these two love a good role play 😏 Ruby killed it once again!! Thank you Ruby for this ARC! 🫶🏼
This book is EVERYTHING!!!! The angst, the mystery, the thrills, the SPICE! Dean and Verity are like two magnets drawn together and no matter how they may fight it, they can’t.
Ruby Darling gave us everything in this stand alone book. Tropes include small town romance, second chance romance, first love. This isn’t your typical boy meets girl. It’s so much more and I devoured it.
First, say hello to your new book boyfriend, Dean Carson.
Ruby delivers yet another masterpiece. She weaves you into the story, past and present. You feel every emotion: pain, heartbreak, love and terror. The thriller aspect of this story gave me goosebumps. This is a must read, add to your TBR. You won’t be disappointed. Infinite stars.
Ruby has done it again 👏🏼👏🏼 I absolutely loved this book! Dean and Verity were always meant to be and nothing was going to keep these two apart! There were so many twists and turns!!! I was constantly stunned looking at my kindle like wait what?!?! Highly recommend 🖤
*Audiobook Review* This was so good!! I loved the supernatural/small-town vibes. And the main male character's name as Dean was cherry on top. Ruby had me guessing to the very end.
Performed in duet narration by Andi Eloise & Caden Hart. They did an amazing job!
This was an amazing read. Absolutely loved the story the characters the dual timeline. Getting to watch dean and verity’s relationship from childhood all the way to adulthood was just chefs kiss. The way this man yearned for her the way he loved her was unmatched. Great romantic thriller read.
An Intense & Wild Ride! Incredible Story & Narration🎧
Secrets That Bind Us By: Ruby M. Darling Narrated by: Andi Eloise, Caden Hart
Wow, just wow, this book just blew me away, a story that lures you in right from the start, taking hold of your attention where nothing else around you matters except what is going to happen next in the book. It is best to go in not knowing anything, so avoid spoilers, enjoy the intense and wild ride in the moment and watch it all unfold. I loved the originality and complexity of the story and the characters, the unique telling of the story, alternating timelines, giving glimpses of the past and what brought them to where they are in the present. Verity C. Huntington could not get out of Adelaide, Texas fast enough, finished H.S. early and even her own mother supported her decision knowing the place was bad for her. She returns years later after her mother’s passing, with plans to renovate the old farmhouse, a house that is haunted with ghosts and terrible memories. Her friend wants to hold her wedding there, the place she met her fiancé, and Verity plans on selling it after. Then there was Dean Carson, the boy she loved, but she had to follow her big city dreams, hoping he’d follow, which did not happen. Dean is now a man, and the town’s Sheriff, and he never stopped loving Verity, and it may not have been their time in the past, he knew it was their time now. The chemistry between Verity and Dean was smoking hot, and I enjoyed watching them reconnect, as well as seeing their past relationship grow and build. Ruby M. Darling weaves a complex and mighty fine web around these characters, creating a multilayered story, and it was great watching it all unfold and seeing all the pieces fall into place. Besides Dean and Verity, there are some great side/secondary characters, too, including Verity’s two kids, Savannah and Noah, who stole several scenes. There is never a dull moment in this book, with non-stop drama, angst, twists and turns, thrilling and suspenseful moments that give you the chills, heartfelt emotions, and steamy romance. The writing, plot and world building are fantastic, as are the character growth and development. Ruby M. Darling, thank you for this amazing story and the intense and wild emotional rollercoaster ride.
🎧📚🎧 Andi Eloise and Caden Hart delivered an incredible performance, giving each character a voice that was fitting for a perfect portrayal of each. I loved how they took each role and made it their own, sounding believable and just as I imagined the characters to sound, young and old. Eloise nailed it as Verity, grasping all sides of her personality, from her insecurities to her strength, determination and fierceness. Hart did the same as Dean and was just as amazing at showcasing his personality, from his angst to his protective side. Both were fantastic at performing the roles of the side and secondary characters too. You could hear how much heart they put into their performance as they conveyed all the characters’ emotions, making you feel each one. These two entertaining storytellers are a pleasure to listen to, and their captivating performance rivets you to the story
Okay, wow... this book I think I would say I am pretty speechless. It is rare for me to find a book where I don’t guess the ending half way through the stort and yet this took twits to a whole new level. Secrets that Bind Us by Ruby Darling had me in emotional knots in the best possible way. You know when you're reading something and your brain is just going, “Wow” every few chapters? Yep, that was me, clutching my Kindle like it held the answers to life itself 😅. Ruby does not play when it comes to angst, spice, and characters who are so tangled up in their own emotions that you can't help but feel it too. It’s messy, it’s layered, and honestly, it’s just so much! Full of love and feelings? Always 💕.
What I Loved About This Book ✨
🔀 The Dual Timeline Magic I love a good dual timeline, and this one was so well done. It had me flipping pages, trying to connect the dots, building theories that Ruby promptly crushed with a smile (I just know she was smirking while writing - I see you Ruby!). Each timeline felt rich, real and gave depth to the story in such a clever way.
❤️🔥 Romance That Hurts (In a Good Way) Let’s be real – Ruby knows how to break a heart and make it feel good. The romance in this book? It gutted me. There’s tension, there’s longing, and yes, there is that spicy, hawt hawt heat that we all come for 🔥. But also? There’s so much emotion tucked in between every steamy scene. I felt it all.
🧩 The Mystery That Sneaks Up On You I wasn’t ready for how invested I’d get in the mystery element. It quietly simmers in the background and then BOOM – plot twist central. You think you’ve figured it out? Nope. Reverse Uno, baby. Classic Ruby. Every time I thought I understood a character, something happened and I was like, “...Oh. Ohhhh.” Chef’s kiss. 👏
👥 All. The. Relationships. Dean is literally the emotional core of this book – his connections with Noah, Savvy, and Verity all bring different sides of him to life. The build-up, the slow unravelling of tension and feelings… it’s beautiful. Messy, but beautiful. I loved seeing how each dynamic shifted and evolved. Honestly, it made my heart ache in all the right ways 🫶.
The Tropes: * Dual Timeline * Found Family * Second Chances * Single Mum * Town Sheriff * Hidden Secrets
Ending Summary 💫 Secrets that Bind Us is so much more than just a romance – it’s a journey through past and present, through love and grief, through truth and the lies. It had me clutching my chest, yelling “NOOO” out loud, and then just lying there like a puddle of feelings. If you’re looking for a story that will twist your heart, melt it a little, then twist it again – this is the one ❤️🔥.
Format: Audiobook Narrators: Andi Eloise and Caden Hart
🌻 Second Chance Romance 🤎 Obsessed MMC 🌻 PNR
Non-Spoiler Audiobook Review 🎧 Welcome to Texas.
Ruby has once again, stolen my heart and possibly my sanity (with this one) by creating the dreamiest fictional man, ever. Dean. Fucking. Carson. • Whoosh • Whoosh • Whoosh • Oh, that’s just the sound of my heart, every time Dean spoke to Verity. And that southern drawl damn near TOOK ME OUT 😮💨🔥
I may read dark romance and pitch-black books, but just know, I am a weenie through and through. I’m not the typical scary movie type of girl. Horror and thrillers sort of freak me out. So, when I tell you this book had the hairs on my arms standing up…. OMG! Shivers. The creepy vibe was on point. I purposely waited to read this book until the audio was produced. ONE, I knew it was going to be amazing, even before I pushed play and TWO, I had heard this was a PNR. I didn’t go-in completely blind, but I tried to stay away from reviews and the marketing as much as I could. And I’m so glad I did. The experience seemed more heightened and exhilarating. I literally could not stop listening; every chapter had me craving more, until I had devoured the entire thing.
Imagine falling in love with the same boy, then a man, repeatedly throughout this life, since you were eight years old. Be still my heart 💛🌻 Verity and Dean’s relationship was beautiful. All of it. The heartbreak. The passion. The obsession. The pain. The love. Everything. It all happened for a reason, and I loved every minute of the journey.
Andi Eloise and Caden Hart gave an incredible performance in this duet. I’m always blown away by the talent these voice actors give us, and this was no exception. I was giggling, squealing, blushing, and fanning my face ALL THE WAY through. I have listened to several books Andi has narrated, and she is always amazing, and makes you feel like you’re right there, in the middle of the story. She has quickly become one of my favorite voice actors and a name I look for when searching for a new audiobook. Caden is a newer to me narrator, but, WOW, holy mother of all things, he nailed it at voicing Dean Carson. HE IS DEAN CARSON. I could not get enough of his southern drawl, craving more of his POV’s in the book. With his narration, Caden made you FEEL Dean’s love, desire, and obsession for Verity. I will definitely start looking for more of his books.
STBU is hands down, a 5-star read/listen for me. The characters and storyline seemed real and genuine, with a twist. I adore Ruby’s writing style and her creativity. I cannot recommend this book enough. If you’ve read Ruby’s other books, you may even hear a name or two, you recognize.
You still don’t get it, do you, Dean? A hundred different cities, a million different faces, and yet my heart has only ever loved one. I’ve not only seen your heart, but I’ve also seen your soul. It belongs to me like mine belongs to you.
Ruby was a new author to me so I have to admit that I wasn’t 100% sure what type of writing style I was going into when I received my ALC. But this was pitched as small town suspense and Second Chance romance, so I was ready to see what I would get from the story…. And I can already tell this is going to be a story that I recommend to everyone.
Dean and Verity are definitely one of my new favorite couples. Ruby managed to flawlessly seam together these dual timelines of the past and present of an unlikely romance, but one that was going to withstand the test of time. I’ll be perfectly honest, the plot is simple. This is a very character focused romance, IMO, and it was done so well and so beautifully that you don’t need a lot in the background when it comes to falling in love with them. Verity is such an amazing mom and it’s great seeing her find herself after everything she’s been through. And Dean Carson…. HEART THROB. I love when despite characters have been apart, that second chance trope just falls right into perfect harmony with the storyline. And you are NOT going to miss out on the spice. 🥵🥵🥵 holy crap these scenes are HOT AF!!!
Now that being said, while the plot is simple, there is this really cool suspense and slightly paranormal narrative going on in the background as Verity returns to her childhood home. It keeps you paranoid with the characters, and it keeps you on your toes because you know something’s coming. And holy crap that ending … and in the last few chapters… I was completely holding my breath. Absolutely phenomenal way to end the story. I couldn’t be more impressed and I definitely will be checking out Ruby’s other books ASAP!
In regards to the audiobook, we have a duet narration with Andi Eloise and Caden Hart. They were absolutely amazing as Verity and Dean. The accent, the cockiness from Dean, the emotions that were put into these characters… Absolutely perfect narration!
If you are still looking for the perfect spooky romance to celebrate the end of summer, THIS IS IT!
Without surprise, I've rated this book 5⭐ because apparently I just absolutely freaking love everything this author writes! This is her first standalone, even though it is set in the same world as the RMU series (I mean Verity's shrink is none other than the BEST EVER psycho daddy Dr Damon Archer - *squeeeaaaal*) and it was the first romantic thriller that I've read.
I must admit that I tend to avoid thriller books (and movies) as I am kind of a mouse and my head (or the Universe) gives me my fare share of ghosts, apparitions, moving objects and other missing socks as is... Anyways, I gave Secrets That Bind Us a chance because Ruby Darling is set on auto-read/buy in my brain, and I am not disappointed.
Even though this was not my absolute favorite from her, this book had me in a chokehold from page 1. As always, the romance is so well written it feels real. Like, I was Verity and Dean and I felt each and every of their emotions in my very soul. Their story is soul crushingly beautiful and I cried so much while reading the most beautiful love declarations ever over and over again. Like... I mean, DEAN CARSON!!!!! This man is ultimate husband material! Like, other men say "I love you" but Dean mtfkn Carson says "I can read books". (Also, he's the sherif) And it's everything you need to know to, PLEASE, give this beautiful soul of an author and her books a chance!!! And if you like spice, I am telling you, you won't be disappointed. Well, I mean, as long as you do not think about your reality too much... Because, Ruby keeps raising my standards and expectations of men a little too high and my husband can't keep up anymore. 🫣🤣🙄
I'll finish by saying that I am not usually a fan of the tropes "second chance" and "single parent". But, honestly, the plot, the angst, the tension, the YEARNING were so good I would not have wanted it any different.
Tropes: 🌻Romantic Thriller 🖤 Second Chance 🌻Dual Time Line 🖤 Small Town 🌻 Single Mom
“Did you ever feel my soul crying out to yours?” “Every day. I wanted to come back to you, every day.”
After losing both her husband and her mom, single mom and bestselling author Verity Huntington is already carrying more than her share of heartache. Add in planning her best friend’s wedding at her old family home, and suddenly she’s heading back to small-town Adelaide, the very place she once swore she’d left behind for good.
But moving back into her childhood home to fix it up and sell it isn’t exactly smooth sailing. For one thing, the house may or may not be haunted. For another, her first love, Dean Carson, now the town sheriff, very much still has her in his sights. And Dean? He’s determined to win her back, no matter what things go bump in the night.
HOLY WOW. I spent half of this book muttering “Dean Carson, the MAN you are!” to myself. He is the definition of a book boyfriend! Sweet, swoony, and just the right amount of intense. And let’s be real: add sunflowers into a romance and I am done for. 🌻 Instant favorite. 🌻
The dual timelines between past and present made the whole story even more magical. Dean has always burned with pure recklessness, while Verity’s quiet resolve gave their love this incredible balance. The invisible string tying them together practically hummed off the page! You could feel their connection in every scene.
And as always, Ruby’s writing delivers big time. Her imagery is stunning! Every page felt like I was watching a movie unfold. The emotional pull was beautifully done, and the spooky, haunted house moments? Chef’s kiss. (Full disclosure: I’m a total scaredy cat, so this was firmly a “don’t read in the dark” kind of book for me!)
All in all, the thrills are delicious, the romance is unforgettable, and Dean Carson just might ruin you for other book boyfriends. Pick up this book and meet him! You won’t regret it.
