The Date is a well-written, expertly paced thriller from the start. Fans of multiple POV will love this one, as the author effortlessly weaves a varied cast of players together from chapter to chapter.
The book begins with a murder trial, the main character accused of murdering a woman he went on a single date with. After being acquitted, he embarks on a once-in-a-lifetime trip to New Zealand with his sister and a handful of friends, where tension begins to build between everyone for various reasons before the plane even leaves the ground.
This was a page-turner for me. I really enjoyed the way the author breadcrumbed details throughout, and it came to a satisfying conclusion. The twists weren’t obvious, but not so outlandish that they couldn’t be at least partially guessed. (It’s a pet peeve of mine when the reader doesn’t have enough information to be clued into the structure of a twist in any way.) I would definitely read another novel by this author!

This review is painful to write because I genuinely thought I was about to be swept into a twisty, addictive thriller. The first chapter grabbed me immediately. It had tension, intrigue, and just enough mystery to make me excited for what was coming next. Unfortunately, for me, that first chapter ended up being the highlight of the entire book.
The initial date was compelling and had me fully invested. After that? It felt like the story packed its bags, changed planes three times, and forgot where it was supposed to be going. I kept reading because I was convinced there had to be some brilliant payoff waiting around the corner. Instead, each chapter seemed to introduce another bizarre turn that pulled me further away from the story rather than deeper into it.
The characters were difficult to connect with because so many of their choices felt baffling. Nobody reacted the way I expected actual people to react. Trust was handed out like free samples at a grocery store, and decisions were made that had me repeatedly asking, "Why would anyone do that?" Instead of creating suspense, it created frustration.
The plot itself felt scattered. We start with the promise of a murder trial, then suddenly we're bouncing to New Zealand, wandering through forests with friends who don't seem particularly trustworthy, meeting random new people, and accepting situations that require a suspension of disbelief I simply couldn't manage. Every time I thought the story was settling into a direction, it veered off onto another road entirely.
And the twists? I love a good twist. I actively seek out books that leave me staring at the wall questioning everything I just read. But these twists felt less like carefully planted surprises and more like someone throwing darts at a board full of plot ideas. By the end, I wasn't shocked. I was exhausted.
What really surprised me is that so many readers seem to have had an incredible experience with this book. I kept waiting for the moment where everything clicked into place and I finally understood the hype. Sadly, that moment never arrived for me. Instead, I found myself feeling increasingly disconnected from both the story and the characters.
There are definitely readers who will enjoy the wild ride this book offers, but I wasn't one of them. I wanted a gripping psychological thriller and instead got a story that felt chaotic, implausible, and ultimately unsatisfying.
Final Verdict: The first chapter promised me a five-star thriller. The rest of the book delivered a confusing road trip through plot twists, questionable decisions, and enough detours to make my head spin. Unfortunately, The Date and I just weren't a match. 💔📚

In order to escape the media frenzy, and a series of threatening messages, Miles, his sister, and some friends, set off on a trip to New Zealand. While there, they meet a couple of young women who accompany them on a caravan trip into a remote New Zealand forest. When one of the campers is found murdered, everyone is on edge and eager to leave the remote forest so they can report the death and get help. However, relentless, torrential rain, and their disabled camper make it impossible to flee.
While I mostly enjoyed this suspenseful tale, the rainy time in the camper dragged a lot, not only for Miles and his friends, but for the reader, also. The characters all seemed to have something to hide, and this added to the complex mystery of who killed Caira and who is now stalking Miles. I would gladly read other titles by this author, though I would hope the pacing would be a bit improved.

This is a good debut, well written with a tight plot and some great twists. All the threads are tied up seamlessly and the author manages to slip the guilty person past me which doesn’t happen often. A taut thriller with a great final twist. Good read.

The premise is so engaging. A year after a first and only day miles is acquitted of murder. In order to get his head together and avoid the trolls and his stalker he embacks on a trip with his sister and pals to new zealand. Queue an engaging thriller where you arent sure where the story is going and if Miles is trully innocent. It took a while to get going and let me in for a thrill ride as i tried to work out who the stalker was and was miles guilty. This was a binge read full of characters and flawed arc. The final reveal blew me away and tied everything together. I like the emotion side of the character and their past and the loyalty between them. This is perfect for anyone who likes to explore the what is the truth and what is the lie. Thank you so much netgallery, author and publisher

This thriller had me hooked from the very first page. A murder after a first date? A man haunted by accusations? Mysterious messages from someone who’s supposed to be dead? I absolutely could not stop reading.
Miles was such an interesting main character because I was constantly questioning whether he was innocent or hiding something darker. The isolated road trip setting added so much tension, and once the group reached the forest, the suspense became nonstop. Every chapter left me second-guessing everything and everyone.
The story perfectly blended psychological suspense with classic whodunit tension, and the twists kept coming right up until the end. Dark, fast-paced, and impossible to put down.

Meanwhile, even away from the press scrutiny in the UK, Miles is being stalked and threatened by an anonymous vigilante who is convinced that he got away with murder. Many surprises are revealed during the sojourn in the remote forest, but the identity of the killer is the book’s last surprise. Unputdownable.

This book was intense and I finished it in one day.
Miles was accused of murder after a date with a womaand it took more than a year for him to finally be declared innocent.
He decides to disappear to New Zealand with his good friends to avoid the British paparazzi. Unfortunately, it doesn't go as planned. Someone is harassing and threatening him anonymously, going to NZ didn't go as planned, he's still being followed.
The story kept me hooked all the way to the shocking and unbelievable ending ... so good, I loved it!

This book had me hooked pretty quickly. It was suspenseful and kept me questioning things the whole time, which I love in a thriller. I kept going back and forth on what I thought actually happened.
By the end, I felt pretty confident in who Caira’s killer was, but getting there was still a fun ride. It definitely kept my attention and I ended up really enjoying it overall.
A solid, engaging read that’s worth picking up.

This was a weird psychological thriller that will keep u guessing until the last page! It starts with a date then a murder trial , then a trip to New Zealand where the drama continues then back to London! This was definitely an original story with plenty of drama and complex characters! I really enjoyed the characters as they were very realistic. I’m sure we all have friends like them. I recommend this book. It’s my first time reading this author and I really enjoyed it.

The Date is completely addictive. It grips you from the first sentence and doesn’t let you go until the very end. Murdock’s writing is sharp and witty, his characters beautifully crafted, and the plot perfectly paced. I’m usually good at guessing twists, but not this time. Clearly an author to watch, I cannot wait for his next thriller.

Super fun suspense story! This one really kept me on my mental toes. Every character became a suspect at one point or another, which is a hallmark of a good mystery. Lots of witty dialogue and unpredictable twists too. I can’t say that I was rooting for any particular character, as none were very endearing, but overall the book was a treat!

I am so glad I picked this as one of my Amazon First Read choices. This was a fast paced thriller that keeps you guessing at every chapter. And that ending was not at all what you expected. I thought the multiple POVs were going to make it difficult to keep up with characters but the writing style was very smooth and very easy to keep up with.

Some missed editing spots. While the ending in satisfying, the Epilogue is not at all satisfying. It's also still difficult to read books about characters with that much wealth and privilege. It sucks that legal systems are designed in such a way that wealth is often required in order to achieve the correct verdict in trial.

a riveting story
The story is not a happy summertime read but it’s got atmosphere to the hilt. Some of the English phrases are a bit hard to understand but that is a tiny distraction. The story truly reads like a worst nightmare. The characters seem believable and well written. If you like a murder mystery this is a good one.

Loved this! The Date is a superior thriller that's tightly plotted and expertly executed. I didn't guess the ending and it kept me wondering until the last page. I look forward to reading more of T.H.Murdock's thrillers - he's an author to watch.

Oh my God. I got the chills so many times toward the end of this book. It completely blew my mind. It managed to surpass my high expectations AND be nothing at all like I expected
