Christmas Creeps from the Deep: A holiday horror comedy

Rate this book
This Christmas, a hero will rise from the trailer park.

Earl Frost isn't what most people would call a hero. He's indoorsy. He lives with his grandma in a 1970s single wide in the Misty Pines Trailer Park. He spends most of his time taking care of his pet fish and working nights at Cecil's Gas 'n' Stop. Earl Frost also hates Christmas, which is a cardinal sin up there with pride and greed in Holiday Lake.

Holiday Lake is like a town on a Christmas card, or in one of those holiday romance movies that play non-stop on TV. Everyone here loves Christmas. Except for Earl. He has his reasons, but his bah humbug attitude hasn't helped him make friends. That's why Earl had to join a doomsday Cthulhu cult just to get some pals to drink beer with.

Which is great until a cult ritual in the back of a junk shop goes wrong, and horrific creatures rise from the lake, hell-bent on killing and destroying everyone and everything in their path.

Earl will have to team up with the Misty Pines Trailer Park Thursday Night Knitting Club and the girl of his dreams to stop the creatures as they slash their way through town. Can Earl save Holiday Lake—and Christmas—from monsters unlike any man has ever seen? Find out in Christmas Creeps from the Deep!

Christmas Creeps from the Deep is the new cozy holiday horror / science fiction comedy creature feature from the author of 24/7 Demon Mart. It's like a Hallmark Christmas romance meets Humanoids from the Deep. Part eco horror, part romcom, one hundred percent adventure.

It's perfect for fans of Suckerville (Chris Sorensen), Secret Santa (Andrew Shaffer), Oddjobs (Heide Goody/Iain Grant), The Stupidest Angel (Christopher Moore), Kaiju Preservation Society (John Scalzi), The Visitor (Sergio Gomez), and Candy Cain Kills (Brian McAuley).

Nobody believes Earl Frost when he tells them the monsters are coming. He tells them every Christmas. But this year, he just happens to be right.

A brilliant horror comedy about giant fish monsters who come out of the lake and start killing people. It was gory in the best ways, with a spattering of humour throughout. From gun-wielding grannies to characters being tortured by Mariah Carey (you know which song), this book had it all.
Will definitely be checking oit more from this author.

A horror comedy like no other. D. M. gives us Earl, the scrooge of his trailer park. He lives with his grandma and is in love with his neighbor. A cult ritual brings these human fish-shaped people from the lake, and they begin tearing into the residents of the town. It's up to Earl and the Misty Pines Thursday night knitting club to save the town. It's gory, funny, bloody, and goofy. A top notch, fun holiday read for this season. Can't wait to see what else D. M. has in store for us in the future.

Surprise treat 🤗

So I am a huge D.M. Guay fan especially 24/7 Demon Mart series n as she mentions at the end of her book, I was a bit miffed that this was not a Christmas Demon Mart but I love her stories, so I gave it a try. It was so silly and heartwarming and suspenseful n the end was completely fabulous !!!!! If you are a true fan or just want something new give this book a try it really was a fun read!!!

It is spooky season. Ghosts, goblins, and even the scariest thing of all - politicians! At least this is an off year so we can just enjoy the holiday with a little less speeches and yard signs.

Unfortunately, that big red specter of commercial doom insists one dominating everything for months. Some times if you can't beat em, you just have to join them.

So what better way to enjoy both holidays than the latest book from my favorite horror/comedy writer.

Picture that generic hallmark Christmas town - celebrating their annual festival (It is even named Holiday Lake). We have all seen this movie so many times (or at least the constant ads for romantic holiday comedies that seem to flood the airwaves. Now just add an army of fishmen attacking the unsuspecting towns folk, and we have a truly festive holiday!

Earl Frost (the perfect name) happens to hate Christmas (and he has good reason to). Of course that attitude doesn't make him popular in a town centered around Yule time. When he finds a couple of buddies willing to hang out with him if he only puts on robe and works towards the end of the world - well what is the harm in a few beers with friendly cultists?

Of course hijinks ensue. But not everything is bad, at least it gives Earl a chance to talk to Holly, who he has longed for, well as long as he can remember. But what is with all the grandma's buying ammunition?

Not for the faint of heart, as there is plenty of blood and guts, and a lot of the red upon the ground is not for the holiday celebration. Is Earl going to save the holiday he hates, become the hero of the town, and get the girl? Or just become more chum in the streets for the rampaging fishmen. And how does Bucky and his doomsday cult trying to bring back the sleeping Cthulhu and the end of the world have to do with it all?

The balance between the monsters eviscerating helpless townsfolk, the budding romance and the humor of what is a frighteningly ridiculous situation is balanced perfectly.

One of my favorite bits is a great running joke that truly only works in print. It takes a spark of genius to hit something that perfectly. (As an aside, I know the person that this is based off of (ok, making fun of) and plan to give him a hard time about from now on). If you are at all curious as to how a book like this comes about, then definitely read the book sausage at the end for all the meaty details.

This is also one of the most cinematic of all the authors works - it was almost like watching a "B" movie late Saturday night - though much better written.

While I love continuing series, it is also nice to get an occasional one-shot with entirely new characters and situations as a way to cleanse your reading palate.

I sure didn't have 'humanoid fish monsters attack on Christmas' on my bingo card this year.

Hold onto your donuts kids because the Queen of Horror Comedy is back this holiday season with another creepy crawly creature feature! That's right, in the coming weeks (see the author's webpage for exact details if you want this BEFORE the Amazon release date) the Mistress of Mayhem herself who, in her own words "can't resist a moist monster" (oh behave!), that is the delightfully merry and often murderous D.M.Guay returns with a new tale, namely, "Christmas Creeps from the Deep". And trust me: as we get to witness the destruction and chaos that strikes Holiday Lake - already sounds ominous and all foreshadowy, doesn't it? - with barely more than the Misty Pines Thursday Night Knitting Club to protect everyone, well, we know we're in for quite the show.

The fish are biting. And they're killers.

Now so that this won't come as a shock to any of the true faithful of the Church of the 24/7 Demon Mart (in Kevin's name we pray), please note in advance that this story is not a direct part of that universe (though we are all connected in some mysterious and decidedly odd way). However, despair ye not, because if you know this author's catalogue like I and other like-minded lunatics do, that matters little! For just as with another of her offers, namely "Bake Off" (trust me, it's out there!), "Creeps" has a very granny-licious slant to it, along with some other small towners you won't be able to help but fall in love with. Or not depending on their role in the story (hint: nobody likes a bully). And as she is wont to do, Guay brings this new gang to life so vividly you'd swear they were based on folks you know all too well (yeah, I'm looking at you, Cyle with a C!).

You can't let these monsters ruin Christmas! Amen.

This was a really exciting story to be sure though and we waste no time realizing just how bad things are going to get before it's all said and done. There's a teaser mini-story that shows just how slicey and dicey these so-called creeps can be and before we know it, ice-fishing is off the menu. Then of course we meet this story's version of Lloyd, namely, Earl Frost (are we getting into the theme, yet?) the patented likeable loser whose likeability and loserness ebbs and flows like a great ebby flowy thing. Earl is not the most he-mannish of men when we start out, but you know through the power of love, a new-born confidence, and enough firepower to blow a new hole in the ozone layer that he'll somehow pull us out of this mess by the end. Of course, that's with the help of the love of his life, Holly Green (yep, themed names, gotta love 'em), who winds up being a pretty tough fighter herself. Maybe not on a fully-fledged Granbo level just yet but hey, there's always room for practice and improvement! And cheese puffs.

Granny wasn't ruffled. She was cool as a wrinkled old cucumber.

And there's the usual small-town folks hanging around and making sheer messes of the situation, too, from a Sheriff that's just about had enough of all this nonsense but then realizes "oh shit, it's real!" to the bubbly yet inherently incompetent mayor. Oh and the irritating woman who uses this opportunity to remind us all of the upcoming rapture if we don't get our act together because it's a lack of good clean religious living that has caused all this! Oh, and this is a new rapture that will definitely happen this time, honest ("I'll shove that Bible so far up your ass you'll be shitting psalms for a week."). Anyway, you can use your imagination and probably be right on about 80% of the local citizenry, at least the ones that manage to get to the big final battle and rescue scene while retaining their heads. Literally. But it's just this small-town goodness and clever improvisation (is that how you spell that? Let's just call it Tylenol and move on) as well as the destructive power of Mariah Carey's Christmas catalogue being blasted through new speakers that really makes the story as our hero, Earl, slowly but surely figures out how to save the day. Or at very least Christmas Eve because after that, we're not sure what crawled back up out of the depths to finish, um, unfinished business.

He'd be caught in the world's worst fish sandwich if he messed up.

Bottom-line is this is yet another hilarious escapade from a writer that knows exactly how to push my funny bone buttons. Yeah, there's some gore and when it's this cold out, you know folks are gonna be slippin' and slidin' around in the offal and viscera to boot. But if you like pullin' for the underdogs and aren't really all that much into the hokeyness and schmaltz of this season's cloned crop of Hallmark movies (ye gods, my wife LOVES them!!!), this is definitely one book that needs to be part of your holiday celebrations! Sing with me: have a holly jolly Mog wee riley wag nag flum, it's the best time of the year… And they all lived happily ever after … but before that they "kissed. Sloppy. Wet. Slurpy. And everyone in the town square cheered."

The 24/7 Demon Mart series has been on my list for a while now, but as always, something new and shiny comes along and I bite (this joke makes sense, I promise). So when I saw that D. M. Guay was releasing a Christmas themed creature feature, I went for that instead. Christmas Creeps from the Deep was exactly what I was looking for the week before Christmas.

In the town of Holiday Lake, Christmas cheer is law. Earl Frost is the only resident who cannot stand the holiday. He lives a quiet, awkward life in a rundown trailer park, works nights at a gas station, and accidentally joins a strange cult just to have someone to hang out with. When a botched ritual unleashes lake monsters on the town, Earl is forced into an unlikely hero role. With help from his trailer park neighbors, Mariah Carey, and a potential love interest, he must stop the fishmen and save the town before Christmas is destroyed.

First things first, D. M. Guay is hilarious. This book has a ton of humor. Things like Grambo, a grandma Rambo combination, which had me hooked. Christmas Creeps from the Deep felt like reading the horror version of a Hallmark movie, which is exactly how D. M. describes it in a section of her book she calls Book Sausage. This is where D. M. talks about how this book came to be, citing movies and books that inspired her. After reading that section, I was left wondering why this is not more common, and I added several movies to my watch list. Thanks. Overall, Christmas Creeps from the Deep is a great time. It is a fun creature feature with Hallmark romance wrapped up in a fishy battle royale.

Based on reading this book, I know I will be stopping at the 24/7 Demon Mart at least once in 2026.

DM Guay does it again in this unfathomable holiday horror comedy.

Comparable: Hell for the Holidays by DM Guay, Tucker and Dale vs Evil (2010), Critters (1986).

This book is ideal for anyone looking for holidays themed books that aren't preachy, family oriented, and a lot of chaotic fun! It's also just under 200 pages, so no big time investment.

I am a big fan of DM Guay's work, in fact I started reading her work after getting a copy of Hell for the Holidays years ago for Christmas, so I was thrilled to get a copy of Christmas Creeps from the Deep this year.

As with all of DM Guay's, this book is fast paced with extremely vivid characters and a loveable schmo as the unexpected hero protagonist. Here we have Earl Frost, the gullible schmo who lives with his granny and is kind of a town joke. He's also known as a harmless Grinch, not because he is a mean one, but because he seems to go out of his way to ruin Christmas, though his intentions are not malevolent. This year, he gets suckered into a wannabe cult dedicated to the rise of fishmen from the lake. Enter the fishmen rising from the lake and our unexpected hero on a mission to save his granny, the girl next door that he's secretly in love with, and the rest of the town regardless of what they think of him.

If I had any questions (which is rare when it comes to DM Guay's work), it would be that the author seemingly abandoned a huge, recurring plot point about environmental impact, which left the ending not fully, well, fulfilling.

What do you get when you cross Hallmark Christmas movies set in a trailer park, fish-men rising from the icy lake, and a whole lotta bloody mayhem? You get this.

Poor Earl can't catch a break. He lives with his grandma in her trailer, he's in love with his neighbor there, and he's joined a cult run by the owner of a junk store run out of a single wide trailer. Oh, and then human shaped fish people rise from the lake and start slicing and dicing their way through the town who's celebrating their local Christmas lights festival. And it's going to be up to Earl, a gun toting bad ass group of grannies, and his crush to stop the bloodshed!

This is a hilarious, gory, and fun novel with fantastic characters. Just when you think things couldn't get any more gloriously goofy (in the very best possible way), the author adds a new element that will crack you up and/or spill more blood on the pages. It's one of those books that plays out in your head and makes you smile. Righteously absurd, completely engaging, and hilariously gory. I highly recommend it.

I received a copy of this book from the author. This review is voluntary and is my own personal opinion.

I never thought that I would end up reading a horror book, but here we are at the end of 2025, reading the entire catalogue of D.M. Guay and enjoying every single line of here books.

This book is a standalone story and is not related to her 24/7 demon mart series but I do recommend people who have enjoyed that series to give this a try. It has the same mix of humour, heart and horror as her other books and it is oh so very, very fun! On the other hand, I think this is also a good introduction to readers who have never read anything by this author as it will give you a good idea if her style is for you or not.

With regards to the plot we have Earl Frost, his granny and Holly Green together with several other grannies and eventually villagers trying to save their quaint, hallmarky village from killer fishmen. It is set during Christmas time and I think the author has nailed the vibes. I really found all of the main characters so loveable and be assured... there are no damsels in distress in here.

One last thing I want to mention is the humour in this book. Humour is subjective but I like her comedy and timing and even though there is horror and some gore in this book, they are offset by her funny lines.

I really recommend this book. It was one of my favourites I read for this year and I will definitely re-read next year because I enjoyed my time with it. Now to continue with her 24/7 demon mart!

Author D.M. Guay is celebrating Christmas this year with another Yuletide tale of a Christmas gone awry. This time the monsters are creatures that made me think of the Creature from the Black Lagoon—certainly scary and dangerous feeling.

The heroes are a group of over-the-top trailer park denizens who happen to live too close to the lake where the monsters abide. As they swarm the town and its holiday decorations, a few outsiders organize the defense and discover a bit of a mystery on the way.

This is light fare for the holiday season akin to eating a candy cane while enjoying the day.

This Book Has it All

I really enjoy a D.M. Guay book. This one definitely did not disappoint me. It is a very interesting read. I would describe it as comedy, horror fantasy, Christmas, rom-com.
The main character is not your everyday romantic hero. Earl seems like the kind of guy that could exist in any small town. The plot is unusual. This book is action packed and easy to follow.
I absolutely recommend this book if you are looking for something different, interesting and fun to read.

This was a fun and cheesy Christmas creature feature.

If you have read any of by D.M. Guay's work you have a good idea what to expect, if not, their writing is fun, easy to read, with a great mix of comedy and gory horror.

There is lots of great references to some of my (our) favourite creatures features both from book and films, the characters are fun and charismatic, and the story had more depth that I was expecting.

So if you are looking for a quick, fun read this Christmas, that check this one out. you will love it.

A funny, sci-fi horror themed Christmas story filled with chuckles and gore. This was an entertaining read about a man who saves his town from killer humanoid fish. Although this story is everything that it says, there were some moments when I was a little confused as to who was alive and who wasn’t. But as a cherry on top of the overall cake, I did enjoy the homage to other horror movies that were thrown in :)

'Earl called after him. “That's what I'm telling you, Skeeter. The fish are biting. And they're killers. The great old ones are coming!”'

It's fun. It's festive. And it's fishier than any other Christmas book you'll read. It's laugh-out-loud funny and surprisingly sweet. The author describes this as a 'trailer park version of a Hallmark holiday romance meets Humanoids from the Deep.' It is as described.

'It was a fish. That walked on land like a man. A fishman. And it was big.'

fun comedy horror romp through the trailer park

Saved to read during the holidays but then my 20 year old daughter got it before me and was laughing so much I was itching for her to finish! It was just what I expected and needed as a break from holiday stress and to turn off my brain. I liked the subplot trailer trash holiday romance and the gun toting knitting grannies. Great fun!

Another win by D.M. Guay

This was another win for author D.M. Guay not only did the book bring me great joy but the main female character was named Holly Green and I actually know a Holly Green and couldn't wait to tell her about this book. Not to mention Granny is everything I aspire to be as a granny. Bad ass

Slapstick Lovecraftian Horror

If you like the author’s Demon Mart books, this one is a lot like them in the tone it sets, but is more campy, slapstick, and absurd. It’s certainly an acquired taste, but if you enjoy Demon Mart then you’ll probably enjoy this as well, although the campiness was a bit too much for me at times.

Recommended for Demon Mart fans. I give it 4/5 stars.

Earl Frost is a misfit and town nobody, but when fishmen attack at the towns Christmas festival, he steps up to lead the charge. Assisted by the girl of his dreams, his granny and her knitting club, the fight is on. Fun, silly book, that moves at a nice pace.

I really liked the bit at the end of the book where Guay shares all the inspiration and nods to other work; it’s really cool to see how she crafted the sausage…err, story.
