In a far-future age where science and magic clash, a young wizard faces deadly perils in search of her rightful course.
Mirafra the Tree Pipit is thrilled to serve as apprentice to a wizard ambassador to the Warmlands. She’s even found a close friend, Arwyn the Duke’s youngest son. But when the Duke’s castle is attacked in the night by monstrous warriors, Mirafra and Arwyn barely escape with their lives.
Rescued by the airship of a renegade magician, the Mooncrow, they journey to the towering glass city of Baivonne, then on to Montodoro, High Sanctuary of the Norrling wizards. There, Mirafra advances to the rank of Ruby Lark.
She and Arwyn accept the mission to return to the Warmlands and destroy the power of the evil sorceress, Jovadia the Bittern. But on arrival, Mirafra’s mind is confused, her memories scattered. Has she been bewitched by Jovadia, or have her own allies betrayed her?
Full of mystery, magic, and intrigue, Ruby Lark will delight fans of high fantasy and steampunk adventure alike.
This is a true example of epic fantasy. It is very old-school and has a strong magic system. I am a sucker for anything that is full of sorcery and wizards, and this book is fully loaded. The world building is impeccable throughout this whole series. This is a series that I took my time with and I’m glad that I did.
MASSA SURE KNOWS HOW TO WRITE ‘EM… particularly impressive adventure fantasies, that is! Make sure you spend a few minutes studying the map he reveals to you on page three. It will look familiar; moreover, it will introduce you to the futuristic (quite possible) world where the story takes place.
This is a tale with kings, castles, battles, a musician, wizards/birds, and more. I suggest that you do a little study of ornithology to appreciate how the author matched birds to the wizards (and their levels of achievement). Along with me, you will likely laugh and fall in love with the portly emu.
RUBY LARK by itself, or after MOONCROW, will take you on an intelligently written, extremely creative magical adventure – just like EVERY BOOK that Jack Massa writes does!
