If you spend any time at all with Meghan McComb, sooner or later she will tell you a story. It might be a tale from her past, an amusing anecdote about her family, or a testimony about something amazing God has done in her life. Words and pictures are her creative and spiritual gifts.

A lifelong daydreamer with an overactive imagination, Meghan has been a writer, artist, and singer for as long as she can remember. She holds a B.A. with Honors in Art History from SUNY Potsdam. What she loved most about her college major was hearing the stories about the artists’ lives and works.

In 1983 Meghan married Richard McComb. They have spent almost all their married life near Ithaca in the beautiful Finger Lakes region of upstate New York. For sixteen years she was a stay-at-home mom homeschooling their three now-grown children.

Her romantasy fairy tale series The Rose In The Fire paints a vivid picture of spiritual warfare in the life of one young girl. The story grew out of her actual experience of deliverance from fears, depression, nightmares, and other lasting effects caused by her involvement in occult practices as a young teen.

When she is not writing, you will no doubt find Meghan talking out loud to herself as she neglects to water her houseplants, does daily word puzzles with paper and pencil, and brews coffee that will knock your socks off. To learn more about her life, visit her blog at https://theroseinthefire.com or follow her on Instagram or Facebook. She would love to hear from you and would be most grateful for your review on Amazon.

I am intrigued by this story and cannot wait to read the next book. However, I was hoping for more character development throughout the story. I do love how you start to feel as hopeless as the character in this story, just wish there was a little bit more growth to carry you into the next book. Overall, it was a good story and I am thankful I was given the chance to experience it.

A refreshingly unique and vivid examination of an unusual subject: demonic oppression. The colorful, unseen 'servants of the dark knight' that, one by one, populate Aidan's world, insidiously take over her life and force her to entertain the vilest of thoughts and desires. Aidan lives under the delusion that she's a 'good' person, but in reality, evil forces are swirling all around her that make her think and behave in ways she never could have imagined. This novel suggests that demonic forces are at the root of our darkest thoughts and desires, and that we can be oppressed by these forces without even knowing it. When Aidan encounters the fierce, white knight who hands her a beautiful white rose, she realizes there is hope for deliverance from the demons that imprison her.
The characters and plot unfold bit by bit, creating an atmosphere of suspense. I look forward to reading the next installment to find out what happens next.

Lies and Deception is a clever and creative fairytale about a young woman named Aidan who grew up a victim of abuse after being left on the doorstep of a terrible woman she calls Aunt Mara. After Mara’s death, she meets and starts receiving all these guests sent by the Dark Prince. As the author herself mentions at the beginning of the book, you will see the ties to Christianity all throughout the book. It’s a relatable, fictionalized account of how Satan works in your life, promising to give you everything you’ve ever wanted with his lies and deception, but Jesus, the One Who Will Love You Forever, can save you if you just accept His gift. It’s a beautiful story that kept me turning the pages to find out what guest was coming next and looking forward to the Knight’s appearance. And I will definitely be keeping an eye out for the next book in the series!

Thank you to both Meghan and Love Book Tours for this opportunity to be able to read and review this book.

This book really intrigued me as it’s very different to other dark fantasy/dark romantasy books I’ve read before with its element of horror added in.

This started off pretty slow but the pace of the book really starts to pick up once you get to meet more characters and their backgrounds and what part they play in this story.

I really felt for Aidan and her past and what she has been through and all of a sudden she’s bombarded with all these visitors and it was interesting to see how Aidan interacted with each individual visitor but you slowly started to understand why as the story went on.

The concept of this book was interesting and original and it kept me hooked. It intertwined Christianity, magical realm, and manifestation.

This was a dark fairytale I just needed and the cliffhanger 🤭

Book One Review

This book seemed like an analogy of a good portion of my life. I am looking forward to the next books. I was delighted each time the Fire Rose aided Aidan!! I don't want to give away too much of the content to those that have not read this yet!

I loved that I got the opportunity to read this book. It has been a long time since I read a book so rich with symbolism. The longer you read, the more emotions you feel. It is like you are in the main characters shoes experiencing what she is. The book has such a eerie feeling. It is a slow burn, and I don't think everyone would be able to appreciate that the same way I did. However, there is so much character/world building. Every character has a purpose. It really is a beautiful way to describe ones struggle with their faith.

Aiden’s home is no longer her own when the Dark Prince sends guests to stay with her. Can she escape before it’s too late?

It’s very difficult to describe this book other than completely unique because I’ve never read anything like it before. The storyline included a fantasy element but with very real situations.

Aiden is an orphan who was raised by her Aunt Mara. They weren’t blood related but Aiden was left on Mara’s doorstep as a baby. The book starts with Mara’s funeral. Although Aiden and everyone else is mourning Mara what becomes apparent is that Mara didn’t treat Aiden very well. Aiden was subjected to emotional and physical abuse that no one was aware of. So in some ways the start of the book is the beginning of Aiden’s freedom, that is until the guests start to arrive. When Aiden gives them the key to her home what she doesn’t realise is that she’s giving them the key to her life.

It was very interesting to see each of these guests arrive and how Aiden interacted with them. Just by their names it was clear that some of them were going to be trouble. At times I wasn’t sure if these were real guests or manifestations of Aiden’s inner feelings and insecurities. The only reason that Aiden welcomes them initially is because they seem to know who her mother is and she has been told that the Dark Prince has sent them to care for her. To start with it did feel like the guests wanted to look out for Aiden but then it felt like they were trying to control her. Aiden had in a way broke free of Aunt Mara’s prison and found herself in another. The only gleam of hope in her life is the knight she encounters and the rose he gives her. He is like Aiden’s knight in shining armour, her rescuer. She needs to find out who he is but that means putting herself in more danger from her guests.

This book ended on quite a big cliff hanger and I’m really intrigued to see what happens to Aiden next.

Omg did I devoured this book or did this book devour me ! From the very first page, the story had me in an absolute chokehold and refused to let me go. The suspense was constant, the twists are perfectly timed and unpredictable and the emotional tension makes it impossible to stop reading.

Meghan E. McComb shines when it comes to creating characters that completely and utterly realistic making you forget that they are actually fictional. No one feels predictable or flat and the secrets that each of the characters carry adds so much depth to the story. Slowly but surely as the truth comes to light, the stakes rise in such a way that it keeps you gripping the edge of your seat eagerly waiting to find out what happens next.

Her writing is so engaging and smooth, making it so easy to get lost in the story all whilst still feeling deeply connected to the characters. The pacing is impeccable—every reveal feels earned and the build up makes the payoff feel incredibly satisfying.

If you enjoy stories full of secrets, drama and emotional intensity then Lies and Deception is an absolute must-read. It’s the kind of book that makes you stare at the wall for days after it’s finished you whilst also making you beg to read more from Meghan E. McComb.

If you love tropes such as:
•slow-burn
•morally grey characters
•trust vs betrayal
•emotional angst
•coming of age

then this is the book for you!

Lies and Deception is a unique fantasy story that reads with quite a bit of mystery as the plot progresses. It’s delivered through the various characters, beginning with Aidan.

Aidan is an orphan raised in “poverty and abuse”. She’s trying to find her mother. The story introduces several other characters with non-traditional names, including Unloved, Unwanted, Depression, Drudgery, Anger, and Abuse. There are more. And this is when the mystery, I think, kicks in at least for me.

I got the sense that the unique names might be more like metaphors for Aidan’s inner self or her own emotions—another way of how she copes. These “characters” arrive once the Dark Prince enters the story, as he seeks the key to her heart.

The story has a fairy-tale vibe as Aidan goes from poverty, living in loneliness and abuse, to breaking free, though I found she was also emotionally breaking free. She still finds herself physically beholden to her home.

Lies and Deception is not a story to read through quickly. It’s one that you do need to pay attention to the details, as each character represents something that ties into the plot. It leaves on a cliffhanger, prompting further questions.

Thank you to Love Book Tours and the Author, Meghan E. McComb, for the gifted copy. I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Thank you to Meghan E. McComb and Love Books Tours for the opportunity to read and review this book!

This book was quite a bit different from other fantasy books that I have read, and I really enjoy those that stick out from the rest. This was my first book by this author, but I really enjoyed the writing style and storytelling, so I seriously doubt that it will be my last…especially since this book ends on a cliffhanger and I need to know what happens, lol. I didn’t realize going into this book that there would be a bunch of ties to Christianity, and parallels how Jesus and Satan can influence your life and your choices. I really enjoyed that aspect of it as it really makes you think, and I love a book that really engages me intellectually and makes me dig deeper, especially without feeling like I am reading a book that is trying to teach me something. This is definitely a fantasy book, but I thought the concept was really original, and I think that is what kept me engaged. I went through a lot of emotions with Aidan, and I genuinely felt her confusion, as no one is who they seem. That really built suspense and kept me on the edge of my seat with this story, wondering what was going to happen next. If you are a fantasy lover, definitely give this one a read!

Thank you LBT for having me on this book review tour and for my gifted copy of this EPUB.

Umm wow what a book. I can’t believe how good the writing is in this book and how much I loved it.

We follow Aidan a woman who didn’t have it easy and the victim of abuse after she was left on the doorstep of a woman called Aunt Mara after her death though she starts getting these guests that are sent by the the dark Prince. So it’s like satan and he’s telling you can have all this but it’s dark and dangerous and they are just lies and deception but Jesus is the light the protector who will always love you. This is something in my own life I can relate to and am currently struggling with. The author mentioned in the beginning how this book has tires through out the book of Christianity which I loved so much. I wish I could really understand satan because I feel like he just tries to take over and need
him to leave me alone!!!

This was a book that I was highly interested and into and I couldn’t put it down. I had to know what guest was coming next. And the knight’s appearance I was just so waiting for and I truly can’t wait for more.

Firstly thank you very much to the author and Love Book Tours for the opportunity to reading this book in exchange for an honest review.

This was a very unique story, unlike anything I have read before. I really enjoyed the prose that the author used as it really transported into a world like no other. I enjoyed the elements of dark fantasy/romantasy and horror. The story as a whole was completely refreshing as it followed the fmc Aiden and her journey into overcoming the horrors that the dark prince has set upon her.

The story starts off slowly but when it all kicks off, it really picks up. I was flicking through the pages during the early hours of the morning as I wanted to know what was going to happen next. Who is the Dark Prince? Who are the servants that he sets upon Aiden? Who is the knight? What secrets are hidden within the town Hidden?

I found the servants to be one of the most interesting part of the story as it felt like they were connected to Aiden in someway. I am looking forward to seeing how this story unfolds as the ending does leave you on a cliffhanger.

Lies and Deception by Meghan E. McComb

It’s a dark fairytale about a young woman who grows up under the control of her abusive aunt, Mara. When Mara dies, Aidan believes she’s finally free. That freedom doesn’t last long! Strange guests arrive, sent by the Dark Prince. Each one carries a name like Unwanted, Unloved, Lust, and Orphan, and it’s clear they’re meant to prey on her deepest insecurities. She allows them in her home and no matter how many come they all fit in her tiny cottage.

Aidan struggles with what to do with each guest, because some are kind and others are scary. She is being slowly pulled toward the Dark Prince’s trap. In the middle of all that darkness, a white knight gives her a small rose. This is a simple and powerful symbol of hope. That tiny bit of light becomes everything. In the end, it’s the only way she can truly save herself.

3.5⭐️⭐️⭐️✨/5 (due to predictability)

Intriguing, emotional, and hard to put down.

This book kept me hooked from the very first chapter. The story is layered with secrets, tension, and emotional depth, making it an addictive read. Every twist pulled me further in, and I loved how the plot continually unfolded in unexpected ways.

The characters are well developed and compelling, with realistic emotions and relationships that made their struggles feel genuine. The balance between suspense and heartfelt moments was especially well done, giving the story both momentum and heart.

This book delivers a gripping mix of mystery, romance, and drama that keeps you engaged until the end.

Lies and Deception is a solid, enjoyable read that fans of emotional, twist-filled stories will definitely appreciate. Meghan E. McComb has created a story that leaves you eager for more.

“May you be set free from Lies and Deception and fully know The Hope That Never Dies as you embrace with all your heart The One Who Will Love You Forever.”

Lies and Deception is book 1 of The Rose In The Fire duology. The main character, Aidan, allows evil beings into her home (and her heart). These beings are the servants of the Dark Prince. We follow Aidan as she is transparently introduced to the spiritual warfare dwelling within her heart. Meanwhile, Aidan is eagerly in search of The One Who Will Love You Forever.

The character development and world building is steady and methodical, leading you down the path into Aidan’s world. As the reader, you learn of her demons and how she navigates her internal dialogue to cope with them.

A thought provoking book that begs you to empathize with this young woman and all she endures. I don’t want to spoil any part of the plot, but this storyline leaves you on a cliffhanger! Look for Meghan McComb’s second book in The Rose In The Fire series soon.

TW: This is the darkest book of the series with some intense themes and scenes. Read the trigger warnings given by the author in the beginning of the book if you are concerned.

This is my first read by this author and also the first book in The Rose In The Fire series.

I was instantly drawn to this book by the dark and gorgeous front cover image.
It was just so pretty and I love a cover that doesn't give too much away, making me want to find out just what it symbolises.

I really love reading romantasy and this book had everything.

It was a little slow to start, but the pace soon picks up once the world and characters are introduced.

I was intrigued by Aidan and all that she'd had to go through so far and when the 'visitors' start to arrive, I really felt for her.
I liked that we got to delve around in her thoughts and emotions throughout too as this really helped us connect with her and root for her along the way.

There was something magical to this fairy tale and it had me hooked from early on.
I loved the whole idea of, and the romance of the knight giving Aidan the magical white rose and I couldn't wait to find out how things would play out from then.

The writing style was perfect for this genre.
I loved the descriptions of this world and it's characters which made it so easy to form a clear and vivid image in my head - almost as if I'd been sucked into the book and was living in it for a while.

As is common in this genre - and given we knew it was a series - this does end on a cliffhanger, so be prepared!
It has definitely left me wanting more!!
I'm already looking forward to the release of book 2 soon....!

Thank you to the author & LBT for allowing me to tour this series!

This is a fairytale with its own twists. Dark themes are included.
I ploughed through this read, though being a fantasy fairytale-esk read, I didn’t find it hard to go through. I was hooked! If I didn’t have real life adult stuff to do, I’d have finished it in the same day 😅
There were emotional moments (for the main FMC) and sometimes frustration. Emotions that are perfectly fine of course because you want to feel things for a book you’re reading ☺️
Beware! It’s book one, ends on a cliffhanger and you’ll want the next in your hands instantly!

Would I recommend it?
I would yes, but cautiously while making sure it doesn’t trigger them.

I liked this book. It was one that really pulled me in, with the blurb and the genre blends. It really made me think I was going to be reading something both exciting and quite unique.
I found that I connected with Aiden and found that there was so much going on in her life. She had a lot pulling on her and really had a rough start.
I liked the way the author brought the world to life and really gave us a cottage to find as the base of the story. When the rose becomes part of her tale,.this book really takes off and I found that quite enjoyable.
Overall, I found the pace and flow of the story quite interesting and engaging. I liked the details and development of the book overall. It was a good read.

Lies and Deception was an amazing dark romantasy read that blended fantasy with an emotional depth in Aidan’s characterisation. The importance of the Knight reflected patience and protection in contrast to the Dark Prince that caused havoc in her life. I found the white rose symbolic in the sense that hope and power is freely given rather than through suffering, showing a soft connection between Aidan and the Knight.

I love the way each of the ‘visitors’ had names personifying Aidan’s emotional wounds and each are a feeling that she’s previously carried. The moments where she realised why each were staying with her and giving them the key to her heart were important to the storyline, turning it into a deeply internal fantasy book.

P.S. The ending?!?! I need to know what happens next!

I can only describe myself as confused but engaged when I started reading this.
I had questions and more questions arising, I don’t have those answers but that’s the purpose of the book it’s dark and building up suspense whilst the story unfolds.

It’s well written to keep you on the edge of unease because there is not a rush to the plot. At times I just wanted to shake Aidan and scream don’t do it whilst suspiciously questioning everyone because can anyone be trusted.

Ends on a cliff hanger and my scowling face must have been a sight when I realised there were no more pages to read.
I will definitely keep a look out for book 2 release to continue the story

This was a fun and interesting fairy-tale read that sucked me into the story from the very beginning. All of Aidan's thoughts and feelings are so perfectly portrayed in the book along with the various "guests" that come to live with her and I felt like this different type of story telling worked incredibly well! I also enjoyed the world building and descriptions that the author goes into, it made imagining the world, the people and the buildings so much clearer in my head which I love! 😍
I'm very interested to see where the next book will take us on Aidan's journey and how things will change and progress for her! 💕

What a clever and unique story this was! This was beautifully written fantasy/fairy tale with dark notes and you instantly fall in love with the FMC, Aidan, she's so sweet but has been through so much trauma and goes through so much in this book, having had her house occupied by over 100 guests that are not particularly savoury and were not really invited. The characters within this book (without giving away any spoilers) were fantastic, so much thought has gone into this and I loved the hidden meaning behind this story.

The ending left me wanting to know more and follow Aidan’s story further so I am eagerly awaiting book 2

Thanks so much for Love Books Tours and the author for the ARC opportunity. As always, this is an honest, voluntary review.

This was a very interesting, unique dark fantasy book. I don't think I've read anything like it and whilst it wasn't necessarily my cup of tea, I have to say the writing style, the story itself was really well done.

The writing itself pulled me in and I couldn't put the book down once I started it. The characters were interesting and the FMC whilst young and sometimes I really just wanted to shake her, was still likable.

That cliffhanger at the end sure pulls anyone back for book 2! I definitely recommend if you'd like to read something a bit different.

I will say I found this story to be very moving and interesting. I wilk say if you are one of those people who is really into fantasy then this is a story you will definitely need to check out. I will say you really have to feel for Aidan because she didn't exactly have the best life growing up and you would think things would have improved once she got away from her horrible Uncle. However, she ends up in a world where danger is lurking around every corner and with one wrong move could result with her end. I will say I enjoyed reading this book and I most definitely ready for the next book!

Book One of The Rose in the Fire.
This was a really good read. I did like the cover and blurb of this book. It was a little slow to start with. Once I got into this book I couldn't put it down. I did feel for Aidan. I didn't like Asa. I did like lady fairhaven. I was hooked as I wanted to know what happens next. Very cleverly written. I liked the writing style and the story. Wow. I can't wait for the next book.

I love the fantasy elements of the story.
Aidan was someone who went through a lot.
She didn’t deserve anything she was going through. I felt for her. She didn’t grow up with having it easy. It was an addictive read. Imagine being given a single rose from a knight. The rose has these certain powers, the rose may just be Aidans only hope to freedom. I couldn’t put my kindle down.

From the very first page, I was hooked and enjoyed every moment from start to finish. I love a good romantasy, and this one delivered perfectly. Aidan is such a strong, brave character, especially considering everything she has to endure. The knight gifting her the magical rose was a brilliant concept that I absolutely loved. I like how the tension builds throughout between the characters, I never want to give spoilers but I was gutted when it ended on a cliff hanger but I am excited to read more from this world
