Sometimes the long way home is the only way back to yourself.

It’s been twelve long years since I last set eyes on Avery Blake, the only woman I’ve ever loved. She chose a life in the spotlight while I stayed behind, tied to my family’s Montana ranch.

Although she asked me to go with her, my family needed me but I didn’t expect her to cut me off so brutally. I certainly didn’t expect her silence when grief tore me apart.

So, of course, I’m angry.

Hurt, even.

But now she’s back.

My family might forgive her actions, but she’s left scars on my heart that I don’t think will ever heal. There is nothing she says or songs she can sing that will change my mind.

Except, she keeps showing up.

She keeps trying to make things right. She keeps reminding me of all the reasons I loved her. But her career is still there waiting, and my life is still tethered to the ranch.

And the question is, can I ever loosen the reins enough to chase after the one thing that made me happy?

i really wanted to enjoy this one because it had so many aspects that i love: second chance, small town, cowboys, and found family... but it just wasn't executed very well.

i think its hard to read a second chance when it doesn't feel like one. there were no flashback chapters, so the second chance aspect just seemed a little flat and fake. like they just say they dated in the past which doesn't really work for me because in order to support them getting back together, in my opinion, i need to see how much they loved each other and see elements of that past relationship.

greyson, the mmc, was straight up mean. like he was SO RUDE to avery i felt so bad. mean, rude, angry dude. was not a fan

their whole like "rekindling" of their relationship was just them having sex. i honestly have no idea who they are as characters besides greyson being an absolute a-hole. this is also why i needed their backstory because every scene in the book of them together was them having sex or lusting over each other.

thank you to the author and love notes pr for the arc!

3.5🌟, 3 🌶️

This swoony small-town romance hits all the right notes—second chances, found family, and a grumpy cowboy with a heart of gold.

Grayson and Avery’s reunion after twelve years is messy, emotional, and magnetic, with tension that never lets up. Their love story is layered with heartbreak, growth, and undeniable chemistry that leaps off the page.

The Wilde family adds warmth and charm, grounding the story in a cozy, heartfelt setting. With just the right amount of spice and emotional depth, this first book in the Wild Heartland series is perfect for fans of slow-burn, character-driven romance.

If you love stories where love always finds a way, this one’s a must-read.

Wild Roots is a small-town romance with a hint of angst that is about forgiveness, found family, and second chances. Avery and Grayson haven't seen one other in twelve years, and they're definitely still smitten with each other. Avery Blake is a well-known country singer who has lost her spark. Having been away from home for twelve years, she has made the decision to return to Coldwater, Montana, in an attempt to rediscover herself. Since his father's death, Grayson Wilde, who manages his family's ranch, has been putting forth a lot of effort to keep it functioning. The spice and tension in this book were great. Despite their best efforts, Grayson and Avery were unable to keep their distance from one another, which I liked. I truly liked all of the supporting characters including Grayson's siblings. I'm excited to read the next book in the series.

Thank you to K.A James for this e-arc.

✨ARC Review✨

⭐⭐⭐⭐ 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️

This one took me a little to get into, I will be honest! I felt Grayson was too harsh and less grumpy and more arsehole but that being said - I ended up liking this one once he did a 180! The way I ARC review is writing notes as I go, obviously I have to then filter through my notes to make sure they are specific spoiler free. However I think hate/revenge sex is a small trope in second chance romances that I can quote on of my notes here. “Yesssss 👏 hate 👏 fuck 👏 bitches 👏”. Coming away from that point, it has some beautifully written heart-breaking scenes and some moments are that 🥵🥵. The ending was such a sweet way to end the book and I look forward to the next book! I also really loved the cute graphics for Grayson and Avery 😍

A second-chance cowboy x country star romance? Say less 🤭

This cute, wholesome story about second chances and forgiveness, with a sprinkle of angst - perfect to devour in one sitting - is something you don't wanna miss.

First of all, a huge thank you to the author for trusting me with her work and sending me this ARC. Wild Roots was my first book of hers and it definitely won't be my last.

This is how you do cowboy romance correctly! Unlike so many other books in this genre, this one really focuses on ranching, showing both the good and bad aspects of living and working on a ranch. I can't tell you how much I appreciate that. That, plus a heart-rendering love story? Needless to say, I finished it in one sitting.

It's been twelve years since Avery and Grayson last saw each other, and they're clearly still hung up on each other. The tension and years that have passed between them make this a bittersweet and nostalgic affair - forgiveness is hard to come by - and I'm here for it. Despite the conflict, especially at the very start, this book has all the fluffy feelings you could ask for, and makes you feel right at home. I loved observing the characters' dynamics and seeing how Avery and Grayson's decision-making and priorities have changed over the last twelve years. Their growth and maturity was touching to observe.

I'm completely invested in the Wilde family and can't wait for more books about them!!

What to expect;
-famous country singer x billionaire cowboy
-high school sweethearts
-small town romance
-supportive family
-second chance

Firstly, thanks for KA James and LoveNotes Pr for this arc. This book packed quite the punch for being such a quick read, I found it hard to put down. This story nails the vibe of second chances and forgiveness, with just the right amount of angst thrown in!

Grayson’s story is the heart of this book. His grief, anger and love are so tangled, and the way James unpacks that heartbreak had me hooked. Watching him learn to be vulnerable while Avery finds her independence made such a sweet, emotional ride. I absolutely loved both of them, their chemistry is so palpable and you just knew these two are meant to be.

The ranch setting is gorgeous, James really shows you the ups and downs of life on a farm. Graysons siblings add a lot of fun to the mix, making the Wilde family feel like one you want to know more about. I can’t wait to see what’s next.

This book gave me all the second-chance feels, the kind that sting, ache, and then slowly stitch your heart back together. Twelve years apart leaves a lot of resentment, and you could feel every ounce of it between these two. I loved how the Montana ranch setting grounded the story against Avery’s music career, making their worlds clash in such a believable way.

The angst was heavy, but it never drowned out the hope. Watching them slowly peel back the layers of anger, hurt, and misunderstanding to find the love that was still buried there? Whew. It was equal parts frustrating and beautiful.

If you love small-town romance, deep scars, family ties, and second chances that make you believe in love all over again, this one hits the mark.

This story had a lot of potential. As a huge fan of second chances and found family tropes, I was genuinely excited to start reading it.

Unfortunately, I couldn’t really feel the chemistry between the main characters. I know they were together before-it’s mentioned a few times/but there are no flashbacks or deeper moments that show what their relationship used to be like. Even at 55% in, I still felt disconnected from their emotional side. There were a few emotional scenes. However they didn’t make me feel their chemistry.

For me, the reunion felt more physical than emotional- I felt more sexual chemistry than emotional connection. Overall, it’s a story with a good idea and the tropes I truly enjoy but not developed enough to reach its full potential.

Thank you very much KA James for the ARC opportunity 🩷

Excited to have received an ARC copy of this! I liked both of our MMCs individually. I almost wish the book was a little longer though. I feel like we got small glimpses into each of their individual characters and a tiny bit of their relationship. With the initial conflict being Avery’s career I wish we’d gotten more in-depth about both their motivations for staying away from each other for so long. Also I know it was mentioned but hearing more about what Avery’s life was like in Nashville and how that contributed to her slightly toxic relationship with her manager. And of course I always love getting little relationship moments with the characters. Overall, I liked the book I just would’ve loved for both the individual characters and their relationship to be fleshed out a little more.

first of all I'd like to say that im giving this book 3 stars not because I dont like it, but because it didnt have the "oh my god" factor (for me) and I didnt get TOO invested in the story. It was an amazing book showing how relationships change, how they don't change/stay, and forgiveness, which is all very good. Reading this book felt like reading a good yet regular romance book and that might be because I didnt forgive her but he did which made me a bit mad/annoyed (because I hold grudges so I cant relate) but that might just be someone's cup of tea. The writing is good and everything is good about this book just as I said it didnt have the "oh my god" factor - for me.

**ARC Read**

This book was super cute and I’m so grateful for being chosen to be an ARC reader for this book.

Small town- second chance romance with all the spice!
This book was short and I think that is my main complaint. At just over 200 pages it made the story line super fast paced and a lot of things were rushed and not as descriptive or impactful as they could have been.
I think if there was maybe 100-150 more pages, the come back and redemption arc could have been written in way that made us readers feel more.
The story line was great, the main characters and side characters were lovable and enjoyable and the small town vibe definitely hit.
Overall I really enjoyed it and think the author wrote this well, just wish there had been a little more to it.

This book was so sweet and comforting and just a good read all around. I fell for both the main characters and what they had gone through. The way they were determined not to repeat history was beautiful, and it shows the power of forgiveness and true love. Witnessing Greyson let down his walls and allow his brothers to help was heartwarming as was watching Avery stand up for herself and go for what she wanted. I really enjoyed it. I look forward to book two in the series.

This story is a sweet tale of second chance love. It does have a few spicy parts but for the most part is a wholesome story of two high school sweethearts separated by 12 years and life choices. I enjoyed it but it might be a little too vanilla for me to love it. Still worth the short read though.

Buckle up - you're in for a treat with this second-chance, swoon-y, cowboy x country music star romance!

Wild Roots was overall a great read. I really enjoyed reading the rekindling of the decade+ separation and romance between Avery and Greyson and what had first drew them apart really brought them back together. I loved the small-town side characters of Coldwater, and Greysons family as well! The spice was also spicin', which only intensified the passion these characters had for each other.

So thankful to have received this ARC from Love Notes PR and KA James.

Avery comes back to town for a short break from her singing career before her tour begins. Grayson has taken over the family ranch and the last thing he wants is to run into his ex. When her stay ends up being longer than he expected, the tension between them starts to build. It was so much fun watching their relationship spark back to life, especially with the way he is so gentle and protective with her.
I really loved the bond she shared with his family. It was so strong that they welcomed her back with open arms, while he stayed more guarded. Seeing the way their love still ran deep after all that time apart was such a beautiful part of the story. I loved the ending to this book and can’t wait for the next one!

ARC Review, thankyou to Lovenotes PR and the author for the chance to read this story

2/5⭐ It was fine.
Wild Roots by KA James had a promising premise but it kind of fell flat for me, and it felt kind of 🌶️ heavy which isn't for me but if you that's your thing you'll probably like this book.
I didn't feel connected to or invested in the characters and didn't really feel or see the love they supposedly had or still have for each other, like they just say they've dated in the past which doesn't give my anything.
Their whole "rekindling" of their relationship was just them having sex, instead of talking about it like adults.

And Greyson was lowkey kind of an ass.

Halfway through this book I was completely over them, all they did was fck and lust over each other. I feel like this book could've been cut in half and it wouldn't have made much of a difference. They also mentioned some tension between Greyson's family and some other people and then it was never brought up again.

In short if you're looking for an easy to read, smut filled and drama free book you'll probably love this.

4.5 ⭐️ This book packed quite the punch for being such a quick read!! It was really hard to put down. The angst in this was to d!e for 🪭 and when the spice hit it was ‘chef’s kiss’🔥
I absolutely loved Greyson and Avery, their chemistry was so palpable and you just knew these two were meant to be together. The circumstances that kept them apart ….💔
This book is what second chance romances strive to be. There’s still hurt there, but still so much love between them. Setting aside the hurt, talking and working to start over knowing you’re older and wiser ❤️

I only wish it was longer so we could see them for those 12 months before the epilogue (if you read it you know, trying not to spoil it)

I absolutely devoured this book in less than 48 hours and left no crumbs!

Avery Blake is a famous country singer who has lost her spark. She has decided to come home to Coldwater, Montana, after twelve years to try and find herself again. The thing is there is a grumpy cowboy back home that she left behind to chase her dreams and she hasn't quit gotten over him.

Grayson Wilde runs his family's ranch and has been work hard to keep things running every since his father passed. He has not let anyone get close to him after the one girl that he loved left him to chase her dreams. Well that girl is back in town. His family has forgiven her for her actions, but she has left scars on his heart that he doesn't think will ever heal. The problem is, she keep showing up. She keeps reminding him why he loved her and why he still does.

Can Grayson loosen the reins enough to chase after the one thing that makes him happy or will he let her walk out of his life for a second time?

Let me tell you, I was hooked from the very beginning. Second chance romance, check. Cowboy x country singer, check.

This story is about second chances and forgiveness, with a sprinkle of angst! The spice and the tension in this book was so good! I loved how Grayson and Avery both pinned for each other and no matter how hard they tried, they could not stay away.

I really enjoyed the ranching aspect of this book. I felt that James did a great job with this setting and showing the good and bad aspects of living and working on a ranch. I really enjoyed all the side characters and Grayson's siblings. They definitely helped make this story come alive. I am completely invested in the Wilde family and can't wait to keep reading about them!!!

This is a heart-rendering love story that will have you captivated and swooning from the very beginning!

Read if you like:
-Second chance romance
-Grumpy cowboy x country singer
-Small town vibes
-High school sweethearts
-Supportive family
-Billionaire MMC

"Wild Roots"

Wild Heartlands # 1

by KA James

Set in Montana, this small-town romance is so beautiful.

It follows Grayson and Avery. And their second chance to find their lost, but never forgotten, Love of their lives.

Grayson is a grumpy hardworking cowboy, older brother of 4 that too soon became the owner of a billionaire ranch as their father died.
Avery is a successful country singer that 12 years ago made the hard decision to leave their small town behind and head to Nashville to try to start her singing career.

Reading the scenes where cowboys work in the ranch fields is like watching a movie.
The author writes from the heart and that notices chapter after chapter.
And their love feels real and right. So right.

Thank you to the author and the Smuthood for this ARC.

---

some my favorite quotes:

"This land doesn't break a cowboy, it makes him."

(..)but the truth is, I think I'm far too lost to ever be found.

"Avery's back." My chest tightens to the point of pain

It's in my blood, in my bones, even if losing her ripped the soul from my body.

I think about her in the lonely hours, and there are far too many of those once work on the ranch is done.

And then, across the bar like a bee drawn to pollen, I see him.

"Stop trying to fix me because I'm beyond repair."

There's something about Montana that feels different, almost soothing.

I've never found someone that made me burn for them like I did for her.

Like Avery Blake didn't just rip every wound I've worked so damn hard to cover up right back open.

Grayson's everywhere, and all I've been able to think about since I crossed the town limits.

He calls to me like the Montana mountains, and I'm powerless to resist.

Her lips feed from mine, like she's been starving for this for as long as I have.

Sliding into her feels like coming home.

"Neither of us are running from this, Ave. Not anymore."

This was a lovely, quick read. One that was filled with so much love and family bonding. It was a cute second chance, small town, cowboy romance.

Avery "Ave" Blake, is a small town girl from Coldwater, Montana who ventured out to Nashville in the hopes of pursuing her dreams of becoming a country singer. While it may have seemed like she had everything (the fans, the fame, the tours), there was something missing. Therefore, she comes back home to Coldwater to find herself.

I loved how she pursued her dreams. I thought it was really brave of her, even though it meant she had to leave her family and friends behind.

Grayson "Gray" Wilde is a cowboy who is extremely family oriented. He runs the Wild Heartlands Ranch, where his brothers also work. At first, when Avery comes back after 12 years, Gray is hurt, understandably. While I didn't like his attitude in the beginning, I got where he was coming from. Yes, he could have handled it better, but I am really glad he was eventually able to move past it. I think a lot of it had to do with the thought of being abandoned by and losing her all over again. I admired how gentle and caring he was with Avery, yet rough at the same time!

The side characters were great! How they looked out for Grayson, yet they still loved Avery and welcomed her back. They really did have their best interests at heart.

There was one character I completely loathed. A meddling, cold hearted liar who purposefully kept them apart. I loved how it ended.

While I enjoyed this book, I think it could have been longer and filled with more backstory, and yearning. There was a lot of potential and I would have liked to have seen what the main characters were like 12 years ago, when they were first together. If you are looking for a light, cosy read, this is the book for you.

Many thanks to the wonderful author KA James, and Love Notes PR for this advanced reader copy.

What to expect:
🥰 Second Chance
🏡 Small Town
🎵 Country Music Star x Cowboy

This was my first novel by James and I was blown away. I honestly was a bit nervous because second chance romances for me are a big hit or miss, mostly ended up missing, but these characters could make me love just about any story.
Avery is trying to find herself again with a much needed trip back home and Grayson has been in their small town trying to work himself into forgetting everything he wished he still had. The tension between these two from the star was infectious. No matter what was happening they couldn't help but look for each other.
Avery and Grayson both knew they were the loves of each others lives and no matter how short their time could end up being together it was worth it to have just a bit more of that spark. No divine intervention could have kept these two apart, and everything and everyone should have been trying to push them back together.
Grayson is all man and damn do I need to find me a cowboy, maybe I can snag one for the brothers before they get the HEAs.
The only thing that would have made this perfect would have been more flashbacks. They both described memories, but actually flashback scenes would have really solidified what they had in the past. Also I wish there was another epilogue showing a bit further into the future...but I am holding out hope that these two continues to make appearances in future Wild Heartlands novels.
Favorite Quotes:
"The land doesn't break a cowboy, it makes him."
"I'm supposed to be reconnecting with myself, finding my muse again, and falling in love with my music. Not thinking about the boy I left behind. Or the man he's become."
"Who needs to breathe when you have the love of your life in your arms and they are feeding on your soul?"
"I wish it could be like this for the rest of our lives. Just her and me, building something out of all the broken pieces we've carried these past twelve years, one quiet night at a time."

“Whatever is happening between us, the feelings I had for Grayson Wilde all those years ago haven’t gone away. I doubt they ever will”.

12 years ago, Avery Blake left her small town of Coldwater, Montana to peruse her dreams of being a singer. But lately, her song writing ability and her once happiness to perform are fading. Avery makes the decision to return to Coldwater to find herself and her lyrics again. Home wasn’t the only thing she left behind all those years ago, the man she loved stayed and now she’s faced with the choice she had made to leave. She still loves him but does he still love her too?

Grayson Wilde is a hard working rancher that does everything he can to provide for his families ranch and give his siblings the lives they want. Because the one PERSON he really wanted walked away from him and never looked back. Avery left him painfully heartbroken and no matter how hard he tried, that pain never really went away. Now after 12 long years, she’s back in their hometown and no matter where he is, she’s there. He’s still angry at her for leaving but a part of him is still in love with her. This time around, can they mend what could have been or will Avery break his heart for a second time?

Wild Roots by KA James was a great second chance romance read! I loved the plot of the story and thought that the length of it was perfect for the way KA James told it. Although it broke my heart at times, especially with the way Grayson lived with their breakup, it also gave me butterflies as well as making me giddy for any scene between Avery and Grayson. Especially the spicy ones!! Wild Roots is a really good book and definitely one that needs to be read if you like…… second chance, grumpy cowboy, spicy, HEA, country singer FMC and a small town setting.

Twelve years apart, but the roots never died.” 🌾🎶

I could not put this book down—I devoured it in one sitting. If you love second chance romance, small-town charm, and a cowboy who never stopped loving his girl, Wild Roots will sweep you away. Avery, the country singer who chased her dreams, and Grayson, the cowboy tied to his Montana ranch, are thrown back together after more than a decade apart. Their chemistry is undeniable—it’s always been you vibes written all over it—and I loved watching Avery wrestle with whether she was too far lost to be found.

What worked for me:
🤠 A cowboy in jeans, crisp white tee, and a Stetson (yes, please).
❤️ Grayson’s devotion to his family and the ranch.
🏡 The way everyone in town welcomed Avery home (Gracie & Autumn’s energy was the best!).
👨‍👩‍👧 Sibling banter that sets up perfectly for future books—I already can’t wait for them.
🎤 Avery’s journey to rediscover herself and ask if home is still where her heart belongs.

The spice? 🌶️🌶️ Just right for this story. And the unhinged micro-tropes delivered—
👅he licks her off his fingers 👀
🐰he refuses buckle bunnies for YEARS waiting for her 💔
❤️‍🔥their intimacy feels both tender & fiery

My biggest complaint? I wanted more Avery & Grayson. The story left me smiling, but I wished it had been longer so I could stay in their world a bit more. Fingers crossed they pop up again in future books. This book could be your next read if you loved Elsie Silver’s Chestnut Springs series.

Wild Roots is a small town, cowboy, second chance romance. I loved everything about this story.
Grayson and Avery was a couple in love. Everything was right in there little world. Except Avery had big dreams. Dreams about being a musician, and those dreams meant she needed to leave town. She asked Grayson to come with her but his family needed him and he couldn't just up and leave. So she left him behind to follow her dreams. But now she's back and once they see each other they realize they still have so much feelings for each other but Grayson has his reservations about her, because if he goes all in with her again, he won't be able to let her go, and the biggest question of all is, will she leave again?
I think what made me enjoy this story so much was the level of maturity these characters had! There was no doubt about what they wanted. They knew what they wanted and went for it. They had grown and learned from their past and accounted for what the possibilities of the future could hold and planned accordingly. It was refreshing to read characters that were mature, level headed, and planned ahead. No unnecessary drama just for the sake of a story. Grayson is an absolute sweetheart and I loved the strength his character carried, for all that he was doing for the ranch and for his family. He was rude to her at first, but I understand his reasonings. Trust me, he wasn't wrong, I was in his shoes once. They didn't handle things well immediately upon return, but he knew it was wrong and made up for it.
This story was well done. I connected with all the characters. The plot was intriguing and kept me hooked. I enjoyed this so much! I can't wait for the next one!!!

Spice: 1.5/5

Grayson Wilde
Age 35
Head of his family’s ranch (took over when his father was diagnosed with an illness)
Based in Coldwater, Montana (population 543)
Close with his family
Spends his days doing manual labor on the farm doing his best not to think about HER
Angry that Avery left and didn’t come back or keep in touch, even after he reached out to her

Avery Blake
Age 35
Chart topping Country Music Artist
Based in Nashville, Tennessee
Home: Coldwater, Montana
She’s lost her mojo, coming home to hopefully find herself again
Has a deadline to meet
Not certain her dream is still her dream
Angry that Grayson didn’t follow her when she begged him to and the fact that he never reached out to her (or so she was lead to believe)

These high schools sweethearts have not seen each other in twelve years. The moment they lock eyes, you feel the spark along with the underlying anger. Avery thaws a little faster than grumpy, stubborn Grayson. It’s magic when they both give in to what they know is still there.

This book packs a punch for 200 pages. Great depth of characters, loved the “working” ranch and Grayson’s family as well as the atmosphere of the town.

No 3rd act breakup. Definitely HEA. Don’t miss out on the bonus epilogue.

Thanks to KA James and The Smuthood for the opportunity to read and review an advanced reader copy as well as discover another “new to me” author. I’ve preordered this book as well the next book in this series.

🌶️🌶️🌶️ 3/5 Spice

Second chance romance is genuinely one of my favorite tropes, and this book really delivered.
When Avery left their small town chasing her dream of making music, she also left behind Grayson, the love of her life. Years later, she's burnt out and comes home, only to find Grayson still nursing old wounds from their messy breakup. The tension when they see each other again? You can practically feel how angry and hurt they both still are, but there's also this pull between them that never went away.

What I loved most was watching both characters grow throughout the story. Avery rediscovers her passion for music and learns to advocate for herself. Grayson learns to let go of some control and trust the people around him. Both of them had to do some real work on themselves before they could make things work together, and I appreciated that.

The emotions felt genuine, and I found myself rooting for them to figure things out. At 202 pages, it's a quick read with some sweet moments and solid spice. The epilogue was the cherry on top.

A few minor issues: Georgia being introduced as Gray's mom in Chapter 12 when she was already introduced prior to that, and I wished we got more backstory on the depth of Grayson's anger about their past. But overall, this was a satisfying small-town romance with heart.

Perfect for fans of second chance romance, small town settings, and emotional character growth.

Tropes: Second Chance, Small Town, Country Music Star x Cowboy
CW: Parental death, toxic work relationship, burnout
