But when her bold crusade places her directly in danger, Hawk is forced closer than either of them intended.

Married to the same man for over 25 years, I am a mother to three children and two Miniature Wiener dogs.

After owning a business and experiencing considerable success, my husband and I got caught in the financial crisis and lost everything in 2008; our business, our home, even our car.

At this point, I put my B.A. in Poly Sci to use and took work as a waitress and bartender (Insert irony). Unwilling to give up on a professional life, I simultaneously went back to college and obtained a degree in Energy Management.

And then the energy market dropped off.

And then my dog died.

I can only be grateful for this series of unfortunate events, for, with nothing to lose and completely demoralized, I sat down and began to write the romance novels which had until then, existed only my imagination.
After publishing over twenty novels now, with one having been nominated for RWA’s Distinguished ™RITA Award in 2019, I am happy to tell you that I have finally found my place in life.

fabulous

I really enjoyed this and was glad I had read the previous book first. I thought it well paced and though there was some steam it wasn’t unnecessary explicit which I think enhanced the romance. Would definitely recommend

Unsurprisingly, she’s done it again! The Baron’s Open Arms is another rich, witty, and complex romance from the incomparable Annabelle Anders.

This book was a wonderful combination of push and pull as both Beatrice and Gideon gripped their own end of the rope.

Beatrice, sharp and determined, grates at the perfection of Gideon’s propriety and honor. Gideon, with his stoic disposition and quiet grief, wishes to protect Beatrice from the dangers of the ton and her own obscured past. Together, the two make quite a pair - two stubborn, unyielding, brave souls who begin to share a love deeper and hungrier than they ever anticipated.

I absolutely loved the dynamic between Gideon and Beatrice. Their dialogue is infused with chemistry, and their love unfurls very naturally throughout the book. They have the perfect balance of similarities and differences to imitate a genuine relationship.
There are soft moments — joining an archery contest, rowing along the Thames — that provide the foundation and trust for the harder times — facing Beatrice’s trauma, confronting Gideon’s guilt. And let’s not forget about the spicy moments, too, which are equally as rooted in the characters’ development.

The pacing was excellent, and I didn’t feel like the story lagged at any point. The plot never suffered from filler content; every chapter revealed a new aspect of Beatrice and Gideon’s lives. I find that I always have a sense of confidence and ease when reading Anders’ books; her skill as a writer is so refined that I know I can watch the story unfold without fear of dwelling on unnecessary content. This book was no exception.

I also loved the entwinement of their stories with Dash’s! Having adored The Duke That I Lost, it was such a treat to witness another perspective beyond the scope of Ambrosia’s garden ;)

I do wish trigger warnings were more readily available regarding Beatrice’s history of sexual assault. While Beatrice’s trauma is never graphically or explicitly depicted, I think it would be helpful for readers to have an insight into the extent that the SA is discussed. As an SA survivor myself, I found Beatrice’s story incredibly cathartic and necessary, but I wish I had known what to expect going in so I could prepare mentally.

Overall, this was another incredible read by Anders, and as always, I can’t wait to see what comes next! I look forward to uncovering Lord Longstaffe and Lady Persephone’s story in Don’t Stop Believing in the Viscount. If only April weren’t so far away…

Thank you to Annabelle and her team for sending me an ARC in exchange for an honest review! All thoughts and opinions are entirely my own.

Title: The Baron’s Open Arms (Scoundrels with Secrets Book 2)
Author: Annabelle Anders

There was no other option for me, but to give Beatrice and Gideon a freaking awesome five star read. If Goodreads’s had a ten star category Unequivocally, I would have given this story one. Hands down. Wow, what a story. I am thoroughly invested in reading the next book in this series.
The plot twist and should I say it?! Mystery cliff hanger has me sitting on pins and needles, wondering how this part of the series will be played out. This story is such an amazing one to take the time to read. I took my time and in some way I was able to really connect with the characters Gideon and Beatrice points of views. Speaking of the two, I thought that the slow courtship between the two was simply perfect.
Never have I felt so excited for two people to finally come to realize their feelings for one another. And might I say, Gideon was a bad main male character at all. This man had everything a woman of his time was looking for. I enjoyed reading Beatrice and Gideon’s path to love. It was truly divine.
The writing of the characters seemed to make the book come so alive. Might I also add that the writing is so, so bloody brilliant. I’m truly impressed by the creativity of the story. I had a great time of being entertained with the story of finding love. Grief from a friend/brother.
The mystery shadow who’s hidden in plain sight. As well as, the ladies who worked so hard at being validated and standing up for themselves. Ohhh and did I mention the steamy, sizzling, sweet and steamy desires of orgasmic release was exhilarating? Yep! They were that and so much more.
Thats why I give this vivacious book two snaps and a golden twist. Until next time my fellow readers. Read on! I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Annabelle Anders has done it again! She threw out all of the emotions into this story.

Beatrice is determined to protect every young lady in the ton from becoming a victim of something other than ruin.. because she knows what it's like to not be protected and to be blamed for something she didn't ask for. However

Gideon her brother's best friend sees the danger she's putting herself in and he is determined to protect her from herself even if she doesn't want his help or his protection.. but he has promised his best friend he will look after her however she might need protection from him after all he feels things for her he shouldn't..

Gideon and Beatrice agree to help each other with lessons of self defense and protection but what started out as just lessons and friendship turns into something so much more than that, and it comes to be so much more important to either of them..

This book is filled with laughter, angst, danger, and love..

I can't wait to read the next book from Annabelle Anders.

I received a complimentary ARC of this book from the author. This in no way affected my opinion of this book which I read and reviewed voluntarily.

I liked Beatrice and Gideon together. I thought they made a good couple. The intimacy is good.
I do think this is a stand alone but I think it would be better if you read the first book in the series prior as it is referenced here and you can understand Dash a bit more cause he felt very unlikable in this book to me. I liked her group of friends that she brings together for self defense lessons, I always enjoy strong female friendship.
SA against our FMC is discussed on page multiple times. I just didn't find that enjoyably. All of it felt realistic, this woman didn't want to feel like a victim anymore so she wants to find ways to feel empowered and capable of keeping herself and others safe. She discusses the fear and how it made her retreat for a time. I thought that was all handled well.

However, I don't know why cause this doesn't usually bother me, I just really didn't feel engaged with that. Also, some of the thoughts were quite repetitive. When he was thinking about his attraction to her, he kept mentioning the same three things in the same order.

Annabelle Anders is one of the authors on my "favorite authors" list. I love her writing style. She has great stories and good sex. I’ve read 54 of her books and have been reading her since 2018.

OMG I loved Gideon. I loved how caring but controlled he was. I loved Beatrice's fierce independence, even sometimes at her detriment. This book was such a great read. I loved this storyline and the characters. Gideon and Beatrice was so good together. I also loved how well all the secondary characters were written. I know two of those characters will be in the next book but not all authors write those minor characters as well as I noticed here. This time you already have a good feel of their personalities and I can't wait. Overall this was really a great read. Can't wait for Book 3.

Beatrice Beckman has proudly declared herself a spinster, and she’s thriving. After one disastrous season five years ago, she fled to the countryside, regrouped, and has now returned to London with a new calling; protecting naïve debutantes from the Ton’s worst wolves. She’s basically running a Regency-era vigilante program, armed only with determination, a slender bodkin (knife) and a complete lack of self-preservation knowledge.

Enter Gideon Rothmore, Baron Hawkins, her brother’s best friend, and newly returned protector who immediately realizes Beatrice is about three seconds from getting herself killed. Naturally, he decides he must intervene. Naturally, she hates this. Gideon’s bossy “I know better” energy crashes directly into Beatrice’s “absolutely not” attitude, and the sparks fly in every direction.

After a garden incident that nearly turns catastrophic, Gideon swoops in like an overprotective knight with excellent timing. This leads to the two of them agreeing on self-defense lessons, which Beatrice resents, argues about, and eventually (begrudgingly) admits she needs. Their slow burn is delicious - full of bickering, stubbornness, accidental swooning, and the kind of chemistry that refuses to stay politely in the background.

Annabelle Anders delivers another charming, witty romance with a great supporting cast and a continuing thread in the Scoundrels with Secrets series that keeps inching toward the bigger mystery. Beatrice is a menace, in the best way; Gideon is absolutely gone for her, and watching them collide, clash, and fall is pure entertainment. I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC of this book, and all thoughts and opinions are my own.

The Baron’s Open Arms by Annabelle Anders is book two in the Scoundrels with Secrets series. I really enjoyed this story. With the passage of six months between the first two books, I decided to read them in tandem to refresh my memory, and I’m so glad I did. I began with The Duke I Lost and, around chapter twenty-one, I switched to The Baron’s Open Arms. Then I pivoted back and forth between the two books. I found this to be a fabulous way of taking in the timeline of the story. Anders is a master storyteller, and she weaves romance, intrigue, sorrow, and joy all through her books. The Baron’s Open Arms is about Beatrice Beckman, the sister of the Duke of Dasborough from The Duke I Lost, and the duke’s best friend Lord Gideon Rothmore, Baron Hawkins. I think Hawk is one of my favorite characters. Quiet, steady, and handsome, Hawk has been there for the duke since they were children, and he has always been kind to Beatrice. Beatrice’s character was a little harder to like. She is obstinate and at times blind to how her actions affect others. Underneath the romance, there are delightful side characters and a mystery that still hasn’t been revealed. There are a few steamy scenes. Overall, it is a delightful romance.

This book was such a wonderful read! I thoroughly enjoyed it. I did not want to stop reading until I finished it. The plot is so well written and the characters are so interesting. Although it is not necessary to read the first book in this series, which is about the brother of the fmc in this book I do think that reading it will give more depth to the plot of this story and the first book is also a fantastic read as well. The two books are written on the same timeline but just written from her point of view.

Baron Hawkins, Gideon Ruthmore and Lady Beatrice Beckman have known each other for years. He is the childhood friend of her brother, the now Duke of Dashborough, known as Dash, who is the main character in the first book.
Dash is distracted by his own romantic interest during this social season in London that he has brought Beatrice to so asks Gideon to look out for Beatrice for him. Gideon agrees, he hasn’t seen her in years due to being away for school and then travelling. He finds himself distracted by her now she has grown up. She has always been independent and fiery and he quickly realises she has attended this season not to find a husband like all the other young women in society are but has other reasons that could put her in danger. He feels that he has to protect her on Dash’s behalf so agrees to help her by teaching her techniques to use to keep her safer. Beatrice wants to share her lessons with her friends and agree to form a secret alliance. As Gideon and Beatrice spend time together they realise that they now don’t think of each other as they did years ago and they become more than just his best friend’s younger sister and her brother’s best friend. Gideon accidentally finds out a dark secret that Beatrice has kept for years and becomes more protective of her, even wanting to tell Dash; something she deeply resents. The two share some very humorous quips but also argue as Beatrice knows her own mind and doesn’t want to be controlled. The couple are made for each other, they just don’t know it at the beginning but they find their way throughout the story. Both learn about themselves and each other about how to deal with their emotions and situations involving their growing romance.

There are side plots, one about a nefarious man who is trying to take something that isn’t his that Gideon tries to stop and Dash’s romantic woes added even more interest to the story. There’s a loyal group of friends of both Beatrice and Gideon that are a joy to read and really add to the storyline.
This book was more than just a love story, it’s much more. There’s a great epilogue that I always love reading in a book.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a humorous slow burn but high heat later in the book love story with a great plot and lots of lovely characters.

This book didn’t immediately captivate me in the first few chapters, but it gradually drew me in and I found myself unable to put it down. We meet Lady Beatrice at a ball, where she’s on the lookout for young women who might be taken advantage of by seemingly charming men. Her motivations are clear, but the reader remains unaware of them. She has a loyal friend and ally in Lark, who used to be her companion and now works with Beatrice’s cousin. Beatrice’s older brother, Dash, the Duke of Dasborough, should be there with her, but he’s trying to earn the forgiveness of the woman he loves. His oldest friend, Baron Gideon Hawkins, is also present but feels disillusioned by society’s repetitive cycles. He notices Beatrice and discreetly follows her, witnessing her seemingly innocent interruption of a debutant with an ill-intentioned gentleman who’s trying to isolate her on the terrace before she returns the young lady to her mother. This prompts him to wonder what the always intelligent and determined younger sister of his best friend is up to. And the seeds of the forbiddenly fall in love with your brother’s best friend trope are sown.

This book is definitely more complex. Hidden secrets lurk within both Beatrice and Gideon, but that’s not all. Beatrice is driven by a desire to empower young women to protect themselves and each other. Her skills in archery and knife throwing are impressive, but she wants other young ladies to feel equally confident. When Gideon suspects her intentions, he offers to teach her new skills. Threats loom over them both for different reasons, and they carry dark pasts that impact them in various ways. Initially, they resist the slow-burn romance, worried about Dash’s reaction, but the undeniable pull between them becomes clear. I appreciated the author’s careful handling of their prior traumas, demonstrating how they can linger into later years. The writing is well-crafted, with main characters who grow through questioning their beliefs and gently encouraged to see things from different perspectives. While romance is central, there are also great supporting characters, and I believe two of them will appear in the next book of the series. I haven’t read the previous book in the series however I’ll definitely add it to my TBR list.

An ARC of this book was generously provided to me by the author, and I freely offer this review.

This was such a wonderful story.
It was a book that I took my time reading because it was so touching and emotional. There was a lot of depth to the plot.

Beatrice Beckman has returned for the season after yrs being away. She has no interest in marriage. She has returned to protect this season's young ladies from the dangers lurking within the ton, they have more at risk than just ruin - she is determined to prevent them from being hurt, as she was.

Beatrice is a headstrong, independent lady, she will not let anything get in the way from doing what she feels she must do, not even her brother or his best friend Gideon.

Gideon Rothmore "Hawk" has been best friends with the Duke of Dasborough, "Dash" since they were young.
Dash is distracted this season with his own problems, he is not interacting with society, he is not protecting or escorting his sister Beatrice to functions and has asked Gideon to watch out for her.

Gideon knows he has his hands full, he's well aware of Bea's fiery side, he's drawn to it and he gladly agrees to help Dash - especially after he see's her get involved in a situation with aiding a young lady in trouble.

He is determined more than ever to help and protect her as she had put herself at risk!

Beatrice isn't interested in Gideon protecting her or getting in her way, so he decides the best way to keep her safe is to teach her how to protect herself.

Once her lessons commence and they start spending more time together alone, sparks start to fly but more so, the normal affection they had for one another starts growing into something far deeper.

The lines start to blur between these two very quickly and Gideon turns into the one person Beatrice trusts and trusts enough with her dark secret.

I loved their story, the dynamics of their relationship and how it developed from friends into lovers in the perfect way with the perfect pace.

They had a beautiful relationship. They listened to each other and supported one another through past trauma, new hurts, and new fears.

They did it together. Equals.

This story had it all. Mature relationships with no unnecessary drama's, supportive friendships, side stories, and even an ongoing mystery.

He was her brother’s closest friend. She was never meant to be his.

The Baron’s Open Arms is the second book in Annabelle Anders’ Scoundrels with Secrets series, and it is another truly enchanting story. If you enjoy the brother’s-best-friend, forbidden-sister trope, this is a must-read.

Beatrice Beckman has no interest in marriage after being hurt during her debutante season and has spent the last five years away from society. Now she returns with a mission: to protect vulnerable young women from unscrupulous men and help them preserve their reputations.

Gideon Rothmore, Baron Hawkins, places loyalty above all else—especially to his closest friend. When his best friend Dash asks him to watch over Beatrice, Gideon agrees, thinking he is merely doing a favor. However, watching Beatrice quickly becomes more complicated than he expected. As he observes her fearlessly placing herself in dangerous situations to help other young women, he realizes she could use guidance. Although Beatrice bristles at his interference, she reluctantly agrees to let him teach her how to better defend herself.

Once they begin working together, the slow-burn romance blooms. Gideon has always admired Beatrice’s spirited nature, and he soon confronts the truth of his feelings, torn between love and his loyalty to her brother. Their chemistry is electric, their banter delightful, and Gideon’s journey toward accepting Beatrice for who she is—without trying to control her—is deeply satisfying.

This is a heartfelt and beautifully written tale of forbidden love, filled with emotional depth and sparkling wit. Annabelle Anders crafts a compelling journey of passion, loyalty, and self-discovery, culminating in a resolution that is as moving as it is joyous. By the end, I found myself smiling, sighing, and even shedding a tear. The Baron’s Open Arms is a gem in this series, and I can’t wait for the next installment.

A tender, emotional, and utterly captivating romance that fans of historical love stories will adore. Highly recommend.

DISCLAIMER: I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book! It did start off slow for me, but I think maybe it was because I didn’t read the first book and hadn’t know about the ordeal with Beatrice’s brother (who is the hero in Book 1.) Once I was around the 25% mark though, I was hooked and couldn’t put it down!

I loved Beatrice’s character. I really felt for her and I loved how protective she was of the other women, especially unsuspected debutantes. She’s such a strong character and I loved that she refused to be told to stop, even if it meant breaking her own heart in the process.

I loved Gideon’s character. I loved how he watched out for Beatrice and the relationship he had with Dash (Beatrice’s brother) and his other friends who I think are the future heroes in the subsequent books in this series. I kind of didn’t like how he reacted when he found out why Beatrice was so protective of other girls, but I also understood him too.

I felt like the ball was dropped a little at the end with not getting a resolution of Beatrice’s trauma story, even though she seemed to have put it behind her. But I also think that it showed her growth too, that she wasn’t letting that past incident have power over her anymore. It might also be a part of the overarching plotline that was hinted at throughout this book, so Annabelle may very well be saving it until the last book.

Overall, I really liked this story and can’t wait to read more from this series.

Thank you Annabelle and Meighan for the opportunity to read this book as an ARC.

The Baron’s Open Arms by Annabelle Anders is book two in the Scoundrels with Secrets series and it is brilliant! Lady Beatrice is a true original with a backstory that will pull at your heartstrings. She is on a mission motivated by her own experiences, but she places herself in danger due to her impulsiveness. Gideon, Baron Hawkins, is her brother's best friend and has been in her life since childhood. He notices her reckless behavior one evening at a ball and approaches her brother, the duke. Dash asks Gideon to watch over her and so her becomes her vigilant guard. His behavior immediately causes problems between them as he tries to keep her safe.
I loved Lady Beatrice and feel like she represents so many women who feel that they must take on the world to protect themselves and others without counting the cost. I adored Gideon with his patient, steadfast support who also had come to terms with Beatrice inner strength and determination without destroying her. It is a magical love story of friends who finally realize what is truly between them. The supporting characters are well written and important to the developing story and the underlying mystery that runs through the series. When I finished the book, I had to take a few minutes to think about the feelings it brought to the surface. Anabelle Anders is a must read for me and The Baron's Open Arms proves it once again! Can't wait to read the next in the Scoundrels with Secrets Series!

Lady Beatrice Beckman returned to London a few months after the death of her sister in law and is back in ballrooms to protect the debutantes from the unwanted attention of rogues who don't have their best interest at heart. Her brother's best friend, Gideon Rothmore, Baron Hawkins decides watch over her as she attends ton events without the protection of her brother, the Duke of Dasborough. Dash is spending his time trying to win back the love of his life who he passed over in his rushed marriage to his recently deceased wife, Hannah. After watching Bea intervene in a liaison between a rake and an unwilling debutante, Gideon decides to teach her a few methods of self defense. After Gideon learns Bea's secret, which she hasn't shared with anyone, not even her brother, he understands why she takes it upon herself to protect other women. Also because she hasn't shared her truth with her brother he feels even more protective and determined that she will not come to any harm. While Gideon is searching for clues as to who hurt Bea when she was debuting in society, he recruits other gentleman of the Ton to monitor societal events to ensure the safety of the women thereby relieving Bea of the need to do so. Of course, Bea does not care for the highhandedness of Gideon and they disagree. Though Gideon wants to protect Bea against further harm, they will learn to work together to protect each other and the love that has grown between them.

Dash Beckman is too busy to escort his sister Beatrice around. He asks his best friend, Gideon Rothmore to look out for her.
Beatrice is not happy that Gideon has taken on this favour, and they argue quite a lot. Beatrice had suffered an attack some years earlier, and was desperate to aid other young ladies who succumbed to the charm of so called “Gentlemen”.
They make an agreement that Gideon will assist Beatrice in learning to defend herself. Then she gathers a few friends to learn some self defence also. Gideon requests assistance from his friend, Lord Longstaff, and then leaves everything to him. Gideon is trying very hard to avoid Beatrice as he is falling in love with her. He is also trying to track down information on the man who is trying to prove that he has legitimate right to being the new Lord Lovington, Dudley Groby.
Although this is a stand alone novel, it does help to have read the previous book. To understand the reasons for the way Dash is behaving, to know why Gideon is trying to resolve the problem with Groby.
There is also the mystery still to be solved of Sebastian’s disappearance.
This was another fantastic read by the author. Ms Anders knows how to reel us in on all these wonderful characters, the mysteries that encompass throughout the stories and I can’t wait to see how these all unravel in the future books. Congratulations Annabelle on a fabulous read.

This is a strong read from Anders because of the marvelous interactions between Gideon and Beatrice, our hero and heroine. This story uses the classic “best friend’s sister” trope, but that isn’t the focus of this romance; instead, it’s all about protection. Beatrice has made it her mission to protect young debutantes like she once was from predatory males. When her brother’s best friend Gideon makes it his job to look out for Beatrice, he finds himself helping with her unique mission.

I loved how Gideon and Beatrice had to examine the balance between freedom and protection, between hovering and smothering. Each had a journey to go on as their relationship evolved, and Anders managed that beautifully. I struggled a bit with Beatrice’s goal—after all, she couldn’t go to every society event and protect every woman (and I kept thinking of future years; was she expecting to take part in the Season every year?).

But I loved how organically Gideon and Beatrice’s relationship evolved from a frisson of interest to outright desire. The sensual scenes are beautifully handled and appropriate for what Beatrice endured in her past. I also loved that Anders didn’t overplay the brother’s-best-friend trope because, lordy, that is easy to do.

If you like strong heroines and stalwart heroes, you love Beatrice and Gideon’s journey!

Lady Beatrice Beckman was badly hurt in her first season. She has made it her mission to save other young girls from the same fate. Gideon Rothmore, Baron Hawkins, is best friends with Beatrice’s brother. When he notices that she is putting herself in harm’s way, he decides that he will do whatever is needed to protect her. Will Gideon realize that his feelings for Beatrice are worth more than his duty to her brother?

Wow! This book was a well-written, a truly beautiful, slow-burn love story that was very touching. I absolutely loved it and could not put it down. I loved the chemistry between Beatrice and Gideon, along with all their witty banter. I felt they were truly perfect for each other. I was happy when Gideon finally realized that he could let Beatrice stand on her own and still love her without making her feel like she was being caged. I adored how in the end they both confronted her brother and confessed their love for each other. It was fabulous. Overall, the book was very engaging, very emotional at times, and well worth the read. I highly recommend this book!!

This was a book that was hard to put down. Unlike the quiet, compliant women of the ton, Lady Beatrice wasn't one to take things lying down. She had been ruined by a rake years earlier and she vowed not to let that happen to other young women. She patrolled the Ballroom, keeping her eye out for anyone who !right be trying to read a young woman astray. Most times, she could simply interrupt and send the girl back to her chaperone. But every once in awhile she was forced to use physical methods. When she almost got hurt doing so Lord Gideon stepped in.
Biden was her brother's best friend and while her brother had his mind caught up in his own love problems, Gideon took over watching out for Beatrice. His struggle came from wanting to protect her ad her need to protect herself. The more he was around her the more his feelings grew.
This was a book I had a hard time putting down. When the happily ever after finally came t was worth the wait.

Another winner from this author. I always look forward to her books and this one didn't disappoint me. The story is brother's best friend who falls for the little sister. I am usually all in for this trope so I was immediately drawn into the book. I hadn't read the first book of the series but I don't think that really matters. This story revolves around Bea and Gideon. Bea's brother (Gideon's best friend) is having a crisis of his own and is not appropriately being watchful of his sister (according to Gideon) and Gideon appoints himself to that position. Bea has been attacked in the past at a masquerade ball and is determined to use her unique talents to make sure that never happens to another young lady. You need to read the book to really enjoy all that happens from there. I found myself totally identifying with Bea while understanding Gideon's inability to keep himself from trying to make sure he protects her from anything that could hurt her. A totally satisfying read!!

Gideon is Dash’s loyal best friend . Beatrice is Dash’s ‘spinster’ sister. She is a firecracker and with Dash having his own meltdown over a lady( see book 1 of this series-it is phenomenal!), Gideon is asked to watch out for her. I adored the banter between them and Beatrice’s desire to protect others as she was not. Some of this is very heart wrenching for both main characters and having dealt with her issue as well, I thought it was well represented. Their chemistry was well woven into the story and though left with a ‘tiny’ cliffhanger that seems to be the thread of this series., I enjoyed it immensely. What I didn’t like was the f-bomb. Such a crass bit of language and though only used once, just destroys the scene for me. (Thus the 4 stars) Honestly a good story and enjoyable to read.

I received this story for free and these are my own views.

A collision of duty and desire with a hint of danger.

Beatrice & Gideon
A woman with grinta and a man of poised power.
With little care for her own reputation and a devastating secret, she’s on a mission to save debutantes from nefarious rakes and the shame and disgrace that inevitably follows.
For him, she’s off-limits, his best friend’s little sister. But said friend hasn’t been the best of brothers lately and Bea is determined to find trouble... so what’s a gentleman to do?

At 30 Bea is a force to be reckoned with (and a menace); a duke’s sister, athletic, observant, creative with her decoys and worldly yet strangely oblivious to the consequences of her interventions. Honestly, that last bit puzzled me a little.
And that’s where Gideon steps in. Always at the right place at the right time to save his impulsive imp – a task he assigned to himself, honour bound by years of friendship (you really should read The Duke that I Lost to understand what’s going on with Bea’s brother – excellent book btw!)

Close and self-imposed proximity is the trigger. Quick-witted bicker and banter, hands-on self-defence lessons, sizzling tension and the inability to stay mad, do the rest.
«I’m sorry. I missed you» «I missed you too» SWOOOOON!

G is a man who prides himself on self-control, honour and loyalty, so yes, the realisation he has feelings for his BFF’s sister is a struggle, but I loved this man from the get-go. He’s this delectable quiet force; patient, open-minded, rational, always one step ahead. He listens, senses her pain but doesn’t push, and has absolutely no defence against Bea’s organised chaos. Once he cracks, he’s utterly and completely lost [swoony sigh]
Bea never considered G more than a friend. Until she does. Their differences in temperament converge and clash. Her untameability and his fear for her safety add spunk and conflict to the story. The frenemy dynamic really worked for these two, and the unpredictability made for one heck of an enthralling read!

Beatrice Beckman has no interest in marriage. Armed with sharp wit and sharper aim, she’s determined to protect vulnerable young ladies from the dangers of the ton. Gideon Rothmore, Baron Hawkins, has spent years honouring loyalty above all else. Especially where his best friend's sister is concerned. But when her bold crusade places her directly in danger, Hawk is forced closer than either of them intended.

The second book in the series & whilst it’s easily read on its own, Beatrice is the sister of Dash from the first book – so yes I’d recommend reading in order. I loved both Gideon & Beatrice & thoroughly enjoyed their journey to a HEA, they clashed, their chemistry sizzled & their banter was a delight. I was drawn in from the start & left with a contented sigh at the end

I absolutely loved this book! Beatrice is such a strong female lead, even though she does an excellent job of hiding her vulnerabilities. Gideon is the perfect counterpart, patient, dependable, and unwavering in his support.

I also loved that both characters are surrounded by a loyal group of friends who genuinely care for one another and are always willing to step in and help when needed. Those friendships add so much warmth and depth to the story.

This book has everything I enjoy in a historical romance, laughter, drama, wonderful banter, and a beautifully developing love story that had me invested from beginning to end.

I would recommend reading the first book in the series before picking this one up. The timelines overlap, and doing so gives much better insight into Dash's behavior and the family's dynamics, making this story even more rewarding.

I can't wait for the next installment to see who falls in love next!

As always, Annabelle Anders, has penned a most enjoyable story, with great dialogue and wonderful characters. Beatrice is a force to be reckoned with, strong willed, and bold as can be. Not just any man would know what to do with her. Baron Hawkins (Gideon) is just the man she needs to protect her , mostly from herself, and her dangerous ideas , or so he thinks. He is her brother’s best friend, as they all grew up together. As they spend time together, their relationship grows in admiration and then love, which only makes him more determined to protect her and keep her safe. Unfortunately, his over bearing control was driving her away, and destroying their relationship. They both needed to learn where the other was coming from with trust and understanding of each others fears and needs. A most delightful read.

Though Beatrice Beckman is almost thirty and a spinster, she has a mission. Protect unsuspecting debutantes from being compromised. She roams the balls and fetes she attends keeping her eyes on any unsuspecting young lady being coerced into leaving without a chaperone. Lord Gideon Rothmore, Baron Hawkins, has recently returned to society. It's from his friends he learns of Beatrice's behavior. When he saves her from being overtaken by a thwarted seducer, he offers his help to train her to defend herself without a weapon. As the two work together and expand the lessons, their attraction to each other becomes something more. It will take everything in his arsenal to break down her defenses.
Mild descriptive sex and some violence.

A wonderful romance with slow burn and low spice but they do have hot moments

I really enjoyed this book and LOVE Gideon Rothmore, Baron Hawkins. He is so patient and understanding of Beatrice Beckman even before he learns her secret, including teaching her and her Vigilance Society/friends self-defense for the 1800s. It also has my favorite trope – Brothers Best Friend and I love how it played in their story. 🔥❤️

While this is the second book in Annabelle’s Scoundrels with Secrets series, it standalone. In fact, I read this one first then Book 1: The Duke that I Lost (Beatrice’s brother’s story) and I still enjoyed both of them. So, I’m highly recommending you read both. Looking forward to Book #3 in the series.

I received an ARC of this book, and this is my honest review.

The Barron's Open Arms By Annabelle Anders, is a brother's best friend historical romance. I enjoyed the pairing of Lady Beatrice and Lord Gideon. The running themes of loyalty, trust and strength of character are showcased in different ways throughout the story. I do feel the story was a bit longer than It needed to be. Repetitive references to her brother’s situation, then suddenly all was well in his world. Something about the timing of that didnt work for me. Aside from this minor grievance, I loved our main couples interactions with each other and their friends.

I received a copy from the author, and this is my honest opinion.

I have always liked all books by this author, and this is no exception. In this book Dash’s sister (from previous book) is Beatrice, Dash’s best friend is Hawk. Dash asks Hawk to watch out for his sister. Bea wants to protect other ladies at outings. Which can get her in trouble. The story was written with nice banter between the main characters and I enjoyed it. The only thing I did not enjoy was the little cliff hanger, but I guess it just makes me want to read the next book.

This deeply romantic and inspiring love story features a heroine who embodies courage and wisdom and a hero smart enough to recognize her strength (eventually). In addition to the compelling main characters, the peripheral characters are richly drawn as well – I’ll be watching to see if more of them get their own stories going forward. An exceptional story with characters who will stay with you for a long time. Brava! I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader's Copy of this book; all thoughts and opinions are my own.
